is the timing belt the same for the 2004.5 and the 2005 gli?

View 1 RepliesI replace my timing belt and water pump and my engine is now over heating. I notice it's only over heats when the ac is running and the engine is idling. When I start to drive the engine temp goes down.
View 1 RepliesI have a quick question, when a timing chain breaks on a gli does it cause damage to the engine(like mess up the piston and valves) need to know ASAP.
View 1 RepliesI was wondering if I could take the automatic transmission from a 2004 Jetta 1.8 turbo gas and put it in my 2005 automatic 1.8 turbo gas GLI. Everything about the cars seems the same to me except some of the cosmetics on my GLI.
View 7 RepliesI'm looking to get a GLI, but don't know which year to get. From what i've seen, the 2004.5 models are among the nicest. But what is the difference between each of the years? (2004, 2004.5, 2005), and what do you recommend to purchase?
View 9 RepliesI looked through the MKIV DIY stuff but didn't see one. My serp belt is in need of replacing soon. Seeing some cracking on it for sure. According to records from the PO it was bought as part of the timing belt kit at the end of '09 so I imagine it was changed then...just didn't think it would be so cracked so fast!
Anyway, looking to replace it in the coming weeks. If I could be pointed in the right direction that would be awesome. I do have a Bentley, but I find how-to's on here to often be better. But if I need to just follow the Bentley, I can do that too.
I'm new to the board always been into old school air cooled vws but just bought a 20th anniversary GLI Jetta and need to know how to deactivate the seat belt ding ding. The car did not come with an owners manual so can't look it up.
View 8 RepliesI have a 2005 Toyota Camry with 120K miles that was bought used with 110K. The previous owner did not have the vehicle long and did not know if or when the timing belt had been replaced. I have read several blogs that recommend replacing the timing belt at 60 or 90K. To err on the conservative side I decided just to do it at 120K. Now my problem. Before the timing belt change there was a slight knocking from one of the cylinders. After the belt change the knocking is more pronounced. Q. How concerned should I be that the knocking is more noticeable? Could this be a by-product of the new belt and as it loosens the knocking will subside somewhat? OR, am I looking at valve job or worse?
View 8 RepliesI have a 2005 Toyota camry solara with 66,000. Does the timing belt need to be done now due to age of the car?? Or wait alittle longer?
View 4 RepliesI purchased a 2005 Opel Corsa C 1.8l with around 70k miles. The car is in a fantastic shape, I've had it for around 6 months, having driven around 6k miles. The first maintenance I did was changing all oils and filters, and changing the accesory belt (the one that powers the alternator, that one is not dented). I was told back then at the workshop that the timing belt (not sure if that is the correct name for the belt with dents that syncs valves, etc.) was in a good shape. I don't know if the previous owner/s ever changed it. I understand that the damage done when that belt breaks could get pretty serious, with bent valves, mainly. The question is, should I change the belt now? How long do those last?
View 13 RepliesI have a mk4 gli and I'm having a problem with serpentine belt squealing when I'm at idle and when I turn the ac on. It's isn't all that loud at idle but when I turn on my ac it gets real loud. My ac stopped working a little but after this noise started to happen. Could it be possible that it's the bearing in the compressor that is making it squeal or could it be somthing else?
View 2 RepliesOur pilot is 8 years old but has only 64, 000 miles on it. The dealership is recommending we change motor mounts and timing belt. Although the motor mounts don't seem to be broken and nothing is rattling we have to change the motor mounts due to the fact that the engine is moving more than an inch. Having said that in 6 months we have to put the pilot in long term storage for 3 years. Should we change the timing belt now given the low mileage and the long term storage situation?
View 11 RepliesI have a 2005 Standard 2.5 RS wagon - nice little car.
So with that in mind, I had a local garage (trusted...dealership in this area is notoriously crooked) replace my timing belt, tensioner, idlers, thermostat, and water-pump last week. I've had the car back for about 3 days and I just noticed today, that while the car is idling, I'm hearing a knocking noise coming from the engine somewhere (could be while I'm driving too, but maybe I just not hearing it) - I don't recall this sound before bringing it in for the work. When I rev up the engine a bit, it goes away, but when the car sits for a few minutes, it comes back.
I've already had it back in since the change for a defective tensioner, which the garage replaced free of charge. I plan on calling them first thing Monday morning to bring it in so they can have a look, but in the meantime, what this likely to be?
So my son's car started to sound like a diesel at idle - a good precursor to timing belt tensioner failure and belt slip, as that happened last night.
When we pulled the belt cover off and turned the dampener pulley by hand the belt was spinning on the bottom gear. When turning the engine over, there was no mechanical noises to indicate valves making contact. Did we get lucky or are the valves just bent out of the way?
How can you tell the valves are bent without taking the head off?
My 2006 VW GLI keeps having an intermittent seat belt warning chime even though my seat belt is fastened (and there is no one on the passenger side). It's nearly impossible to reproduce this problem as it will do it at different times of the day and sometimes not for a week. It generally chimes anywhere from 5-10 min despite the seat belt being fastened. I've tried re-buckling and I've tried shaking the buckle and neither worked.
View 2 RepliesOk, so there's a whining sound that is going along with my RPMs, that is coming from the area of my belt, obviously i think its the belt. I am also leaking a little anti freeze. What this could be.
View 5 RepliesAirbag light came on the other day while out on an errand. Take it to work and pull the codes. I got a low voltage code and a driver seat belt buckle code "00059" maybe I'm trying to recall but unsure. I have a pair of seat belt buckles out of a mk5 Jetta. Do these will plug into my mk4 by chance?
View 2 RepliesI was thinking about checking out the above vehicle at my local dealer (Chevrolet). They're asking 15.9k and it has 57k miles. I need to know if it has a timing belt or a timing chain and how reliable is the engine/transmission.
View 1 RepliesI was told by VW service that my timing belt is loose and needs to be changed. Is it possible to know that without taking things apart? The belt was changed at 80k miles. The vehicle is at 132k miles now. Its a 2004 v8. the quote is $1400 which I suppose is in line with what these cost but I'm wondering if I can wait until 160K before changing it.
View 9 RepliesI purchased a 2004 volvo c-70 with 35K miles. The manual says to replace the timing belt at 100k or 10 years. With such low miles do I need to replace it in 2014?
View 6 RepliesI was wondering if the timing belt on my 05 RX 330 needed to be changed due to age and not miles. The car only has 72k miles on it but it is 10 years old.
