I was driving and went to shift from 5th to 6th and when in 6th the engine just revved freely as if it was in neutral. When I tried to get back into 5th it did the same thing. It's also very hard to get into 1st.
I want to try the alignment but I can't find one specifically for the stock 6 speed and I don't have my Bentley DVD on me.
Alright so basically i lost 1 and 2nd gear and i want to replace the transmission since this one already has 150k on it. The hard part is finding a used one because of the six speed! What models can i swap transmissions from? Like i heard i could use a 2003 Audi TT six speed transmission! What I can use to swap out my transmission or do i have to just look for a used one specifically for a 20th?
View 20 RepliesI was driving fine, pulled into 7-11 to get some drinks and came out went in reverse to get outta the parking spot and put it in first and didn't go anywhere....
When i put it in first or second it feels like its in neutral and the car doesn't stall. 3 through 6 gears are fine.....
Getting onto the freeway, not putting the gas to the floor or anything, my throttle completely cut out on me and the EPC and ASR light came on. Turned off the engine, let it sit, and it fired right back up with no lights on.
Replaced the valve cover gasket recently and had a somewhat rough idle since, not sure if the coil over isn't all the way down but will investigate soon.
Was driving the other day and one of the couplers came loos and I lost boost and went into limp mode. I pulled over, got it reattached, and after that it would only hit 10 lbs. i have a KO4-001 with the GIAC file and it usually hits 20+ and holds 20 lbs. I have a regular code reader and I had a code for the EBC, cleared it, rechecked the hoses, and verified with the flash loader that I was on the correct file, but it is still only hitting 10 lbs. What else I should check.
View 1 RepliesEvery time I stop fairly quickly my battery light comes on and I loose all power. Lights, power steering, everything goes... Is this a connection problem? Its not the battery since I have to turn my car off and start it again for it to be alright.. What's going on?
View 14 RepliesIve been having two issues with my GLI lately, last week while driving on the parkway my car just randomly lost acceleration, no lights came on but the gas peddle was unresponsive. I was able to restart it while coasting and thought nothing of it. Then it kept doing it. It was raining that night but ive never had an issue before. Other times it dies it is sunny out. The second issue is sometimes when I hit over 10lbs of boost the car will start to misfire and run like crap. No CEL's come on the dash but if we scan it with VAGCOM it says theres misfires happening, obviously. Already did a smoke test and there are no vacuum leaks.
View 19 RepliesI have 20th gti and I downshifted into third the other day and heard a small grind and all of the sudden I lost all my gears, I couldn't shift into anything and was stuck in third. I was able to move the shifter up and down from 3rd neut to fourth without engaging the clutch but it was all the same gear:S I managed to get home in third considering I was close by and when I stopped i was able to throw it into reverse but it would act like i was in a high gear(either 4th 5th or 6th I am not sure).

The accessory belt moves when I try to start it, but my timing belt stays still, but is kind of tight/very little slack.
It died on the highway, was in gear and it just lost power.
Driving home from work, I was about 5 minutes from home, got to a light only to not be able to go into 1st. I popped it into 2nd and drove home like that pretty much. Car will let me get into reverse and all other gears.
I can put the shifter towards first but it doesn't fully go in and when I gave it gas it would let me start to creep and then grind a little and pop out.

I have a problem with my 20th anniversary gti. My 1st and 2nd gear won't work. Every other gear works fine, the gears never grind before or any unusually noise. I was pulling off my driveway and they just stop working. Even when the car it's on I can move my shifter to 1st and 2nd without the clutch and nothing happens.
View 3 RepliesSo I get in the car to move my car this morning and I can't get the car into 1st gear. It turns out I can't get the car into reverse, 1st gear, or even 3rd gear. It feels like something is blocking me from even approaching those gears, however the others (2,4,5,&6) seem to be fine.

I had it installed and ever since then when I am getting on it going from second to third it grinds a little bit going into third gear. It only does this when i get on it, but when im just cruising its fine. Could the shift linkage just need aligned? Or what else could it be?

View 16 RepliesSo I've been noticing that my GLi is tough to put into first gear sometimes. I feel almost like I have to jam it in place and hold it there, it doesn't just click in. Could this be the shifter cable ends or the cables themselves? Its weird... its only ever been a problem for 1st gear though.
View 15 RepliesI was driving home and noticed that it seemed harder to shove the gear shift into 1st gear. I stopped on the way home and discovered that I couldn't put the car into reverse, when I tried, and then started to drop the clutch and go in reverse, it was as if the car was locked into both reverse and a forward gear, the engine would bog and the car wouldn't budge.
I popped the hood and checked the shift rods and they looked OK, no obstructions or broken parts. I played with the gears for a bit and finally reverse gear suddenly started working again, but now 1st and 2nd gear are gone! it does not feel as if it's engaging the gears at all, the lever moves free. No different than having it in neutral. 3rd gear and above all still work OK, so I had to use 3rd gear to get the car moving.
I had my first and second gear go out on my gti over a month ago, it sat at my house for a little over 2 weeks. When I finally was able to take it to the transmission shop it needed a jump. A week later my transmission was rebuilt and clutch replaced. Car needed a jump when leaving the shop too.
I took it home and a bit later tried to go somewhere and... nothing. Completely dead, won't charge or be jumped. Sunroof was half open and windows cracked. Rained that night so I had a make-shift cover with trash bags and a container top. (I don't know if this matters but just in case it may be water related.)
The next day I got a new battery and changed it. Car worked fine for 2 days. This morning I tried to start it and it fluttered and battery completely shut off. Jumped it and tried to take it around the block after few and it shut off mid drive, but was able to restart while rolling. Then when I pulled over and hit the four ways it immediately shut everything off again. I had someone come with cables so I could just get it home, and as soon as I connected the red cable to + it sparked and the lights and everything turned on, started right up. (the jumper cables were not connected to anything on the other side)
Finally I got it back home and when I pulled into the driveway and stopped I hit the window buttons and boom, everything off again.
Confusing story, but what could be wrong? I included everything just in case. (I have 2 keys, one which keyless entry works and one which it doesn't as of recent. I have used both. Don't know if immobilizer could be it either.)
One day i was driving my pedal went flat to the floor ,then i noticed my brake fluid was low so then i tried adding more fluid and bleeding it n pumping the clutch i got pressure back, but now i hear chatter in the tranny and it wasn't doing that till after I bleed it. It will go into gear with the car off but as soon as the car starts in wont at all.
View 12 RepliesToday I went to start my car and let it warm up and everything worked fine and it started regularly but when I went to go drive the car and put the clutch in the pedal didn't return and I could not put it into gear, need to identify the problem.
View 4 RepliesYesterday I went to shift from 2nd to 3rd real easy going like 25mph and i couldn't shift out of second. I could wiggle the shifter up and down but barely side to side. Even when moving it up and down it didn't feel like it was engaged in any gear although it was apparent I was stuck in second. Clutch feels normal and still grabs well.
So after driving only in second all the way to my uncles shop I sit at school waiting to see where i can pour more money into the GTI. Its a 20th ae totally stock tranny, I don't know a whole lot about transmissions but possibly the linkage got messed up? I didnt hit any big bumps or anything before it happened.
So far its only happened twice in the past to days, and its only happened in 1st gear. when i give it gas to go in 1st gear the EPC light will come on and it sounds like a miss fire or something. then the car basically shuts down.
