Ok, I'm finally ready to dump out this stock tranny fluid and put in something else to alleviate the 3rd gear grind. Question is, which one should I put in?
View 18 RepliesI drive a 2005 Jetta GLI 1.8T 6 speed O2M transmission.
I was redlining 1st 2nd and it wouldn't go into 3rd tried 2-3 times finally did. but I believe it went into first instead! I think I was driving like 50-60 mpg I don't know. Anyways it JERKED BADLY. I think right after it started making a noise. sounds like the manifold or downpipe gasket. I know the flex part of my cheap downpipe started like tearing and ripping, so I thought that just broke thru. maybe I don't know. I drove the car home. tranny worked flawlessly. every gear very smooth like always. (redline tranny fluid). at home I jacked it up took the bumper off. and listened where the sounds were coming from. not power steering. it sounds like a hose is loose. but I checked nothing. I put my ear next to the tranny. sounds like it coming from there. nothing changes when I depress the clutch. when I start driving the sound goes away I think. can't hear the cause of aftermarket exhaust. and stage 2 chip tunning APR 93.
After all, that believing it the downpipe. I put everything back on and drove it about 10 miles and this other sound came in. happened in 2nd after like 4-5krpm. maybe it was there from the beginning. I drove it slowly under 3k. but this sound is like rattling and kinda vibrates the clutch a little. it happens after I accelerate and take my foot off the gas pedal. kinda when slowing down. I drove parked the car 2 hours later drove it home and 2-5th gear was making this rattling sound now.
I don't know what to do. I need to drive a car. should I drive it or not? do I need a new tranny/ is it fixable? should I park the car and take the tranny off/
how tightly are the flywheel bolts suppose to be tightened? something loose?
I did an auto to 6-speed swap.
I have 20th gti and I downshifted into third the other day and heard a small grind and all of the sudden I lost all my gears, I couldn't shift into anything and was stuck in third. I was able to move the shifter up and down from 3rd neut to fourth without engaging the clutch but it was all the same gear:S I managed to get home in third considering I was close by and when I stopped i was able to throw it into reverse but it would act like i was in a high gear(either 4th 5th or 6th I am not sure).
View 4 RepliesI am having trouble shifting my 6 speed into 2nd, 4th, and 6th. I got my clutch replaced about a year ago, not sure if that makes a difference. Any fixes short of bringing it to a shop?
View 1 RepliesI have an 04 Gli with 85000 miles on it. I just had the clutch done with a conversion from a dual mass to a single. When the car is idling there is some chatter coming from the tranny but it stops once i press the clutch.
View 3 RepliesI'm having some issues with my brake fluid going low every 2-3 weeks. I get the 3 beeps on the brake light and the flashing. Sometimes it's constant and flashes 15+ times. Sometimes it comes and goes throughout the day or even the week. After I fill up my fluid, it's fine. Usually, have to fill up a pretty good amount though. Almost a whole small bottle sometimes.
Obviously I'm having a leak but I'm not sure where. I'm a noob when it comes to brakes. My brakes work fine, clutch feels fine, etc.. I read around and was told it could be the clutch slave cylinder leaking, but is this common on the O2M? I looked at the lines around the master cylinder and nothing seems to be leaking. Also, I'm not noticing any brake fluid on my shoes or in the cabin. Any tips on what to check, what's common? Are the leaks most likely going to be in the engine bay?
I have a peculiar problem. When auto crossing and driving the car hard, the lug bolts on only the front driver's side wheel have a tendency to loosen. I torque the bolts to 100 ft-lbs with a torque wrench, so I am confident they are tight before I start driving. The retaining screw holding the rotor in place loosens as well. The wheel has fallen off once already while driving.
I do notice in the transition from accelerating to decelerating (only sometimes) that there is a stuttering from the front driver's side (sounds a little like an out of balance wheel). When it happens, it's often at 55MPH in 5th and at lower speeds in lower gears. The car was leaking a little trans fluid too (.5qt), but I can't tell from where. It has since stopped.
Cars have been having problems with the clutch sticking to the floor. Bled the brake valve. Seemed to fix the problem, took a 30 min drive following, and clutch to the floor 2x at the end of the drive. Then, my car started to sound like a freaking wrx! BARELY made it home and it will turn over but quickly spud out. checked codes and it missed fire in 3 cylinders and small puddle under the car. I'm stuck and out of ideas other than coils.
View 3 RepliesDriving home from work, I was about 5 minutes from home, got to a light only to not be able to go into 1st. I popped it into 2nd and drove home like that pretty much. Car will let me get into reverse and all other gears.
I can put the shifter towards first but it doesn't fully go in and when I gave it gas it would let me start to creep and then grind a little and pop out.

I have a problem with my 20th anniversary gti. My 1st and 2nd gear won't work. Every other gear works fine, the gears never grind before or any unusually noise. I was pulling off my driveway and they just stop working. Even when the car it's on I can move my shifter to 1st and 2nd without the clutch and nothing happens.
View 3 RepliesSo I get in the car to move my car this morning and I can't get the car into 1st gear. It turns out I can't get the car into reverse, 1st gear, or even 3rd gear. It feels like something is blocking me from even approaching those gears, however the others (2,4,5,&6) seem to be fine.

I had it installed and ever since then when I am getting on it going from second to third it grinds a little bit going into third gear. It only does this when i get on it, but when im just cruising its fine. Could the shift linkage just need aligned? Or what else could it be?

View 16 RepliesSo I've been noticing that my GLi is tough to put into first gear sometimes. I feel almost like I have to jam it in place and hold it there, it doesn't just click in. Could this be the shifter cable ends or the cables themselves? Its weird... its only ever been a problem for 1st gear though.
View 15 RepliesI was driving home and noticed that it seemed harder to shove the gear shift into 1st gear. I stopped on the way home and discovered that I couldn't put the car into reverse, when I tried, and then started to drop the clutch and go in reverse, it was as if the car was locked into both reverse and a forward gear, the engine would bog and the car wouldn't budge.
I popped the hood and checked the shift rods and they looked OK, no obstructions or broken parts. I played with the gears for a bit and finally reverse gear suddenly started working again, but now 1st and 2nd gear are gone! it does not feel as if it's engaging the gears at all, the lever moves free. No different than having it in neutral. 3rd gear and above all still work OK, so I had to use 3rd gear to get the car moving.
I had my first and second gear go out on my gti over a month ago, it sat at my house for a little over 2 weeks. When I finally was able to take it to the transmission shop it needed a jump. A week later my transmission was rebuilt and clutch replaced. Car needed a jump when leaving the shop too.
I took it home and a bit later tried to go somewhere and... nothing. Completely dead, won't charge or be jumped. Sunroof was half open and windows cracked. Rained that night so I had a make-shift cover with trash bags and a container top. (I don't know if this matters but just in case it may be water related.)
The next day I got a new battery and changed it. Car worked fine for 2 days. This morning I tried to start it and it fluttered and battery completely shut off. Jumped it and tried to take it around the block after few and it shut off mid drive, but was able to restart while rolling. Then when I pulled over and hit the four ways it immediately shut everything off again. I had someone come with cables so I could just get it home, and as soon as I connected the red cable to + it sparked and the lights and everything turned on, started right up. (the jumper cables were not connected to anything on the other side)
Finally I got it back home and when I pulled into the driveway and stopped I hit the window buttons and boom, everything off again.
Confusing story, but what could be wrong? I included everything just in case. (I have 2 keys, one which keyless entry works and one which it doesn't as of recent. I have used both. Don't know if immobilizer could be it either.)
I was driving and went to shift from 5th to 6th and when in 6th the engine just revved freely as if it was in neutral. When I tried to get back into 5th it did the same thing. It's also very hard to get into 1st.
I want to try the alignment but I can't find one specifically for the stock 6 speed and I don't have my Bentley DVD on me.
One day i was driving my pedal went flat to the floor ,then i noticed my brake fluid was low so then i tried adding more fluid and bleeding it n pumping the clutch i got pressure back, but now i hear chatter in the tranny and it wasn't doing that till after I bleed it. It will go into gear with the car off but as soon as the car starts in wont at all.
View 12 RepliesToday I went to start my car and let it warm up and everything worked fine and it started regularly but when I went to go drive the car and put the clutch in the pedal didn't return and I could not put it into gear, need to identify the problem.
View 4 RepliesYesterday I went to shift from 2nd to 3rd real easy going like 25mph and i couldn't shift out of second. I could wiggle the shifter up and down but barely side to side. Even when moving it up and down it didn't feel like it was engaged in any gear although it was apparent I was stuck in second. Clutch feels normal and still grabs well.
So after driving only in second all the way to my uncles shop I sit at school waiting to see where i can pour more money into the GTI. Its a 20th ae totally stock tranny, I don't know a whole lot about transmissions but possibly the linkage got messed up? I didnt hit any big bumps or anything before it happened.
So far its only happened twice in the past to days, and its only happened in 1st gear. when i give it gas to go in 1st gear the EPC light will come on and it sounds like a miss fire or something. then the car basically shuts down.
