On my gti when in low revs, theres a rattle that sounds like a shield but I've check the one around that cat and the one under the turbo. but it still rattles. What this could be?
View 3 RepliesRecently I have gotten a very loud and annoying rattle coming from my heat shield I think. I jacked the car up and tried to locate where the issue was but that wasn't successful. Do I need the heat shield by the muffler? And do you think it could be my cat rattling?
View 14 RepliesI have a 2010 F150 FX4 with the 5.4L, and lately under slow movement (less that 20km/h it is sounding like there is a rattle. I can try to get a video of the sound later, now I'm wondering if the universal bearings in the driveshaft would be making this noise or if it could be the 4wd actuators failing? Would either of these make a loud rattle? (Sounds like a heat shield shaking but all are tight). Had a Ranger up until last year so just learning the ins and outs of F150 life.
View 5 RepliesI've noticed that potentially my heat shield or whatever guard that is 1 step toward the front of the car from where the inlet pipe connects to the exhaust system may be the reason for my rattle at 2k and 3k rpms. i think its a heat shield but I am not sure. the thing is it seems properly mounted, nothing is cracked/broken/or loose. But when I do try and wiggle it it does make a slight creaking noise that sounds similar to the rattle I get. So I could foresee this as being my issue.
But, is there anyway to fix this rattle w/out just taking off the part? i figure its there for a reason and it looks like its held on in 2 places. But they're not nuts they almost look like spot welds or something. 1 on each side. What to do?
Something to get you all in here:
I have a 42 DD tb exhaust. And so far I've used a 3" exhaust clamp over the last hanger (after the muffler) which raised the exhaust all the way up against the heatshield, eliminating the rattle over the rear axle beam. But the exhaust was rattling against the heatshield.
So I bought 15 ft of exhaust wrap and wrapped the section that comes in contact with the heatshield. It worked a bit but it still rattles a little! I hate this rattling! How to get rid of the rattling? Should I just use more exhaust wrap?
I recently purchased this truck and have towed a couple of times with it. It has 98,000 miles and I do not know if the automatic transmission fluid has been changed. Should I have it flushed or drop the pan and change it? I have a lift so doing the change is no problem, although it might be worth it to pay a transmission shop to do it.
Also, I hear what appears to be like a heat shield rattle or something that sounds kinda like an exhaust leak during loaded acceleration. What to look for to locate the noise? One last question, the air bag light is on sometimes then off sometimes. Any known air bag light issues? I love the truck, hate the gas mileage!
So I get in my car, start it up. as i drive away i notice a whining noise, as the revs get higher the noise gets louder. so i push the clutch in and rev it. Got that same whining noise, gets louder as the rev goes higher etc... so i turn the car off come back a little while later and its still making that noise. It doesn't really sound like a belt noise,
It was the power steering fluid, thought it was low. I haven't checked that yet...
So, I just installed a ESE cold air intake on my gli...and when i shift it sounds like air is coming out of the intake. make sense? is this normal? Also, how high is the risk of a hydrolock?
View 15 RepliesFirst off i couldn't get the car into reverse to back out of a convenience store and then i let off the clutch to try and pump it again and the car just dies. drove just fine up until i parked. Now when i try to move through gears it sounds like it's shifting but the car doesn't move. The car does have a stronger clutch and unitronic chip if that would have to do with anything.

Every time i accelerate, turn it on or rev it up it sounds like a turbo diesel truck! I have no clue what it could be..
Sounds like maybe from exhaust, I could be wrong but what that is? Just started today...
View 10 RepliesI just installed a brand new 42DD downpipe in my car about two weeks back. About a week later, I started noticing a rattle that I hadn't heard before, coming from the undercarriage, about mid way back, where I assumed the downpipe is. I only hear the rattle at low RPMs, like 1000-1500 revs, when I pull away from a light. I can stop the rattle by giving it more gas before letting the clutch all the way out, but if it's something I can easily fix myself, I'd rather just do it.
I searched some DIYs and found this. [URL]..................................... I bought new sets of stage 1 dogbone mounts that I need to put in soon, probably next week when I'm on break, if that will remedy it.
Did some searching on this and some said it could be the throw out bearing, some sort of intake rod or something like that, or possibly a heat shield..
Figured I'd ask to see if there has been more of a solution as the threads seemed pretty old.
When I accelerate or rev, the car has a rattling sound coming from the passenger side. If i take the car out of gear and slow down or let it idle, the noise disappears completely.
The center of my steering wheel rattles (part that you press for your horn) is there any way to tighten this?
View 4 RepliesI've got an AE edition GTI which has developed a very annoying rattle coming from the button on the hand brake. I'm trying to disassemble it to get to the chrome covered button which is rattling, but can't seem to get the leather wrapped plastic cover off. I've already pulled the center console out and have tried squeezing, pulling, etc every which way (on the leather wrapped cover).
View 12 RepliesThe front of the hood on the right towards the headlight is rattling pretty bad, but stops whenever I place pressure on the hood on the right side. The hoods shut all the way so I'm not sure whatsup. Not a big deal just pretty annoying.

I'm not sure if it was from the wheel well area or under the steering wheel in the dash. I only noticed it when I was at lower RPMs in second gear. (And its not the typical MKIV rattle sounds)...

View 15 RepliesThe catalytic converter shield is tack welded on the front end but free on the rear end. There was originally some braided wire packing at the rear to keep the shield from rattling against the pipes. Mine was deteriorated and had been damaged, I think, when I sustained some oil pan damage last summer -- big jolt to the system when running over a muffler on the highway.
The fix is simple. Bought a foot of 3/16" braided stainless steel cable. I used about 8 inches and layed in the lower bead line on the catalytic converter shield (see picture below). You can see a bit of the cable thru the gap in the upper/lower shield on the left side. (1/4" cable would be a better fit, but this will work for a long time.) Cost: $1.84
The local VW parts man dug out an exploded drawing of the system but it showed NO parts or packing for this problem.
I am very mechanically inclined and up until now I can usually hear a noise and know exactly what the problem is, given enough time to listen..
The best I can describe the noise I am hearing, sounds like a cross between heat shield rattle or a syncro somehow stretched out and is loosely spinning around once in gear.. Hard to explain, but all gears shift perfectly..clutch was replaced at 102K and I am currently at 130K. Also I might be crazy but it sounds like I am starting to hear the noise in 3rd as well. I would post a sound clip, but its so faint it doesn't show up on my iphone..
The reason I am throwing it out there, is because half of the seriously trusted mechanics I know say it sounds like a bearing in the tranny going out, the other half, (3 of 6) can't even hear what I am talking about but its there.
Hearing a loose heat shield like rattle when hitting bumps...checked everything underneath , can't find anything loose..? 09 GX-470 56K miles
