I took my car to a shop today to have some engine stuff checked out. One of the mechanics noticed the vacuum levels would drop to 28-30 hg when changing gears or going into neutral. Is this normal?

Two days ago, i'm picking up a friend at their house and as i go to take off from a complete stop- 1st gear revs up as if the car were in neutral, same thing with 2nd gear. 3rd-6th work normally and so does reverse. I called the dealership and they guy says that since the car was bought 'As Is' he can do nothing for me, but try and get me his price on the repair (which i think is complete BS).
I've had a couple people try and tell me a few things that could be causing the problem, like throw out bearing, or maybe the shift fork. i would say that i know a little bit about cars, but i've mainly worked on honda's or other japanese cars so i feel a little lost under the hood of a vw still.
i have a 04 gli torando red i spike at 12psi and hold at 10psi. the last three days im only getting 5 psi i fixed some vacuum leaks and it went back to 10psi then today back to 5psi dont know if its chipped it does have fmic and air intake and bov...
View 8 Repliesso i've had my 337 for a couple months now and when i first got it i found 2 broken vacuum hoses that were causing misfires. once i got those replaced my CEL went off and seemed to be running fine other than from time to time when i started it up my idle would be around 1.2k rpms and then after a couple miles itd settle down to 750-800 rpms but it wasn't rock solid, so obviously there is still something wrong.
on my drive home tonight from work i was in the mood for some spirited driving but when i'd hit the gas i could feel some hesitation through the powerband at wide open throttle. when i got home i turned it off, and started it back up to see if it was idling funny and when it ignited the rpms jumped to almost 2k and immediately fell back down to 1.2k.
My thoughts are its either a vacuum leak again, bad/dirty maf, dirty throttle body, or a boost leak.
This is my other question. I have an APR program and turbo-back billy boat exhaust. I installed a boost gauge that gets the reading off of the intake manifold (fuel regulator.)
So if I'm just tooling along, short-shifting and only using 1/10 throttle, and my boost gauge never reads above -5, let alone 0 or positive, why does my valve release pressure?
Why would there be pressure to release if there is a vacuum, according to the gauge? I wouldn't think that a recirculating or blow-off valve would work in reverse.
The shift lever goes into the gates fine, if a bit easier. No weird noises. 1st and 2nd gear don't work - they act like neutral.
3rd-6th and reverse work fine. Clutch hadn't been slipping. It's the original clutch.
Local mechanic found no issues between the shift lever and the transmission itself. 3 weeks ago replaced timing belt and water pump and the car has been running well.
Yesterday I was driving home from work in light stop-and-go traffic. At one point I put the car in first and it acted like it was in neutral. Engine revved but there was no engagement of the drivetrain. 2nd gear was the same story. After experimenting, 3rd-6th and reverse worked and I was able to get the car limping off to a parking lot by starting in 3rd.
I got it towed to a local mechanic who services my car who said he doesn't crack open transmissions but would look to see if there was something obvious wrong between the transmission and the shift lever. He didn't find anything.
So ive had the car for a couple months now, daily driver. Fixed a couple minor things here and there. I bought a K&N drop in filter the other day took it for a spin and when i was shifting from 1st to 2nd my second gear seemed empty. nothing. didnt grind or feel rough at all. just didnt have a gear. then i tried 1st and same result. before this my car was running great clutch felt strong and i was having alot of fun with my car. I even tried resetting my linkage and checked the cables inside and by the tranny.
1st and 2nd are gone
I got a 337 and not sure if the trans is going or not. it shifts all gears but the first 3 are sketchy and sometimes they're hard to get into gear. it feels like I am hitting something in the way when i shift but other times its smooth like butter. I do have some shaft play. never pops out of gear either. could it be the linkage? the shift fork? slave cylinder?
View 5 RepliesI was driving my car to a local GTG the other night and about 3/4 the way there i went to go put it first and it wouldn't go into any gear .... I summed it up to being either the tranny the clutch or the linkage....
My only clue is that i can rotate the shift knob in a circular motion.... the clutch petal still feels normal ... and under the hood when you try to move the linkage manually into gear the side to side part hits the motor mount (metal to metal)....
I was driving fine, pulled into 7-11 to get some drinks and came out went in reverse to get outta the parking spot and put it in first and didn't go anywhere....
When i put it in first or second it feels like its in neutral and the car doesn't stall. 3 through 6 gears are fine.....
So I recently swapped out my cabin air filter, no other major changes or issues... but ever since I noticed that when I'm in neutral or at a stop, I can start to smell the faint odor of exhaust fumes. No CELs and it's not coming from the gas tank area like I know some have experienced - only from the vents. It's noticeable to me, but nothing unbearable by any means. I definitely never had this before - and my old filter was really dirty so not sure why a new one would give me any issues of have anything but BETTER air quality. I notice that I can curb the smell by pushing the circulate air button, effectively shutting off any outside air from coming in.
View 4 RepliesI was driving down the street and i noticed i couldnt get it in first gear, almost like a wall blocking it. and then i put it into 2nd gear and i started rolling... i turned my car off and when i started it back up, it had a slight grinding noise (in neutral). i put it in first gear, took out the clutch and i wasnt going anywhere... same with 2nd gear...
so i towed my car to the shop, they said my clutch went out and i "lost first and REVERSE gear".... is that possible?!
Well, like the title says, The trans is stuck in third gear, with no other gears, or neutral or reverse. The car is slightly modified 02 GTI 337. APR Chip, Forge TIP, Full 3" exhaust, Greddy FMIC. I definitely drive the car, and had been beating up on it on the highway for a little on my way in to work, then on the way home, down shifted to pass someone, dropped it third, passed them, went to shift to fourth, Shifter moved, felt like it engaged "a gear" and then then i let off the clutch and it was still in third.
I also noticed that unless, I press the clutch in the, the car stays in this gear, even when the shifter is in neutral. I looked at the linkage, and it appears to be functioning. I did some reading around the Vortex and it seems like this might be a shift fork problem. Also, if the trans will be apart, what items should be upgraded?
For some reason My car won't boost like it used to in the upper gears. 1st, 2nd and even 3rd I can still boost around 18 but once I go 4th, 5th, 6th my boost get lower and lower to the point the I get only 10psi in 6th gear. The car also seems slower a doesn't spool that fast like it used. i checked most of the hoses, even my intercooler pipes which were leaking before and everything is tight. Could it be my DV which is still stock or should I look someplace else?
View 13 Replieswas diriving my toy1and was shifting from 3rd to 4th when the rpm reved up and the car would not take any gears to drive foword or revers my gears when you shift are engagging but no mvement also i dont have to push the clutch in to shift it will go with out clutching.
View 9 RepliesI just changed both of the o2 sensors on my 337 like i was told and my car ran for about 80 miles until the engine light went back on again I brought it back in to get it scanned again and i got a P1174 code. What it is and some solutions.
View 7 RepliesFirst off i couldn't get the car into reverse to back out of a convenience store and then i let off the clutch to try and pump it again and the car just dies. drove just fine up until i parked. Now when i try to move through gears it sounds like it's shifting but the car doesn't move. The car does have a stronger clutch and unitronic chip if that would have to do with anything.
View 13 RepliesI am hearing a rumbling noise when I hit 4000 rpms on all gears worst in 2nd and 3rd.... I just recently replaced the timing belt, TBA Done, valve cover gasket, and passenger side axle (through raxles). Anyways I started hearing noise after those repairs, my mechanic has gone through all the work recently done and cant find the problem..... We replaced the tranny mount thinking it was that, but no luck.... I have not lost boost, and noise starts 4000k and goes away at 4700k No codes are flashing.
View 5 Repliessometimes when i switch from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd i get a loud popping noise like my exhaust is hitting the under side of the center column. I have had the car on a lift and shook the hell out of the exhaust...it's not moving enough to cause that loud popping...so i figured it could possibly be the dogbone mount gone and the downpipe is hitting when i shift because the mount is bad?
Or could it be one of the other mounts...I'm going through a divorce right now and really really broke so i need to make sure i get the right one and fix it right the first time. What mount it is if not positive its the dogbone?
I have 20th gti and I downshifted into third the other day and heard a small grind and all of the sudden I lost all my gears, I couldn't shift into anything and was stuck in third. I was able to move the shifter up and down from 3rd neut to fourth without engaging the clutch but it was all the same gear:S I managed to get home in third considering I was close by and when I stopped i was able to throw it into reverse but it would act like i was in a high gear(either 4th 5th or 6th I am not sure).
View 4 RepliesI own a 1996 Corolla DX with an auto transmission which has a few issues I would like to fix. The biggest issue is that sometimes it stays stuck at high RPMs (somewhere near 3,100) without changing gears which makes me have to give it some extra torque momentarily to change gear and drive at normal RPMs. But sometimes it does the opposite, when slowing down it sometimes stays at a higher gear and won't change to a lower gear until I've slowed down almost to a stop.
Another issue is that it is very slow to accelerate, it just feels real heavy and I regularly have to give it a lot of torque just to be at equal speed with the rest of the cars on the road, does this have a fix? Other than that there isn't any major issue that I actually know about, for this reason I'd like to know what place you would recommend me taking my car to get a full checkup to find any issues I don't know about.
