I have the po411 code, not sure which problem it is but when I first start the car it sounds awful like almost a grinding or rattling noise then stops after a few seconds.
View 3 RepliesSo today as I was pulling my handbrake after parking the car, apparently it snapped, so np, taking it tomorrow to the garage for a fix. Anyways had an urgent outing, started the car and went for a 10 mins drive. I didn't give it enough time to warm up. So finished what i had to do, got back in the car, tried to start it, nothing. Took me two tries and 20 seconds of cranking before the car would start. started with EPC light on, drove it nothing wrong in it, except the check EPC light is on. What it might be?
View 3 RepliesI just picked up a 20th and it seems when it's running and parked i get this very distinct rattling noise from somewhere in my engine bay. I go to put the clutch down and it stops, as soon as i lay off the clutch it comes back (almost humming) could it maybe be the trans?
View 8 RepliesSo I really don't drive my car much during the year since I'm away at college. Once I got back home a couple weeks ago and drove my 20th, i heard a rattle coming from the middle of the car. Jacked it up and starting banging around. The sound is coming from my resonator. Its either the clamp that is busted or the resonator itself. I have to get in closer to see which it is. But I do have a few questions. If I just cut the resonator cut off and weld a straight pipe to that will it be much louder. I have a stock 20th and I'm not really looking for a loud exhaust at the moment. Is it much louder without the resonator? I know if you put a straight pipe in place of the muffler it is MUCH louder so I'm just curious.
View 1 RepliesI recently installed my 3" GHL exhaust along with my stage 1 BFI dogbone and I recently noticed a very faint rattle when I am engine braking. I can only hear it when there's no cars around or when its quite. but i cant figure it out. (I still have the stock exhaust heat shield in from the cat back so I am not ruling that out as a possibility).

The only thing I can think is to replace the spring in it, but Idon't know how difficult that would be. Otherwise my only other thoughts are to find something thing enough that I can slide into it and hope it doesn't ever jam it up.
View 3 RepliesNormally I'm pretty good about searching and finding info, but there doesn't seem to be a lot out there for these trannys. In any case, when I hopped in my 20th to move it today, I got this grinding noise when letting out the clutch. The car won't go move in reverse or any of the forward gears. Idles fine, sounds fine when in neutral or when the clutch is depressed. It just grinds when you let the clutch out. Seems like I can select each gear OK. Linkage feels normal.
View 2 RepliesI was driving down the street and i noticed i couldnt get it in first gear, almost like a wall blocking it. and then i put it into 2nd gear and i started rolling... i turned my car off and when i started it back up, it had a slight grinding noise (in neutral). i put it in first gear, took out the clutch and i wasnt going anywhere... same with 2nd gear...
so i towed my car to the shop, they said my clutch went out and i "lost first and REVERSE gear".... is that possible?!
Just recently bought a 04 gli. When I shift in to 3rd and let off the gas there is a weird grinding rubbing like noise. It only makes the noise when it's in 3rd gear...
View 3 Replies2004 Jetta GLI V6 24v 6 speed ... This started a few years ago, but it was happening in 3rd gear only -- therefore I avoided engine braking in 3rd gear all along. The noise was a pretty loud, noticeable grinding/spinning noise. 3rd gear while accelerating or maintaining gas worked and still works perfectly, smooth as can be.
Somewhat recently (6mo-1yr ago) all the other 5 gears started making this grinding noise, some more than others. 1st gear I don't really know because I don't engine brake in 1st. However, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th (barely noticeable but still there) all make the noise. I now of course avoid all engine braking, however even the transitional steps between gears can be heard sometimes ... unless I perfectly match the RPM etc, but I'm just trying to get to work and back here ...
The car is still quite drivable, but with a major obstacle (pain in the ass) and a new clutch is probably around the corner -- I have 107K on it now. However ... a few years ago when it had 26K on it .. it didn't need a new clutch yet 3rd was still making that noise.
I've just started noticing a "clicking/ grinding/ creaking" when I turn my wheel. It makes the noise if I'm parked, or driving slowly. I can feel it in the steering wheel, and hear it in the cabin, but can't hear anything when I'm under the car.
It sounds like 'two pieces of rubber binding on each other', is the best I can describe it. I THINK its coming from the driver's side. I've considered: strut mounts shifting, CV joints, something in the steering column, Tie rods, power steering pump...
Everything is tight on the wheel when I try to move it by hand (on jacks), and no rips/ tears in any boots.
So I put in new rotors and pads and everytime the car is backing up I get a weird grinding or squealing noise. I've driven the cars for hundreds of miles and this still happens. This only happens when going backwards. Anything to try???
View 4 RepliesSo I picked up a 20th today. The clutch has 30k on it its an oem luk. Drove fine most of the ride home then i went to shift and it wouldn't grab. Got it towed home. trans goes into all gears fine. When you put it in first and try to go it starts to roll but just makes a grinding type noise and doesnt go into gear. I didn't hear any chatter until maybe 10 miles before this happened. I still have pressure in the clutch pedal as well. when the car is in neutral running there isnt any noise which makes me think it isnt the throw out bearing.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2004 VW jetta GLI 1.8 turbo and when i get it to about three and a half grand it feels like my turbo is giving out, all acceleration stops. But I doesn't do it all the time, meaning not every time i step on the gas, like I can step on it all through first and second, and it will do it in third or visa-versa. Which leads me to believe that it could be a fuel delivery problem but I don't know, im new to the VW game. The check engine light will come on while the car is bogging down but as soon as the rpms go down it will turn off.

View 1 RepliesOkay, this all started a couple weeks ago when i first heard a weird knocking noise about 10 minutes after I left my house. I pulled the car over and it seemed to be coming from the right rear of the car. I started to turn around when it stopped. Over the next few days I notice the longer I let it warm up the sooner I hear the noise. I park in the garage and have read different things on the temp changing etc. About a week ago my check gas cap light went on shortly after I heard the knocking noise.
I pulled over to check if it was tightened and when i restarted it the light was off.... I didn't think much about it but this weekend it went on again, after I heard the noise and I pulled over to check it, tightened it and started. This time it did not go off. After letting the car sit for a bit and restarting it finally went away. Then again this morning 7/2 after hearing the noise the gas cap light goes off again...same thing as the last. Light will not go off... the car is parked right now and hopefully the light is off when I go back to turn it on.
Received error code P0445 now and gas cap light no longer on, check engine light now comes on. I had my bf locate the fuel pump and he ran it and the noise seems to come from there...(TY Savko@HSTuning). When he moved it the check engine light went off for about 15 minutes but eventually came back on. I read to replace gas cap first with a P0445 error so I ordered a new Gas Cap and if that doesn't work I guess the fuel pump will be next?
Quick q recently just got a gli and I've noticed a knocking sound when accelerating and shifting from stops could this be my motor mounts ? I was thinking my tranny or clutch but everything runs smooth and goes into gear fine
View 5 RepliesI just put on a magnaflow cat-back exhaust and sometimes when i idle i have a rattle and sometimes it will not rattle. I went under it and shook all around to see if anything was hitting but there was nothing i could see. What could it be?

View 1 RepliesHad it done at 87K years ago. Coolant light came on car had been rattling. Parked and coolant came leaking out. At 157K now was gonna replace belt at 167k, that's 80k since the last job. My guy says had I drove it further would be looking at a new 1.8t.
Does this sound about right to you since it's been 70k since that last timing water pump job. Why didn't the car overheat? Chipped at 40k with apr and very conservative driver. I suppose it just depends on too many variables why the job needs to be done 10k before I originally planned to do it.
I have an 04 Gli with 85000 miles on it. I just had the clutch done with a conversion from a dual mass to a single. When the car is idling there is some chatter coming from the tranny but it stops once i press the clutch.
