My friends car just messed up. at a stop sign he heard clanking. then he put it in first to accelerate and the car wouldn't move just rev the rpms like if your on neutral but he can hear clanking around the gearbox or so. what can it be? i told him it cant be his entire tranny or his clutch that something must have came lose. what could it be?
View 17 RepliesSometimes while driving if i accelerate the car fully the rpms will accelerate way to fast (at least 2x faster than usual) without picking up much speed at all. I can tell that the car is not going to full boost. The problem is the worst in 5th and 6th gear (when the car is relying more on boost im guessing?) and will happen one day and be perfectly fine the next. I just had the car checked for a boost leak about 3 weeks ago so i dont think its that. The car is chipped with uni stage 1+ (20psi) and has a full 3 inch turboback.
View 15 RepliesSo I noticed a few months ago that a clanking noise came from the front of my GLI when I hit bumps. This noise went away if I had my foot on the brake, so enough vortex searches came up with loose caliper carrier pins.
I ordered the brake stiffening kit last month, but have yet to install it. Now just the other day, I heard this crazy noise come from my brakes entering my garage. It was like a loud 'click" when I engaged the brakes hard enough and I could repeat it many times. I know, I am silly for not getting the kit installed sooner, but I want to make sure that this 'click' is likely related to the carrier pins before I go taking the brakes apart in my garage.
I only ask because my car has 95k on it and is possibly on original suspension, so bushings and mounts might be starting to go.
First off i couldn't get the car into reverse to back out of a convenience store and then i let off the clutch to try and pump it again and the car just dies. drove just fine up until i parked. Now when i try to move through gears it sounds like it's shifting but the car doesn't move. The car does have a stronger clutch and unitronic chip if that would have to do with anything.
View 13 RepliesI have a 2005 mkiv GLI and my gas gauge, temp gauge, and information display stopped working when the car is running. They work when the car is on auxiliary but not while it's running. The lights all work on the cluster all the time but the needles don't move as soon as the car turns on.

View 16 RepliesA couple months ago i posted that i had some choppy acceleration. I didn't do anything about it because I was looking for my vag-com cable but couldn't find it. well, i still haven't found it but my problem is getting worse. I have an older version of vag-com 303 and i think that it only supports serial.
Let me also describe my problem and what i have done so far to try and remedy it: basically, when i start to accel from a stop it doesn't accel smooth and feels like it is about to go limp and then all of a sudden i get this burst of accel. it is much more noticeable when accel from a stop but it is also noticeable when pressing the throttle, just does not accel smooth and once in a while, i get this sudden burst of power. And the car has gone into some kind of limp mode twice so far.
Once with my wife and just the other day when i was on the freeway, i lost all power and the EPC light came on and the ESP round arrow thingy. i pulled over, shut off the car and 30 sec later i was able to start driving again and all the lights went out, but of course, choppy accel still persists. the other day when i was accel i heard a POW from underneath. and my wife tells me she has heard it once before. when i remove the cable from the MAF everything goes back to normal. i cleaned the existing MAF, and when that did not work i replaced the MAF and still the same problem.
The transmission is a Six-speed MQ350 transmission in an MKIV 337 GTI.
I was driving last week and ran over a large snow chunk, heard it hit the underside of my car. A mile down the road my foot is resting on the clutch pedal at a stop light, and the clutch slowly went to the floor. It was still drivable, barely. The clutch came about an inch off the floorboard, but still caught. So i pull into the parking lot ahead of me, and was barely able to move the shifter left to right nor would the shifter go into gear. There were no fluids coming from under the car, nor could i see anything that looked wrong. I turned off, back on again. nothing. I then pulled the clutch pedal up from the floor and it went back to normal. Everything seems normal now, but the shifter seemed a little sticky yesterday from left to right.
This started recently and it's definitely out of the norm... When I activate my signal and it switches off, i still hear the ticking but no lights are flashing. it'll go on for about a few sec then shut off, sometimes comes on even when i didn't activate my blinkers. Also when i start my car i feel a vibration from under my feet. Sounds like a knocking noise when i accelerate/turn. But then goes away after about 20 seconds of driving.

That was almost a week ago, today I went back to the same place to get a short shifter, I told them the problem while I was there and they said it was my coil packages. I replaced all 4 and im still having the same problem...

Every time i accelerate, turn it on or rev it up it sounds like a turbo diesel truck! I have no clue what it could be..
Driving home from work, I was about 5 minutes from home, got to a light only to not be able to go into 1st. I popped it into 2nd and drove home like that pretty much. Car will let me get into reverse and all other gears.
I can put the shifter towards first but it doesn't fully go in and when I gave it gas it would let me start to creep and then grind a little and pop out.

I have a problem with my 20th anniversary gti. My 1st and 2nd gear won't work. Every other gear works fine, the gears never grind before or any unusually noise. I was pulling off my driveway and they just stop working. Even when the car it's on I can move my shifter to 1st and 2nd without the clutch and nothing happens.
View 3 RepliesSo I get in the car to move my car this morning and I can't get the car into 1st gear. It turns out I can't get the car into reverse, 1st gear, or even 3rd gear. It feels like something is blocking me from even approaching those gears, however the others (2,4,5,&6) seem to be fine.

I had it installed and ever since then when I am getting on it going from second to third it grinds a little bit going into third gear. It only does this when i get on it, but when im just cruising its fine. Could the shift linkage just need aligned? Or what else could it be?

View 16 RepliesSo I've been noticing that my GLi is tough to put into first gear sometimes. I feel almost like I have to jam it in place and hold it there, it doesn't just click in. Could this be the shifter cable ends or the cables themselves? Its weird... its only ever been a problem for 1st gear though.
View 15 RepliesI was driving home and noticed that it seemed harder to shove the gear shift into 1st gear. I stopped on the way home and discovered that I couldn't put the car into reverse, when I tried, and then started to drop the clutch and go in reverse, it was as if the car was locked into both reverse and a forward gear, the engine would bog and the car wouldn't budge.
I popped the hood and checked the shift rods and they looked OK, no obstructions or broken parts. I played with the gears for a bit and finally reverse gear suddenly started working again, but now 1st and 2nd gear are gone! it does not feel as if it's engaging the gears at all, the lever moves free. No different than having it in neutral. 3rd gear and above all still work OK, so I had to use 3rd gear to get the car moving.
