So I've been noticing that my GLi is tough to put into first gear sometimes. I feel almost like I have to jam it in place and hold it there, it doesn't just click in. Could this be the shifter cable ends or the cables themselves? Its weird... its only ever been a problem for 1st gear though.
View 15 RepliesSometimes (most of the time), when I shift from first to second, its either hard to do or it "pops" into gear. There's not like a grinding gear but it sounds like it is hitting something as it goes into gear. If I go 1st to 2nd while stopped, it goes in nice and smooth. It sort of feels like how you can't shift into 1st while you are moving slowly, you have to push on it a bit and then it finally pops in.
View 8 RepliesIt all started after it being cold outside it's hard to shift into second gear when i first start up the car, and then after a couple shifts like that i get a notchy shift. after a while of driving it all disappears.
View 3 RepliesI just recently bought a 337 edition gti and I absolutely love it. But the guy I bought it from says that it was chipped but he doesn't know what brand tune it is. But the problem, like the title suggests, is that in first gear the car pulls incredibly hard but as soon as I shift into second I lose all my momentum and it just feels sluggish.everyone that I've seen on these threads have said that I should be getting the most power I'm second and third gear. Is this tune just not a good one? Could there be something more?
View 7 RepliesI got the car like that. When I take off hard there is a crack somewhere in the front. Then when I stop hard it cracks too. What could it be??? Sometype of bushing??

The last couple days, we have been over 90 degrees in the afternoon. My black 03 20th 1.8t sits on the side of the road at work in the direct sun from 12:30 (lunch) until 5pm when I get off.
The last 2 days, when I have gone to start it, it cranks and cranks for 5-8 seconds before it starts to catch and finally stumbles to life. Once its running, everything feels fine. If I turn the car off and restart it, it starts fine.
In the mornings in the garage, evenings when its cooler or leaving for lunch before the day has gotten really hot, it starts fine. It only seems to be affected after sitting in the direct afternoon heat for a few hours.
I have read vapor lock, dying crank position sensor, ignition issues, starter etc. I am going to rule out the starter as the car cranks like normal. It simply does not fire.
So tonight at 8:30 I started up my car to get ready to leave work. I turned my light switch to activate the headlights and I only saw the amber light on the wall in front of me. I was worried because I need headlights in order to get home. I tried activating the fogs and turning the switch on and off but only my parking lights were working. I turned the car on and off a few times and all of a sudden the headlights finally turned on. I drove around town afterwards to run errands and the headlights were turning on just fine. What would cause this issue and I really don't want it to get to the point where I can't drive my car at night.
View 8 RepliesDriving home from work, I was about 5 minutes from home, got to a light only to not be able to go into 1st. I popped it into 2nd and drove home like that pretty much. Car will let me get into reverse and all other gears.
I can put the shifter towards first but it doesn't fully go in and when I gave it gas it would let me start to creep and then grind a little and pop out.

My 20th Ann. Is jerking under acceleration. When I hit the gas pedal slightly hard it starts jerking. Every once in a while the CEL will flash on and off. I changed the spark plugs and coil packs, cleaned the MAF, and now I have no real direction where to go. Maybe it could be a vaccum problem...
View 4 RepliesI just rolled 100k in the 337. Time to do some refreshing. 2 noticeable issues (non-motor related anyway )
1 - sometimes when turning hard left to right, or vice versa, I hear and feel a "cluck", almost like the something is shifting.
2 - I've got a creak from the front (and I think maybe the back too) when I get out of the car. Sometimes I hear it when I slowly go over a bump as well.
3- I think my rear shocks are on the way out.
In the last 15k I replaced both the inner and outer tie rods. That's all I've done to the suspension.
My gli has some trouble sometimes starting when parked upwards on a hill, I am thinking its the fuel pump..?
View 6 RepliesI have a problem with my 20th anniversary gti. My 1st and 2nd gear won't work. Every other gear works fine, the gears never grind before or any unusually noise. I was pulling off my driveway and they just stop working. Even when the car it's on I can move my shifter to 1st and 2nd without the clutch and nothing happens.
View 3 RepliesSo I get in the car to move my car this morning and I can't get the car into 1st gear. It turns out I can't get the car into reverse, 1st gear, or even 3rd gear. It feels like something is blocking me from even approaching those gears, however the others (2,4,5,&6) seem to be fine.

I had it installed and ever since then when I am getting on it going from second to third it grinds a little bit going into third gear. It only does this when i get on it, but when im just cruising its fine. Could the shift linkage just need aligned? Or what else could it be?

View 16 RepliesI was driving home and noticed that it seemed harder to shove the gear shift into 1st gear. I stopped on the way home and discovered that I couldn't put the car into reverse, when I tried, and then started to drop the clutch and go in reverse, it was as if the car was locked into both reverse and a forward gear, the engine would bog and the car wouldn't budge.
I popped the hood and checked the shift rods and they looked OK, no obstructions or broken parts. I played with the gears for a bit and finally reverse gear suddenly started working again, but now 1st and 2nd gear are gone! it does not feel as if it's engaging the gears at all, the lever moves free. No different than having it in neutral. 3rd gear and above all still work OK, so I had to use 3rd gear to get the car moving.
I had my first and second gear go out on my gti over a month ago, it sat at my house for a little over 2 weeks. When I finally was able to take it to the transmission shop it needed a jump. A week later my transmission was rebuilt and clutch replaced. Car needed a jump when leaving the shop too.
I took it home and a bit later tried to go somewhere and... nothing. Completely dead, won't charge or be jumped. Sunroof was half open and windows cracked. Rained that night so I had a make-shift cover with trash bags and a container top. (I don't know if this matters but just in case it may be water related.)
The next day I got a new battery and changed it. Car worked fine for 2 days. This morning I tried to start it and it fluttered and battery completely shut off. Jumped it and tried to take it around the block after few and it shut off mid drive, but was able to restart while rolling. Then when I pulled over and hit the four ways it immediately shut everything off again. I had someone come with cables so I could just get it home, and as soon as I connected the red cable to + it sparked and the lights and everything turned on, started right up. (the jumper cables were not connected to anything on the other side)
Finally I got it back home and when I pulled into the driveway and stopped I hit the window buttons and boom, everything off again.
Confusing story, but what could be wrong? I included everything just in case. (I have 2 keys, one which keyless entry works and one which it doesn't as of recent. I have used both. Don't know if immobilizer could be it either.)
I was driving and went to shift from 5th to 6th and when in 6th the engine just revved freely as if it was in neutral. When I tried to get back into 5th it did the same thing. It's also very hard to get into 1st.
I want to try the alignment but I can't find one specifically for the stock 6 speed and I don't have my Bentley DVD on me.
I have a 20th with 106k on it and I notice mostly my right front rubbing on hard turns. Suspension is totally stock other than a 28mm rear sway. Is it possible that's causing it or is my suspension just getting old? No spacer on the fronts.
View 9 RepliesI have an Imola 20th and recently i have been having some problems with my clutch. The pedal goes from being soft to very hard when its close to disengaging. It also engages very heavily when I go to let it out. This only started happening recently when temperatures started to drop if this has any effect on a clutch. Also, I replaced a shift fork two months ago and was curious if there was possibly anything going on with seals around the slave cylinder.
View 2 RepliesI have a 05 gli I just put a k04 turbo on. It runs on stock ecu but I have been told that's not the problem. When I start the car the rpm's spike to around 3 grand then slowly drop to normal idle rpm's when it gets under 1000 rpms the car starts to shake and idle hard. Idk what it is Cel is on and read misfires in 3 of 4 cylinders but checked plugs and everything they r fine. I'm thinking maybe vacuum leak or something along those lines.
