I just had my transmission fluid changed today and I have some clunking when I just start out in 1st or reverse. They told me my mounts are weak but not bad.
View 2 RepliesSo I get in the car to move my car this morning and I can't get the car into 1st gear. It turns out I can't get the car into reverse, 1st gear, or even 3rd gear. It feels like something is blocking me from even approaching those gears, however the others (2,4,5,&6) seem to be fine.
View 14 Repliesit all started out like this. i was unable to go into reverse took it to a shop when first and second were good. Came out of the shop after inspection and now i can shift into first or second gear but not the rest, its stuck in those two and they do not work. do i need a new trans or is it a shift fork and or linkage?
View 11 RepliesI parked the car yesterday and everything was working fine. I go out this morning to go to work and i cannot get the car to go into reverse. I put it in neutral and attempted to push it out of my parking spot, but when I took my foot off the clutch, it stalled like it was still in gear even though the stick was in the neutral position. While still in the neutral position, i can still move forward as if it were in first. When i put it in reverse and attempt to move, i get no movement. I can get it to move forward, but it refuses to go into reverse. I have no diagnostic lights illuminated and the car has no issues running or starting.
View 14 RepliesSo the other day was driving my car... And he said reverse quit working. I'm nowhere near my car right now, but it sounds like the same thing that it had done for me a few times. Basically, the gear shift won't go into the slot for reverse, and even first is hard to get into sometimes. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't... My car's a 337 with an O2M transmission.

View 1 RepliesI have a 2006 GLI 6speed manual, and am having a weird noise when doing certain things. The best way to describe the noise is perhaps clunking? kinda like if you put a ball in a metal container and then tilt it, and the noise that the ball makes when it hits the side of the container is what i hear. It sounds like its coming from the underside of the car and doesn't really happen unless I accelerate quickly, turn at a little bit of a faster rate, or slow down alot.
At first i thought it was infact a ball or something rolling around but I haven't been able to find anything of that nature in my car. It sounds like it could be coming from the passenger side near the glove box or under the center console. After getting info about a clunking noise and how it can be fixed by tightening a few bolts on the underside of the car. As i am unsure if they are experiencing the same clunking noise I think i hear, i decided to ask this on a new forum. I think its either loose bolts, or perhaps something with the shocks or struts.
well what are the chances that all in one week.. I would get my front end hit in the same spot that i just fixed.
get a crack in my windshield.
get a flat tire.
Have the tab that holds the passenger sun visor in place break off.
Have a new "clunking" noise in the front end.
For a couple of weeks, when i put my car in reverse and also sometimes in first, I hear a weird clunking sound coming from under/around my feet when i release the clutch and start taking off....is the clutch gone or going soon???
View 5 RepliesI started noticing the noise about a week ago, When i seem to let of the gas or even once in a wail push on the gas Hear a "CLICK" noise, this is not when pressing the brakes at all only when letting off pedal?
I am thinking it could be transmission, but have read it could be a few thing, From the brake pads to CV joint to trow out bearing, Axles, Lightened flywheel, Motor mounts, etc. But i am unsure where to start, Its and O2M 6spd tranny in my 20th, with lsd installed, lightened flywheel, VFmotormounts...
Car was great this weekend, then on saturday, every time I shift my car clunks right near the tranny when I release the clutch. Its a loud noise. Clutch was done around 2500 miles ago. South Bend stg 1 with a LWFW (I know, wish I stayed with a DM). And if I drive in first and second and come off the gas without shifting, it also knocks once really loud. It isn't a back fire or anything it almost feels like the dogbone mount is bad? Also, over 4000 rpm my car sounds deeper sounding than before.
View 7 RepliesWe purchased her GLI a couple of months ago, as is, knowing the issues it had and whatnot. We talked the dealer down so much that he refused a warranty.
This pesky *clunk* sound coming from the driver side front-end. Usually on bumps, it sounds like a suspension deal... We took it into a shop, they "re-torqued" the suspension, and did the alignment. It was good for about a week, then it came back. Also, there's a creaking sound when turning, my guess is CV boots? Axles?

My 20th just recently started making clunking noises around the front left wheel area. It sounds like when I let off the gas it sounds like something is shifting forward... I don't think it is the engine mounts I'm wondering if its something with the suspension. The suspension is the stock 20th suspension.
View 4 RepliesI get up to go to work today and the car runs fine, a few hours later i get back in, try to put it in reverse, and nothing.. it wont let me shift in after i push it down. So i push it back in neutral and drive away.. every gear works fine, when i got home i took off the boot, tried to see if anything was loose, shake it a few times and out of nowhere first and second give. They were working perfectly 5 min before, and now they just feel really loose, but every other gear works fine, so now I have no reverse, 1st or 2nd. Did I just knock something out of alignment or is the problem a lot worse.

View 10 RepliesI have a 20th ae Gti. When i bought the car it has installed a EIP Short Shifter and it was working fine, But... Yesterday i cant shift to reverse. So i decide to take a look since that was the first time that i have a problem with that, i thought that was something wrong with the Short Shifter so i decide to see how to install the Short Shifter so i can Re do it all by my self and now i cant Find any gear, No reverse, no 1st no 2d not even neutral.
View 2 RepliesSo i went to start up my car after about an hour of not driving , (previously working fine) and I am not able to shift into reverse 1st or 2nd , ive been looking around and i guess the options are linkage, gear selectors, gear box or tranny.... Its a 337 so its a 6 speed . don't know if that makes a difference

View 7 RepliesMy car, whenever i am moving in reverse, makes this noise. It is not a clicking noise, but almost sounds like the ring of a church bell. It is not the banging of the bell but the ring of one. In the searches, everything and everyone was talking about a clicking, but mine is a loud ringing noise, and I have no clue, It also sound like the noise is coming from the back of the car.
View 19 RepliesWell, like the title says, The trans is stuck in third gear, with no other gears, or neutral or reverse. The car is slightly modified 02 GTI 337. APR Chip, Forge TIP, Full 3" exhaust, Greddy FMIC. I definitely drive the car, and had been beating up on it on the highway for a little on my way in to work, then on the way home, down shifted to pass someone, dropped it third, passed them, went to shift to fourth, Shifter moved, felt like it engaged "a gear" and then then i let off the clutch and it was still in third.
I also noticed that unless, I press the clutch in the, the car stays in this gear, even when the shifter is in neutral. I looked at the linkage, and it appears to be functioning. I did some reading around the Vortex and it seems like this might be a shift fork problem. Also, if the trans will be apart, what items should be upgraded?
