Ford Transmission :: 1996 - Delay In Transmission?

Sep 28, 2013

I recently bought a 1996 ford Ranger sxt extended cab with 4liter engine and having issues with the transmission ,automatic. I will try to explain best I can the problems. When the transmission shifts from first to second it seems to start the shift and then about 3 to 5 seconds later it finishes it. From second to third right before it shifts the rpms rise a little and then it shifts ,often with a little jerk. when it shifts into od it shifts very smoothly shortly after 3rd. I just bought the truck and have put less than 50 miles on it,I dont know any thing about the truck(servicing,maintenance etc) What do you think is the issue and what would you do to try and solve it ? I unfortunetly am not a mechanic but have to learn to be as after buying it money is tight! I am on a fixed income and a small one at that !

Ford - Ranger :: 2001 3.0 / V6 2WD - Slight Delay In Transmission From 1st To 2nd Gear

My truck has 112,000 miles on it and I have been having a slight delay in the transmission from 1st to 2nd. The switch is easily felt but, it's not a hard clunk when it engages. After that there's no problem. Additionally, when I switch to reverse it can take a full second to feel it engage before I give it gas. The transmission fluid looks fine and the levels are fine, too. Have not had a flush done and but I was thinking about changing the fluids and seal.Also, wanted to ask about my rear suspension. The leaf springs have lost a bit of their spring and was wondering if those "add a leaf" kits are worth it. The truck rides level but any loads in the bed cause it to really sag. I put new shocks in which improved the quality but the concern is just the leafs.

Ford Transmission :: 4r70 - Long Delay Going Into Drive / Skipping Second

I have a 97 F150 4.6 4x4. Many, many miles on this truck. Issues I am having are as follows.

1) Long delay going into drive. From reverse or neutral it takes an abnormally long time to engage drive. When it does finally engage it does so softly, not abruptly like my 4r100 expedition or my 4r70 going into reverse. Have not noticed any slipping under hard or light acceleration though.

2) The trans seem to skip second under light-medium acceleration. It will shift to second and immediately shift to third, or just skip second all together. I can always force it into 2nd with the lever and doesn't slip, but does seem to take a while to engage.

3) Possibly shift flare. mostly between 1-2 and 3-o/d.

None of these issues happen 100% of the time, but regularly enough for me to notice. Fluid is at proper level. I have all four gears and reverse.

Ford Excursion :: Low Power - Poor Mileage - Transmission Delay Going Into Reverse

For the past two years I've noticed a decrease in fuel economy and recently noticed that the truck did not "feel" as if it had the same power especially when towing. Checking all the usual suspects with the engine turned up nothing and the transmission wasn't showing any signs of problems other than an occasional delay going into reverse. But it had been doing that for years and so I just ignored it.

Recently the torque converter started acting up and had some other occasional shifting delays and so decided to put the vehicle in the shop. The electronics all checked out and so a HD rebuild kit was ordered. The truck was finished this morning. Just barely pressing the accelerator makes the vehicle instantly start forward with noticeable zip. Plenty of power at all speeds, the engine now feels like new.

I suspect the main culprit was the torque converter. It wasn't enough to notice in excessive rpms nor heat (at least according to the instrument gauge) but the loss is noticeable in hindsight when compared to the repaired system. Over the next few weeks I'll get some mileage numbers and will know for sure whether I've found the sole cause of my power problems but I am sure that I've made a fairly large step in solving them.

Ford Transmission :: 2005 F350 - 3 To 4 Seconds Delay When Trying To Engage Drive Or Reverse

Still having issues with the transmission on my 05 F350. I posted before that it would take a few seconds to go into drive or reverse. The fixes were to change filters and do hot flush. I had the dealer do a hot flush, and then I put about 1000 miles on it. That didn't seem to fix anything, so I went back in and asked for more info. They did not change the filters. I thought they did, but found out they did not after the fact, so I decided to change the filters myself.

The interior filter was easy to change. The fluid was clean, and the magnet had shavings on it but nothing that seemed extraordinary. The exterior filter is impossible to get off. I reviewed posts on here before trying, so first was the impact wrench, then the pipe wrench, then the pipe wrench with a block wedged in to keep the thing from bending, still no luck. The cast nut broke off well before the pipe wrench came out of the drawer. How to get that thing off. I read on here somewhere that no fluid goes through that until 180 degrees, is that correct?

Scanguage says it rarely goes over 160, except for last evening when I was stuck in traffic. It went to 187, with ECT at 208. During this period, traveling under 40 most of the time, the transmission was shifting erratically, to the point I wanted to pull over and allow it to cool down. But traffic broke free, speed went up, and temps went down. Shifting returned to normal, except when trying to engage drive or reverse. The 3-4 second delay persists at any temp, and there doesn't seem to be any slippage. Just delayed and sometimes hard engagements. I'm at a loss for whats wrong.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2015 - Delay In Transmission To Engage When Start And Put Shifter In D

2015 F-250 4X4 CC gas truck. 6R140 Transmission..

My truck has 6500 miles on it and since day one when I put my shifter in (D) there is a 3-4 sec delay in the transmission to engage every morning when I start out, rest of the time there is no delay even when the truck sits all day at work (about 9 hours). I have read in 2011 (?) that the transmission was loosening it's prime and would cause this problem, so how it's got me thinking.

Honda :: 2003 - Delay In Transmission Shift?

I had the transmission in a 2003 Honda V6 rebuilt in Nov. 2014. It is slow to change when starting off and slow to change into the next gear. Sounds like it is hung up for a while. Is this normal for a recently rebiult Transmission?

Rodeo :: Automatic Transmission - Delay In Shift Points Going From 2nd To 3rd Gear

I started experiencing a delay in my shift points going from 2nd to 3rd gear. Then today I was driving and my automatic transmission wouldn't shift into third gear...the speedometer stuck at 20 mph...and it would rev all the way to red line, but wouldn't shift.

There is no "abnormal" noise coming from the transmission, or from the drive train. I suspect that this has something to do with the shift points and the computer rather than a mechanical problem with the transmission.

I would like to know what it could be before I take it into the dealer to get it diagnosed.

Lexus GX 2004-09 :: 2006 GX470 Transmission - Delay In Gears Shifting

2006 GX470, ~65k mi. When shifting from P to R, P to D, or R to D, the transmission often (but not always) seems to have to think about it a while. When it shifts fine it takes about 1sec for the transmission to change gears. When it's being cranky it takes ~4secs. There are no other symptoms.

Accent MC (2006-11) :: 2008 - Transmission Slipping A Bit / Delay In Gear Shifting

I have a 2008 Accent (base model for the most part, no C/C), and my transmission seems to be slipping a bit. The symptoms are: slow acceleration, a delay in gear shifting, and after the 30MPH mark, it takes forever to get up to anything near 60. I just wanted to know if it's a simple solution such as topping off the transmission fluid, or if it's a bigger issue.

Saturn - Sl :: 2002 - Automatic Transmission - Shifting Delay When Put In Reverse Gear

I'm having problems with my automatic transmission in a 2002 Saturn SL. About 2 months ago I noticed a delay when I would put my saturn in reverse and it would sort of kick into gear after a few seconds (up to 10seconds sometimes). I wasn't worried much about this at first until another problem started happening. Between second and third gear it seems to be shifting slow/hard(?). I can feel where it wants to shift, but its slow to shift and actual revs high before shifting down. The problem doesn't always exist, and some days its more then others. We took it to get a transmission fluid/filter change and this didn't solve the problem. Took it back for a transmission diagnositc and GM told us we need to replace the transmission or do an overhaul. They didn't explain why really though- no clear answer. I've heard everything from the torque converter to a solenoid problem.

Mitsubishi - Galant :: 1998 - Delay In Transmission Development - Won't Engage In Reverse

I have a 1998 Mitsubishi Galant, 4cyl., 165, 000 miles. Without previous symptoms, one day the transmission developed a delay of 5 to 30-seconds before it would engage in reverse. The fluid was clean and I have been using the Mitsubishi brand that they recommend. So I replaced the original transmission with a used one. But the reverse delay continued, even with a different transmission. So I removed the used transmission and rebuilt the original one. The problem STILL remained. Since then, the valve body has been replaced and the speed sensor has been replaced. I cannot figure out why there is a delay when putting it into reverse. I ran out of solutions. I did notice one day that when I first start the car, and the engine is at 1000 RPM's or more, the reverse wouldn't engage. Then, as the RPM's dropped to about 200 RPM's, the reverse would engage. I thought maybe this would be a clue.

Lexus RX 2004-09 :: 2008 RX350 - Excessive Slipping Or Delay In Response In Transmission

I have a 2008 RX350 AWD with only 500 miles on it so far and I am starting to get concerned about what seems to be excessive slipping or a delay in response in the trans. Under normal forward driving the trans seems to shift very smooth. The problem occurs under situations where I am coming to a near stop, basically coasting, and then have to accelerate again to continue forward. This could be in a slow moving traffic type situation or when maneuvering through a parking lot. When I try to execute a small increase in speed the engine revs but the trans doesn't respond.

It's as though it's in neutral and unable to decide which gear it should be in. After a 2 to as long as a 5 second delay it finally engages and moves forward. The condition is even worse if I am heading into a slight incline. Once it is engaged everything is fine and the subsequent shifts are very smooth. When starting from a complete stop it works perfectly. I've never had a transmission slip this much in any vehicle. There was one situation where I was almost broadsided because the RX delayed in moving forward.

I realize this is a subjective call but I am trying to determine what level of slipping in the trans is considered normal under the conditions I've described. I have searched and read past threads about issues with the earlier model years but I thought they were resolved by now. I haven't taken the RX in for service yet but I fear I will get the standard - everything is working as designed - answer from my dealership.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2005 - Transmission Fluid Low - Delay When Shifting In All Gears Intermittently

I have a 2005 2.5 vw jetta.

It has 150,000 miles....the cars been working just fine untill DEC of last year. I had the dealer check the transmission fluid and they said it was low....so they flushed and refilled the transmission oil...they didnt see any metal but that didnt fix the problem.....

Now i have the car not shifting correctly ....theres a delay when shifting in all gears but it is intermittent, sometimes it shifts hard and sometimes you can just baby the throttle and it wont shift as hard.....once on the freeway the car runs fine......but when coming to a stop you can feel the downshifting.....

I figured it has something to do with the valve body....my concern is the dealerships have quoted me 2000$ to replace the valve-body....the cars paid for and was wondering if i should just move onto a different jetta or fix this one?

If i fix the valve body will this jetta have the same issue later? Also i do have the vacuum pump leaking engine oil....not much can this be fixed while doing the valve body job???

Ford Transmission :: 1996 F250 Will Only Shift To 3rd Gear

On my 96' F-250 4x4, The tranny will shift to 3rd gear and that's it. If I put it in Neutral and then back into drive it will stay in 4th gear for about 15 seconds then go back to 3rd. What could be causing that?

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1996 - Transmission Slipping When Cold

I have a 1996 Ford Ranger with 95k miles on it. Recently, my truck's automatic transmission has been slipping really bad. I'll be driving down my road and while going around a turn, the clutch feels like it randomly disengages, so when I press on the gas, it feels like I'm revving my truck in neutral, and then it will all of a sudden get back into gear, violently a lot of the time. However, once the truck is warmed up, the it runs perfectly and never slips. I've checked my oil multiple times and even changed the oil filter in the transmission. I am not sure if this has anything to do with it, but if I let my truck idle in park for a little bit, the RPMs will increase and if I shift in to reverse or drive while the RPMs are high, it'll do the same thing.

Ford Transmission :: 1996 F150 Not Shifting Into Second Under Full Throttle

96 F150 carbed 300 with a C6/208 SAS44/9" with 3.55 on 35s.

I put a transgo shift kit in the transmission before putting it in the truck, it also has a small stall. At half throttle you can manually shift 1-2-3 with no issue at all. Under full throttle when you shift to second it won't go into second until you push the shifter into third. Then it'll go to second and spin the tires when it grabs second in dirt. This is all in 4lo, I was gonna switch to 2hi and try it but it's raining and I don't feel like crawling under it to change it. The truck is a mud toy so will spend 90% of its time in 4lo.

I don't have a vacuum line currently hooked to the transmission because I have the same shiftkit (transgo) in my 77 and no vacuum line on it either and it works fine.

Ford - Explorer :: 1996 V6 - Transmission Engages Then Slips Right Back Out

'96 Explorer 4.0l V6 4X4... 214,000 miles. So, I'm having some transmission slippage and was wondering what can be done about it. You see the mileage and the only thing done to the trans was a drain and filter/fluid replacement at 120,000 miles.

Here's what's going on... When cold, in the morning, I put it in drive, trans engages, I move maybe 20 feet and it disengages. I wait up to 20-30 seconds and it engages and slips right back out. I wait, engages, move 50 feet and it disengages. You get the picture. After doing this 4-5 times it will engage and I can drive a 100 miles with no problem. Seems like it need to build up pressure or warm up before it will drive normally. I've checked the fluid and it is at the correct level. I guess my question is, would I be wasting time and money to replace the filter and fluid again or is it just warn out?

I've read when a trans starts slipping after it's warmed up means it needs a rebuild and mine is the opposite.
