My tuck has been making a whining noise very similar to this and only when it's below freezing out. At 5 degrees it's even louder. Just noticed it the other day. Sounds like power steering whine. I have the 6.2 super duty.

View 14 RepliesThis week was our first nice week of the year. Monday I got in my truck at lunch time turned the a.c. on and it blew ice cold. Today my truck sat in the sun all day and I got in it and turned the a.c. on. I noticed instead of the normal "click" you hear when the clutch engages in the a.c. compressor I got a wine and wimper kind of noise. The system never cooled the air after this happened. Is the compressor shot? Is it safe to drive or is the compressor going to tear itself up and send metal pieces thru the system?

Just got this truck a few weeks ago... cannot trace the oil leak. Is this common?
I got a 2003 5.4L Auto F-250 Super-duty CC yesterday and noticed it needed newer/new tires. I found some today and got them put on. I looked when the tires were off and all the tie rods, brakes, etc looked good. After leaving the tire shop the check engine light came on, I drove about 10kms on the hwy and it seemed fine then I got into town and made a stop.
When I was leaving there to go home I heard something that sounded like a chain dragging for a second then when I braked at lights the truck started jumping kind of so I pulled over and everything still looked fine. So I drove another 5kms and it was fine except for 1-2 lights it happened again, the brakes would squeal when stopping.
Then when accelerating from a light the truck would shake and make scraping noises until I hit about 30kms per hour, this happened whenever I heard the squealing at the few stops I had to do at lights. Some lights I stopped at and it was normal. The tires that were on the truck originally were mismatched, different sized and smaller than the stock size. The ones I put on are all the same set, and are 265-75-R16. what this could be?
I bought my 2011 F250 FX4 about 2 months ago. A little about the truck: 6.2 liter gas. XL FX4. Manual 4x4. 6 speed auto. Supercab. Long bed. 42,000 miles. (1,000 of them mine.)
Until yesterday, the truck has performed absolutely flawlessly under all conditions. Then, randomly, I had what felt like a "missed shift" as I was leaving my dog's veteranarian yesterday. I pulled out onto the highway and as the truck attempted to shift into second gear, it didn't "catch" second. The gas just revved up and I had to take my foot off the gas pedal and put it back down to get second gear to engage. Most of my driving is stop and go around town and this has only happened once in probably well over a thousand stop and go situations. Should I be worried or was it just a fluke?
Also, FWIW, I did plenty of stop and go driving today without a single problem.
The truck is a 2012 f250 6.2 flex fuel from alberta canada. This isn't the first tranny form out there that I've heard do this. Tranny seems fine shifts all right just a whine while accelerating.
View 7 RepliesMy 2003 just doesn't drive right anymore. I bought some new tires and all of a sudden it crabs when on the highway 70-80 mph. I have new ball joints. Hubs, and a few other front end parts to rectify the issue with no luck. Alignment shops haven't been any favor either. Tire shop replaced the tires with sweet michelins that worked minimally. So I went to measure the wheelbase, center to center and sure enough there is a 1-1/2" difference between the left and right side. I have had a few minor bumper dings, one at appx 20 mph, but nothing earth shattering. Can something be loose in the rear end? It does feel like the rear wants to swing around and be in front.
View 8 RepliesI recently switched back over to the 5.4 from a diesel. It's a 08 F350. I have about 38,000 on it now. I have no complaints so far, a little less power than the diesel, but I don't tow much anyways. The only thing I can't figure out is a strange noise at around 2500-3000 rpms shortly before a shift sometimes. The best way I can think to describe it is that it sounds like a turbo fart in a diesel. Almost like someone is putting their finger over an air hose on and off a couple times. It doesn't do it all the time, and doesn't shake the truck, or effect the shift at all from what I can tell.
I've put it through a lot of different shifts just to see if it might be transmission related. It downshifts and upshifts perfectly without any noise or slipping, and the fluid looks just as clean as brand new. No smell or anything either. It doesn't feel like torque converter shudder to me either as i can't actually feel anything in the truck, just the small noise. To me it almost sounds like it's coming from under the hood. I'm not overly worried about it right now, because it isn't effecting the way the truck drives or shifts at all, I'm just curious what it could be.
I've got a 2016 250 6.2l and am getting a popping sound coming from the transmission area. the following is what i have figured out so far. the noise is made just before a complete stop, just as the tranny down shifts to 1st and can be felt through the manual floor shifter 100% of the time and heard roughly 90% of the time. sound ranges from not audible to loud and is random in how loud it is. the only way it does not do this is if i come to a stop in neutral or i go slow enough as not to have the tranny shift out of first from my last stop. the only other way is if i do one of those long, slow rolling stops. truck only has 6600 miles on it. i will be taking it in at 7500 for first service and have them look at it ...
View 1 RepliesIn the last few hundred miles of driving, I notice there is a strange noise coming from what appears to be the front end of my truck. It sounds similar to a buzzsaw or a power sanding tool whenever it comes in contact with an object. The noise starts at around 30 mph, stops from 55-60mph, and starts again around 65 mph. The truck rides and drives normally and there doesn't seem to be any metal to metal contact noises or clunking and the hubs dont seem to be hot to the touch. I was thinking improperly balanced tires, wheel bearing, or front carrier assembly. What it could be? The noise just suddenly started and I was wondering if I should keep driving it?
View 7 RepliesOkay, so this is a very intermittent problem but it has been happening more and more lately. When this scenario happens, it is like the rough spot when driving in manually locked 4WD when turning the wheel, but it is where the steering wheel would be to go completely straight and when I try and correct it, it is like the wheel just over corrects when I try and the truck heads the direction the wheel is facing. I'm not sure what this problem is but it is really confusing me. The hubs are both in auto and the ESOF switch is to 2WD if that makes a difference. And it happened today after I made a left turn into the parking lot on campus.
View 14 RepliesMy dad just bought a 2001 F-250 Crewcab 4x4 w/V-10. 72,000 miles. Anyways i noticed a small almost exhaust leaking sound on the test drive. I had the dealership put it up on the rack so I could see the underside. I noticed that it has the famous broken manifold bolt. So I kinda wrote it off on that we would have to get that fixed soon. Anyways the noise hasn't gotten worse just now noticing it that it has set times when it happens.
It happens around 25 mph then goes away then back at 45 mph, then goes away. I am having a hard time describing it. Almost like the exhaust is building up pressure then releasing it when it gets too high. But then I starting thinking transmission something since it kinda has a delayed shift when the noise happens.To clarify I am not saying it anything to do with the torque converter. I am just rolling to find out what is going on.
I have a '16 F250 4wd with the 6.7 and approx 3k miles. There has been a strange sound coming from the front end when turning left from a stoplight. It sounds like something slides or shifts and it only happens once in a while. The noise isn't loud but you can feel it.
View 2 RepliesBrand new to diesels with an 02 F250, 7.3 auto, 149k, 4R100. I have been hearing a whine (not the turbo...) for the last few days and after searching the web I'm freaked out about transmission issues. The whine is mostly present in gear while accelerating, I can slightly hear it in park/neutral as well. The sound is a little higher pitched than a power steering pump, pitch rises with acceleration but doesn't FALL as fast as the RPM with shifts, it lags for just a second then drops and starts the climb again with the next gear (i feel like this is indicative of something?). Runs fine and drives like what I would think is normal, only leak i see looks to be from valve covers making its way to everything. Transmission fluid looks great on the dipstick.
View 1 RepliesSo it was -10 last night didn't have my truck plugged in fired it up this morning took a few cranks but started heard a wine under the hood figured it was cold let it warm up for a half hour went to a buddy's for a party left a few hours later driving home truck was up to temp running fine then I thought I heard a wine again turned my music off rolled my windows down and it sounded like a Cummings lopping shaking like crazy lost power couldn't make it up a hill and bogged out and died look under it and has some oil on the axle tube called for a tow truck ten time no answers so I tried to fire up again and stared and ran fine made it home no problems. My question is is it a fuel issue I use anti gel every fill up but is it still possible maybe water? Or could it be my hpop it hasn't thrown any codes or lights all pressures and gauges read fine. Also my rear main leaks along with oil pan was it just some water running through or should I be worried...
View 2 RepliesI have a 2013 f350 with the 6.2L gas and automatic transmission...when it sits idling in gear or park it starts to whine or squeal for about 30 seconds then stops and starts again. it makes a horrible sound if you shut the truck off while it's making the noise... Ford has had the truck for 5 weeks and checked the motor for vacuum leaks and changed the torque converter...but it's still doing it but less frequently now but according to them it's louder. I have a video but don't know how to upload it. if you go to YouTube and search ford raptor whine it shows a raptor making the same noise also.
View 7 RepliesSo I had a strange vibration coming from the drivers side wheel intermittently. Only when the hubs were in Auto , by locking them it would not happen. With hubs in Auto when it occurs switching into 4H made it stop immediately.
It would occur after small bumps and sound like driving over a rumble strip. I figured it sounds like a needle bearing in the hub going wonky and just replaced the entire sealed unit. So that should be it right? Nope.....
The vibration has changed tone and sound but still occurred after a slight bump to the right Driver Side tower. It now is a much deeper tone then before.
I made sure everything was reassembled correctly and tight. I notice however that if I remove the ESOF lockouts to rule them out it still occurs (no lockout in at all ) .
I can move the outer DS stub shaft quite a bit with one finger when the lockouts are not installed. Which would explain that why when the lockouts are installed and I lock the hubs it doesn't occur as the end of the stub shaft rides in the lockout.
I haven't changed the outer axle seals , but they really didn't look shot. It appears as if the play in the axle is coming from the pumpkin.
Side note: I took apart everything and cleaned it , there was mud, crud, dirt and water throughout the hum to and into the lockouts. see pix below for the mess and carnage. I cleaned and lubed everything up.
So after this weekend's hurricane my 2011 f-250 started to making a noise when I accelerate. I don't know if water got in some where. But there's no MIL light coming on.
View 11 RepliesI have a 2004 Ford F250 Turbo Diesel, egr delete, headstuds, intake, dual stacks, etc and when i turn my wheel a loud whining noise comes from under the hood, I noticed it put tension in my brakes. When I accelerate it gets louder and when i let off the gas it goes away... i checked my fluid in my steering pump and it was low so i put some more in and the next day it was all sitting under neath the truck.... any quick fix or do i need to replace the whole pump?
View 2 RepliesI'm having an issue with my 2001 F350 V10. A seriously annoying high pitched whining noise appeared a while ago, then disappeared, and has now come back.
It happens as soon as I start my truck, whether it's cold or warmed up already. it increases in pitch and loudness as I increase RPM, it also does exactly the same in neutral. As soon as I put it in gear (R, D, 2, 1) it completely disappears and will come back as soon as I shift back to P or N. Strangely, if I drive around town for a few minutes, when I get back home and shift to park the sound doesn't really come back, sometimes it will be faint but usually it's totally gone. But if I shut the truck off and turn it right back on again then it's there again.
It's coming from somewhere in the engine compartment or close but due to the nature of the sound it's very difficult to locate. I got underneath using a screwdriver as a stethoscope and listened to the transmission, transfer case, starter, oil pan and even the gastank and it doesn't sound like it's coming directly from any of them. While underneath I noticed power steering fluid leaking from the pump behind the pulley and dripping off the hose. Somehow though I don't think it's related as the sound disappears in gear and doesn't change at all when turning the wheels. I cleaned the fluid off and drove around a bit and it doesn't seem to be leaking too badly and my reservoir is totally full.
The truck otherwise is driving as good as it always has and whatever this sound is doesn't seem to be having any effect on performance (yet...) ...
