Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Brake Fluid Reservoir Flimsy
Aug 14, 2016
My brake fluid reservoir is real flimsy. I was checking fluids and noticed when I touched it, It felt like it was going to fall off.

View 7 RepliesThere are 2 metal straps going left to right between the rear seat mounts. They don't appear to do anything. The seat doesn't touch them. The mounts are bolted to the floor so they don't give support. What they are for?
View 13 RepliesBack, I flushed when it turned opaque...
Then I bought a car engineered to last more than just a couple 100K miles and was surprised to find a lot of items in the preventive maintenance list that I never thought about.
It recommended flushing every 30K or 2 years. A bit of research showed this was also recommended by several other manufacturers. Even more common with advent of ABS.
So now I try to flush at least every 2 or 3 years.
I still have not found any recommendations from Ford or GM? Either I'm blind or (cynic stepping in) they still don't expect vehicles to last that long... Or like to sell replacement parts?
Should brake fluid be changed periodically? If so, how often?
View 7 RepliesI have replaced the cruise control cut off switch and post-recall pig tail twice in two years for fluid leaks. Whats the deal do they all leak?
View 6 RepliesSo I recently replaced my brakes and rotors with parts from frozen rotors. Today, I noticed a smell coming from my truck right before I got it home. I also noticed before the smell, it was pulling to the left. And when I braked, also pulling to the Left. I think I may have a brake dragging. I have heard about the caliper slide pins freezing, but when I replaced my brakes and rotors, none of them were frozen and appeared to be in good shape. I have the truck jacked up now with the wheel removed and didn't find anything apparent. I just took the caliper off and had my buddy press on the brake slowly while I watched the pistons. Only the piston closest to the fluid inlet came out. The other one did not move. Does this indicate any type of malfunction?
View 9 RepliesI have a 2008 f-250 6.4 Diesel. Yesterday the Brake Fluid light came on. I thought maybe a sensor, but once I parked and checked I realized my brake fluid was down to the Min line. I started looking for a leak and it was apparent that it was the front drivers wheel area.
I am attaching a picture of the brake. The leak is either coming from the area where the fluid line runs into the gold thing (caliper?) or the bolt at the bottom of the gold thing.
I have power steering fluid leaking out of the bottom of the Brake master cylinder out of a round hole. Every time I pushed brakes it leaks a good amount of power steering fluid out. Why it would do this and is there a screw missing out of the hole or what?
View 6 RepliesI have a 2005 F350 XL Heavy Duty 6.0L truck that has 68,XXX miles. I recently changed the rear brake pads and about a week later the rear passenger side is leaking brake fluid. The fluid is slowly dripping from the bottom caliper bolt but i am not sure if there are seals in this area. the driver side is fine and the fluid is only leaking from the bottom caliper bolt not the top.
View 2 RepliesI just purchased a 2007 Ford F250 5.4l V8. I noticed the coolant reservoir was a bit low so I went out and bought some Prestone extended life universal coolant, distilled water and a hydrometer. The current Coolant I have is a yellow/gold colour, which I believe is motocraft brand. I added 150ml 1:1 of distilled water and coolant. After that I tested the temperature rating and it was off the gauge (the previous owner obviously added just coolant and no water). My plan was to drain the radiator half way and refill with distilled water. But, how to do that I came across a lot of forums saying you can't mix Prestone ELT with Motocraft coolant or it will eat away at your engine as well as create a thick goo. Is this true? Will such a small amount (75ml) cause this effect? Do I have to do a radiator flush now, or can I just continue with my plan of draining it half way? The old coolant looked pretty clean. Do you think the Prestone anti freeze has already done any damage?
View 14 RepliesIs it necessary to remove say about one and one half cups of oil from the HPOP reservoir when changing oil? I say not needed.
View 3 Replies02 v10 SD. I found a crack in the coolant tank on my 02 Superduty. It is below the radiator cap, just above the crack where it was sealed from the factory. It runs the length of the tank, about 2 and 1/2 inches, across the front top section. Its starting to seep through, but the radiator is still holding pressure. Have any of you with the older Superduty's had this happen to your trucks? What caused or is causing it. I called the Ford dealer tonight about a new one.
View 14 RepliesAny hows I have a 08 186,000 miles with a 6.4 , my problem is it is dumping coolant out of the reservoir. local dealer has got me for $4000,00 as of today and has not fixed truck yet. I really don't want to have to spend the money on a shop to rebuild it...
View 6 Repliesmy 2000 f550 master cylinder reservoir plastic is cracked from vibration and it would be good to know if it can be replaced separately than having to purchase a new complete unit.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2004 F250 with 5.4 Triton engine. It stalls when tapping on Power steering reservoir! This is the oddest thing I've ever seen! I did not get time to look into it today but will sure do so tomorrow.
View 2 RepliesI have 460 7.5L gasoline engine on a RV. After driving 300 miles straight and the front start smoking and I pulled over and saw the transmission fluid just shooting out from right in front of the trans oil pan, hot and steaming. Also saw the trail of oil a mile from where I stopped. All oil are gone. Next day go back and put in 2.5 gallons of oil until I see the oil dripping down the bottom. Drove to Aamco transmission, 12 miles down in 20 min. Nothing happen, not a drop coming out.
I left it there in the parking lot on Sunday. Today the shop called and said they found nothing wrong. They said I just overfill it and they drain down 1.5 quart, it is all fine now. Then I told them the story. I said the oil were shooting out and all empty out. I put in 2.5 gallons , not quarts. They said it didn't make any sense. I don't know what to tell them. The RV is still in his shop and he said he will look at it more and see what he find.
I have a 2001 Ford F250 V10 crew cab, I am getting trans fluid in radiator. i have had radiator replaced. it was good for about 3 months.

I put in about a quart of MERCON-compatible this weekend when the level was low. Found out that last tranny flush used MERCON V.
Now I have at least a quart of the MERCON-compatible in with the MERCON V fluid.
Should I not worry and just use MERCON V from now on, or will the two fluids have problems in my tranny?
1999 F250 SD... Tranny fluid is low, tranny slipped one time on me. I checked the fluid and it's low. No drips on the garage floor, so I'll have to inspect closer. But my question is can I add new fluid without screwing it up even more? It's got 170,000 miles and I doubt the fluid has ever been changed. I just bought the truck last week, so I can't say for sure, but it hasn't had a regular flush or change. It doesn't smell burnt but it's just a little darker than new fluid. I was told by the guy I bought it from that the torque converter was changed in it not too long ago.
View 11 RepliesMy 1999 F-250 wont start unless I use a squirt of fluid but once started it will run fine could this be my cam sensor or do I have an injector problem.
