Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Bad Valvetrain Noise On Power Steering / P0012 Code

Feb 1, 2012

I'm working on an 05 with a 5.4. I got it with a bad valvetrain noise on the PS, which ended up being a bad cam, and one bad rocker. I changed the bad rocker and any others that showed any wear, the cam, and all 12 lifters on that head.

The truck starts, idles, runs, and drives fine; identical to my own 05. But if I get on it, it has a dead spot around 3-4k rpm, then picks right up again. After a while, I get the p0012 (Variable camshaft timing over-retarded bank 1). After I get it pissed off, the idle gets rough as well and bogs down.

Now I know the cam went it correctly. I used the wedge tool so the phaser never left the timing chain. I marked the chain as well just to be safe, and the phaser only goes on the cam in one position. Also, it idles too nicely, and runs fine under normal acceleration.

Tonight I swapped the VCT solenoids from one side to the other. It took a lot longer to get the code, but finally came up as a freeze frame dtc, and on Bank 1 again, so it's not the solenoid.

So in my mind, all I can think is that the timing chain jumped (which I don't think is likely due to the good running under normal conditions), or the phaser is bad/sticking on Bank 1. I popped off the oil fill tube and the phaser looks fine physically, so I don't think I banged into it somewhere along the line. I also manually excited the Bank 1 solenoid by grounding the purple wire, and it gives my the same rough idle which I get after the p0012.

It looks like the phaser to me. Another mistake I made was not scanning the truck when I first got it. It came right from a repair shop which diagnosed the camshaft, but I would have at least known if they cleared any codes from it.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2006 - Power Steering Grinding Noise?

i have a 2006 F250 XLT 5.4L 4x4 Crew Cab. after months of dealing with an ongoing power steering issue and replacing pumps left and right, i decided to replace the entire power steering system. Ordered Gearbox, Pump and Cooler from dealership. The install went fairly easy, and finished in 2 days.

The truck used to whine and grind as i would turn wheel any direction, driving or in park and the wheel used to pull , like jerk a bit when i would go like in a u-turn.

Not anymore, all those issues are gone. Steers straight , no whining , wheel doesn't pull anymore and all seems fine, EXCEPT when i take a turn , for example onto a driveway where its a bit of an incline. Then, i hear some grinding noise and a bit of vibration in my wheel. I think it comes from gearbox or pump.

Im scared not to drive it too much as all is new components and don't want to ruin all over again.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Grinding Noise While Braking From Engine Bay / Power Steering?

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Power Steering And Brake Make Noise / Slight Humming

I recently had a close encounter with some large rocks on a bad road and broke the power steering cooler. I lost some fluid and pressure as I had no brakes and it steered like a log truck. Replaced the damaged part and added fluid. I was informed by ford technician that air in the lines would make noise but would eventually work itself out. Well the brakes work and steering is getting better but it is noisy with steering and brakes. How long should it take to get the air out? PS the fluid looks foamy now. I should also mention it was making a slight humming noise before the incident with the rock.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Grinding Noise In Steering And Hub

I noticed the front diff of my truck was whining, so it decided to take a look. I noticed that the passenger side hub would not unlock when it was in the lock position. My truck has the manual floor shifted 4x4 and the manual hubs, not the ESOF. I removed the locking hub from the hub bearing assy and I noticed that the axle shaft still moved when i spun the wheel. I know the manual locking hub is trashed (pieces fell out when i removed it from the truck) but does the fact that the axle shaft still spins in the assy with no hub installed also mean that my hub bearing assembly is trashed and warrants replacement?

Finally, the number one most annoying thing with this "new to me" truck, is this noise in the steering column. It is very hard to describe, but when slowly turning the wheel, either left or right, it will produce a groaning/grinding sound that CAN be felt in the steering wheel. There is a roughness/vibrating/binding type feeling in the wheel when this noise is made. I lubricated the boot that goes through the firewall, and the spring around the shaft behind the turn signal switch with silicone spray and the noise goes on. It really feels like it is somewhere in the column, but as I said before I do not know anything about these superdutys. I work for chrysler and I have never experienced anything like this on a dodge truck.

Its not the best but here is a video, little grinding noise that I am speaking of is most noticeable when camera angle changes to the side of the column, just before door buzzer makes noise : Grind steering - YouTube .....

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Moaning Noise From Steering Or Brakes?

Bought my truck in April and it has basically sat in my driveway until I sell one of my other vehicles. I've started it every 2-3 weeks and let it run for about 1/2 hour each time. I've had to charge the batteries once (about 2 months ago) when they were low and wouldn't start the truck.

I've also moved it out of the driveway several times (about 50 feet - moving forward and reversing) when having to make room for other vehicles. I noticed last weekend when I started it up, there was a bit of a whine coming from under the hood ... it wasn't too loud. I didn't move it that time ... just let it warm up ... again for a 1/2 hour.

This morning I went to move it again for a service vehicle. It was cool outside (about 32 degrees). There was a loud moaning and groaning this time every time I moved the steering wheel. I sat on the street idling and the same moaning happened when I touched the brakes and didn't move the steering wheel. The steering also felt stiffer than usual (although I don't have a good feel for "normal" as I haven't really driven this truck except when I brought it home in April covering 1,000 miles ... it had no symptoms or issues then).

I'm hoping it's just from sitting so long without really being driven but I'm feeling that something is binding or perhaps there is a problem with the power steering.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: P0088 Code - No Loss Of Power

So I'm not sure if I bought a lemon, but i picked up a F-350 6.4 Turbo Diesel two days ago and the check engine light came on yesterday. It's giving me a P0088 Code as well as the P0088pd. It's got 131,000 miles on it so no warranty will cover me.

I'm tracking the TSB put out telling the techs to replace the HPFP, but they mention a loss of power. I've only had the truck for two days, but I've driven them for work before and I can't detect any loss of power. Besides the code, everything seems to be running fine.

What can I can try out before running out and changing the HPFP? I'd rather not cut so deep into my savings if I don't have to.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Steering Wheel Jerk And Loud Clunk Noise

I took my truck to an alignment shop to have him look over my truck to find a steering wheel jerk and a loud clunk noise. He believes it's in the transfer case driveline. Said to remove the driveline then drive it around and see if it goes away, if it does then that's the problem. So to the question, how to properly take this out? Do I need to make marks with a paint pen anywhere to line things back up or does it matter?

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Code P1633 - No Power To Keep Alive Memory

2000 F250 4x4 V10... I am getting code P1633, no power to Keep Alive Memory

Here are the symptoms...

First, the voltmeter shows under 10 volts. When this happens, the check engine light comes on and throws code P1633.

Also, I can't shift out of park for some reason when the voltmeter shows under 10 volts.

Also, when I apply the brake, the voltmeter drops completely, no other functions seem to affect it other than applying the brake. I know this is related to the shift interlock which could have something to do with not sensing the brake is applied and won't come out of park.

What I've checked so far:

Battery has good voltage
Alternator is charging
Fuse to PCM shows good voltage
Fuses to voltmeter and shift interlock show good voltage
All grounds I've found are good

The one problem I have found is there is no power to pin 55 to PCM, Keep alive power circuit.

So, I am trying to figure out where the voltmeter gets it's signal from after the fuse box under the dash or where it is grounded, I found the shift interlock ground and it is good.

Would the fact that there is no power to pin 55 cause the voltmeter problem and shift interlock problem? I am tempted to jump power to that pin, but this will not be easy and I don't want to do it if it will just mask the real problem.

Also, when I was first experiencing this problem, the voltmeter would jump around when going over bumps while driving, then it would finally settle under 10 volts. At one time I couldn't drive the truck and kept turning it off then on in hopes it would go back to normal, I applied the parking brake then released it and let it slam up, after that it went back to normal, not sure if the jolt make a connection or what, but I would lean towards a loose connection because of the jumping around of the gauge. Now it's constant though, I messed with a ton of wiring and can't get it to go back to normal. Is there another module that has to do with any of these functions or anything that ties them all together that I am missing?

I am at a loss. I am hoping there are no drive ability issues with this problem, I'll be going on a camping trip in a couple weeks and doubt I'll have it fixed by then. I figured out how to get it out of park bypassing the shift interlock, so that's not a problem.
