Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 6.2L Engine - Whistling Sound When Cold
Jan 27, 2014
I've noticed during the winter my 2012 6.2L engine seems to 'whistle' when it is cold. It also seems to do it intermittently...that is, it always whistles when cold, but it might stop for 30 seconds and then do it again. It does it at idle, and also when driving, just until it warms up.
What is it, and do other people's trucks here do that? I was thinking maybe the engine fan, but why would it cycle on and off for maybe 30 seconds. My other thought was A/C pump.

Have a Whistling or hissing sound while accelerating? My 2015 6.2 seems to make this sound while under load. I took to dealer and they claim its the throttle plates not closing all the way. Claims this is normal, but to me it is annoying. Just would like to know what others think.

I have a 2002 F250 with 189,000 miles. Im having some very bad issues that im trying to fix. The truck idles rough, with fluctuating RPM's. In certain speed reanges it also shakes and runs rough. If I turn the overdrive off the shaking pretty much stops, but it still accelerates pretty slowly. There is also a whistling noise from the front of the truck until the engine warms up, someone told me it sounds like a bad intake manifold? Does that sound right? What could be going on with my truck? All spark plugs and coil packs have been replaced, as well as the fuel injector rails.

I can't seem to get the engine temp to middle range on the marker, but yet my heater blows "to me" hot air. Even while sitting in idle for extended amounts of time I cannot get it to "operating" temperature. I would think if my thermostat was stuck open my heater would blow either cold or slightly warm air. I have the 5.4L engine with knn air filter and no cats.

So, I have this problem that comes back when the temperatures drop below about 20 degrees F. The truck is a 2012 F350 diesel with 15k miles and has done it since it had 3,000 miles on it. When turning in an intersection, or just moving the steering wheel left to right, it makes a clunking sound up in the front steering area and you can feel it a little as well. I have taken it to the dealer and they tightened the body mounts, but that did nothing. Once it warms up, the sound is gone.
This, coupled with the rear end clunking loudly over every bump and pothole when it is cold out, makes this truck a real noisy/annoying vehicle in the winter.
Here is a video of the steering noise, it is louder in person: [URL] ....

Just bought my first Ford. Its a 2015 F250 Platinum. Im at 1400 miles and Im becoming concerned because when I start the truck for the first time in the day, no matter how long I let it sit and warm up I am noticing that on the first couple of miles of driving I hear a high revving sound as I accelerate and it seems to quick shift during those first few miles.
As I continue to drive the high rev sound just fades away and all engine sounds and shifting are as normal as can be and will remain that way until the truck has been sitting for an extended period of time and is cold. I thought it had something to do with tranny temp but this morning I let the tranny warm up to about 115 deg in neutral before taking off but still had the high rev for the first few miles. I have never owned a ford nor have I ever owned a heavy duty truck, hoping this is normal.

I have a 2015 ford f250 xlt crew cab, 6.2, fx4 with about 1200 miles on it. My questions are, I have noticed a hissing or whistling noise while accelerating. I took to dealer and was told it was the throttle plates not closing all the way.I was told they all do this. Normal? Very annoying noise with windows down. Another noise I have been having is the brake pedal makes a popping noise while applying pressure to brakes. Dealer said brake pedal assembly was out of alignment. They said was out of alignment 1/8". After adjustment within a few days popping started again.

I have a 2010 F250 extend cab 4x4. While traveling about 70 down the freeway I get a whistling noise. It is usually worse when the wind is blowing hard or behind a semi. Wind makes the noise louder so I assume the noise is coming from the air hitting something. Slow down to 50 and noise goes away. Do not think it is mechanical because when a gust hits the truck it is worse. Checked all the windows, windshield and rubber parts. Where I should look.

I have a 2000 f250 7.3 and the cruise control works when only when the engine is cold. Once the truck warms up, cruise will shut off and not reactivate. I have no lights on on the dash new clutch safety switch a new sensor on the master cylinder horn works and have had a scanner hooked up and compared the electrical values of the buttons pushed to the spec.

I'm assuming its a valve.
2004 F250 with 5.4L. 128,000 miles. Oil changed every 4K but its my work truck. She works hard for a living towing landscape trailers 98% of the time.
When the engine is first cranked, there is a ticking sound from the right side. Its quite noticeable but only does this until I get going. Once I get to driving, it fades away. If I turn the engine off and let it sit for a little while, when I start it, the ticking is back again. As long as I keep it running, it stays quiet.
If this is a valve or rocker arm, how big of a repair is it? What happens if I don't deal with it until the winter (off-season)?
I've tried Marvel Mystery Oil and now with this oil change, I have Rislone in there. Both have made no difference.

My F450 2010 class C motor home has the V10 engine. In the RPM range of about 2200 - 2300, there is a screeching sound I believe is from the engine area. It does not matter what transmission gear I'm in thus the vehicle speed is not a factor - only happens in that engine RPM range. Seems to happen when slowly accelerating or decelerating through the 2200 - 2300 RPM range or continues to screech if I maintain that RPM. If I drop back or increase RPM out of the range it quits. If I accelerate thru the range a little quicker it doesn't happen. Also does not happen when parked and the engine is sped up.

Why does my engine fan run when truck is cold? I hate it, anoying winding sound. It will run that way for up to ten miles sometimes. My other trucks never did this. This is the 6.2 gas.

Here's a link to a video where you can hear what I'm describing. The noise is most noticeable around the start (first 18 seconds) and the end of the video when I'm closest to the exhaust pipe:
YouTube ....
You may need headphones to hear it, but the engine seems to be making a bit of a puffing sound during idle. It happens completely randomly and I'm not quite sure what could be causing it.
Aside from this noise, the engine seems to idle normally, and the check engine light isn't on. I had all of the injectors out a few weeks ago for cleaning. They all appear to be working fine. I also cleaned the throttle body at that same time and ensured there were no obstructions for the air intake and filter.
What might be causing this sound? 1999 Ford F250 Super Duty 5.4L

I have 2009 F-450 6.4L Diesel with 41K miles and just started to have a noise that can be heard up in the CAB of the truck while driving or idling. It sounds like a dry ball bearing that would go bad in home computer AC power supply or CPU cooling fan. The sound starts when the engine is at full operating temperature and most noticeable and the loudest if you are standing in front of the engine at idle outside.
Checked all fluids and they are normal. Turning the steering wheel doesn't affect the sound either or turning off the AC. Check engine light has not come on. The only thing I have noticed is that clutch fan stays on a very long time after starting cold and takes about a mile or two before it disengages. The truck is only used to tow a 36' 5th wheel and sits the majority of the time.

I have an 2005 F250 4.2tdi XLT. There is a buzzing sound coming from somewhere near the fuel filter area in the engine bay. This started after changing the fuel filter during a service. Its also difficult to start now. It has to swing for 10 secs before the engine fires. What it could be?

I'm having a problem with starting the V10 in my 99 E350 cube van. It refuses to start when cold unless I stick my finger in the idle air control valve and force it shut, or use starting fluid, or a combination of both. Once I do get it started, it will die if I touch the throttle, but once warmed up, it runs fine. I have replaced the IAC, the cylinder head temperature sensor, the fuel filter and fuel pump, and cleaned the MAF. My code reader shows no codes, and like I say once warmed up it will run fine and restart no problem.

So my 2010 has been bulletproof thus far. Now the last few weeks I've been working on a new property and using 4x4 a lot and driving in deep/wet grass.
This noise happens only when cold and only at low rpm. In/out of gear moving stopped doesn't matter. Tried to take it to dealer and it was warmed up by then and not doing it! So ill take em this video and leave the truck there for a couple hours and see if they can duplicate it.
Any guesses what this is? [URL] ..... And why I've been distracted off my truck!
