What is the best way to bleed air from the power steering lines? I just replaced the power steering pump on a 06 6.0 f250 and now I need to bleed the lines and refill the power steering. I'm just curious as to what is the best and easiest way to do this.
View 14 RepliesI bought a 2006 F250 Super Duty about 3 months ago, and it's been doing fine. I backed it into the shed yesterday after work, and noticed a little while later, a small puddle of fluid under the front. I crawled under and looked up...the entire steering pump is wet and dripping. I thought at first it was engine oil coming down from above, but it seems to be steering fluid (or whatever is in the steering reservoir). Clear looking fluid/oil.
I've read about high-pressure hose leaks...exactly where is that hose? Is it the one that is nearly against the pulley on the bottom? Where the fluid could be coming from?
I have been having trouble with my 2002 F250 SD, the steering at low RPM is next to impossible.. If i put it into N I can rev the engine and it gets "easier" but not very. I do not want to replace the pump and find out that it wasn't the problem...

I screwed up on installing my new power steering pump and used power steering fluid (new to ford) and it is moaning so I need to flush and get mercon ATF put back in the lines. The write up I found was for the diesel hydroboost and I do not have that setup.
View 3 RepliesBought a new touchscreen head unit to put in my 06 lariat f250. I have all the controls on my steering wheel for heat and radio and I don't want to lose them with a new radio. This head unit does not have the 3.5mm jack for the axxes unit but has 3 wires labeled swc1 swc2 and swc ground. It supposedly has the converter built in. any views on using a headunit with these wires?

View 2 Repliesi have a 2006 F250 XLT 5.4L 4x4 Crew Cab. after months of dealing with an ongoing power steering issue and replacing pumps left and right, i decided to replace the entire power steering system. Ordered Gearbox, Pump and Cooler from dealership. The install went fairly easy, and finished in 2 days.
The truck used to whine and grind as i would turn wheel any direction, driving or in park and the wheel used to pull , like jerk a bit when i would go like in a u-turn.
Not anymore, all those issues are gone. Steers straight , no whining , wheel doesn't pull anymore and all seems fine, EXCEPT when i take a turn , for example onto a driveway where its a bit of an incline. Then, i hear some grinding noise and a bit of vibration in my wheel. I think it comes from gearbox or pump.
Im scared not to drive it too much as all is new components and don't want to ruin all over again.
OK so my 2001 F250 was leaking power steering fluid from the lower portion of the gearbox (where the pitman arm attaches).
I found a thread on this forum where it showed how you could change the seals out WITHOUT taking the gearbox out.
So I got the pitman arm off with a heavy duty puller. Then I scraped out the 1st rubber seal hoping to reveal a snap ring behind it. Well, the seal is 99% scraped off, but there is not evidence of a snap ring. It does seem like there is some metallic ring holding another rubber seal in behind it. But again, I can't find the little open spots that you put your snap ring pliers in to get snap rings out.
How do I get this metallic thingy out???? I already broke a small drill bit trying to drill it out. It just doesn't seem like the best way to go about it.
I have a 2006 F250 Super, CrewCab 4 dr, 6.0 w/60K. Last month I tried the rear power window and .......nothing.
It tried to open 1/2 inch and then stopped, had to try to power it closed and it moved 1/4 inch and I pushed it the rest. Removed the rear cover behind the seats and I can see the motor and wires attempting to move but it does not move and I am afraid to burn the motor out or push too hard and break a cable or worse.
The track looks really dirty, I use that window maybe once every 2 months.
1. Can I replace the motor myself?
2. Can I put something in the track to clean/lubricate?
3. Should I try to open the window under power and some additional manual pushing?
2006 F250 and my passenger light was out. I thought it was a bad bulb and I wanted to upgrade anyway so I bought some Slyvania Ultra headlights. Pulled out the old bulb and it didn't appear to be broken, but I installed the new upgraded lights anyway. Still not coming on. I tried the hi beams and still nothing. Got an electrical probe to test the wires and still no juice. Where the wires run to so I can try to find the break in the line? I'm assuming there is not a seperate fuse for the passenger side...On a side note when I went hunting a few weeks ago I had some kind of animal make a nest under the hood, its possible a mouse/rat/squirrel ate my headlight wire, but the nest was in the top center of the engine by the turbo and oil filter.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2006 F250 XLT 6.0 diesel. I bought last month to haul my fifth wheel. Looking for the wiring diagram for the "under hood lamp". I have no power at the connector of the under hood lamp. I have checked all the fuses in both locations (battery box and central junction box) and did not find a blown fuse. The under hood lamp is not listed on the the central junction box fuse and relay posting in the owner manual. Is it controlled by something else?

oil change with the right oil
ran it with sea foam in the crankcase before oil change
new fuel pump module
new evap vent control
new abs speed sensor
I cleaned throttle body with brake cleaner ... Scanned it after a 15 min ride of having to use 2 feet to drive it. The engine codes that came up are p0022 iacv short to ground and p1000 readiness test not complete. I also got p1804 4 wheel drive high indicator circuit failure p1808 4 wheel drive low indicator circuit failure .... Not sure what else to try.
On my way home today I heard wind coming in around my drivers side power window. Its not seating itself straight in the weather stripping. The window is tilted toward the front of the truck. Do I need a new regulator? Or maybe re- epoxy glass to bracket? The window still operates, its just crooked. Also I haven't had those door panels off before..

View 2 RepliesI just purchased a 99 F250 Superduty 4x4. Very low mileage (63000). Everything on this truck is great except the steering. I flat towed a 73 VW Bug about 100 miles and it was the most white knuckle drive of my life. Couldn't take both hands off the wheel without the whole truck starting to wander all over the road.
Before I take it in to have the alignment checked and get told that every single part under the front of the truck needs to be replaced, I'm wondering if this is a "common" problem with this truck that others have encountered. One person has already told me to just replace the front hub assemblies, the tie rods, and the steering gear box and all will be well.
I'm hoping all those parts don't actually need to be replaced - especially since there are only 63K miles on the truck. Tie rods seem solid with no play. Not sure about steering gear or unit bearings.
I have an 06 F-250 5.4 gas w/138k. It had recently had a lot of play on the wheel (15 degrees maybe) and last week I made the move to replace the gearbox with a redhead box. All seemed to go ok, but now the steering is stiff and it won't come all the way back to center after a turn. It turns smoothly and completely with no binding, but it has to be moved the last 1/3 turn back to center.
I flushed the fluid initially with Valvoline max life fully syn. Then second guessed myself after the problem started happening so I switched it back to regular Mercon. No improvement.
I had it on stands today and it was extremely difficult for me to turn my tires left to right manually (at the wheel). The only other thing I did was adjust the sleeve on the drag link to straighten out the steering wheel.
Should I be able to turn the tires left and right from the wheel easily? Every now and then I hear a whine from the pump which I never had before, but 99% of the time it seems fine and is quiet. it just feels like something is over tight but everything should be to spec.
I have a 01 f250, owned it for about 8 months now. Have done a ton of work to it, replacing all worn out parts. It's a v10, replaced so far is ball joints, all tie rods, steering dampener, front sway bar links and bushings and Monroe gas Magnum shocks all around. My biggest problem is the wandering in steering. I put a 2.5" add leaf spring pack to front when I first bought it. It has stock bullet whole wheels and new Firestone's destination a/ts. Also. Tires have been rebalanced and are smooth until I get to 60+mph, its a swirling ride after 60mph. Could I have bad wheel hubs or do I have an alignment issue? Planning to replace hubs with Napa hubs since I did everything else and I'm sure there bad with 236k miles on truck.

View 14 RepliesI have a few F-250's that have been having steering problems. and they all have the same symptoms.
When taking a long slow curve, the steering wheel will jump back like 6 inches, as if the pressure is going out. like say you had the vehicle turned to about 10 oclock, the wheel would go back and forth between 10 and 11. However, you do not loose much of your turning. It just has more pressure against your hand as if the power steering goes out.
You can also do it a standing stop. Only when you turn your wheel like say to 9, you can just use a finger to hold it there and it will bounce up and down? I have asked the local Dealership, and their answer was "there is something wrong with the power steering." couldn't get much more vague than that I guess.
I have looked for leaks, none. Checked struts, not bent. Checked tires, all brand new and balanced. Checked steering wheel mounts, all good to go... ???? Just lost...
My 2001 F250 2WD does not have the steering damper that my 2004 F250 2WD has. Is that normal or is my 2001 missing it?
