I have been having trouble with my 2002 F250 SD, the steering at low RPM is next to impossible.. If i put it into N I can rev the engine and it gets "easier" but not very. I do not want to replace the pump and find out that it wasn't the problem...
View 9 RepliesI have a 2001 F250 SD V10 and when at a dead stop and with the brakes applied, steering becomes very stiff and almost impossible to turn the wheels. If I let off of the brakes and move a little the steering is just fine. I hate like hell to spend the money on a new power steering pump if it isn't going to fix the problem. Simply put, deap stop, brakes on, wheels don't want to steer. How do I fix it?
View 10 RepliesMy 2002 250 just got ball joints, bushings, sway arms, 4 wheel alignment and new tires to top it all off. Did All this to correct the shakes, shimmies, popping and grinding in the front end. Now they say I need a steering stabilizer up front. Does any other than ford make a bolt on one and haw much and where can I get one.
View 10 RepliesI have a 2002 F250 diesel, the key will turn to acc. but not on. It feels like it is hitting something in the column. I tried moving the shifting lever back and forth with my foot on the break, as I turned the key but it would not turn. I am thinking the tumblers are OK because it goes into acc. It feels like their is some lever that is not releasing the shift lever, because if I turn the key hard the shift lever jumps. What is wrong, or how the interface between the lock tumbler and the shift lever works?
View 4 RepliesI have put a new steering pump on my 2002 f250 and all new hydraulic hoses. I plan to install a steering pump filter on the system to protect it from anything that is not steering pump fluid.
There are two intake ports to the steering pump. One is near the bottom of the pump and takes fluid from the steering pump cooler after it has left the steering gear. The other intake port is near the top of the pump and takes fluid from the booster.
My question is - which hose would be better to put a steering pump filter on? Is there anything wrong with putting a filter on both? I imagine the first intake hose is constantly circulating fluid and the other only circulates it when the steering wheel is used.
After 240,000 miles I had to get the ball joints on my 02 f250 2 wheel drive replaced and the alignment set. I notice that the steering is really tight. In fact that it will not attempt to return to center on the highway. The guy that did the work has 30 years experience doing this sort of thing and he says I just need to drive it and it will loosen up. Interested in hearing from others that have replaced ball joints; Is this normal? How long do they take to loosen up?
View 7 RepliesI have a 02 F250 4x4 5.4. As I drive and when pulling into a driveway I hear a clunk that can be felt in the floor and the steering wheel. I've replaced the wheel bearings and seals, shocks, ball joints, sway bar links and bushings, tie rod ends at the gear box and "right hand inner". The other two tie rods are tight and so is the track bar. I cannot duplicate the sound if I jack it up and move parts around with a pry bar. I can however move the steer box sector shaft upwards about an 1/8. I've adjusted the screw but it didn't do anything. Could it be the steer box or the springs? I've even mounted a GoPro underneath but everything moves and I can't tell why it is.

I screwed up on installing my new power steering pump and used power steering fluid (new to ford) and it is moaning so I need to flush and get mercon ATF put back in the lines. The write up I found was for the diesel hydroboost and I do not have that setup.
View 3 RepliesMy 02 F350 steering lost all resistance. I can almost spin the steering wheel to each stop. What would cause that? Recent front brake rotor/caliper/pad replacement is the only thing the truck has had done since I've owned it. (2 months now). It's way too loose to be safe.

View 2 Replieshere's the problem. The driver side front power window will only go down and not up. I checked the motor and the master switch with a multimeter and both work just fine. the motor is receiving power and the master switch is sending power. However when i plug the motor back in and re-install it, the window will not go up. Is there some sort of relay that might have gone bad that is not letting the motor raise the window up???
View 5 RepliesOK so my 2001 F250 was leaking power steering fluid from the lower portion of the gearbox (where the pitman arm attaches).
I found a thread on this forum where it showed how you could change the seals out WITHOUT taking the gearbox out.
So I got the pitman arm off with a heavy duty puller. Then I scraped out the 1st rubber seal hoping to reveal a snap ring behind it. Well, the seal is 99% scraped off, but there is not evidence of a snap ring. It does seem like there is some metallic ring holding another rubber seal in behind it. But again, I can't find the little open spots that you put your snap ring pliers in to get snap rings out.
How do I get this metallic thingy out???? I already broke a small drill bit trying to drill it out. It just doesn't seem like the best way to go about it.

View 2 RepliesI just purchased a 99 F250 Superduty 4x4. Very low mileage (63000). Everything on this truck is great except the steering. I flat towed a 73 VW Bug about 100 miles and it was the most white knuckle drive of my life. Couldn't take both hands off the wheel without the whole truck starting to wander all over the road.
Before I take it in to have the alignment checked and get told that every single part under the front of the truck needs to be replaced, I'm wondering if this is a "common" problem with this truck that others have encountered. One person has already told me to just replace the front hub assemblies, the tie rods, and the steering gear box and all will be well.
I'm hoping all those parts don't actually need to be replaced - especially since there are only 63K miles on the truck. Tie rods seem solid with no play. Not sure about steering gear or unit bearings.
I have a 2002 f250 4.2 diesel with a 5 speed manual box and i want to put a 7.3 in it. Does it fit?and can i make the 5 speed tranny fit?
View 4 RepliesI have a 01 f250, owned it for about 8 months now. Have done a ton of work to it, replacing all worn out parts. It's a v10, replaced so far is ball joints, all tie rods, steering dampener, front sway bar links and bushings and Monroe gas Magnum shocks all around. My biggest problem is the wandering in steering. I put a 2.5" add leaf spring pack to front when I first bought it. It has stock bullet whole wheels and new Firestone's destination a/ts. Also. Tires have been rebalanced and are smooth until I get to 60+mph, its a swirling ride after 60mph. Could I have bad wheel hubs or do I have an alignment issue? Planning to replace hubs with Napa hubs since I did everything else and I'm sure there bad with 236k miles on truck.

View 14 RepliesI have a few F-250's that have been having steering problems. and they all have the same symptoms.
When taking a long slow curve, the steering wheel will jump back like 6 inches, as if the pressure is going out. like say you had the vehicle turned to about 10 oclock, the wheel would go back and forth between 10 and 11. However, you do not loose much of your turning. It just has more pressure against your hand as if the power steering goes out.
You can also do it a standing stop. Only when you turn your wheel like say to 9, you can just use a finger to hold it there and it will bounce up and down? I have asked the local Dealership, and their answer was "there is something wrong with the power steering." couldn't get much more vague than that I guess.
I have looked for leaks, none. Checked struts, not bent. Checked tires, all brand new and balanced. Checked steering wheel mounts, all good to go... ???? Just lost...

View 1 Replies05 F250 4x4 6.0... Lately, I have noticed a little stiffness in my steering. Mainly when I turn left - it just feels like the truck doesn't want to come back to center like it should...almost like a tire is low on air (they're not - I checked) or a tire has laid over.
I have checked power steering fluid and looked at all bushings underneath. Any chance that the steering stabilizer could be causing this issue? Also...do these trucks not have any grease fittings in the front end? I have looked twice and still haven't found any (in my defense, I haven't had the truck very long)...
