While driving my 2001 F350 7.3 today running errands it started to have a real concerning issue. Once I slowed down back into my neighborhood it would make a thud, then feel like someone was pushing the brakes (even when i gave it gas). Then it would thud again and drive normal. I'm worried its the transmission getting ready to go. Any input?
View 14 RepliesWe were using my 2001 7.3 4x4 (automatic, manual lock outs) in 4 low yesterday on dry pavement in an attempt to pull out the remainder of a 6x6 post in concrete. We were working her pretty hard alternating directions of pulling. At one point we heard a loud bang (see also: thud; pop; etc). It seemed at that point that the front axle was no longer functioning in 4wd. We still had the low gearing feel, but at one point I noticed my rear tires trying to slip on the driveway, but fronts didn't appear to be pulling anymore.
Long story short, came in, went to bed, went out this morning and thought I'd jack up the front end and roll the tires in both 'free' and 'lock' to see if the universal joints (yokes?) behind each wheel were spinning or not, depending on whether free or locked in. I noticed on the passenger side a few drops of a clear/light colored fluid that had dripped from behind the dust cover that isn't functioning any longer. The joints worked as they should, based on if it was locked in or not.
I decided to go ahead and put the back axle on jackstands as well and see how it was working when "driving". When in 2wd, rear worked, front was stationary, as it should be. when in 4high, rear spun, front driver spun erratically, nothing from passenger front (where I had seen drip). 4low was same thing - erratic on driver side, at best.
So I know I have front axle/transfer case issues. The question is, with the drip (smells like grease, so I'm assuming its gear oil?) would I be safe to drive it a few days with hubs in free position? I don't want all of the fluid leaking out when I'm driving down the road. I use the truck for work and wouldn't be able to be without it until later in the week or next week. But I also don't want to drive it if it will just make my predicament worse.
I have a 2008 f-350 diesel, with 33k miles, I am getting a light thump or thud from the passenger side in the engine compartment, It does it when the truck is NOT moving as well as when it is moving. It use to do it only periodically but now it is doing it about every 1-2 minutes and it happened 3 times while we were sitting at a stop light.

View 19 RepliesSo I was turning into my neighborhood tonite, when I got a really loud thud and a major hesitation in the engine. Fortunately I was in my neighborhood and could basically coast to my house.
No CEL came on and I don't seem to have any leakage (only thing dripping underneath was condensation from a/c I believe). Obviously too late for service tonite, so have tow scheduled for 7am. What could have happened? The no CEL has me confused. I was able to restart it and it seems to idle fine, but give it has and it hesitates.
When gearing down from fourth to third (especially down hill) there is sometimes a loud thud, it seems as though the transmission fluid is low, a dealership however has told me that the phaeton has a sealed gearbox and cannot be serviced by them?
View 21 RepliesBeen driving my 2001 f250 7.3 4x4 with no problems then started noticing it lacking power so I changed fuel filter and air filter. After a week goes by I was at work and I was leaving to come home so I started truck to let warm up and it cranked longer than normal but started. Let run about 10 minutes idle nicely when I punched it it bogged down and had no power never died. I idled over into parking lot and power came so I took off again loss all power again, still never died. Got it right back to my work sat there a bit and tried again this time I took it easy and was able to get my truck home 30 so miles.
When I got home I ran codes p1211 came up for the icp sensor I changed it did not change anything still had same problem. This was a Saturday afternoon to evening issue. So sunday I played around with it just checking out info online and test driving it seem to run ok but still lacking power. Let it sit till Monday I went out to start it had to cycle key 3 time before it started idle nicely then died would not restart changed ipr valve nothing changed cam sensor nothing changed some how 10 quarts low in oil just changed dec. 30th don't know ? Now will start if I pump throttle and has all its power back?
Upshifting is fine, downshifting gives me a big thud. Bigger from 3rd-2nd smaller 2nd-1st (I think).
2006 GS430. 120k or so miles.
Dealership replaced solenoid #2, but now say I need a whole new transmission.
My 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe as reached 40 MPH. While driving, after slowing down then giving the car gas, it would make a very loud thud and I would be jolted forward. At times it sounded like the transmission was going to be left on the roadway. Is it common problem?
View 2 RepliesMy son has a 2002 Honda Civic, 4 cyl, manual trans, front wheel drive, 110K mi. There is a random extremely loud thud-like noise coming from under the hood that sounds like someone hitting the car with a sledge hammer and can be felt in the steering wheel and in the gear shift knob. The thudding happens occasionally when first starting up the car but mostly starts happening after driving it after 10 minutes or so. The thudding occurs both while driving and when stopped (at stop lights for example.) The thudding doesn't increase in frequency with an increase in speed. The noise is so loud that it sounds like everything under the hood will fall out. On rare occasions it can be driven for 30 minutes or so around town without making any noise, most times however it will eventually start making noise. I've replaced the struts which were leaking but the noise still occurs. What could be the problem?
View 1 RepliesI have a 2001 F350 7.3 4WD that does not want to shift into drive. When you shift to drive you can feel a slight difference in the trans but it will not move, it will rev freely but not move. If I shift it up and down it will engage after a lag period ranging from 10-15 seconds up to several minutes. Reverse is ok and after forward engages it appears to work as it should, shifts ok through the gears. I don't have much experience working on automatics.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2015 Sonata Sport 2.0T with less than 7k miles on it. I commute about 14 miles to work. During this drive, I hear a clunk/thud in the undercarriage that occurs usually 2 or 3 times each drive. It sounds like it might be coming from the wheel well. Originally I thought my tires were picking up rocks on the road and throwing them up into the wheel well. If any of you are familiar with the sound of dried mud releasing from a tire or the wheel well while driving a truck, this sound is very similar. It might just be me, but I feel like it is occurring while turning the wheel/straightening it out after a turn. Today it happened while changing lanes twice, and once taking a right hand turn semi-quickly at a green light. I know that I am not running anything over that is visible while driving.
View 4 RepliesI drive a 2004 Hyundai Elantra with 72,000 miles on it. For the last few weeks, I've been hearing loud thud sounds on the passenger side when the car is cold or fairly cold. It almost sounds like someone is throwing tennis balls at the passenger side door while I'm driving. It happens when I'm stopped or when I'm driving - either way. Today, the Check Engine light went on; I don't know if it's related.
View 2 RepliesI took my 2005 V6 'Reg into the dealership for service. It has about 6700 miles. The problem is it sounds like the amp is 'clipping', which means there is a loud electric 'thud' sound when I lock/unlock the doors. While there I asked the service advisor to do all applicable TSBs and informed her that sometimes the CD player won't eject the CD. Lastly, I advised them that the wipers made a really loud sound when they wipe.
Well, this dealership does not have loaner cars available. They have outsourced them to Enterprise Rent-A-Car. The dealership will pay $30 per day and I am responsible for the taxes, which are 15% of the $30 per day. Is this fair? I don't think I should be responsible for paying taxes for a rental car (a Mitsu Lancer or VW Jetta were my two choices, no less).
Have a 2001 f350 that runs great until you hook a trailer to it. Once a trailer is hooked to it and you are on a slight incline (and I mean slight) it will not go into D.. It's like it gets stuck in N.. Have to jam it into 1 to get it to go.. Once level again it will go back to D... Truck has 177k miles on it.
View 14 Replies2012 SE with 4 cylinder 35K miles. When the front wheels go over a speed bump at a couple of miles per hour I get a noise which sounds like something hitting the floor board of the car. It is a loud single thud. Much deeper and louder than a loose seat would make.
View 7 RepliesSo this phenomenon only happens when I try to rapidly open my throttle but what happens is that I feel a huge bucking in the rear while I'm accelerating.
This bucking makes a loud thud noise and I was wondering if this is normal considering the circumstances under which this occurs.
If I can guess what's happening I think my engine doesn't have enough air and when I rapidly push down the accelerator I'm trying to force in air and fuel and the result is a rapid combustion which causes the bucking effect that I'm experiencing.
Have an f350 4x4 diesel that when I drive slow and especially turn to the right it makes a grinding noise. It seems to either go away or just gets muffled by road noise when cruising. The ball joints were bad so I replaced them and I figured with this especially when I turn right it had to be a wheel bearing so I replaced both of them and still same thing. Don't want to throw money at it hoping to fix the issue. Also front duff is full of oil.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2010 6.4L turbo diesel. Without a trailer on a mtn incline I have no issues. She will fly up the hill and she is quiet when I'm not pulling the 10,000 Lb trailer. When pulling the trailer, I have a loud howling noise and reduced performance. I had it at the Dealership and I had them check the engine/turbo and they found no problems? I asked if they tested under load and they said yes?? Someone suggested that the "Waste gate valve" was defective.

View 3 Replies05 Santa Fe GLS 2.7L, auto, 2WD, 161K miles. Just bought it a couple weeks ago. Not much info about repair history, other than it appears to be well maintained inside and out.
Engine makes two kinds of noise - rattly top end noise and a low frequency thud-thud-thud.

Apart from the noises, the engine starts and runs flawlessly, seems to have plenty of power (for a 2.7L, ha), and cruises at freeway speeds no problem. No tailpipe smoke or steam, whether cold or hot. Have searched the forums for this but nothing matches exactly.
I don't drive it much because I work from home, basically just around the corner to the grocery store and back. Haven't pulled the valve or timing covers yet, waiting to hear from all you Hyundai experts out there. Top end noise is one thing, but the thud really has me concerned.
Top end noise sounds like lifters not injectors - but I'm not sure I can really tell the difference, there's a lot of "sewing machine noise" going on. On cold start, it's not very noticeable, but becomes more pronounced as the the engine warms up. At operating temp it settles into a consistent rattle at idle. Seems to diminish slightly with higher RPMs, which also suggests worn/sticky lifters.
Oil looks clean and fresh. Haven't tried the Hyundai oil filter, but IMO this level of noise is well beyond the simple lifter ticking that others in the forums have described and reported cured by using the OEM filter.
I used the "long screwdriver with handle in my ear" trick to listen at various points on the heads and valve covers. At idle, it sounds like 2 or 3 lifters on the front bank that are making most of the noise, but maybe a couple on the rear bank as well, hard to get the screwdriver tip back there. Is there a particular spot where lifters can be heard best, distinct from everything else?
The low frequency thud-thud-thud is most audible when letting the throttle close after opening it up to about 2000 rpm. It can also be strongly felt through the throttle mechanism when operating it by hand. Still audible at higher RPMs, but not nearly as distinct, more of a subdued throbbing. Noise is coming from around the rear bank, about half way down the firewall. I fear it is number 3 rod, but is there anything else that would make this sound? I don't think it's a motor mount because there's no noise when putting it into gear, driving, or shifting. How can I tell for sure whether it's a rod? If it is a rod, can it be replaced without pulling the motor?
