MY 2001 Edge 4.0 5 speed auto has a noise while accelerating. It happens only when truck is first run and disappears after warming up after a few miles. It just turned 1500 miles. Can't figure out if it is from trans or possibly a speedo cable. It goes to the dealer next week.
View 6 Replies2001 Ranger Edge 3.0. Like the title says, when I start my ranger it idles really rough. If I give it gas it shudders like it's gonna die. After about 2-3 minutes it smooths out. If I'm on the interstate and down shift to pass someone, while accelerating it feels like I have a misfire (no CEL given) not all the time though. I've changed plugs and wires and it stopped doing it so I thought I had it but, it continued a few days later. Then I changed the fuel filter and it stopped again for a few days. Well it's back again. I'm thinking it's the fuel pump but I wanted to check here before I take my truck bed off. I also checked for vac leaks and I'm all good there.

drive truck home, flush trans and cooler, road test all ok. this was 3 weeks ago.
This morning did it to here again, no drive and no reverse, she drove it home using manual low and 2nd.
I get in and when put into drive it feels like it tries but doesn't go all in, same with reverse. pulled it into low and vola I now have drive and reverse again
I'm thinking a we may have a bad or going bad shift solenoid. What I need to know is, is any of the solenoid valves on when in reverse are they the same as when in drive?
I have a 2001 ranger 2wd with a 2.3. It has a miss when acceleration. There is no check engine light. I have changed: fuel filter. Plugs, wires, crank position. Sensor, cleaned mass air flow sensor. Ran 2 bottles of injector cleaner in it. Still missing???? It runs and idles great. Just has a miss in the lower RPM's 1000-2000 then goes away. I really don't wanna take it to a shop. What do you all think??
View 11 RepliesOne month ago. I am at a store and it won't start. Turns over for a second but wont fire up. Waited a while and it finally did. Took to auto parts place and we went over all that it might be. I checked the button on the passenger side and it was down as it should be. I replaced fuel fuse 48 in the box under hood. All was well for a week
3 weeks ago again wont start but this time it will turn over and over and over. Waited again and it cranked. Went back to auto place dude said maybe the ground to the computer. So I put a neg ground on it to the frame. Worked for a few days.
1 week ago Again cranks but wont fire. I take it to the ford house expecting expensive sex. They kept it for 2 days and it cranked all the time. They told me it had to not start so they could get a code. Check engine light has never come on. Even when it wont crank. I got truck and went to eat. And yes then it wont crank. Waited and had another marg and it finally cranked but you could smell gas like it was flooded. Took it home.
Today I took it down to auto place and tested fuel pressure. 60 psi no problems. grrrrrrr well maybe it ain't fuel pump. I have to have a truck I can rely on. I have football playoffs coming up and I travel a lot. It has a brand new interstate battery. I put Lucas gas treatment in tank. Dude at auto place said it would clear fuel line and lube fuel pump? It was 10 bucks for big bottle so I figured it couldn't hurt.
If its 10 at night and I am at a game shooting THEN Im sure it wont start.
My Ranger has 296,000 miles on it. Most everything has been replaced except the u-joints. It's a 2wd 2.5L with an automatic. The motor was replaced at 228,000 with a used motor with 52,000 miles. The transmission has about 60,000 miles on it. All the bearings in the rear end were replaced about 20,000 miles ago. It has the most annoying whistling noise coming from the rear only sometimes. I don't know if it's the brakes being misadjusted or a bearing with a burr in it. It happens at random times but it's such a high pitched whistling you know everyone on the road can hear it too. There is also a driveline vibration, very minor though when over 60. However, I've had the drums checked and even had the wheels balanced many times. My friend said the ujoint grease could be dried up, but the whistling noise only happens at random, the virbation is anytime you're at highway speeds. It's not a violent vibration just enough to tell that it's not a brand new truck anymore. What it could be?
View 2 RepliesI have a 2002 4.0 with the 5R55E transmission. My problem is while driving. It seems to have developed in the last few weeks.
The truck has a whirring noise, which changes as it shifts, which leads me to believe its tranny related. The noise isn't like a grinding.
Most noticeable when it downshifts from 2-1, but I've heard it when accelerating too.
I've investigated u-joints, and they are tight. My tranny fluid is not a dark red, and doesn't smell terrible. No shifting issues, except for the infamous 1-2 pause.
I will be doing a test on jack stands this weekend to listen outside the truck.
Yesterday I was driving around some back roads and I started to hear a ticking when I accelerated when I left my foot off the gas pedal it went away. But when i put my foot on the gas again it comes back. You really cant realize it when you have the radio on... Ive been experiencing rough idling when I come to fast stops and quickly speed up again.
The ticking seems to only happen after like 20 minutes of driving. Most of my trips are only 10 minutes, to either school or to work so it really doesn't happen very often... Although college will start in a few months (30 minute drive) so I wanna get this fixed before something major happen.
Also on a side note, when going up hills it feels like it has delayed shifting. I really don't want to put in anymore money into this truck...already put $ into it the first year of owning it. I guess the good thing is that I got it keeping my fingers crossed nothing is wrong with the transmission or motor, what is wrong?

When I make a left turn I have a horrible grinding noise. Only when I turn left and at any speed.
View 2 RepliesI have an 01 Ranger 4x4 that recently started to make a loud speed dependent noise from the drivers side front wheel, a quick jab to the right on the steering wheel and it stops, straiten out and it comes back...since I know my shocks are worn and have some cupping on the front tires my first thought was tire noise so I moved the back tire which is evenly worn to the front and no change, next I removed the tire and checked everything visually.
All seems ok, the brake does not seem to be dragging and there is no evidence of a cv problem, everything seems tight, so I'm guessing the problem is a bad wheel bearing? If I grab the tire at 12 and 6 there seems to be excessive movement from top to bottom, there should be none right? If memory serves any movement is indicative of bad wheel bearings? I guess I'm looking for some vindication before getting a new hub?
Odd thing on the 97' Ranger that showed up today. I was backing out of the spot at the local Shell station, (on an incline) and the pedal went to the floor. Never happened before. I pumped the brakes a few times, and they came back. On down the street, slowing for the stop sign, pedal went to the floor again.
Not throwing codes, fluid levels are good, only seems to happen at lower speeds/idle. Sometimes pumping brings the brakes back, sometimes they come back all of a sudden.
I can hear a "sucking" kind of noise coming from where the pedal connects to the booster, up under the dash. I looked at it, and nothing *appears* to be broken.
It almost feels like the pads are against the discs, and the pistons/calipers have to reach for them before the brakes apply. (If that makes any sense)
There should be about 50% of life left on the pads, but i haven't pulled the fronts wheels yet to look.
i have a 2001 ranger 4x4 the problem is sometimes it will switch into 4 wheel drive and sometimes it wont just hear clicking noise ,i'm preety sure it doenst have a vaccum.

View 3 RepliesI've been through this same scenario quite a few times before but I cannot narrow it down to the exact problem. I've got this 1998 Ranger that's maintained well, tune-ups, oil changes, and everything else maintenance wise. The past few months randomly driving anywhere from 200-300 miles every once and awhile it would hesitate taking off from a stop or accelerating after letting off the gas. It would throw up a P0171 code so I thought the fuel pump was bad. So I replaced with a new fuel pump assembly. That worked, fuel pressure is now within specs. 65-69psi. Still every 200-300 miles it would throw up a P0171 code, then a few weeks ago it kept coming up more frequently.
I found out it was a broken vacuum hose from the purge valve to the intake manifold tube so I replaced it. Now it doesn't come on anymore. But before I noticed that hose I assumed the mass air flow sensor was bad so I cleaned it with CRC Mass Air Flow cleaner. Since that time it's gotten worse and now stumbles and hesitates every time you stop and takeoff. Sometimes it even chokes the motor out with the a/c on and you come to a stop. I knew the ignition coil also causes the same issues so I checked them. The front coil pack had a burned electrode leading to number 4 cylinder intake side. I replaced the coil cleaned that end of the wire and it still is stumbling and hesitating. I tried the trick of unplugging the mass air flow sensor and driving to see if it was better. No change at all.
After I replaced the coil a few minutes ago I test drove it and stopped and then turned a corner and gave it full throttle with a/c on and it actually shut off. But still there is no check engine light and no codes present. What's going on? I looked at the back coil and didn't see any corroded terminals. It started happening all the time upon takeoff right after I cleaned the mass air flow. But when I unplugged the sensor and drove it around nothing changed at all. Is there something else to check? I had the timing belt changed last week and had the shop check to see if timing is good and they said it was right on. It still drive good you just have to tap the gas twice when you take off to overcome the stumbling.
Looking for a good write to change the front rotor (BIG CRACKS IN IT) on a 97 auto locking 4X4 hubs? Any special tools etc...?
View 7 RepliesThis interference correlates directly to tire rotation speed, engine rpm has no effect. Under about 5mph it won't make the noise, but over that you hear a pop more or less for every rotation of the tire and when you hit say 50mph it is just a steady static noise on AM only. Haven't pulled the head unit yet, checked several body grounds under the hood and all are good. Don't know if a damaged wheel sensor could cause an issue or not.
View 4 RepliesI have a 1987 Ranger 2wd, 2.9, 5sp that feels like it is cutting out when accelerating. The only code in the computer (KOEO) is 67, which according to the manual is neutral drive switch (NDS) circuit open. What to look for? Can the neutral drive switch be the problem?
View 14 RepliesI'm working on a truck for a friend's mother and all of the tests that I've done point to the fuel pump. However, to make sure the pump is getting voltage past the large connector block under the cab, I would like to do a pin-out test before I pull the tank (or the bed). The pump will not run/prime in KOEO test, the relay is good, as are all of the fuses and the inertia switch.
Looking for a wiring diagram handy for this purpose? I've look all over this forum and searched quite extensively and I haven't found one for this year. Since it isn't my truck, I don't feel like purchasing a manual. I'm working on a 2003 3.0 2WD Auto.
If a wiring diagram isn't available, what colors are the wires going to the fuel pump? That way I can at least test the ground and the positive.
first off my truck is 2001 ford ranger 4x4 with an auto. transmission. when I'm driving around in 2wd, everything is fine...
when my 4wd high is on, and I'm starting from a deadstop my truck makes a weird "clunking" noise in the front end. If I'm stuck in mud or snow, and I give gas it keeps "clunking". where the problem comes from?
I have a 2002 ford ranger with the 2.3l and 5 speed.
Long story short, previous owner adjusted the time because he accidentally got the motor out of time (he thought it had the belt, not the chain). So he had to take the intake, fuel rails, fan, throttle body, etc. Off to get to the valve cover to re-time it with the timing kit. After it was put back together, it ran awful. I bought it, checked the time with the timing light and it was good. I replaced the spark plugs, and then realized he had forgotten to plug the camshaft positioning sensor back in. So I did, and that did the trick. From start to finish, the truck had those issues for about a year before I got it so it sat up for a little while. I have had it for 2 weeks now.
Now the problem...it idled great. But when I took it out for the test run, 1st gear shifted great, but at about 1700-2000 rpm (depending on the gear), it would almost seem to loose power, and then it would pick back up around 2400-2700 rpm like nothing had happened. You can sort of tell in 2Nd gear, but it is very noticeable in 3rd, 4th, and 5th. If i accelerate pretty slow, it doesn't happen. It only if i try to accelerate at a normal rate or if i am trying to get onto the interstate or pass someone. I ran some seafoam in it thinking maybe it just got gunked up from sitting for so long, but that only through an engine code saying my bank 3 was misfiring.
So I replaced the spark plugs (again), wires, and then the coil pack (the coil pack is what fixed it) and that got the code to go away and for it to stop missing, but the problem still was the same. It would take off great, and then it would seem to almost pause, and then pick power back up again. It wasnt feeling like it isn't getting enough fuel, it just wouldn't hardly pick up speed. It almost feels like I am riding a 2 stroke dirt bike. The power band is ehat should be normal on the truck, and before I hit the power band is how it feels when the truck has its little pausing episode. It's that noticeable to me.
So I thought maybe the fuel filter or sensors need cleaned/replaced..so yesterday I replaced the fuel filter and cleaned every sensor around the top of the engine, including the MAF sensor and made sure all bolts were tight and gaskets were good. I don't see and disconnected vacuum lines and none of them looked dry rotted. The only place air can get in that I see is the air filter box. The screws that hold the top half of the (stock) filter box are missing, so it is not sealed.
But what to check next. My only other thoughts are the catalytic converter (which it doesn't act like it's stopped up) or the fuel pump pressure being off. Also, it does sound like a lifter ticking in the motor, but previous owner said he thinks it did that before all these problems.
Also, right before I bought it, it sounded like the ujoint was squeaking (it rarely does it now) and now it has a crackling sound when accelerating at low-mid rpms coming from the middle or the back of the truck. It sounds similar to when you turn your hot vehicle off and the exhaust makes crackling noises sometimes.
1987 ranger 2.9l... My truck had no power while accelerating. We'll I changed fuel pump and filter. And still no power. I bought a computer and it tells me the map sensor is not at normal vaccum levels. The ego sensor is reading always rich. Egr valve not opening. Knock sensor was was going crazy. And computer couldn't raise engine speed above normal idle. Could all this be because of one sensor or should I just change it all.
