I am considering purchasing a 1999 4x4 ford ranger. The original owner has receipts for everything done on it recently. Rebuilt transmission, New ac, New shocks, new tires. I have never owned a ford but I always loved my friend's ranger. The only problem I had with it was an occasional clunking/rattling noise when test driving. I have read and was told this can be a common problem.

I have noticed that sometimes (this has happened twice so far) on slowing down, (just letting off the gas) it will make a large clunking popping noise like you hit a large pothole and bottomed the truck out (or if you had hit a small animal) However, both times nothing was in the road way and no damage was done to the truck. both times it has been in 2high.
The truck does not swerve, grab or anything funky other than make a loud CLUNK every now and then.
This has happened when you let off the gas at about 25mph and coast along. (it may be when you apply gentle throttle to keep rolling, but I can't remember, I was not driving the truck this time, the first time it happened was several weeks ago and I put it off as a freak happening). I will check the usual suspects, u joints, ect, but I was wondering if there could be something else happening...vperhaps something in the front diff? or transfer case? It kinda felt like it came from the front of the truck.
My M5OD in my 1999 Ranger 4x4 with 3.0 occasionally pops out of 3rd gear. I think it does it only under light throttle or coasting. Also some vibration, especially in 3rd gear. Once in a while the gears grind when shifting into third. Truck has 145,000 mostly highway miles. Frequent fluid changes with Redline D4ATF.
What could be the cause, bad synchros ? How hard is it to remove the transmission and make a repair for something like this, what kind of special tools, etc. I assume a transmission jack would be real useful, what else would I need other than the normal wrenches and sockets ? Is there a good shop manual recommended for doing this repair ?
My 1999 Ranger with 4.0 EFI V6 engine makes a "sucking sound" occasionally. At first I thought it was a belt slipping, but now I believe it is some kind of intake air leak. If I stop the truck while the sound is on, I can open my driver's door and get to about the front of the hood before the sound stops. I have never been able to observe the engine with the "sucking sound" on. Sometimes the engine will kill when the "sucking sound" stops, if the engine is idling and in gear. If I just keep driving normally, there does not seem to be any permanent problem. What the problem is?
View 4 RepliesI have a '97 Ranger with about 120k, 5 spd manual transmission, 2wd. For the last 2-3 months I'm hearing and feeling a clunking or rattling noise (I can't decide which it is) coming from the rear of the vehicle at random times.
I can't really predict or find a pattern of when the noise will happen, but it seems like it is most likely to happen when I'm either accelerating up a hill or when I'm braking relatively hard. It happens whether the clutch is in or out. Doesn't seem to matter. It does NOT happen when idling, only when traveling. I don't ever remember it happening at highway speed (65mph).
If I have my hand on the stick shift I can feel the shaking / rattling as it happens. There seems to be no impact on the performance of the vehicle - no additional trouble shifting into or out of gear, accelerating, or anything else.
On a recent trip I towed a 1,000 lb trailer and I did not feel or hear the noise at all during that trip (about an hour each way). Any guess as to whats going on?
My 1999 ford ranger, when started, shakes and then while i am driving. my check engine light is on and reads a #3 cylinder misfire. I have taken it somewhere to get it checked out and they can't figure out what is wrong with it. this problem only happens 50% of the time. I don't know what to do. Also just got a tune up.
View 14 RepliesSince putting my new exhaust on (post-cat)... I've had this "ping" occasionally from the exhaust. Sounds as if someone is taking a small metal bar and hitting the exhaust. Random intervals, pretty loud, does it whether the engine is off or on. Only does it when warmed up though. I can't narrow it down due to the randomness of it.
View 5 RepliesOkay so the other day my ranger wouldn't start after i got off work, it would turnover only occasionally but now it wont even do that. I've tried the fule turn on/off switch underneath the passenger glove box. I unscrewed the fuel like valve cap and pressed the pin but the fuel like barely squirted out so does it mean my fuel pump is bad or what??

View 3 RepliesI was driving up a hill an it started to loose power. i got up to the top of the highway an stopped an it just shut down. got towed home i thought it could of been the alternator but dose not seem to be. took the belt off to spin the motor an its not spinning. drained the oil an there is no metal in it to see if the motor was done. i try to start it an it just dose a click click an that's it. Is the motor done or is it a transmission problem?
View 3 RepliesLately I have been noticing clunking and rattling when driving my 2015 DSG GTI. It only happens under very light acceleration in gears 1 & 2, and is far more prominent when going uphill for some reason. I have almost 16k miles and have just been starting to notice the noise recently, and think it has gotten worse. I took it in to VW and replicated the noise for the tech, and showed him the video below. He seemed disinterested, said it was normal, and that it would not be worth going in to mess around with to try and fix/possibly replace the gearbox, as this could not solve anything and create more problems.
He also said not to worry about it because I have 60k on the powertrain warranty (which realistically isn't terribly long). This sound does not seem normal to me and it really annoys/bothers me given the car is only about a year old. The dealership is going to have the regional VWOA rep in so I can replicate the sound for him and it will be his decision whether they will proceed to look into it. I am looking for thoughts, comments, any opinions on this sound. Am I crazy and exaggerating, or should what seems to be my transmission not sound like this? At 30 seconds you can hear the sound far better, and a little later on I stick my phone out the window and you can hear the rattling more clearly.
Note (this gives me a little piece of mind): I asked a sales rep to test drive one of the 2015 GTI's on the lot and when doing this up hill you hear a similar, but significantly less noticeable rattle/clunk.

I have a 2000 Ranger step side and the bed side is loose and and I'm trying to figure out how to reattach it. It's loose towards the front of the bed on the passenger side right where the actual step is. Is there an attachment point underneath the the plastic step cover?
View 2 RepliesThere is a clunking sound and feel from the front end of my 2007 Ranger FX4 when in 4 wheel drive. This happens sometimes but not always on engaging or disengaging 4 wheel drive, as well as sporadically while driving along. I took it back to Ford on warranty with this problem last year, and after a few attempts I had them admit that something was wrong and they finally diagnosed that it was the front drive shaft that was binding where it leaves the transfer case, this was replaced. I have now put maybe 50km (max) on in 4 wheel drive and the problem is back, I don't think the problem was ever fixed.
View 14 RepliesI have a 1997 Ranger,4.0,4WD,auto,extended cab. It's always been a great truck. wouldn't start yesterday . I thought the battery was dead , put it on charger and it started right up today. It ran for about ten seconds, started rattling like crazy , stalled and now it won't turn over. Has 150,000 miles on it. Just had oil changed, No ticking or anything else. Drove it every day, just came back from 1000 mile trip.

I've been hearing this rattling, sometimes kind of a metallic ping, from the rear the last week. I thought it was probably the universal joints, didn't do it often, only under load between 1500-1900RPM roughly in second, third and fourth. I planned on working on it this weekend.
Today it started really making noise, sounds like valves rattling as though the timing was too high but it was coming from the rear end. It was making it all the way through the gears into fifth, even when cruising. Once it cooled down a bit it nearly went away.
I'm going to get started on it as soon as I can, but I can't get it in the shop to pull the differential cover and take a look right now. Dad's shop is full of crap, I live on top of a hill, not many safe places to get one up in the air properly. What is causing that sound?
first off my truck is 2001 ford ranger 4x4 with an auto. transmission. when I'm driving around in 2wd, everything is fine...
when my 4wd high is on, and I'm starting from a deadstop my truck makes a weird "clunking" noise in the front end. If I'm stuck in mud or snow, and I give gas it keeps "clunking". where the problem comes from?
1990 Ranger 5 speed... The tranny has recently started making noises, first I thought it was the throw out bearing but I am afraid it is more than that. As I go thru the gears the trans makes rattling/grinding sounds: in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th it is loud but 4th it is quiet. What might be going on inside the tranny....
View 14 RepliesSo, fresh off the new brake actuator pump and new hybrid battery and a nice four hour drive yesterday and today i went over a small bump and started to get a loud clunk/rattle coming from the driver's side front wheel area.
It got worse as I drove home and even rattles going straight on a fairly flat road when i hit only minor imperfections. It sounds like something is loose. I cannot reproduce any noise bouncing the car or rocking it side to side.
Prior to this I would get a squeak/groan from the driver's side when I would go over speed bumps and similar large dips or rises, but that has been curiously quiet for awhile.
I've had a rattling/clunking sound from my front left wheel recently so I jacked up that corner. As soon as the tire elevated off the ground the bottom fell inward. I could easily push the top of the tire inward and pull the bottom of the tire outward. Does this lead to a bad hub or bad ball joint(s)?
View 10 RepliesOur Ranger, 2002, 4 cyl. 2.3 5 speed is shutting down while driving. This has happened twice very recently. Both times on interstate at highway speed. First it loses power then completely shuts down. After stopping, turning key "off" it restarts and runs fine. It does take a longer time to crank before starting.
It is not throwing any codes and the CE is not coming on. I suspect the fuel pump is shutting down. Seems like fuel pressure loss is reason for loss of power? Then extended cranking to restart is the initial build up? What else could it be? If not the pump itself, is there something that would take away power from the pump then get reset?
1994 FORD RANGER stalls while driving - differant speeds ...differant miles ...no rhyme or reason to it - cranks right back up ...can even pop clutch and cut it back on. Already replaced Ignition Start Module - Dpes sensor - temp sensor - and scan shows all codes are clear and truck passes. We are clueless to whats causing this. 4 cyl 2.1
