I was driving today at maybe 55mph on the highway my car has 82,000 miles and I started to hear a loud jackhammer like noise come from under my hood I pulled over and popped my hood I didn't really see anything mind you I'm no mechanic but I was able to make it home but when I accelerated it got louder, what could be causing this problem? It is a 2006 Ford Mustang 4.0l v6....
View 19 RepliesMy 2003 Mustang convertible (6cyl) has recently started making a loud clicking noise under the hood that seems to come on after driving in stop-and-go traffic or when turning on the a/c. I don't notice it when driving on the highway at a relatively steady speed. The clicking will continue for a minute or so and then stop for a while. I had also noticed a strange melting plastic or chemical smell coming from under the hood whenever clicking has happened. I had also noticed a couple weeks ago that at stop lights, the a/c was blowing warm air even when on the coldest setting. The air would then become cold again after driving for about a minute. What could this problem (or problems) be and can I fix it (or them) myself?
View 2 RepliesFirst off I have a 1997 F-150 4.6 with 205,000 miles on it.. stock engine and tranny. It's been a great truck and never given me any major problems. But recently something under the hood (wish i could be more specific) makes a really loud HUMMING noise (almost sound like a trumpet). For example- say im driving on the highway and i let off the gas, this humming noise will appear and it is very loud, but right when i give the engine some gas the humming goes away.
Or also when I am driving through town, when i come to a stop light, let off the gas to apply the breaks, this humming noise will come about. what i have to do is stick the truck in neutral and give it a big rev (which i do like hearing my exhaust so it isn't always annoying) and then it stops. note though, it doesnt happen every single time i let off the gas, however it is pretty frequent.
do yall think this is in the air intake system? thatd be my only guess because when i rev the engine it quits, but one thing is it sounds like it comes more from the passenger side of the truck, and it seems to occur more often when the temperature outside is cold. im completely stumped by this one, ive never heard anything like it.
I have a 2006 v6 ford mustang and just developed this problem yesterday.
When I drive the car, the temp guage stay right in the middle, but when I park I get white smoke come from under the hood. I popped the hood and saw coolant leaking from where the top radiator hose meets the engine block. This was producing the smoke. When I checked the hoses, the top hose was hot and hard, the bottom hose was cool and soft.
Extra info:1. I did not touch the radiator to see if there were cool or warm spots2. The overflow bottle looked empty or close to it, but the engine was still hot from driving to work
Thinking this could be one of the following:
1. bad thermostat
2. clogged radiator
3. Air bubble somewhere blocking the coolant flow
Everything might be a slight exaggeration. But fuse 14 covers Backup lamp and day time running lights relay coil, A/C Pressure Switch, Redundant Speed Control, Heated PCV (5.4L), Trailer Tow back-up lamps, ABS, Reverse park aid, EC Mirror.
This is a 2006. 4.6L V8, SCREW. I don't have reverse park aid. When the fuse blows there is a loud screeching noise from under the hood. Can't identify it because the fuse wont go while I am sitting idling in the driveway. The parking break i9ndicator comes on, the ABS indicator comes on, Cruise control goes away and the A/C quits cooling but still blows. I assume EC Mirror means Electronic Compass Mirror. So I need to figure out where the short is.
My 99 F150 4x4, 5.4 triton all of a sudden got very loud and has a loss of power. To me, it sounds like a cylinder is straight open to the atmosphere. I at first thought a spark plug blew out or an injector somehow came dislodged but I checked and everything seems ok. It's coming from the passenger side somewhere but is so loud under the hood I can't tell exactly where.
I took the valve cover off to see if a valve is stuck open or something, but I don't really know what I'm looking at as far as internal engine goes. I turned the crank by hand with a ratchet and the valves seem to follow the cams, but I've never inspected valves before so don't really know what to look for. What could be causing this loss of power and incredibly loud noise?
I have a 2004 Ford F250 Turbo Diesel, egr delete, headstuds, intake, dual stacks, etc and when i turn my wheel a loud whining noise comes from under the hood, I noticed it put tension in my brakes. When I accelerate it gets louder and when i let off the gas it goes away... i checked my fluid in my steering pump and it was low so i put some more in and the next day it was all sitting under neath the truck.... any quick fix or do i need to replace the whole pump?
View 2 Replies2.7L V6 here. It's got a loud ticking noise under the hood that sounds like it is coming from about the middle of the head closest to the front. It's been doing this for a long time now and is finally bugging me. The noise is related to RPMs meaning that as you rev the motor it gets faster (but not really louder). When I pulled the valve cover about a year ago both heads had lots of gunked up old burned oil which I cleaned up as much as possible. It doesn't throw any codes and runs just fine.
I'm about 99.9% sure I've got a collapsed lash adjuster(s). Is there a way to test it without pulling it? Can I pull the valve cover and have someone turn the engine over a few times to check for oil pumping from the lash adjusters? Is there a way to press it and see if it moves without pulling the cams? Any options to try and clean them while still in the motor?
The wife came home with a really loud screaming noise coming out from under the hood. I used my stethoscope and I'm 95% sure it's the alternator. It was a pretty easy removal process, sending it out to be rebuilt tomorrow. I guess at 90k I have no reason to complain.
I chose to get it rebuilt because of info that I had heard true or not, that Toyota alternators have an internal clutch and aftermarkets may not work properly.
I have a 2000 VW Passat 1.8T Automatic. During a cold start, I notice a rather loud noise like a motor whirring that lasts for approximately 30 seconds. My RPMs also run about 200 higher than idle during this time. After the 30 secs the noise goes away (sounds like this motor powers down) and the RPMs return to normal.
It doesn't happen every time I start the car, just when it has been sitting for more than 4-5 hours or overnight. What this is and what if anything I should do?
My son has a 2002 Honda Civic, 4 cyl, manual trans, front wheel drive, 110K mi. There is a random extremely loud thud-like noise coming from under the hood that sounds like someone hitting the car with a sledge hammer and can be felt in the steering wheel and in the gear shift knob. The thudding happens occasionally when first starting up the car but mostly starts happening after driving it after 10 minutes or so. The thudding occurs both while driving and when stopped (at stop lights for example.) The thudding doesn't increase in frequency with an increase in speed. The noise is so loud that it sounds like everything under the hood will fall out. On rare occasions it can be driven for 30 minutes or so around town without making any noise, most times however it will eventually start making noise. I've replaced the struts which were leaking but the noise still occurs. What could be the problem?
View 1 RepliesTwice during the 6 months that we have owned our 2010 Prius, a loud clattering noise from under the hood occurred upon startup. After shutting it down and restarting, all was normal. It sounded like an engine that was getting ready to throw a connecting rod. The dealer could find nothing wrong and when I contacted Toyota's hot line, they were clueless as well. One service writer suggested the ABS as the source, but I've owned 5 other cars with ABS and never heard anything like it.

View 1 RepliesSo I just picked this car up, (2000 20v turbo passat) 93k miles and I did a tune up (plugs, air filter, oil change w/ oil stabilizer, and injector cleaner) when i was out beating on the car a little, afterward I got to a stop sign, and i heard a VERY LOUD noise coming from the passengers side under the hood, it almost sounded like a loud motor, or the turbo but it was too loud to really determine... it was only there for about 10 sec then turned off but came on again about 1 min later. is this a bad bearing in the turbo? or what might it be?
View 16 RepliesMy son has a 03 mustang GT. He called and said it was making a loud clicking sound. I investigated and it appeared to have a exhaust leak, but I couldn't feel where it was coming from. I started tearing down until I got to the plugs. One of them blew out if the head. I was shocked. Have you heard of this in a car? I'd heard the Ford trucks had problems with the plugs blowing out. Its fixed and running like a champ now.

My boyfriend thought perhaps I need a jump start, so we were going to try that first but when we went to pull the latch inside the car to open the hood, we found that it doesn't work. So now we can't get the hood open.
So, I'd like to first know how I can get my hood open easily, and what may be going on with it not starting.
The wife drove the Excursion (V10) to work today and it ran normal and didn't have any loud noises coming from under the hood. When she started the engine to return home it immediately started knocking. This is not a ping, but a knock. Not a loud heavy knock, but much louder than a ping. It has a fast frequency, seems too fast to be a rod knocking. The frequency is similar to a valve issue, but the knock seems to be too heavy for lifters. Oil looks good. Just changed out 2 weeks ago. Truck is driven everyday.
View 11 RepliesJust noticed a sound of air sucking sound under the hood on heavy acceleration only, the harder I push the louder it gets. Either sucking or hissing sound. I feel no difference in driving. No loss of power or anything else. Just the sound of air coming out like a leaking air line. I will check later this afternoon if its affecting my turbo boost. I have 235000 klms on the clock
View 5 RepliesI have a 1968 Mustang with a straight 6. From all the research that I could do, the engine appears to be correct for the car.
I replaced the starter with one from AutoZone - DuraLast. The starter engages fine - no noise and the car starts fine. The noise comes when the starter disengages. The noise only last a few seconds. Sometimes it is very loud other times it is very brief.
I did a compare of the old starter to the new starter and noticed that the gear in the old starter sites further back in the starter housing then the new starter. Not sure if that is the issue. I have tried to do some searches to get some views of the starter but no luck.
Had numerous problems the last 9 months, and we've replaced the thermostat, water pump, clutch fan, flushed radiator. Last week we thought the heater core had died (air blowing cold, but gauge not indicating any overheating). But it just need flushing, had a clog. Has been kicking out the heat ever since.
What is bothering me though is that the temp gauge always seems to be right at the C, even after driving for a while. Before the van had issues, it stayed right between N and O.
Then this morning, I hear a loud pop, smell horrible burning antifreeze and smoke/steam pouring out from the hood (I managed to park it immediately, had just dropped son off at school). After I'm parked, all the antifreeze puddles underneath.
So hubby comes, and we see that the top radiator hose has blown, with a lovely crack/hole from one side to the other. Now, that hose was old, and probably was a big part of the problem.
We fixed it, and I just drove it again, but I am watching the gauge. And the van is blowing nice, HOT air from the heater. But the gauge is staying right at the C. Used to run between N and O. It is jumpy...not jumping towards hot, but little jumps...below the C, above the C, up to the N, back down to C...it just seems strange to me; it doesn't go past the N at all and spends most of its time at or below the C.
I guess I am wondering if there is any other reason why the hose could've blown this morning besides it being old and worn out....for example, excess heat and pressure building up that for some reason is not registering on the temp gauge? It's making me nervous. Is there something else besides the thermostat that could cause erratic temp gauge or cause gauge not to show me the true engine temp?
My Explorer overheated yesterday. Found a very loud hissing sound coming out from under the hood. Let it cool off filled it with antifreeze, started it up, started hissing again. Found the thermostat had broken. Replaced the thermostat. Filled it up again. After replacing the thermostat I found out the hissing sound was coming from the plastic thermostat housing. Replaced the housing. Again I refilled it with antifreeze.
Started to let it warm up and noticed liquid dripping out of the exhaust pipe. Checked it out. Had a green color to it. Then I noticed the coolant resivor was full up to the cap. I did not fill it up past the full line on the side of the resistor. Tried removing the cap.
Found out it had a ton of pressure under it. Bled off the pressure. Refilled it again. Did not put the cap back on. Tried starting it. Instantaneous geyser. Runs like it is missing on 1cylinder. No oil in the coolant that I can see. No coolant in the oil. Could this problem be caused by a blown head gasket of a crack in 1 of the heads or in the block?
