--2003 Mountaineer 4.0/4WD 194,000 -- My mountaineer is making a loud, metallic, rapid "clanking" sound on slow max turns. It seems to be coming from the transfer case. Would that be possible? I recently changed the front wheel bearings and ball joints and the sway bars look good. There is no noise at idle and it will occasionally make a similar noise while going straight, then stop during the turn.
View 7 RepliesWe discovered that our 99 mercury Mountaineer had bad rotors. last night I hooked up a trailer and was going to work with a friend move a couch when I heard a loud grinding sound. I turned around and determined it was coming from the wheel. I purchased a new set of pads and started to change the pads. In the process I found a broken sway bar connector. I changed this as well. It still felt bad and there was a sound when I braked.
I took it to pep boys for a free brake inspection. They pointed out that the rotors needed to be replaced. I did not let them do it because I can not afford that right now. The car is a secondary not a daily driver. My wife says we shouldn't drive it at all. I say we can still drive it and expect I will have to replace the brake pads sooner than normal and replace the rotors when we can, later. My wife insists we will do more damage if we drive it as it is. I say what's the difference we need to replace the rotors anyway.

Slow speed sharp turns left and right taking off from a stop I hear a thumping/light popping in the driveline. Seems like it could be a differential issue?
I also hear an unusual noise while accelerating in a straight line.....under throttle from a stop, it sounds like a rapid chirp on and off, every other second. Almost like a valve tick. The noise is heard under acceleration in gear, not when cruising at light throttle. I put the transmission in neutral while rolling, revved up the engine and the noise is not heard. Only happens when in gear and accelerating.
the truck has a few problems however nothing that I cannot be fixed (I hope). It has low miles, and I think I know why.
(1) I found out today that if you turn hard to the right the motor shuts off. ...It restarts easy.. . It will not do the same on left turns ..
(2) the Elect windows still go up and down at anytime after you cut the motor off and pull the key...
(3)The AC cuts off and will not restart..(the PO has replaced the low pressure switch) however I found that power is going to the clutch. I taped the clutch and it pulled in....If I remeber right it was spoken somewhere the one could pull the clutch and remove a washer...Is this true, and is any special tools needed?
Just want to share a problem I recently noticed on my Tiguan. Its a 2010 4motion I bought March last year and currently has 19000km.
Lately I noticed it makes a clanking sound in the front area as I accelerate off a right turn. It always does it on right turns and on rare occasions on left turns as well.
It doesn't do it if I turn right coming from a complete stop and happens only when I slow down coming up to a right turn and it makes the sound as I accelerate.
Have a 05 GLI tiptronic. Every time while making a left turn there is a LOUD vibrating/rattling sound coming from underneath my shifter. Dealership told me it was my exhaust rattling since it was larger than OEM. That doesn't sound right at all.....
View 1 RepliesMy Odyssey has 110,000 miles but since about 50,000 miles (I can't exactly remember) it makes a loud wining sound from the engine when I slow down, gets louder when I turn a corner, like going into a parking spot. The problem is it comes and goes and I can't seem to pin point what kind of weather or other conditions make it happen.
View 1 RepliesLariat stepside, 5.4L with 150k miles. Loud popping noise, almost a clunk, when making a slow sharp turn. Put it on jackstands and did the normal tire grab and shake and found no issues there. Tie rods, ball joints and sway bar links all seem tight. Looked for signs of unusual rubber to metal and metal to metal wear and found nothing. The only thing I did see was the rubber boots on the upper control arm ball joints were split. What I have checked or if I am missing something?
View 9 RepliesWe have a 2003 Subaru Legacy named Penny. Lately she's been "thumping" when we make slow tight turns -- usually when pulling into or out of a parking spot. This is less of a noise, more of a sensation. Thumping and bumping as if the front tires are flat, but that's not the case. To complicate matters, it doesn't seem to happen first thing in the morning. Starts showing up after a drive of 30 - 40 minutes and continues to get worse the longer we drive throughout the day. Driving straight is fine, less sharp turns also fine. Mechanic guessed axle and replaced both front axles last week. But the problem persists. We are independent musicians, traveling often, and NEED this car to drive reliably!
View 9 RepliesHave a 2007 Avalon, original owner. For past 3 winters, when temp is 10F or less, there is a loud clicking sound when the car turns left from a stop. The frequency of the clicking sound increases as the car accelerates. Once the car makes the turn, the sound stops. In extremely cold weather (0F or less) the noise happens when turning right, but less intense. The clicking usually goes away after driving several miles and will return after sitting outside overnight or for 4 or 5 hours if the temp is below 10F. Dealer claims all of the CV joints are good. I drove it with a tech this morning and it was clearly present.
View 6 RepliesMy 2000 Excusion V10 has original shocks and has no suspension mods. I am adding Rancho 9100 XL's soon as well as a swaybar to the rear. Is the clanking sound I am hearing over rough surfaces from the worn out shocks on front or something else like ball joints?

Yesterday morning it was a rainy and damp weather around 3-4 degrees Celsius when I started my Prius. Usually I start it up, get out and have a cigarette or something before driving so that the ICE has a minute or two to warm up. Immediately after the ICE fired up I heard a very loud clanking and vibrating sound. I immediately shut the car down, checked all fluid levels and read the codes. No codes, no warning lights. Fired it up again, same thing. This time I opened the hood and went to see what's going on. The ICE made this noise and vibrated like hell. After a few second though the clanking and vibrating slowly went away and it started to sound normal again.
Scared the living crap out of me! This hasn't happen before or since. I had like 2-3 40km drive cycles after that on the same day with no problems. The day before I had to move the car just a bit, and when doing that the ICE came on just before I turned the car off. No codes, no warning lights. First thing that comes to mind was a misfire that vibrated the engine like crazy, maybe due to the damp weather effecting spark plugs or a flooded cylinder that was due to the only a few seconds of engine running the day before.
I have an 04 mountaineer and when i shut it of i get a loud banging noise from it. Its sounds like its coming from the engine compartment. The truck itself runs great and I didn't see any exhaust leaks. It has 70,000 on it.
View 2 RepliesMy car is the Speed3 and runs great or it was. I recently had my timing chain replaced and it was running great. Been 2 weeks since the repair. Today coming home from work and exiting the interstate I was in 5th shifted down into 4th then 3rd. When I came to a stop behind traffic the engine died. I restarted it and smoke came from under hood. Wouldn't start so I had to push it over. Waited 15 minutes as tried many times just warning battery down. After 15-20 minutes I tried to start and it started but loud clanking coming from the engine. Stopped and checked oil. It was dry! Got oil replaced (5 1/2 qts). and started. OK to start but clanking sound is still there. On hook to the garage. There was no oil light or anything. Just got done running 70+ mph on interstate for 12 miles no problem.

View 2 RepliesToday after school I hopped into my car and turned it on, it made a weird clanking kind of sound, but then sounded normal. I turned it off and it did the same thing again. I put the car into drive and it was so slow accelerating. I had my foot to the floor and it was barely catching speed while my rpm was somewhere in the 5000's. I got home and I don't know what to do. ALSO, when my Escape is at a stoplight, it turns off and shows the engine light. What's going on. I had to put my car into park, re-ignite the car and go through, again, acceleration tremendously slow. It is a Ford Escape 2001 XLT with a new engine with 80k miles on it.

View 2 RepliesMy girlfriends 06 Sonata 4cyl threw a p0011 code a week or so ago. I looked online and saw that it could be dirty oil so I immediately changed it (it was about 400 miles overdue at that point). I also looked on the forums here and was referred to a thread that suggested replacing the oil control valve. My girlfriend drove to work a few times before I fixed it (maybe a 100 miles total) and the car stalled out in the middle of an intersection. I then replaced the OCV and to my discontent the problem was still very present. Very loud knocking or clanking under the valve cover and sluggish idle. Her mechanic now says that it is a job for a hyundai dealership and that it could be something as bad as a head or engine rebuild. What the problem could be?
View 2 RepliesMore times than not now, when making a sharp left turn and sometimes a left turn in general, a loud popping/clanking/knocking noise comes from the rear of my truck. I can feel it in the steering when it's about to do it. The steering wheel will become stiff when turning left and when I straighten up it will pull to the right (just got the truck aligned so I don't think that's a problem). Rear left tire will spin like its struggling to spin. After all that I can make a hard turn right and "pop" everything will seem to go back to normal. 1999 Silverado Z71 5.3l ....
View 5 RepliesI have a 2003 Ford F150 with a 5.4V8 Triton 4X4. The truck is about to roll over 200K here soon. I am feeling/hearing a vibration/grinding sound coming from the truck when I am moving slowly and making turns, either left or right turns. Seems to happen more so on left hand turns. I have changed all power train fluids and filter, and still does it. I do not feel or notice the vibration/grinding when I am going straight or at highway speeds. It is only when I am moving from a stop and making turns. How to diagnose, find out, repair, fix this issue?
View 4 RepliesI've been noticing a metal type 'clanking' sound whenever I am gently accelerating up a hill on my 2.4L.
It doesn't happen all the time though. It's not the usual GDI ticking sound. It can be heard when the windows are open but yet I can not tell where the sound is coming from. It doesn't happen enough that I can replicate it so I haven't taken it in for a check. The car drives fine though.
Sounds when going up a hill? Not sure if it's from the engine or from the transmission getting confused trying to change to the right gear. Perhaps the sound is just normal...
