Ford - Mountaineer :: 2002 V6 - Vibration At All Speeds Over 5 MPH

Mar 23, 2015

My wife's 02 mountaineer AWD 4.0 v6 non-flex fuel has app. 152k on it. And it's really in decent shape. But over the last month a vibration at all speeds over 5mph has started to develop. It doesn't change with cornering it's constant until you stop. I suspect a passenger side wheel bearing. But when you lift that tire off the ground it has no play in it. But when you lift the entire rear end and spin the tires there's a distinct rumble you can hear. BTW this is a non-LSD from what I gather. Wheels spin in opposite directions when lift up.

Looking at the half shafts there's some ability to twist them. I haven't tried to see if there's any play in them, ie in and out movement. I am considering replacing both wheel bearings and half shafts. My wife likes the car and it's been fairly low maintenance. I've been looking for any info online about replacing the half shafts and haven't found much. I have seen some comments that they rarely go out. How can I determine if it is the half shaft? Is there a retainer clip or special tool needed to pull them from the pumpkin? Or do they slide off? Is there any seals that should be replaced while I am digging into this project?

Toyota - 4runner :: 2002 Vehicle Developing Vibration At Freeway Speeds

I have a 2002 4Runner that has recently developed a vibration at freeway speeds. I purchased new tires about two months before the vibration started. I have been back to the place where I bought my tires and the assure me that they are balanced.

I have been dealing with this problem for the past couple of months and have been getting nowhere. When I took my 4Runner into the dealership to get the lower ball joint replaced I spoke with the service folks about the vibration problem and all I got in response was "we've never heard of that before".

Corolla :: 2002 - Front Passenger Side Vibration At High Speeds 50mph

I just bought a 2002 corolla with a salvage title. I am having trouble with the front passenger side vibration at high speeds 50mph on up. It had the vibration when I bought it and I put 4 brand new tires on it, and had the front end aligned and had a fellow mechanic look at it and and said everything up front was tight. The guy I bought it from said he had the front brakes just done but I feel a pulsating as when I apply the brakes. My fellow mechanic said he would turn the rotors next week, my question is what would be my next step if that not it, axle? I really wouldn't car but I drive this car 150 miles a day to work and its all highway.

The switch bars go up and down but blower motor does not change speeds. also upon opening the hood I found 2 large mouse nests ,1 on passenger side fender and 1 center of engine towards the back. Are these related or could it be a switch issue. How to remove switch and test it.

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2001 - Quick Vibration / Shudder From The Rear After Acceleration

I now have an '01 Mountaineer with AWD and the 5.0. I have a strange vibration that only seems to happen when I accelerate as I get on the highway. I get up to speed and just as I let off on the throttle I get a vibration/shudder from the rear. Almost as if I ran over the rumble strip on the side of the highway. It's a short grrrr, then it goes away.

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2010 AWD - Vibration Coming From The Front Of Car While It Accelerates And Also When Turning

I have a 2010 Mountaineer Premier AWD V8 47k miles. On acceleration there is a hum/vibration in the steering wheel and the gas pedal between 30-50 mph. This is my third Mountaineer and I have never noticed it on the others, I just got this one about 2 months ago. The others were V6 models but were AWD. When I turn the 4x4 to the lock mode there are various noises/vibrations coming from the front of the car while it accelerates and also when turning.

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2010 - Slight Vibration Through The Steering Wheel And Pedals

Over the past month or so my wife and i have noticed a slight vibration or? I don't really know how to best describe it other than a feeling. The truck has developed this feeling thru the steering wheel and pedals. The best way i can describe it is like a bearing going bad?

It is full time awd and I am assuming it is an awd issue. The truck has about 60,000 miles on it. It can be felt at all speeds. I rotated the tires with no change. My next step would be to go thru the front end, ball joints, tie rod ends, etc. But I really don't think the issue is in the steering. the truck drives straight and no steering vibration.

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2002 - OD Off Light Flashing?

The below is for a 175k mile '02 Mercury Mountaineer 4.0L with 5R55W trannie that has previously had somewhat of a whining sound in 2nd gear (I thot it was rear differential). Note: I just changed the fluid & filter myself last week due to its shifting being a little harsh. Then, this past Sunday, the O/D light started flashing after about 5 min of driving (but the CEL is NOT on). It also did so the next two times I drove it after that.

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2002 - 3rd Row Seatback Removal?

How the seatback comes off of the 3rd row seat on an '02? There is a spring or something protruding from the seatback on the right side towards the bottom. I'm afraid it's going to stretch or poke a hole in the leather. I think if I can get the back cover thing off I can reach up under and fix it. I don't know if it's a spring our of place or what.

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2002 4.6L - Engine Is Seized

2002 Mercury Mountaineer 4.6L . Ok, 140,000 miles and Engine is seized. Got truck for cheap. So, my problem is this: most salvage yards say that the ONLY engine that will fit into my truck is from an 2002 explorer 4.6L or a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer 4.6L.

Others say the mustang engine or F150 will fit. Can I have other options for a engine swap?

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2002 - Over Drive Light Blinking?

2002 Mountaineer... Driving into work today, my over drive light started to blink very fast. I have not had any trouble with high RPM's or shifting..

We had a very rainy/slushy/snowy drive in and never went faster than 30 miles per hour. Could an ice or snow build up be the culprit? I sure hope so!

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2002 - AC And Heater Air Comes Out Of Defrost Vents

On my new to me 02 Mountaineer, the a/c and heater air on my climate control system is acting up. Everything is working as it should, except that when you direct air to the floor, the air comes out the defrost vents. I took the glove box out and when looking from the passenger floor towards the center, I can see 2 actuators that seem to be working. I was wondering if there were more than 2 of them, maybe one on the drivers side that I am not seeing, Didn't know that if maybe when one closed that another one would open elsewhere. As I said everything else is working as it should. Also the recirculation door is working as it should. Something else that I noticed is that the top port(#6) on the row of the vacuum hose plug does not have a line on it. Where I can get a diagram or picture of the hvac system.

Mercury Mountaineer :: 1999 - AC Doesn't Blow Cold At Lower Speeds Or In Traffic

I have a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer with 315,000 miles and pleased to say it’s a great car. Although in recent years during hot days the A/C doesn't blow cold at lower speeds or in traffic. It didn't do this when it was new say 200,000 miles. I checked the coolant charge at it remains fine no leaks, I think at at some point my mechanic did a conversion to the new refrigerant R something. What can I do to keep the A/C blowing cold at lower rpms? I have to add that it will also start blowing warm while driving down the interstate as well.

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2002 - Power Steering Failed With Zero Warning

My son was driving our 2002 Mountaineer when the P/S just quit. It never made any noise, had plenty of tranny fluid in it, it just quit. When I jack it up, the steering works fine, no hitches or sticky points. So, I replaced the P/S Pump, still no power.

Is there a valve between the pump and the rack itself that could have failed? There are no fluid leaks what-so-ever, never have been. This has me stumped.

2002 Mountaineer,178,000 miles.

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2002 - Clunking / Clanging Sound When Going In Forward And Reverse

I have an 02 mercury mountaineer awd. It's making a clunking/clanging sound when going in forward and reverse and it gets louder when turning. Just replaced driver cv axle, changed fluids on front and rear differential also put the stiction modifier in rear. It only does it on the ground assuming it's putting a load on it. Won't do it on a lift. What might be causing it. Tires are same size also.

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2002 - No Air Flow Volume Out Of Heat / Defrost Or AC Vents

My 02 Mountaineer doesn't have any air flow volume out of the heat, defrost, or a/c vents. The temp will change from hot to cold and the air direction will also change from floor, dash, windshield, etc. The a/c recirculation door also seems to be working. The fan sounds as it is running very fast, just not putting out any volume. What should I look for?

When home put into reverse hear it go into gear , but slip. All other forward gears same, hear go into gear but slip, except second would hold. I think low fluid, or mechanical problem about 155000 miles. 2002 Mercury Mountaineer.

Ford - Mountaineer :: 2002 V8 AWD - Clunking Noise In Front Driver Side Wheel Area When Slowing Down

Our 2002 Mountaineer with AWD started to have a clunk noise in the front driver side wheel area. It happens only when you take you foot off the gas between 30 and 65 MPH. If you slowly ease up off the gas no noise you have to totally remove your foot from the gas. It sounds like something needs grease or like a gear is a little loose. I have seen some post about noise but have not found one that happens in this situation.

Mercury - Mountaineer :: 2002 - Brake Fluid Is Flushing?

2002 Merc Mountaineer, 135K miles: I've been taking my car to the local town tire shop for years for my regularly scheduled maintenace. Just the usual oil changes, tire rotations, etc. If they saw some minor adjustments needed, they would just take care of it. About 2 years ago, when the economy tanked, they started hitting you with "The Form" - a checklist of all the recommendations needed for your car. For the past 3 oil changes, they said your brake fluid is black and needs to be flushed. Never heard of this so I always declined. Last week I dropped the car off for an oil change and planned to pick it up later that afternoon. I got the call about 2 hours later, and you know when you get a call before you expect, they always have found something wrong. This time it was "the brake fluid is really, really black" and needs to be flushed. I caved in and said OK do it and it was one of those XX.99 prices. Is this a needed maintenance or did I get flushed?

Ford - Focus :: Front Vibration Between The Speeds Of 50 And 65

So I have a 2007 focus. It develops a front vibration between the speeds of 50 and 65...where it starts to even out a little. I would like to think of this as an alignment problem (i guess we should be checking on the alignment more often) this occurs after about a year of new tires. we are about to purchase new tires for the car again, and i dont want to end up buying new tires every other year for the car.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Vibration Between 40 - 45 And 52 - 62 Speeds

I recently had u joints and left front wheel hub assembly replaced at a local mechanic. Ever since I have a vibration between 40-45 and 52-62, the vibration can be felt in the steering wheel, the seat and the floor. The mechanic claims I need a new driveshaft as some of the counter weights were starting to rust. I indexed and removed the drive shaft and had it rebalanced at a local machine shop. This did not solve the vibration problem. There is also a transmission leak starting from the extension housing. How I can start to trouble shoot the problem. 04 F150..
