1990 f150
I have a leak in my rear fuel tank, the front tank has been blocked off and is not used, The leak is at the seam of the two part tank, once removed is there a way to seal this? or should I just replace it?
1987 f150 302 4spd 4x4. When I bought the truck 4 years and 12K miles ago the orig owner had just installed a new front pump (in tank) and new switch thing on the frame rail. He said shortly after that the rear pump stopped working so he just ran off of the front tank. That's what I've been doing also except as of the last few months it has started to leak from the rear tank (I don't ever put gas in it and was empty when I bought it) and dies periodically from time to time? Where the leak could be coming from. I do suspect the dying has to do with the leak though.
View 3 RepliesMy '90 E250, open road, mini motorhome , says on the radiator mount , that there is a Fuel shutoff switch that may have been activated.... I don't have the manual for it, so I need finding the switch, so I can reset it ....The vehicle sometimes starts after about 2 mins with the ignition on, but today won't start, even after a longer wait. Both tanks are full...Fuel gauge not working , in either front or rear position. I can hear the rear pump,in the tank, but can not hear the front one....When I bought it last year, it ran fine after waiting to start, and both positions worked , no stalling , or shutdown.Came home about 95 miles, and it's been parked almost all the time since. I want to start it up weekly , but am having that same problem ...Today was the first time I could see the Fuel Pump Shutoff warning ...but can 't find the darn switch to try resetting .....

View 10 RepliesThis van has had a couple of fuel pumps, no surprise there, and i need to look through my paperwork and find out how many miles the current one has on it, but it has the STRANGEST habit I've ever had on any vehicle. Starts fine, runs fine, no fuel pump noise when van is running, and when you turn it off, the fuel pump creeks on and off for several minutes.
I mean a strange creaking noise almost like a shorted electrical device or a vehicle's brakes when you park it on a hill and the breaks creak as it settles into place. I'm probably doing a lousy job of describing this but i don't know how else to describe it!
ALSO, if you lay under the van and wait til it stops creaking, you can tap the bottom of the tank and it will creak for a few more seconds. You can tap repeatedly and make it creak more. Is it about to explode? Can i trust it on a road trip?

My problem: For the first year I owned the truck, everything ran fine and it started up really quickly even after it sat for a few days or a few weeks. I have since, for about the last year or so, had to crank it for 30-45 seconds to get it to start. This all started around the time my fuel pump went out. I replaced it with an Airtex fuel pump from Autozone. I also installed a glass in line filter before the carb in front of the distributor.
I noticed that after about 4-6 hours, the fuel had drained out of the filter and that's when I would have to crank it forever to get it going. It also seems like there is no fuel in the carb as it doesn't even try to start when it first gets cranked. I thought this was a bad pump, so I bought a new one last week and tried it again. Sure enough after about 4-6 hours, everything is empty again and it takes forever to start it. So it's not a bad pump, or so I think.
The other day I backed it into my driveway and left it, something I never do. I checked about 4 days later and there was still fuel in the filter. This makes me think that gravity is making it drain back to the tank.
Is there something that would cause this? Also I have found a one way fuel check valve online that is supposed to remedy this type of problem. Do they work for this situation? Or is there something else I should be doing to fix this? It has taken a bit of a toll on my starting system having to crank so long all the time. I have so far had to replace my starter, starter solenoid, and all the battery cables, starter cable, terminals, etc. due to excessive wear.

I have a tank that's been out of my truck for a couple years. I want to clean it up real good inside before re-installing. Are there any products you can recommend that will give a deep clean on the inside to remove any gunk and some slight rust? Also, is there a product that should be used to coat the inside of the tank after it's been deep cleaned?
View 2 RepliesI am unable to get fuel delivery from tanks to engine in normal operation. I can however get pumps working with jumper wire to them. It will start with ether but not stay running on it's own. Could this be a relay or something in tfi thing ?

At first it seemed like the back tank was siphoning from the front tank. Now I have fuel coming out of my front tank filler neck. When I open the back tank gas cap, there is enough pressure to spray me with gasoline. I am not familiar with the fuel delivery system of my truck ...
View 2 RepliesI recently purchased a used 1999 F250 Super Duty with about 150k miles on it. The truck runs great and I have no complaints but there are a few things that need to be taken care of. It looks like there is a very small fuel leak where the filler neck ties into the rubber hose that runs into the fuel tank. There is a thin film of diesel along the side of the tank, on the leaf spring, the air bag and various other places. Nothing is dripping. I want to drop the tank and replace the hose. The Haynes manual says to depressurize the whole fuel system--is this really necessary if I don't plan on doing anything to the system aside from dropping the tank?
View 2 RepliesThis is on my sig truck. I can hear the pump running, and a sound like fuel spraying around inside the tank, but not getting any up front to the carb. What is the most likely culprit for this? Can't get the bed off, or get the strap bolts loose, so I haven't been able to "eyeball" anything, yet.
View 3 RepliesI've had a fuel leak near the pump of my 79 F150 with a 400 for some time. I didn't know exactly where it was coiming from, but fuel was being sprayed on to the oil filter from something near the pump. I assumed it was the steel line, and that it had rusted through or cracked, and was going to replace it when I had a chance. I was poking around today though, and realized that the fuel was not leaking from the line, but from a hole in the side of the mechanical pump.
For someone who knows what these pumps look like, there is a horizontal cylindrical bump out near the top of the pump, on the side of the pump that is away from the engine. The fuel is spraying in a mist out of one side of that. To me, it always seemed to be a screw channel, but I didn't think the pump was 2 halves put together? Need to know more about my pump, what that bumped out section is, or why/how fuel could be spraying out of it.
Will it be easier for me to drop the tank or to take off the bed of the truck does a 1990 F350 7.5 liter dual tank gas

It seems like when I let it sit for a few min that the gas just drains back into the tank and there for it wont start up that fast, it takes a while to get it going but when I shut it off and start it back up its like a new truck. It starts right up!!! Any tips on what might be wrong, maybe the gas cap is letting pressure out? Im 17 and my dad knows alot about trucks but he cant tell whats wrong.

View 4 RepliesMy '97 truck has over 315,000 miles on it, original fuel tank, 30.1 gallons, replaced fuel pump maybe a 9 months ago. No gas gauge problems until today. Bought gas this AM and had about 3/4 of a tank. During my drive home (56 miles round trip), noticed the gauge was read about an 1/8. Had monsoon rains today, so I wouldn't have noticed any gas pooling under the truck or a smell if it was suddenly leaking. On the was to fuel up, low fuel light came on. Bought only 5 gals of gas in case tank was leaking and I have to drop the tank. Low fuel light out after restarting the engine but the gauge reads the same, about an eighth? Diagnostic ideas? Won't really be able to examine the tank for leaks until things dry off, probably tomorrow. Diagnostics??
View 4 RepliesI have a 1990 Aerostar 4WD, 4L, with about 120k miles. About 6 months ago I started my van and noticed under it that gas was dripping onto the exhaust at the Y-joint and evaporating. I shut off the van and drove another car to work. That evening with fire extinguisher at hand I drove my car up on ramps and quickly got under it looking for the leak. NOTHING. 6 months later...yesterday. I drove for a few blocks from home and notice heavy gas fumes etc. Stopped the van and again gas was dripping onto the Y-pipe joint.
This was an explosive situation... I pulled off the doghouse cover and saw, smelled and touched gas friom on the right top of the engine near the back. My questions are: What could randomly be leaking at this location and is it fixable without pulling the engine. I pushed the van to a secure location and am afraid to turn it on. Maybe I will drain the gas tank before then. I am just now trying to find the schematics for the fuel line delivery stuff. Where to go for a manual.
I have the dual tank setup & this is my problem.
Last year I replaced both tanks - the front was leaking bad and rear was starting to leak. After replacing both tanks, the rear tank (which I was using before) was unusable - it would idle fine and when applying throttle would stall out. The front tank's gauge did not work.
This week I pulled both tanks. Had new gauge assembly put on front pump unit. Also had the rear pump replaced with a new (rebuilt?) one. Installed both tonight. Now the front tank is running fine with a gas gauge. I Filled up the rear and once I had about 16 gallons in, fuel started leaking from the front top of the tank it looks like (where in-tank pump is). This leak has continued as the truck was turned off too. I think it may have stopped now, but its dark and I am parked on a hill. As another problem, I still have the same "stalling" problem. The rear will idle fine, but start to stall out when a load has been applied.
So to summarize:
- What is causing it to want to & stall out?
- Why am I leaking gas?
It seems to stop dripping gas after (maybe) the pressure is lower from leaking the gas out. Also, when 1st starting it up on the front tank, it wants to stall out...probably from the gas that leaked out while it was shut off? The truck will run for about 1/20th of a mile on the rear tank when initially starting it up before showing signs of stalling.
