Ford - F150 :: 1997 - CEL On And P401 Code Popping Up
Mar 16, 2011
1997 Ford F150. 6 cyl, 4.2L, 138K miles. (Still) keep getting back the P401 code. I've checked (and re-checked) and cleaned all the ports and checked connections on the EGR valve, DPFE sensor and EVR solenoid. Everything seems to be working OK. Have replaced the EGR valve, DPFE sensor and EVR solenoid and (still) after clearing the code and driving ~30 miles, I keep getting the CEL light pop back on and P401 code popping up. Is their anything else to check ??

1997 F150. 6Cyl, 4.2L, 139K miles. The truck threw a P401 code(EGR Flow insufficient)and won't pass emmisions here (due by the end of March). So far this is what
I've done : Replaced EGR, replaced DPFE, replaced EVR solenoid, removed throttle body manifold under EGR and cleaned all ports (they weren't even dirty), cleaned and checked all vacumn lines from the DPFE to the main EGR tube from exhaust. Also cleaned the main EGR exhaust tube.
Everything is squeaky clean. All voltages going to the DPFE/EGR are spot on and the whole system seems OK. But the P401 code literally comes on almost immediately (less than 2 miles) after clearing the code (I hooked up my scanner to see how long).

1997 Ford F150. 6cyl, 4.2L 138K. Have CEL on and code reads: "P401 - EGR Flow insufficient". I replaced the EGR valve and checked the ports leading into them and they seem clean. There is one additional component called "EGR feedback sensor" which I really don't want to replace unless I can determine that this is faulty.

So the past few weeks my truck has been sputtering a lot. It seems to do it more so in low RPMS but when I lay on the throttle I didn't really notice it. I haven't had time to look into the issue but yesterday the issue got drastically worse and the CEL finally came on. Registered P0174 as well as a number of other codes including misfires on 7 of the 8 cylinders.
So far I have replaced the fuel filter. Spark plugs are only a few months old. I didnt think it would make sense for all of the coil packs to go out at once so I was thinking either a fuel issue or vacuum leak. Why would it only spit out P0174 (Banks 2) and not show P0171 (Banks 1) along with it? Fuel pump? Vacuum leak? Where should I start? 2002 F150 5.4L...

I have a 89 f-150 xlt with what i believe is the m5od (4 speed with O.D) transmission and the 5.0 motor, the trans has been whining since I've owned the truck and it started popping out of reverse on me a couple months ago, now i have to slam it into gear to make it go anywhere even when I am going down the road! The clutch is fine but the trans is hanging up, anyways i have a granny gear transmission a buddy of mine gave me out of an 85 f150 that had the inline 6 if i take the bell housing off of my transmission can i put the internal slave cylinder on that transmission? Will it work or will i have to find a way to put an external slave cylinder on it?

Just got this vehicle a week ago. Test drove before I bought but that drive was fine. Then after driving I started have a popping. Started paying attention at this point and noting what happens when.
It seems I don't have any problem at all until she gets warmed up. I can drive about 20 miles with no problem. Then the OD is Off light starts flashing. Then when I decelerate to stop, I have a big popping at exactly 20 mph. I then have 2 smaller pops once I take off from my stop.
I started searching online everywhere to determine the cause. I am a female whose daddy taught them just enough not to be completely stupid, but not near enough to be able to fix my own car problems. I thought from what I've read that this issue might be a torque converter. I do have a hum after a while that sounds like road noise....like I saw one other person post about bad TC's. But I haven't seen any posts that address the popping.

My friend has a 2000 f-150 2x2 and was following him and he said he heard something pop and then no transmission , haven't put a code reader on it yet. It's not the flex plate starer works fine fluid is a little discolored and has no bad burned smell to it.

I have a 1997 F150 that has been making an odd noise (something new and different). It seems to be coming from the engine-ish area. It makes a hollow whooshing kind of noise, followed by a thump/thud that I can feel through the accelerator (think frighting off beat base drum living under the hood). It sounds like a very large valve of some kind closing. It does not do this all the time, and both times it has done it have been at low altitudes- might not mean anything but my truck doesn't seem to like low altitudes- it idles low there. It has done this twice now- once 2 or 3 times in a minute for about 50 miles and then it just stopped miracle!.
I added oil in the interim of that and I thought maybe that had worked- it was embarrassingly low- took 4 quarts to get it to read half way up the dipstick. I might have murdered my truck. It did it again when I was on a long trip, coming home. It only did it 4 or 5 times. My truck kindly listened to my desperate plea and hasn't made a peep since, which means I made it home but now I can't get my mechanic to have a clue. I tried that the first time and he said "hmm." That was incredibly useful. So do I need a new truck? I might be able to afford a 1998 model.

1997 F150, V6, 4.2L. Replacing the O2 sensor, driver's side before the converter. I've tried using the O2 sensor socket (I have a full set) and it keeps slipping off. Afraid I'll "round" the sensor even more. I've tried heating it up, penetrating oil and it's not budging at all.

I have been told by the AC shop that my AC manifold is leaking. I have a f150 1997. When they say manifold do they mean both the suction and high pressure lines? In pictures it looks like the AC manifold includes all the lines to the compressor.

I've recently purchased a 02 F-150 4x4 with 135k showing. About a week after purchase 4 COP's were replaced to eliminate a skip that started the day I drove it home. After a few hundred more miles it started shuttering at take off, much the same as the trans shuttering usually in higher gears/speeds. Only does it briefly in 1st gear and occasionally it goes into 2nd, but stops immediately after shift. After about 10 miles it stops doing it and until the trucks sits awhile it stays gone. About the same time a popping sound started coming from the rear axle at slow speeds. It changes sides as you drive and turn, and sometimes goes away intermittently altogether. Also is it possible or probable the two are related ?

Had the check engine light in the 2005 F150 (90,000 miles) come on. Got the code checked and its P0420. I know that has to do with the cat threshold levels etc. So I believe I am looking to replace the o2 sensor, if I am not mistaken.
How hard of a job is this? Ive done a decent amount of engine work. Just looking to see if that is the right thing to try first, replacing the sensor, before replacing the cat.
Also I know its the right bank, but if I am not mistaken there is a before and after the cat o2 sensor, which do i replace? Both?

I left the keys in the ignition last night. I didn't think it was left on, but apparently it was. This morning when I tried to crank the truck, it wouldn't start. The dash lights came on, but it didn't make any sound. I tried to jump it off, and it still won't turn over. What it could be??
The truck that wouldn't start was a 97 Ford F150, the car I was trying to jump it with was a 96 Honda Civic. Someone told me that might be the problem, that the small car wouldn't give enough power to a truck...

I have a 1997 ford f 150 lariat with the 4.6 v8 and my engine had a piston slap so I replaced the engine with a used one and I put a new water pump on the engine. My problem is the heater does not get hot and it only gets warm when I get on the freeway and the rpms stay steady for a bit. but when i idle it just blows cool air. the heat door works cause I can turn it to cold air when I'm on the freeway and i just replaced the thermostat so I don't believe its that. It weird because the heater worked fine before I changed out the engine so i cant figure it out. the only thing i can think of is the water pump is bad out of the box. Could it be the belt or does spacing on the water pump have something to do with it. nothing is leaking.

1997 Ford F150 4.2 liter V6 with Eod transmission. I have replaced the shift actuator, the brake switch, the ignition switch and tumbler, tightened all nuts and bolts on and around the steering column shifter, and had a mechanic replace the shift cable and go through the wiring from front to back. He couldn't figure out the problem.
I recently noticed while coming to a stop on a gravel road I touched the brakes and the front brakes locked up. I have anti-lock on this truck so is this normal and could this maybe be the problem with no brake lights and not coming out of park? Just for giggles I also had to come to a sudden stop in town on pavement a couple times and the tires locked up so hard I could smell rubber burning where the tires slid.

I'm going crazy here with this strange noise on my '01 Screw. EVERYTIME it starts to rain - and I mean immediately upon starting to rain - I get a strange clicking and popping sound that is unmistakably near the passenger rear door, up high, almost in the corner of the cab. Today my wife and I were driving and it starting to rain and I saw her start cocking her head and I said, "Do you hear it too?" She confirmed where it is coming from, but I just can't figure it out. My truck has a cap on it, but it doesn't seem like it is related to that. It is ANY kind of rain too. Precipitation=sound. Really odd.

The "service engine soon" light is on. I got code 0141 on the code reader. The repair manual for my F150 is stating that the code is for bank 1 sensor 2.I want to check the sensor, but I don't know the location of bank 1 sensor 2. I would like your advice as to the location of the sensor, and what should I check for?

I am at about my wits end with this P0301 (Misfire On Cylinder #1) code on my 2003 Ford F150 4.6L. I've replaced the coil pack on that cylinder, all the spark plugs, and replaced the fuel injector on that cylinder. We keep clearing the code and it keeps on coming back.
The weird thing is that it only misfires after the truck has set for a few hours and then it only misfires when I first put it in gear. Once I am out of the driveway and on the road it's fine for most of the day unless I let it sit for several hours and then it might misfire again.
We noticed that the connector to the fuel injector is wobbly and doesn't snap tight to the fuel injector (before and after it was replaced) due to the clips on the side not working well. We zip tied it together this afternoon to make it fit tightly to the fuel injector to see if that works.
What could be causing this? Other than that misfire the engine sounds great and the trucks runs very well.

I have a 1999 Ford f150 4.6L automatic. My check engine light had been on for awhile so I dug out my DTC code reader erased it, came back on 10-15 minutes later. I got the code P1131 sensor indicates lean which you would think is the O2 sensor a week later it won't start. Then randomly a couple days later it starts then that night it didn't. Hear is the parts that confused me. I don't believe an oxygen sensor would cause it not to start, it's cranking nice just won't turn over. And when you get the code P1131 I believe it bay 1 where the readings are off Well here's my readings.
Fuel system 1 CL-FaultCalc load 34.1%ECT 201.2 FSTFT B1 -1.6%LTFT B1 0.0 %STFT B2 -1.6%LEFT B2 0.0%ENG RPM 1101VEH SPEED 27 MPH
It looks like to me bay 1 and 2 are off? I'm not mechanically challenged, but not a mechanic either, I do most my own work on my vehicles..
