Ford F-150 (2009-2014) :: Windshield Wipers Chatter Sporadically
Aug 8, 2014
I have a sporadic problem with my wipers - most of the time they run correct but sometimes there is an annoying chatter - I have the Bosch replacements and they run well even when dry but every once in a while they start chattering. One time the wiper blade even fell off.....if I go to the dealer, they want to see the problem but if it is sporadic they can do nothing (had a problem with a speaker and it took 3 tries before they heard the defect) - what was the solution?

I have a brand new 2011 Avalon. It has 5000 miles on it. The car is a dream to drive. Best car I have ever owned. I love it. Except for one HUGE problem.
The windshield wipers chatter.
I told the dealer and they put on a pair of new blades. It didn't fix the problem. They still chatter.
I went to another dealer during a rainstorm because the chattering was driving me insane and without an appointment they threw on another pair of blades. I'm talking real Avalon blades. Not some third party brand. Guess what. They still chattered.
I am at a loss at what to do. When you look closely at the blades I notice that the ends near the bottom portion of the windshield don't make contact with the windshield. That can't be right.

Every time my wipers go they chatter or bounce on the glass as they go across. Even when there is a TON of water on the windshield it will still do this... though not as much. It seems to happen more at the bottom of the wiper.
I don't know if it is a design flaw with the wipers, if I just have a bad set of blades, or what could cause it. In the past with other cars I have only had this problem when I tried to wipe dry glass.

I replaced my wipers once before but it must not have been a perfect fit because there was a lot of chatter. I had to go the dealer and have them install Toyota wipers but they were expensive. Have any of of you found wipers that work perfectly, if so what was the name and brand or model?

The windshield wipers on my 2010 F-150 do not wipe a clear path. I have tried several different brands of blades without any good results. It is like the blades have to have more tension against the glass. Is there a way to increase this tension?

2010 F150 - 5.4L ... I encountered a disturbing chatter/buzzing noise while towing recently. I have not towed a lot with this truck but recently bought a 8.5x18 enclosed car hauler and have towed the trailer about 3000 miles so far. Twice I have experienced a chattering noise from the transmission under very specific conditions. Was traveling on a long flat road at about 70 MPH in 5th gear at about 2100 rpm when it started. If I let off the noise would instantly go away.
If I accelerated and went into 4th the frequency and tone of the chatter would not change with either RPM or speed, however, when I let off it would go away. It is almost impossible to reproduce because it has to be flat. It did once start to chatter in 4th when I was pushing a strong headwind at about 70 MPH and 3000 RPM.

So I've had my 2015 IS250 for only 7-8 months, and it happened to rain in CA. My windshield wipers were put to use, but the wipers make loud noises. The rubber does not seem to wipe the glass smoothly or quietly as it skips or drags when the wipers go up. Will the dealership fix this at no cost?

I just bought this truck 2 weeks ago, and it's been great till yesterday coming home from church when I couldn't get the wipers to turn off. I had them on very lowest intermittent setting, and then turned them off when it stopped raining. But every few seconds the wipers are still making a pass! The truck is an XL model, so it shouldn't have the rain-sensing wipers, should it? If it does, then where is the sensor, and is there a way to disable that feature? But the goofy part is that when I got in it this morning to go to work, it was fine.
I turned the wipers on intermittent again for a little bit to get rid of residual rainfall from overnight, and they worked fine. It's worked fine all day. I thought about calling the dealer back where I bought it from to see if there was anything they would do to warranty this seeing as I just took delivery 2 weeks ago, but never did. I figured if it's not going to replicate the problem, then they're not going to be able to fix anything. They won't know what to fix if they can't physically see what it's doing. The Ford dealer I bought this truck at is about 90 minute drive, so I would probably need to take a day off work sometime this week to deal with that. Another reason why I hesitated to call them.
I'm referring to my red beast, the 2012 F-150 XL 4x4, 3.7 V6/auto. Like I said, this truck shouldn't have the rain-sensing wipers should it? Not being the XL model? If so, where is the sensor(s) located at? Because the only water I could see on the glass was off to the sides, out of the reach of the wiper blades. As I scroll through the settings on the Information Center between the gauges, I don't see anything to activate/deactivate rain-sensing wipers. Is there a way to disable that, if I have that feature? Are these trucks common for multi-function switches going bad?
I used to have a Dodge truck back in the 90's, and musta' replaced about 3 of them in that stupid truck! In the 4 years I had it!! I'm afraid of a repeat experience in which I'm chasing down electrical issues for the next 10 years.

My '09 Platinum has rain-sensing wipers, and I do not like them at all. They are always going to high-speed when it's not raining that hard or they don't do anything at all when there's a mist that needs cleaned off.
The wiper stick has HIGH, LOW, and various INTERMITTENT settings. Any of the INTERMITTENT settings are AUTO for me. I'm constantly messing with it to get the wipers to act correctly. I just want to turn them off. How can it be done?

I have noticed on my 2013 F150 Eco that I have seem to always have a oil type smear. on the inside of my windshield. It is very hard to clean. Looks like the ones I would get when I smoked many years ago. My Boss has a 2011 F150 ECO and we have two others in our company. We were talking at work today and it seems all 4 trucks are having this problem.

2014 lariat crew w/10k miles...let son drive it on date & somehow came back with snapped off turn signal/multi-switch...had local mechanic replace-now button on end doesn't activate wipers or washer spray (actual wiper switch works, as does dimmer function & signals). Mechanic rechecked & says all ok but switch may need to be programmed by dealer...really?? Seems like it would b plug-n-play. Why just the washer function wouldn't work?

In the last few weeks I have noticed that when I have the control set to floor only (manual system, not dual) I still have more air going to windshield than the floor. I can switch to Windshield/Floor, Center Vent and all seems ok. Just when in floor only it seems to keep going to Windshield. Asked the service rep at last oil change and he said it's normal for some air to always go to the windshield/defrost. I'm going back to dealer and check a new F150 XLT to verify I have a problem.

This may sound strange but when it's been cold my windshield wipers have been moving more slowly than normal. is this a sign of the motor needing replacement or is this normal?

I have a 2000 ford windstar with intermittent wiper problems. In off pos. they don't return to bottom of windshield, only the constant settings works perfect intermittent setting the wipers swipe up and stop instead of swiping back down it waits until the next interval to swipe down so I'm waiting about a min to get 1 full swipe up and down sometime when they swipe up they stop right b4 they get to the top or in the middle and when switched off where every they are at that's where they stay so I have switch off and on to get them to go down as far as they'll go when done using them..

My windshield wipers on my 97 f150 go very slow. Not sure if it's bad motors or what but I find it weird for them both to go at the same time. Is there a relay that could be causing this?

My Windshield wipers randomly come on once in a while. I've noticed it more on a warmer day, but sometimes even when it is cold. There is really no pattern, sometimes the go once, sometimes they go for 2-3 minutes. Where should I start? Switch or wiper motor, maybe something else?

1999 f350 gas 4x4 . Truck runs fine. even passed inspection. However just recently my windshield wipers seem to work only sometimes. Right now won't come on at all. I checked the fuse.

My wipers are just beginning to rust. I'm either taping the truck and masking off the wipers but would rather take them off. I don't understand what is holding them in place. First post on my first Ranger that I just bought.

I've had my F350 SD for 6months now(21,000 mi) and have seen probably 20 times when I insert the key and turn the switch on the windshield wiper's will make one swipe when NOT turned on. Also have seen several times when starting the truck the radio comes on and it was not on when I turned the truck off. Yesterday when I finished work and was heading home I started the truck and the wipers came up about 1/3 of the way and stopped. I can't seem to duplicate the problem so I have not scheduled it in as of yet.
