Ford F-150 (2009-2014) :: Twin Turbo V6 / Startup Rattle
Jan 19, 2017
This engine really puts out the ponys. it tows ok but not like my diesel. The twin turbo does not get the claimed fuel economy. And now the start up rattle. I seem to be getting the run around on the repair.

2012 3.5 EcoBoost is a twin turbo or single?

Still considering the change from my '08 F250 to a newer F150 with the EcoBoost. I have been driving as many of them as I can to get a feel for them. My current question is this: if one exhibits the dreaded rattle at cold startup, does it always get worse with more time/miles? I found another one that I'm pretty happy with overall, but it does have the startup rattle for about a second at cold start, and only at cold start. Is it worth the gamble, or should I keep looking? It's got about 108k miles and is otherwise in fantastic condition...

Just bought a watchdog monitor by Bullydog. What are the normal levels for Boost, MAF, Load for a SD Twin Turbo 6.0L?

Occasionally, under the right conditions, my turbo seems to surge...meaning I can hear, and feel the turbo kick in and out...kinda like it is right on the threshhold of not knowing if it needs to kick in out not. This usually only happens when I'm cruising along and just slightly give it a little more gas. Otherwise it seems fine...plenty of power etc. What could be going on here...just the nature of the beast??
My truck is a 2011 F150 Eco Screw 4by....

I just had a Viper 5704 2 way paging remote start alarm installed on my 2012 Fx4 Ecoboost and when the installer ran the wires from the inside of the cab through the firewall he went through the hole that the rubber grommet was in just to the left of the brake pedal. Instead of going through the grommet/plug, he pulled it out and ran the wires beside it and now the rubber plug will not seal and I can hear turbo/engine noise in the cab. Has alarm installed on a 2010 or newer F150 with this same layout and if so where did the installer run the wires through the firewall? Should I have them pull the wires out and run them through the center of the grommet like they should have done or have them make a slit in the rubber from the edge to the center (radius cut) and make the best seal possible?

2009 Matrix 2ZR-FE, briefly rattles on restart after sitting for one hour after reaching running temp. This engine doesn't rattle on a cold startup so I'm wondering what else other than the intake cam gear could cause this. 42,000 miles, 5-20 dino, regular service.

I've got a 2011 F-150 FX4 Supercab with the 5.0L.
I've noticed that very seldom when starting it up, something under the hood squelch's very briefly. The trucks got 3019.0 miles on it as I write this letter. The actual noise itself come's and goes in less than 1/2 a second, and the trucks only made this noise 3 times during the 3000 miles I've owned it, and all the times have been fairly far apart.
I was wondering if this would be cause for concern? My old 1990 F-150 use to do this, but its issue was the bearings going out in the alternator. With only 3000 miles on my new truck the bearings should be a non-issue. Everything should be a non-issue for that matter. I'm not actually all that concerned about it, as I said in 3000 miles its only happened about 3 times...So once every thousand miles or so. And as I said the noise comes and goes in less than a second, and truck always runs just fine. Its never driven any differently.
Could this be attributed to all the heat we have been having lately? I live West Texas and right now 105 to 110 degree days are pretty much the norm, and have been for almost 2 months now. Could the excessive heat cause any to screech like that? And of course the truck has not been overheated, nor has it shown any signs of overheating.

2013 3.5 Ecoboost. Starting the truck first thing in the morning, it idles very rough for about 30 seconds and then smoothes out. If I drop it into gear it stays rough as I back out of the driveway. Once underway it runs fine and otherwise runs/idles very smooth for the rest of the day. Doesn't appear to have any other symptoms of spark plugs/boots misfire so I'm thinking it might be something else?
On my old 02 F150 with the 5.4 this usually happened when the Idle air control (IAC) would get plugged up with carbon. I'd clean it and the idle would smooth out. This truck doesn't appear to have one.
Spark plugs are on my list for the near future. 47k on the truck so they are almost geting due. Trying to get my superduty sold before I spend a lot of time on this truck.

had enough time invested in repairs and so forth, to believe I recognize a Heat Shield's rattle, when I hear it.
At least that's what I THINK I hear. Under load (up hills or when the torque increases) I hear a sympathetic rattle (or buzzing) coming from somewhere underneath.
My guess: one of the Heat Shields has a few tack welds that have popped on my 2009 F-150, and buzz (heat shield against the Catalytic body or whatever) when the sympathetic vibration hits a certain level. All I really have to do is find it, to affirm what I believe. Fixing it............well...........that's another matter. I suppose some garage somewhere will tell me that I should replace the component that has the Heat Shield attached to it, but...........I'd rather re-tack the Heat Shield or encourage that.

My 2010 F-150 5.4 L has developed a misfire. I don't have the codes right now but can get them. Replaced all plugs and 3 of the 8 cops. Misfires right after startup but as it warms up tends to smooth out. When it is acting up it almost stalls out at stops. Where to next?

I have a 2006 f150 with the 5.4 with 150k miles and I thought it was originally an exhaust leak so had that checked then thought maybe the cats went back and had that checked and after that read up on all the IWE threads and decided to replace them. Replaced them and the actuator and the problem seems worse. Now the noise is constant will accelerating. It use to be intermittent but now it's all the time unless in 4wd or coasting. What the problem could be? I know the truck is 10 years old but in great condition, everyone is surprised it's as old as it is.

Have a 2011 F150 with the 5.0. 91K miles. On startup-cold or warm-there is a ticking/tapping noise coming from the engine for about 3-5 seconds then it goes away. Happens on every single start. Sound like it's coming from driver side on top of engine, but hard to pin point.

It is timing chains that are prematurely stretching causing this startup noise. The news is that there is updated parts out there to address this and Ford now has a TSB on this issue formally admitting to it being a common problem. I go over it all in this video. There is also a link to just how it sounds in the description of the video on youtube.

I had this plastic on plastic sound on the passenger side dashboard...this started last weekend when it was cold outside and drove me crazy, I looked around and came up with this piece of foam under the hood and windshield bezel next to the hood hinge....After a few field adjustments on this piece of foam I took my truck for a test drive and its gone....for now!

Very loud sounds like bottom end/rod bearing and is about to go out with a bang real quick!
Truck is a 2009 5.4 3V ...
Will the motor from a 2005 5.4 3V work to replace it? As I have one of those sitting in a old work truck. I know the intake etc is different but using the 09 stuff will it work and be a easy enough install or do I need a 09-10 motor?

I have a 2013 F150 3.5L Ecoboost XLT and have recently experienced a slight noise on acceleration in first gear. Sounds like a light rattle or ping. The dealer says it may be due to carbon buildup (I have noticed that the exhaust has a lot of soot on it). They are suggesting some additive to resolve this and she mentioned that the problem starts to show up at about 30,000kms. It does not affect power or cause misfire as described in posts.

Just took my 2014 F150 FX4 to the dealer for a rattle in the front and rear passenger side doors that rattle with the windows down . Sounds bad when you close the door. Dealer told me it was normal. So here I am with a 50,000 dollar truck with 5,000 miles on it and they say that's normal even tho the drivers side doors do not make this noise. Not really happy with FMC these days.

I have a 2010 F150 FX4 with the 5.4L, and lately under slow movement (less that 20km/h it is sounding like there is a rattle. I can try to get a video of the sound later, now I'm wondering if the universal bearings in the driveshaft would be making this noise or if it could be the 4wd actuators failing? Would either of these make a loud rattle? (Sounds like a heat shield shaking but all are tight). Had a Ranger up until last year so just learning the ins and outs of F150 life.

I've been having issue with my truck lacking boost over the past month or so. The psi levels are normal in the morning when I start it up cold, the problem almost always occurs at start-up when the truck is somewhat warm and has been sitting for an hour or more after use. I've had boost levels at idle from -0.14psi to -0.56psi and as low as -1.2psi when driving as the problem is occurring, but it eventually kicks on and goes to normal levels after several minutes of driving. After originally taking the truck to a local diesel mechanic I was told it had EGR codes and they recommended installing an SCT tuner and cleaning the EGR valve to solve the problem. I had them install an SCT 5015 tuner and clean the valve but I've still been having the problems with boost.

Now first let me start off by saying the trucks is running great great mileage still tons of power no problems, however I have one small complaint it seems since the first oil change with Mobil 1 about five thousand miles , as I'm driving the audible rattle and turbo spin up sound is quite prevalent? It's getting to the point that on certain job site young guys are asking me when did I delete the EGR and whether I used a banks open exhaust system?? what the hell is a banks ?? I have a very good friend with a 2014 that so quiet you can't even hear it.
Will this be normal that it will continue to get louder , I honestly put off buying a diesel for this exact reason I didn't want to listen to a tractor chugging down the road I hear enough of that on my farm with my 3 cylinder tractors. Why are the 14 models so quiet what's so different about the 15 and up?? I know they said it has a larger turbo but it can't just be that ?? and is there anything I can do to quiet it down?? I know I am old, but even I can hear that rattle its getting old fast like me...
