My 09 FX4 Screw has developed a strange thumping sound coming from the undercarriage within the last month or so. Very noticeable when turning on even terrain. It's just barely under warranty and I am planning on taking it to the dealer.
View 2 RepliesOur 2009 Santa Fe has a knocking sound coming from the undercarriage of the vehicle. It cannot be heard when parked or when coasting. If I gently depress the gas pedal enough to rev the engine to 1500-2000 rpm when traveling at speeds of 35mph or greater it can be heard. The rate of the knocking / thumping appears to be related to vehicle speed, i.e., the faster we move, the higher the knocking rate.
Yesterday I emptied the vehicle of all contents and was still able to produce the sound upon demand.
Hearing a sloshing scraping thumping sound coming from their 36 gallon tank under hard braking accelerating? It's loudest when the tank is between 200 and 150 miles to empty, I checked the spare tire and its tight, haven't had a chance to crawl under and look around yet though, I think something inside came loose. 2013 XLT.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2012 Ford Supercrew, 6.5 FT bed, Ecoboost that I got in April. About two weeks after I got it, someone ran a two way stop right out in front of me and I hit them on my drivers side front. Damage pretty minimal considering their car was totaled. I had my truck back from the body shop about two weeks later. Everything was great.
About 3 weeks after I had gotten my truck back, I began to notice a strange noise that sounded almost like someone was opening a door really slow. (more of a rapid popping sound than a high pitched squeak) It only happened on acceleration and the sound was coming from the passenger side right up next to the firewall. I figured it was something that wasnt tightened correctly from the body work. I took it to Ford for warranty work and told them this story...they werent concerned about the wreck. They suspected suspension...I agreed this was probable.
They checked and tore down the whole front suspension on the passenger side. They ended up replacing that whole side with brand new parts, new shock, upper lower control arms, new coil, gaskets, etc. Problem was still not fixed.
I took it back to the body shop where it was worked on and had the foreman ride with me so he could listen to noise. He said that he believed it was the suspension as well. He said that most of the bushings that sit on top of the coil come from the factory sort of dry...he suggested breaking it down and putting teflon grease between the bushing and the top of the coil tower that mounts to the frame. He said he has had luck with that.
Long story short, the driver side began doing the same thing. I took it back to Ford and they agreed to try what the body shop foreman had told me. Still no luck!
My front suspension has been replaced and broken completely down three times, tightened back up to factory specs, and re-aligned...and still no fix!
It sounds like a truck with 250,000 miles when I first accelerate, and I can still here it a cruising speeds when I hit bumps (air has to be off to hear it well)...
My 2011 F-150 Super crew eb has started to have a knock that comes from under the dash in the radio area. It doesn't occur every time it's started. It is 3 or 4 knocks that sound like a plastic gear slipping, then it stops. I am thinking something in the vent/defrost door. Is it vacuum operated or electronic? Any thoughts?
View 4 RepliesWell this week, everytime I was backing up, hit a pothole or sometimes when I turn either left or right or hit the brakes a clunky or sometimes metallic sound appears coming from the back the undercarriage.
First I thought may be one of the bars (TRD or the Ultraracing sway bars) were loose, we lift, checked the car with the guy who installed the bars and all of them were tight ,nothing loose, we discovered on the front is time to change the bushings of the front stabilizer bar and also the rods who run parallel to the shocks absorbers but we couldn't mimic the sound the shocks are fine.
Tonight my daughter was driving the vehicle so I have a chance to hear the clunky noise, which I think is coming directly from the inside of the drums the sounds intensified at the time of hitting the brakes but is not all the time you hit the brake when it happened.
Also I can't explained why I heard the sound when I turn left or right and still coming from the back, doesn't make sense I can't find no relation whatsoever

I have a 2009 XLT 4x4 and it has a faint squeal sound coming from somewhere. I can only hear it with the window open driving between 20 to 50 Kph after that road noise is too loud. First thing in the morning it is not there seems you need to drive for 10 to 20 Km before it starts.
Turning right it gets louder left it seems to go away. Braking has no effect on the sound.
I have warmed it up in the morning and it still takes the same distance to squeal. Had it in the dealer and they changed out a front wheel bearing but that did not fix the problem. Had them service the brakes to rule that out too.
So yesterday afternoon I went outside and started my truck up. Upon starting it up and flipping the AC to high I noticed a clicking sound coming from somewhere inside my dashboard. It did not change in rhythm regardless of what setting the blower was on. But it remained for a couple of minutes before it subsided.
For the record it wasn't a subtle clicking...It was a very obvious sound. After the noise went away I continued to use the AC and it worked just fine like it always has. What it could have been? 2011 F-150
I have a 2013 XLT with a sirius enabled radio. my display works (time,date, shows bluetooth connected) but no sound is coming out of the system. What this could be? i tried replacing the cd player/motherboard but that did nothing... could it be a fuse?

View 5 RepliesThis has happened about half a dozen times while accelerating. It sounds sort of like it's between a scratching noise and a rattling noise. It's only happened at highway speeds 50-60 mph while accelerating and will stop when I let off the gas. There have been a few times that i can get it to come back if i step on the throttle again, but will not duplicate every time.
View 14 RepliesSo I got this rattling sound like a piece of tin rattling underneath the truck, it is coming from the front of the transmission area. About 6 months ago the same thing was happening so I took the truck in for some other warranty work and had the dealership check out this rattle. When I picked the truck up I asked and they said it was rocks/gravel caught up underneath and they took them out and the rattle was gone. The truck is a 2010 FX4.
View 12 RepliesWhen being driven my '66 Stang makes a clunking sound in the front end which seems to be coming from the front toward the passenger side.
I've had the car in to my mechanic twice in the last 30 days for this issue. He took the wheels off, repacked the brakes on one side, but hasn't found the problem. During the test drives the car did not reproduce the noise.
Lately, I've noticed that when I really hear the clunking noise is after I've made a sharp turn, like when driving slowly in a parking lot, and have returned the steering to a straight position. We didn't make any sharp turns during the test drives.
My EB makes a moaning noise when I am accelerating up to speed when driving "old Man " style. I guess its the turbo blow off valve(s) like used to happen on my old 7.3's. I hope its not anything to worry about. The truck runs string and gets 18 mpg mixed driving. I do get bon it a lot too.
View 3 RepliesI've been getting a strange *whoop*-like sound inside the cabin of my vehicle.....very difficult to explain, and it occurs even when the stereo system is turned off......I hear a series of *whoop-whoop-whoop* sounds, sometimes just a short burst, other times they can last for 5 to 6 seconds. Try explaining that to your service department.....they think you are crazy.
View 14 RepliesI have a 2010 F-150 FX4 SC 4x4 5.4l w/ automatic that has 52,000 miles on the clock give or take, unmodified with the only exception of a remote oil filter relocation unit.
I bought the truck with 48,000 on it and did not have this noise, I've had it back to the dealer and their best mechanic went for a ride with me and the noise was duplicated and the mechanic had the deer in the headlight look on his face and said he'd never heard anything like that before. I've searched the net for anything similar like this but have not found anything. The noise rears it's ugly head after the truck is warmed up and it first started around 55mph and went away at 65mph , then re-emerged at 75mph and left again at 82mph.
Tried the usual test things while noise was present first loading and unloading the steering left and right, (wheel bearing) no change. Next I applied the brakes (caliper rubbing) no change. Then I tried shifting to neutral (transmission or carrier bearing) no change. I also tried shifting into and out of 4x4 (transfer case) no change. If I speed up above those speeds or slow down below them, the noise disappears.
Recently... the noise seems to be more consistent and when it's present at 80mph and you let off the throttle, the noise is present all the way down to 55mph then magically goes away. The noise to me sounds like a vacuum leak in a rubber hose or a dry spinning shaft in a bushing, sort of a low hum that sounds like it's coming anywhere from the motor to the transmission area.
I've got a strange sound coming from the front axle. I want to rule out/in that it may be my auto lock hubs. Can I slide the hubs out and drive around? I dont see any problem I won't be offroad, just some miles to test it.
View 1 RepliesIn the last few days I have been hearing like a thumping sound coming from the front of my car. It is happening when i going through a turn with some bumps, slightly aggressive, but not crazy. Haven't been in the canyon since it started so I am not sure how it will react pushing the car to about 7/10. Which is about as close to the limit as I will get off track. The sound has come at about say 4/10. just off ramps and stuff. It sounds very similar to a car with very tight coilovers. Could it be the XDS working? It isn't a clicking like a traditional diff, and I don't expect that it is. But obviously I don't have a lot of driving experience with an electronic diff like the XDS. I will take the car to VW as soon as i have time.

I'm looking at maybe trading for a 2004 F350 with a studded and deleted 6.0. It has a "thumping" sound coming through the intake like an exhaust valve is staying closed. My question is, how common is it for the rocker arm retainer or rocker itself to fail? It has 204k miles, and the owner says he was on his way home about 2 weeks ago and it just started doing it.
View 3 RepliesMy father in law has an 04 EX with the 5.4. It has a weird sound coming from the front passenger side. He listened to the jiffy lube kid who told him it was the brakes. I pulled one side completely apart tonight and the brakes are fine. We took it for a drive so I could hear the noise. It is coming from the passenger side up front. It is intermittent.
Doesn't matter if we hit a bump or pot hole. It sounds like a cat being run over. It will either last for a few seconds or just really quick. I crawled underneath and could not find anything loose. The first time I heard it I thought it was a shock. But the second time it was way too long to be a shock. And they are only a year old.
Secondly, it has a cat, and two mufflers..... Is this normal?
