Have a 2011 F150 with the 5.0. 91K miles. On startup-cold or warm-there is a ticking/tapping noise coming from the engine for about 3-5 seconds then it goes away. Happens on every single start. Sound like it's coming from driver side on top of engine, but hard to pin point.
View 3 RepliesI've got a 2003 f150 with the 5.4 and 128,000 miles with an engine tick. Its not an exhaust leak I know that for sure. It has came up in the last 20,000 miles. I've used motorcraft 5 20 w/ motorcraft filter. I've tried a kreen engine treatment with no change. Heres the description/syptoms:
-Slight clatter for 2-3 seconds upon cold startup (happens very rarely)
-top end ticking that is loudest and most noticable when warm (quieter when motors cold)
-not timing chains/tensioners etc because the noise is coming from the top end and most noticeable on the passenger side.
-at idle the tick is present-when you rev at idle, the noise goes away.
-Driving (or having the engine under any load for that matter) the noise gets louder.
-Anytime I accelerate, tow/haul, go up an incline the noise gets worse
-Sounds like a "whirring" sound from within the dash.
With all that said I am thinking the lash adjusters are getting noisy. I had a certified gm tech that has 40 yrs mechanic experience under his belt and builds prostreet muscle cars on the side look at it. He listened to it to it and that was his diagnosis as well as its not that bad so just live with it. The noise at idle doesn't bother me, its when im driving with the windows down. The noise drives me crazy and is a little annoying to me.

As I was driving home from vacation the other day while towing my boat I started noticing a tapping sound coming from the passenger side. Sounds like an exhaust leak or a lifter. Can't tell. Sounds louder under acceleration. It's a 2009 5.4 with 70k. Just had ford do oil change last week. Oil level is good.

I've noticed that very seldom when starting it up, something under the hood squelch's very briefly. The trucks got 3019.0 miles on it as I write this letter. The actual noise itself come's and goes in less than 1/2 a second, and the trucks only made this noise 3 times during the 3000 miles I've owned it, and all the times have been fairly far apart.
I was wondering if this would be cause for concern? My old 1990 F-150 use to do this, but its issue was the bearings going out in the alternator. With only 3000 miles on my new truck the bearings should be a non-issue. Everything should be a non-issue for that matter. I'm not actually all that concerned about it, as I said in 3000 miles its only happened about 3 times...So once every thousand miles or so. And as I said the noise comes and goes in less than a second, and truck always runs just fine. Its never driven any differently.
Could this be attributed to all the heat we have been having lately? I live West Texas and right now 105 to 110 degree days are pretty much the norm, and have been for almost 2 months now. Could the excessive heat cause any to screech like that? And of course the truck has not been overheated, nor has it shown any signs of overheating.
I bought a 2009 F-150 King Ranch a few months back. It has 125k miles on it and the only aftermarket thing on it is some larger tires. I love the truck but twice now (at two totally different driving instances) I have started hearing this bad sounding tap in the engine. The majority of the time it has ONLY been when I am in drive or reverse. I can especially hear it if I am going through a drive through. Anyways as I was backing into a parking space today it started making an even louder tapping sound. I recorded it and have provided the link to youtube..
It continued to make this terrible sound until I revved it slightly and then it went back to normal idle. This all started as I was in reverse backing up but this is the first time it has continued even into neutral. Really hoping for not terrible news on this. Ive read about the cam phaser issue and nothing has been done to those yet. It is the 5.4L and a 4x4. How to fix this and not have a clunker for a truck...

2011 f150 5.0... When I turn the key it cranks for about 10 secs I don't hear the fuel pump come on what should I check first before replacing the pump....

View 3 RepliesMy 2010 F150 Lariat Supercrew stated this beep yesterday. Every 15 seconds I get one beep. It seems to be coming from the radio, and the louder the radio is, the louder the beep. Even with the radio off, I can still hear it.
I've done lots of searches on this topic, but they all seem to be related to an airbag system issue, where there are 5 beeps in a row. Mine is just one short beep every 15 seconds. Can't find anything in the owners manual about this either.
I recently acquired a 2011 F150 Platinum. Nice truck! It has the automatic deploying running boards. They're nice but one problem: the driver side board takes about 15-17 seconds to retract after closing the door. This is way too long a time. The passenger side retracts after only 2-4 seconds, which is good. The dealer researched this to see if there is any way to adjust the driver side, but found nothing. I'd like the driver side running board to retract sooner after closing the door, like the passenger side.
View 1 RepliesI've had this truck since new and now with 98k miles I just started to hear the dreaded engine ticking. I realize that it is probably the cam phaser's. I have plans to take it to the dealer to get the plugs changed (actually not bad at $225) and now I going to add the ticking noise to the list. How bad will I get killed for two new cam phaser's? Also, since this just started, am I doing any more damage by continuing to drive it? I probably won't be able to take it it for another month.

Mine does a ticking noise, no not the normal ticking noise, but a different ticking noise like something is tapping something. Could this be that the fuel injectors or cold so it makes a louder noise? Another noise is constant clicking when I decelerate or am going very slow. It only does this when it is cold outside and it lasts for about 10 to 15 minutes and then the noise becomes a lot quiter. Is this normal?
View 16 RepliesI just bought a 2010 F150 XLT XTR SuperCab 4X4 with a 4.6L 3V engine. I had a 2003 5.4L and a 2004 V10 before and this new engine seems to be nosier then the older ones I've had. It's a ticking/fluttering type noise I here when I'm standing outside the truck while it is idling. Is it normal for these newer 3V engines to make this noise? My wife has a 2009 Hyundai Santefe and it makes a similar noise just not as loud. Does the 5.4L make a similar noise also?
View 12 RepliesI recently bought a 2006 Hyundai Sonata 3.3 V6. Had another issue related to the rear wheel, which I fixed. Today, I changed the oil filter on the car (along with the oil). I have heard this engine noise before, but with the cover off it appears a little louder. It's basically a ticking sound.
The engine uses no oil, and has no other leaks. It has some noise on startup for maybe 1-2 seconds (like a loud lifter or something, but it goes away in less than 2 seconds, and at the same time the oil light goes out). I changed the filter today because I was told that a leaky gasket could result in the Filter not retaining oil between starts, causes some minor knock for a few seconds.
But anyway, this other ticking noise seems to be regular, regardless of condition. I have heard some people say that some engine noise is normal for this engine, but how about this?
6.2L F250 truck is just shy of 60k runs good however on cold startup there's now a pretty loud ticking noise for a short period (30 seconds) until it warms up then it slowly goes away. Once its warmed up there isn't much of anything.
Did these have exhaust manifold gasket problems like the 5.4? Hoping that's it if not, any other common problems that would make that ticking noise and then go away quickly once the engine is warmed up.
5.0 coyote exhaust leak .. Since the cold weather has arrived i have noticed a new noise. During cold start engine warm up I hear a nice little tick-tick-tick which sounds to me like an exhaust leak. Is this a common problem? I have just over 58,000 miles would this be covered under powertrain or do they have some nice exclusions for exhaust?

I noticed some ticking coming from the engine during acceleration, and maybe it's my imagination, but it seemed more pronounced with the ECO mode turned on. I know these GDI engines are supposed to tick at idle, but is it normal to hear it during light acceleration too? My oil level looks fine.

So I have the tick noise at rpm's 800-1000 at drive through, stops, etc. So I did research on it a few months ago and saw that it might be VCT's but should be able to drive. so I drove it waiting to save money and have it go to a shop. well this past weekend while coming home from work my oil light came on the pressure dropped to zero, I was on the highway so I drove about another mile to get off highway and once I got off my truck died. I had it towed to my house and I thought I blew my motor. So I started doing research here and found that the VCT's AND cam Phaser could be bad. so I replaced my VCT on driver side put it all back together it started and loud knock was gone. then after 5 mins it was back very loud knock!
So I shut it down and took apart the passenger side once I got the valve cover off I found the problem.... The bolt that holds the cam phaser in place snapped off and was riding along the camshaft. So I took that out and extracted remaining part of bolt. inspected my camshaft and it was really messed up. so I bought new Phaser and Camshaft. the camshaft just came in today and I am trying to put it back in. but the hole for the pin in the phaser doesn't line up and I cant spin the shaft to make it line up. should I spin the cam phaser? I marked the chain and the phaser is where it should be on chain, but with that bolt snapping off could that have thrown the timing off so my mark is no good? when I lay the camshaft in place it sits perfect and if I just move the phase over 2-3 links it will all fit together. Should I do that?
I have a 2012 Sonata, just last December I started hearing like a ticking noise as I was driving. At first I didn't think nothing of it as it stopped. a few days later and moving forward the noise becomes intermittent. I took it to the dealer several times and they couldn't hear it until I had a technician drive with me and he heard it. As they began to examine my car I was told that the noise is coming for the high pressure valve and it is normal. The thing is the car has never made this noise until last year.
View 2 RepliesMy 2011 F-150 Super crew eb has started to have a knock that comes from under the dash in the radio area. It doesn't occur every time it's started. It is 3 or 4 knocks that sound like a plastic gear slipping, then it stops. I am thinking something in the vent/defrost door. Is it vacuum operated or electronic? Any thoughts?
View 4 RepliesI have had my ecoboost for a couple months now. Overall I am very happy with it but I have noticed a shudder recently when accelerating and when coming to a complete stop at times. I only feel it when accelerating from a stop or when stopping completely. Kind of feels like something slips. I think I recall reading about this before on the 2011 and 2012s somewhere. What is causing this and is there a fix or is it just the way these trucks are?? I can deal with it but it is kind of annoying when driving in traffic.
View 1 Replies2014 IS350 ... having issues with loud ticking from engine? Sounds like it's coming from the engine valves. Lose valves maybe? My car only has 16k miles. But the ticking is annoying. I cant imagine the valves ticking that loud with such low miles. And it ticks even after warmed up. The oil is within normal range and still looks clean. I'm not due for an oil change for another 2k. (i change the oil every 5k). I am considering switching to sightly higher weight oil for the summer time.
