Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Transmission Won't Go Into Reverse
Oct 12, 2011
I got a 2004 F150 that won't go into reverse. All other gears work, including 4 wheel drive. I checked the linkage and it is working.

View 1 RepliesWell it seems the transmissions POOCHED. It feels like its binding especially in reverse, and makes a whining sound in park/neutral. I guess, I will take it to the trans shop tomorrow and hope for the best....

I have a problem now, the transmission do not go forward only reverse.
I have a 04 Explorer 4.0 4x4 with 130,000 mi. It all started about 3 months ago. The truck would neutral out while driving. After changing tranny fluid and filter, along with rear speed sensor the problem returned after driving 3-4 miles. After digging deeper I found the transfer case was bone dry and fried inside. Replaced the TC and check fluid level again. Back out of garage and drove the vehicle approx. 2 miles. Stopped to grab a coffee and left truck running. Returned to find I had no reverse or drive. This is after driving it to where I was. Towed truck back home.
I noticed the vehicle would start in gear. Replaced neutral safety switch ( grooves properly aligned ). Started truck, reverse lights come on when in reverse.. The problem now is when I put vehicle into R,N,D,3,2,1, the truck does one thing... REVERSE. All gears put truck into reverse, no forward movement at all. I attempted to replace safety switch a couple of weeks ago but was unable to remove the nut holding the lever on. 2 days I spent on that nut. Now I'm wondering if I did something inside the tranny when I was wrenching on that nut for 2 days?
We had 2 Trucks that had the reverse go out in the last month. What would be the cause ? Is there a defect in the Trans?

View 1 RepliesI have an '04 F150 with 160,000 miles, and I've never had any issues until yesterday. I bought it brand new in '04. It is my daily driver, and normal service and maintenance had been maintained. It has never towed anything, and was used to haul small loads when I remodeled my house. In the last 5 years it hasn't seen any workload. Saturday, I hauled large load of sand 7 miles with no issues. Yesterday, I was leaving work, and reverse was not working. The exact symptom is, going to Park to Reverse always works. Going from N,D,2,1 to Reverse never works. I'm hoping this is an easy fix, and not tranny related.
View 2 RepliesMy F-150 has started acting up again. About 2 months ago it randomly stalled a few times and I narrowed it down to the Fuel pump driver module which was band and I have since replaced. Truck ran fine up until the middle of this past week. Now it runs good at idle, but as soon as I put it into reverse, the engine stalls. I do know that my 4x4 isnt engaging due to a suspect vaccum leak. Could a vacuum leak be causing the stalling as well. The 4x4 not locking in issue predated the stalling issue.
View 4 RepliesI have a 08 Subaru 2.5i Impreza and until now I thought this was a fluke but it is happening more frequently this week. When I park my car I engage the the parking brake and put the shifter into first gear, turn the car off ... etc... When I go back to the car I depress the clutch, start the car, apply the brake and disengage the parking brake. I then proceed to shift to reverse to back out of my parking spot, here is where the problem lays. More often then not the car shifts to reverse and I am on my way but every so often the shifter refuses to go into reverse until I release and depress the clutch pedal. After that it drops into reverse and away I go.
View 4 RepliesFriend lost reverse and truck shakes at 35 and above seems like it needs a new transmission. What years are a match for this transmission and any other models trans match?
View 2 RepliesMy reverse lights do not work and it is not due to the bulbs. Guy at autozone said it is the neutral safety switch. Does this sound correct? And I have done work on my truck myself, is this a difficult fix? I went ahead and bought the part, but can take it back if too hairy.

I don't know if this all started right after I got back from towing a 3500# lathe + 2000# trailer back from Texas a couple weeks ago or if there might have been some slight symptoms before. I do know that this really got bad a couple days ago and I haven't driven the truck since then.
So, here's what is happening. I noticed a few days before that when I would back out of a parking space, the truck didn't seem to go right into reverse. It was as if it was in neutral, but as I was reaching to jiggle the gearshift lever, it would engage and I could back out just fine. All forward gears, and shifting, have been fine all along, including lockup. I kind of wondered if the shift linkage had somehow moved and was on the edge of being in the right spot, so I was going to have a look at it one evening soon. Then a couple days ago, I went to back out of a parking spot at work and it wouldn't go anywhere.
Just acted like it was in neutral. Put it in drive and it engaged just fine, then back to reverse and nothing for a few moments before it finally engaged. Then, as I was backing up, it acted like you might expect a limited slip that was not slipping to behave. But, that was right before I put it in drive and went home. After I got home, I tried it out some more and found that in reverse, it just wouldn't go anywhere unless the truck rolled a little bit. I don't know if the rolling really had anything to do with it or not, but the driveway is on a slight incline, so it happened, and then the transmission would engage. But, when it did start to back up, even straight, at first it acted like it was under a load, then when it started to move, it bucked really badly. Put it back in drive and all seems fine.
There are no codes set. Trans fluid is full, and doesn't smell or look bad. I've searched for reverse shudder, and other stuff, and there are threads about the TC, about no reverse at all, and a bunch of other stuff, but nothing like this that I found.
I have a 08 F-150 4x4 King ranch with 5.4L Duel fuel motor. Last year we were backing a trailer and the whole truck started shaking. Stopped, but it in forward and no problems, tried backing again and same thing. It did back up but shook worse with more gas.
We took it to a mechanic who said without even looking at it "Sounds like a reverse clutch, common problem" So we had them rebuild the trans, a few months later it did it again once but we were 300 miles from home. Since we could still back we did what we needed to do and drove home with no problems. Dropped it back at the mechanic who said he couldn't find anything and eventually had a yelling fight with my wife. We couldn't get it to happen again either until last week it did it again and she grabbed the camera to record it.
Took the truck back with the video, he had a mechanic look at it and said the transfer case mount bolts were loose, tightened them up which did get rid of a knock that we had since the trans rebuild and said that was the problem, it was binding and causing the shaking. This weekend did the same thing again.
Now the truck is back at the shop and only 100 miles or so left on the warranty (12m/12k). So after that long story my question is if the problem really was/is the reverse clutch or if there is something else wrong that he never fixed and was just intermittent enough that we let him get away with it this long?
Okay I have a 2006 F-150 5.4 60,000 miles , Never once had any problems. I have always done the oil changes myself using 5w-20 mobile super and an S2 STP oil filter. Today, I did a normal oil change and once i filled it up I checked the oil it one last time and I topped it off just right according to the dipstick. And I also checked it after letting engine idle for 5 minutes. I changed the fuel filter also ( first time doing) but no leaks. I drove about two miles down the road, turned around and when I put it into reverse it idled really rough. It almost sounded like a thrown rod.
The rpm's dropped to about 500. I put it into drive and gave it a little gas and then all was fine. Engine ran perfect. I reversed it at least 5 more times and it did it every time but always recovering when given a little gas. I also noticed that there is some oil splashed on the undercarriage like it was leaking going down the road. I checked the filter gasket and it was fine and intact. It idles great in park, drives great. Just reverse it dives down and vibrates like crazy.? After getting home I noticed that the oil level on the dipstick is a little less than a 1/4 inch over the correct level.
The reverse gear in my F150 has started slipping all of a sudden, with no noise or notice. All forwards gears are functioning properly. If I rev up the motor in reverse it seems like it wants to go, but I get the wrench light/safe mode and it now has a P0720 code. I've done some research and replaced the Output Speed Sensor and replaced the tansmission fuild and filter. I cleared the codes once before I changed the sensor, and now my reader indicated the the P0720 is "Pending". Do I have to keep trying to use reverse? Drive it more? Plus it looked like after driving it today that I might have overfilled the transmission.
View 2 RepliesHow to test reverse warning system sensors? My truck about 75% of the time, once i put it in reverse the system goes to off. I assumed a sensor, but can't find any major resistance differences in them.
View 9 RepliesI have an automatic 2004 f150 fx4 with a 5.4 engine. I just bought the truck and noticed the other day that when I shift into reverse, there is a 1-2 second delay. Sometimes it will shift quicker than other times. Drive seems to be a little more swift I think. Everything seems to run smooth and the shifting is very smoot other than the delay. Is this normal or what could be some of the causes. The previous owner has the ATF changed this pst summer and it looks and smells fine other than maybe having to much fluid.
View 2 RepliesI have a problem. My 2007 ford f150 4x4 5.4 triton engine starts to flutter and stalls when its in reverse, engine is warm, and I am backing up a trailer with about 5,000 lbs on it. It drives fine with or without towing. I did notice it does it with nothing behind it on occasion. Whats causing this?
View 2 RepliesFor our new pontoon with surge brakes I need to add reverse lights to the wiring harness to deactivate the surge brakes while backing up. What is the proper way of doing this? BTW this is on an 06 F150 XLT with factory 7 pin harness.
