Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Transmission Jolts While In O/D Around 50 - 70 MPH
Jan 26, 2011
My '04 Lariat 4x4 5.4L SCAB w/ 167k miles is giving me problems primarily while in O/D around 50-70 mph. When I lightly lean into the throttle either to slightly increase speed or maintain speed while going up an incline I get some jolting coming from the tranny. It's not a one time jolt when it downshifts but a repetitive jolt while staying in the same gear.
It doesn't happen until the engine is up to normal operating temperature and happens almost exclusively when O/D is engaged. It's thrown a code which I'm going to have pulled today while at lunch (will follow up with the code once I know what it is). When the check engine light has come on I can push the O/D button to go into 3rd gear and it will still shimmy the truck a bit but when I go back into O/D it seems to calm down.
I'm thinking it's s sensor and I'm aware there are a few that talk to the tranny. What could be causing it. It started late last summer but has progressively gotten worse. It's a daily occurrence and road conditions and outside temp don't appear to make it worse or better. One more thing to note is that the jolting is significantly worse when in 4x4 high which makes sense since it's affecting both the front and rear axles assuming it's coming from the tranny.

I have a 2001 F-150 4x4 SC with a 4R70W. As a a couple weeks ago the transmission (or so I think) is slipping. When I take off from a red light the truck is shuttering. I also can be driving along at 55-60 mph and the truck jolts and shutters. I was reading some other threads and some guys think it could be a misfire, but since mine does it from a stand still i don't think it is. Just throwing that out there because it could be a factor, but once again I don't know.

I just bought this car (2000 miles) and I have noticed that it shifts gears oddly (hard to describe) and I get thumps and jolts in the transmission at low speeds, parking lot driving, going from reverse to drive.
Any knowledge of this transmission and it is possible there is something wrong?

Recently, my aunt's 2004 Toyota Camry LE with the 16-Valve 2AZ-FE 2.4L has developed what seems like a major engine problem! Whenever my aunt drives it, she describes that it jolts and shakes above 50 MPH. Then, whenever she starts or drives it, it sounds like a dirt bike and/or moped. I took a look at the engine myself and have isolated the problem to a sound coming from the middle of the engine (near the heat shielding).

I have a 2004 f150 non heritage with a 5.4 its an ext cab lariat auto. It has 350,000 but has been well maintained. The truck runs perfect except sometimes I will hop in and start it up and when i take off it shifts through all the gears before 25mph and when i come to a stop it feels like it downshifts all at once and when i stop it will die. Again it only does this occasionally and the rest of the time runs A-1. This leads me to believe its an electronic error but it is not throwing any codes and cannot get it to replicate the symptoms for my mechanic.

Pulled transmission out and it needs to be rebuilt front to back. My motor is generally stock but I'm rolling on 37" tyres so I'm thinking a stall converter and a "performance" rebuild. Looked at "Monster in a box" from Monster Transmissions. Truck is used at tymes to haul cement and heavy bed loads.

I got a 2004 F150 that won't go into reverse. All other gears work, including 4 wheel drive. I checked the linkage and it is working.

2008 F150 Super crew 5.4 v8, bone stock. The truck was acting up with a rough idle and slight miss when in gear at a stop 2 weeks ago, loss of power going uphill. Changed fuel filter and filled up with premium and a can of sea foam. The truck straightened up after that, so I thought. Last Friday it dies in the road, cranks, but no fire.
Has to be the engine, had it towed to the local dealer and they get to look at it Monday afternoon, said the transmission fuse was blown and it keeps blowing new ones, it's in the transmission wiring. I am used to older trucks and was blown away transmission wiring will shut the truck down. I would think the wiring harness to the transmission would be simple enough to check out, can the wiring or solenoids in the tranny cause this?

How important is the fluid swap and service of the transmission service at 30k mile interval. I have my truck at the shop now getting it done but was just wondering how important to have it done. My truck is just ten months old and already been 30k miles in it.

Can't drive truck!!!

So last night my trans have out, going up a slight grade, all of a sudden the engine revved and I had no more 3rd gear. I've done some research, looks like rebuilding it is the only option. I've got my Mustang GT to drive in the meantime, so I am thinking of rebuilding it myself. The truck is an '07 F150 5.4 2WD.

Well it seems the transmissions POOCHED. It feels like its binding especially in reverse, and makes a whining sound in park/neutral. I guess, I will take it to the trans shop tomorrow and hope for the best....

I have a 2008 Ford Lariat F150 with 53k miles. The transmission seems like it slips at times. Here's the scenario. When I take off from a standstill and going through the gears at a normal acceleration pace, say I momentarily lighten the acceleration pace then try to resume. At that point, the transmission seems to slip momentarily, then bumps back into the pull mode. It feels like there is slack in the drivetrain until it re-engages, or like the lockup torque converter momentarily releases until the computer has time to react to the accelerator positioner calling for more. One guy said the transmission is, at that point, between two gears... either trying to decide to downshift or to upshift, but you can feel the surge in rpm momentarily until it decides ... then bump and your off and running again. If I push the O/D button, it stops doing it. What I can do? Because the dealer can't seem to get it to act up when they test drive it. It does it fairly regularly on me though.

I have an 07 with a 4r75e transmission that has developed a leak. The truck has 60,000 miles on it. I looked under the truck and it is not leaking from the pan. I plan to put on stands and get under it tomorrow to see if I can find the leak. Where I might check for the leak?

I have a 2004 4x4 with 305K on it. Never changed the transmission fluid and I think its slipping a bit.
Beentold that I should not change the fluid because the new fluid would somehow damage something and to just not worry about it.
So OK to change the fluid or not?

I have a problem now, the transmission do not go forward only reverse.

My 2005 4.2 L transmission slips in overdrive but I turn off overdrive and it stops slipping instantly. What could be the reason for this does this require an entire trans rebuild or is it an easy fix.

My transmission failed on me again last night, truck won't move (I still seem to have reverse). Was cruising down the road at 85km/h and Trans Failure came up with a P0720 (OSS sensor Cct.) and P0722 (output shaft speed sensor no signal) codes. The first time I only got a P0721 code.
This is the second time in 6 months. Last time I spend 3200 to get it rebuilt locally. i don't do any towing, I don't spin my tires etc. and I haven't taken it off pavement since it was rebuilt so I'm not sure why this is happening. I baby my truck.
I have the 4R70E in the truck now, will the 4R100 fit? It's suppose to be a heavier duty tranny correct? Where I can get one and if not where I could send mine to have it reinforced?

2005 F-150 5.4L RWD
I purchased this truck about 2 years ago, with about 70k miles. Previous owner had transmission work done, but I'm not sure if it was a rebuild, new, or refurbished. About 8 months ago I experienced hesitation, and frequent stalling when coming to a stop. Pulled the engine codes, and they said it was throttle body related. I thoroughly cleaned the throttle body assembly inside, with the battery disconnected, went through the idle re-learn process, and it drove fine for a few days. Took it into the shop, and they did a tune up and replaced several plugs and coils. Since then, it's run great.
A couple of weeks ago, a whining/buzzing noise was coming from the engine compartment, getting much louder as RPMs increased. Got the oil changed a week ago (it was overdue), and the tech at the quick lube shop said the noise was from the drive pulley(s), and that they should be replaced.
Today, I was waiting for the parking lot at work to open, sitting in park. I quickly switched to Drive, and the trans didn't seem to engage (Auto Trans). The engine revved, I let off the gas, and it then engaged and I scooted into a parking spot. After work, on the way home, there were similar issues at the beginning of the drive, mainly when slowing down/stopping/down-shifting. Most of the drive was on hwy, and I managed to get by okay going around 60 mph, with some spikes in RPM's occasionally when I would accelerate (no Tach, so I'm going by sound). Half way home on the high way, the O/D Off light starting quickly blinking, and the odometer screen read "TRANS FAULT". I managed to make it off of the highway, and stopped at the first red light, where the engine stalled. Turned it back on, put it in gear, and it drove fine for about 5-10 minutes on back roads, with no lights/notices. The last 2 miles home I experienced a lot of slipping, and high revs. When I backed into my parking spot, there was noticeable leaking... Trans fluid was leaking fairly quickly. I hadn't noticed any trans fluid leaking before today... I went out to run the engine and take a short trip to warm up the fluid to get a reading, but it wouldn't engage in Forward or Reverse at all. Pulled the dipstick out, while "cold", and there was nothing... I'm assuming that it's drained drastically, and is extremely low or gone.

I found that my transmission was low on oil but couldn't find a leak. What I did find is that the seal in the transfer case was letting trans fluid transfer into it and then it would leak out the out put seal. I purchased the new seal and gasket and repaired it myself in about 3 hours. I removed the rear drive shaft and removed the front drive shaft from the transfer case alone or you can take it out completely if you want.
Drained transfer case unplugged wiring and one vacuum line. Unbloted from trans and removed using trans jack. The bolts are not the easiest to get to. i used a 3/8 ratchet to break them loose then used a stubby 3/8 to get them out because they are around 2 inches long. Once down I had to jack up the truck to get it out from under it. I removed the old seal and installed new one cleaned everything up and installed with a new gasket.

I have a 2004 XLT supercrew 4x4 with about 150,000 miles with the 5.4 motor. I noticed that when entering an interstate at around 50-55 mph it feels like the tranny slips. There is a jerk, jerk, jerk than it stops, it doesn't do it at any other speeds and only getting on interstates. Runs fine in town. No lights on the dash or codes, fluid level is normal and clean. I did have a caliper sticking but it was replaced and it's still doing the jerk, jerk, jerk. Could it be U joints?
