View 8 RepliesF150 2007 5.4 tapping from idle to infinity driver side wheel wellI have read thought a ton of these post and my head is spinning I have used 10w30 from 10,000 to 100,000 with lucas then 20w50 with lucas current 150,000 miles changed oil every 5000 +/- a few It taps when I first crank up cold or hot, it taps at 0 degrees or 200 degrees, it tapps at 800 rpms or when im really mad at 5800 rpms and never stops it is really loud at the driver side wheel well its not the injectors, coils, plugs, exhaust i have been all over, under, and around the truck hot, cold, day, night, and even threatened to empty my .45 clip on it and it refuses to tell me what is going on and cannot found a resolution I could deal with it but pulling up to the drive through window and it echoing back at me has me ready to order a create motor.
View 6 RepliesI've got an 06 F150 5.4, and its making some noise. It has a constant tapping noise that can be more easily heard when I'm attempting to order my fries at the drive thru. The issue is, I'm having some difficulty identifying it. The tapping noise is very noticeable at idle, and becomes sickeningly loud at approximately 1000 rpm (in neutral) and almost disappears after 1200 rpm. i know for sure that it is not the normal noisy injectors, and it sounds too distinct to be a lash adjuster or lifter. I have not been around a truck with bad cam phasers to know what it sounds like. I don't want to start throwing parts at it until i know where to look.
View 14 RepliesI just bought an '04 F150 from a friend. It has 250K miles on it. When I got the truck there were no tapping noises coming from the engine. Now that I changed the oil, at start up till about 5 miles down the road, I hear the tapping noise. I put Castrol high mileage 5W-20 in it. Could it just be the oil I'm using or something more expensive?
View 9 RepliesI have a loud tapping noise in my 07 5.4 triton. when its really cold on the first start up I cant here the noise but when it gets warm its tap tap tap again.

Recently I got a flashing 'Check Engine' light and a rough running engine (along with a tapping noise) when I was passing someone (and pulling a trailer). I retrieved codes 300, 304, & 305. I can't swear to it, but I think the tapping noise started at the same time as the coil problem.
I replaced coils #4 & #5 (later that same day) and the engine smoothed back out but the tapping noise is still hanging around. The noise speeds up at higher RPM's and doesn't go away if I shift into neutral. Oil level and pressure are fine and I only use Motorcraft 5W-20 and Motorcraft filters (and change the oil every 5K miles).
Not sure if this is relevant: I think I have bad valve guide seals (blue smoke after long idles) but no other problems that I am aware of. It sort of sounds like a lifter, but is there a good way to pin it down? Is it possible that this tapping is related to the bad coils?
As I was driving home from vacation the other day while towing my boat I started noticing a tapping sound coming from the passenger side. Sounds like an exhaust leak or a lifter. Can't tell. Sounds louder under acceleration. It's a 2009 5.4 with 70k. Just had ford do oil change last week. Oil level is good.
View 11 Replies2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT... My brother took my truck off road yesterday by himself and when I left there was a noise on the passenger side. It sounds like slowly tapping an empty barrel, it ranged from a low noise and a little louder. Randomly while driving... Bumps in the road wasn't the problem or turns didn't make it either. I found a thin stick with burrs stuck underneath and took it out but when I left driving again it still made that noise. It might vary by speed but I doubt it I only drove a couple times and that's all I perceived so far. I am wondering if I should be driving it at all now? until I can get it looked at I also called my brother and asked if he hit any bumps or holes real hard but he said no hoping he's not lying to me.
View 1 RepliesMy car ( 2.4L 2008 Camry ) is making a tapping noise while in gear and stopped. If I rev it slightly, start moving, or move it out of gear the noise will go away.
I was able to trace the noise to the hard pipes attached to the radiator for the transmission cooler. In particular the ~6in one that runs towards the center of the radiator.
A part of the body directly below the hard pipe was slightly bent up and hitting the hard pipe.
A quick way to verify this is the root cause of your noise is by getting a buddy (or chocking) the wheels with parking brake engaged then put the car in gear and manipulate the radiator. Be very careful when doing this I am not responsible for property damage or bodily harm due to this troubleshooting technique.
Pressing down on the top rubber isolators or putting some pressure on the fan shroud should stop the tapping noise.
On my car I persuaded the metal and added some foam strips to prevent to noise. If I press down on the radiator it sometimes will comes back. If this bothers me more I will need to pull the radiator and do a more thorough examination.
Just purchased a 2008 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport with <60K miles for my son. The car is in great shape (body/interior) EXCEPT it probably needs a "new"/rebuilt engine. It started making a tap-tap-tap noise and the mechanic that looked at it said it was an internal engine noise; that they would not tear apart the engine to determine the cause, but install a rebuilt engine ...
View 4 RepliesI've got a 2001 Accent 1.5 liter 5 speed. Car has 105,500 miles. Whenever the car is running, it makes an irritating tapping noise somewhere on the left side of the motor. I've been told that it sounds like the timing belt, but the car runs perfectly, doesn't miss. The tapping used to go away 30 seconds to a minute after starting it, but now it's constantly there and slightly louder. The noise goes with the rpms. When the rpms are higher, the tapping is faster. I've also noticed some loss of power. I recently added some octane booster to the fuel but noticed no difference. My uncle told me it may be a main bearing starting to go out but the tapping does not have a metallic tone of any.

View 4 Replies2005 ford f150 Fx4 So last Friday I started hearing a grinding noise from the passenger side front of my truck. sounded like metal on metal. So I started rooting around and noticed that bottom ball joints were shot. so replaced bottom ball joints on both side. I aslo replaced wheel bearing hub assembly on both sides, still heard the grinding. So I noticed that both axles were slinging grease, so I replaced them on both sides.
Still heard the grinding noise. So then I removed everything from the passenger side and noticed that the locking hub actuator was grinding both axle and the wheel bearing hub. So I just got done replacing that on the passenger side, put it all back together, and still grinding noise ringtones free. Also replaced the 4wd solenoid that they said gets water in it, and I replaced the check valve. And I put new Rotors and breaks. What it could be?
Every time I brake, there is an awful grinding sound in the rear of my truck. It doesn't seem to be affecting the brake strength, however something is obviously wrong. I have looked at the brake pads and they seem to be in good shape. I am a mechanical misfit, but I hate getting ripped off by other people at the brake shops.

I recently got Gibson Performance Headers on my 2006 Ford F150. And when you cold start it or just start it period it has a odd ticking noise on the passenger side.
View 3 RepliesI've been fighting with this noise for probably about 4 months now. I've replaced my strut mounts and strut bearings thinking they were shot, but this didn't even begin to stop the noise. I seem to be hearing it whenever the weight of the car is shifted. The best way to describe the noise is a tapping or high pitched thumping. It's definitely coming from the right corner of the car. Also, I have been hearing a grinding noise from that side when turning the wheel sharply to the left.
I was thinking this was because my brakes needed to be changed and the indicators were scrapping whenever I turned the wheels. I work full time and go to school, so I don't have a lot of time to figure out what's going on. That's why I'm posting here, so I can maybe get some insight before I have time to look at it this weekend. By the way, I have jacked the car up and shook the wheel to check the ball joint and wheel bearing. The wheel was very tight and I didn't feel any play at all.
Ok, so I have a 1992 GMC Suburban with a 350 TBI with a full dual exhaust and long pipe headers. The problem I'm having is that there is a tapping noise that comes from the driver's side of the engine when you push the gas pedal down. It only makes the noise when you push the pedal down more than about a quarter of an inch. I have tested it down hill with the transmission out of overdrive and the rpms up and there is no tapping. I'm thinking it might be pre-ignition in one of the cylinders but how to test for it other than just disconnecting plug wires one at a time until it stops. Much more I don't know what would be causing it to happen if that is the problem.
View 10 Replies1.8T... Finding the source of a weird clicking noise I keep hearing. Ever since I changed the motor mounts (although I am not sure if this has anything to do with it) after the engine warms up or after some driving, when the engine is idling I hear a clicking or tapping noise coming from the passenger side of the engine bay. It doesn't seem to tied to the rpm; I can rev the engine a little without the tapping going faster, and when a shift between neutral or park or drive the tapping will briefly slow down almost to a stop before going back to its regular pace. After the revs get above 1500 or so it seems to stop.
View 6 RepliesI recently bought a 2005 f150 fx4. With about 125000 on it. It started this noise coming from the passenger side. Does it while driving only. It sounds just like the casting noise on a fishing rod. What this could be. Not sure which tire its coming from. Maybe breaks? Doesn't change when breaks are applied though.
View 11 RepliesA very odd hum from the rear (2005 f150 4.2) that occurs at all speeds. Low speed it occurs regardless of load on the drive line. At higher speeds it only happens when i have considerable load on the drive line. All bearings in the diff were replaced less than a year ago when the main pinion bearing went and the diff gears were in pretty dam good condition. Wheel bearings are not getting warm to indicate a wheel bearing. And when i let off the throttle it hums for a few seconds and dissipates as the tension on the drive line goes away. I even looked at the carrier bearing assy and it seems to be in good working order. I live pretty dam far from any type of service so i was just curious before i start trying to trouble shoot this any further.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2004 F150 XLT super crew cab. I bought this used with around 99,000 miles on it. There is a plastic / rubber two piece cowl panel between the hood and the windshield. There are little rubber type material tabs on the outer edge between the fender and the cowl panel. They are there on my truck but they have started to come off. I have noticed that when I get up to roughly 45MPH and over I get a flapping wind noise on the drivers side of the vehicle only. I thought it was that little rubber flap because it came off completely and the noise got a little worse. I super glued it back on but the noise is still the same.
