Truck shifts great from 2 to 4h to 4l and back to 2. However, at random times - any speed - usually when slowing down - I hear/feel something engage and there is usually a ratchet sound. I figured out its the 4x4 - if I switch to 4h then back to 2 quick, it stops. What the heck.

View 3 RepliesFor the last little while I have been having an issue with the 4wd in my 2006 F-150 with about 93k on the clock. Sometimes it would engage when I switched to 4H/4L and other times it wouldn't. A friend of mine works at a Ford dealership and said it could be the vacuum solenoid on the firewall going bad. So I bought a new one and as I removed the old one, noticed debris in one of the inlets. So I cleaned that out and neither old or new solved the problem. Then I went through ALL of the vacuum lines and found some debris in parts of them....
Cleaned them all out and still nothing. Then I got to thinking it may be the ESOF motor on the transfer case. Checked to make sure there was power to the plug, which there was. Removed the motor and turned switch, and the motor seemed to be working. Reattached the motor and the 4wd would engage/disengage without problem. Pretty much everywhere I went I would check it and it worked fine . Then all of a sudden it didn't . So I took the motor off, turned selector and it worked fine. No issues yesterday at all.
So, I am not sure if it is the motor going bad or not. Could there be a contact problem? I talked to a mechanic this morning and he told me to drive around with it in 4H for a while because more times than not it doesn't get used enough. I'm just not sure what could be going on...am I missing something?
I have a 2007 ford f150 and the 4wd will not engage at all checked vacuum lines they all look intact wondering if it could be the IWE solenoid and is there any way to test the IWE solenoid ...
View 5 RepliesI have a 2005 f150 and it will not engage the front hubs. It is a manual shift on the fly not electric. I have done some checking and this is what i have found so far. Pull the lever into 4H, dash light comes on, IWE's do not lock onto axle. Same for 4L. The transfer case does come in when lever is pulled into either 4H or 4L. Front end up on jack stands, engine off. Turn either wheel and axle turns with it as it should. Start engine, turn either wheel and it is free from axle, as it should be. so there is vacuum going to IWE when engine is on. Not sure what to check next. Is the vacuum solenoid on the firewall bad?? Is there something not getting activated when i pull the floor lever back?

Running down the road at 44-MPH. Pulling 5,000lbs. Engine died just after turning on the air conditioner. (Not sure this is relevant.)
Would not start. Turned the key - the starter would engage, but the engine would only turn maybe a quarter turn. Try it again engine turns. Try it again and now it only clicks. So, I
-Replaced the battery. Same symptom. Will only turn the engine 1/4 turn.
-Replaced the starter. Same symptom.
-Checked oil. Clean. No Water. No gas smell. (200 miles since last oil change)
-Checked coolant. Clean. No Oil.
-Charged the new battery and tried again. Same symptom.
-Checked and cleaned all grounds and battery cables. Same symptom.
-Checked that the transmission is shifting though the gears. Seems fine.
-Removed serpentine belt. Check all pulleys, and accessories that are driven by the belt. Everything spins quietly and freely.
-I put the truck in neutral and tried to spin the crank pulley with a 2 breaker bar. It wouldn't budge.
Am I missing something? I fear the engine is seized or hydro-locked. If hydro-locked, wouldn't I see signs in the fluids? Can the pistons be hydrolocked with fuel? Not sure what to try next.
2006 Lariat 4x4 Troubleshooting. My front wheels wont engage when I select 4H or 4L. No dash lights are ever lit.
I read up and understand how the system works and plan to replace the solenoid, transfer case motor and both hub actuators. I swapped out the solenoid and wanted to test that it was functioning properly so I followed the video below:

With the engine running and selector switch at 2WD, I pull the vacuum lines off and can feel vacuum at the supply. I then hook up just the supply line up (to the bottom port) and expect to feel vacuum at the other solenoid port (top port - what I would call the outlet) and cannot feel any vacuum.
This has halted my repair attempts as I am not convinced this is functioning and would pull in the actuators if they were functional. I know it's a small vacuum from a small orifice but I would think I should feel it by hand, no?
The solenoid's electrical connector is plugged in during this as well. I get the same performance with the old solenoid and the new. If I bypass the solenoid I can feel vacuum at the front wheel hubs.
Should I try a third solenoid? Seems unlikely I would have 2 bad ones...No OBDII codes at all. What to try next?
I have a 2005 F150 113,000 FX4. When I put the truck into 4x4 high the light comes on and the front driveshaft engages. Same with 4x4 low. the problem is that the hubs never actually lock. When I move forward in some mud or wet grass the right front hub makes this grinding noise like it is actually trying to engage but never does. Same with 4x4 low. I do not have any weird noises when I drive in 2wd.
View 6 RepliesI have an automatic 2004 f150 fx4 with a 5.4 engine. I just bought the truck and noticed the other day that when I shift into reverse, there is a 1-2 second delay. Sometimes it will shift quicker than other times. Drive seems to be a little more swift I think. Everything seems to run smooth and the shifting is very smoot other than the delay. Is this normal or what could be some of the causes. The previous owner has the ATF changed this pst summer and it looks and smells fine other than maybe having to much fluid.

View 1 RepliesI have a 2004 FX4 4x4 ... Four wheel drive is not working!!!!! Turn the dash switch to 4High or 4Low and the lights come on in my dash gauge cluster. So my 4x4 lights come on as if the 4x4 is working but my front wheels do not turn. What I have done:
Drove the truck forward while I watched the front drive shaft going from the transfer case to the front differential. Did this in 2WD and then in 4WD high. While driving forward in 2WD the front drive shaft did not move. Once put into 4WD high and driven forward the front drive shaft was turning. I guess this tells me that my transfer case and shift motor are working?
I jacked up my driver side front wheel and turned the tire by hand while the truck was running in 2WD. The tire spun freely and the CV axle (half shaft) did not turn. Then turned 4x4 dash switch to 4WD high and turned the tire again by hand and the CV axle turned while turning the tire. I guess this indicates that the IWE actuator was working....I guess???
Repeated the process above for the front passenger side of the truck and the tire would always spin freely regardless if in 2WD or 4WD. I could not get the CV axle to turn while spinning the tire on the passenger side when the truck was running and switched to 4WD
I checked the vacuum solenoid near the battery mounted on the firewall. The vacuum line supplying vacuum to solenoid was working and pulling vacuum. I did a series of test in conjunction with the dashboard 4x4 selector and the Vacuum Solenoid seemed to be working properly.
Crawled under the truck while the engine was running and pulled the vacuum line off the nipples of each IWE Actuators (drive and passenger side) put my finger over the lines and felt decent vacuum at each end of each vacuum line.
So dash switch and 4x4 light works stays on solid and bright does not flicker
Vacuum solenoid and vacuum lines seem to be working
Transfer case and shift motor seem to be working
Driver side IWE actuator seems to work
Front passenger side Actuator does not seem to be working??? Why I am so confused about this is because in HOURS of Internet research it seems that this Actuator is not allowed to engage by vacuum pressure. When I disconnect the vacuum line to the passenger side actuator I expected to hub to lock, but it did not, the tire would turn but the CV axle wouldn't? If I replace the passenger side IWE actuator will this fix my four wheel drive? Or is there something else I am missing??
Have 2005 F150 5.4L 4WD Unit is trying to engage on all left hand curves and occasionally on straightaways, it has been doing this for about 1 month on left hand curves but just the last week on straightaways when it does it on straights you almost have to stop the tuck before it quits, has 70,000 miles and never been abused.
View 1 RepliesJust recently replaced the driver side 4wd actuator. When testing the system to see if it was working, I noticed that in 2wd everything seemed to be in order (wheel spun without the half shaft, no grinding noises on test drive, seemed good to go).
However, when I switched to 4hi, the dash light "4HI" would come on but the wheel still spun freely without the half shaft. When the truck was off, the wheel and half shaft spun together as they should when vacuum is released from the actuator. When I switched to 4lo, the dash light did not come on and the check engine light came on. Pulling codes revealed P0171 and P0174.
Could these codes be caused by a bad solenoid? Is the solenoid not switching the vacuum off and that's my issue? Are there other possibilities?
I'm having issues with my a/c blowing randomly warm air. At idle (stop lights, heavy traffic) the cold air will kick off but the fan will remain constant. Once I'm back up to full speed, the cold air will come back. It also works if I turn the a/c and fan off for a few minutes and turn it back when I'm at highway speed. I've recharged it and when it blows cold it will freeze me out. I'm thinking its a possible compressor issue?

I am having very random overheating for last few weeks. Started randomly one day in stop n go traffic. Thought maybe struck tstat so replaced it. Same thing...replaced water pump, fan clutch, serpentine belt, coolant reservoir cap since then. During all those replacement I flushed system with garden hose. Burped system to best of my knowledge. Still overheats randomly. Seems to happen every day now at hot times (100*). I drive around all day for work so been watching it closely. Temp gun runs 190* on tstat housing at operating temp. When it was rising up in temp I pulled over and temp gun read 200 ish.... it is in fact getting hot. Any freaking clues? Oh and have pressure tested good....combustion test good...
My sons 05 F150 is randomly dying during low idle. We removed and cleaned the TB and cleaned the MF sensor. For example, if he is coming up to a stop or slowing down, the truck will die, but starts right back up. So far no CEL and truck seems to idle and run fine, just ever so often will die.
Anything to check on the 5.4s
About a month ago, I was driving 50 mph in my 06 screw on a dirt road. There was an old wood bridge that was not as flush as I was expecting. Jolted the truck pretty good but it kept on trucking. However, a few seconds after the jolt, the power to the AC cut out. All I had to do was turn the AC to "off" then back on and it'd start working fine. Over the last month, the power randomly cuts out, but will go back on after I switch to "off" then back on. It's happened maybe 3 or 4 times since The Big Jolt.
View 6 RepliesHaving a misfire problem I can't track down. First issue was random cylinder 8 misfire code. Checked everything, nothing obvious. Cleared code, problem stopped and engine ran fine. Then came back, cylinder 8 misfire. Swapped coil with #5 but problem did not return. Since I assumed it would come back, I went ahead and bought Accell supercoils and new Motorcraft plugs and replaced them all (120k miles, no broken plugs ). Truck ran great on the test drive! Then it sits overnight and bam, cylinder 5 misfire as soon as I start it next morning. Then after messing with it I get cylinder 5 bad coil (code 355 I think). Put one of the Ford factory coils back back on #5, no change and still misfiring. New plug, new coil on all cylinders... Why did it move from #8 to #5? If it was an in injector, seems it would still be #8 since I did not mess with those.
