View 6 RepliesI am looking for info regarding motor swap. I blew the motor in my truck a couple weeks ago (5.4L Triton). She froze solid going down the HWY pulling my boat. I purchased a motor from a wrecking yard with~ 70k miles on it. I decided to do the swap myself and have run into a dilemma. In order to un-mate the trans from the motor the torque converter nuts need to be removed. There is an access port where you access the nuts one at a time. You must roll the engine over to bring each nut into view. This is where I am stuck. The motor is seized solid and will not turn over by hand even with a socket and a cheater bar on the main crank pulley. Do I need to remove the oil pan and/or the heads to figure out how it's stuck (pretty sure it ate a valve)?
View 1 RepliesI am struggling with it, and need to get it done - by myself, as I can't afford a service job. I am handy, and comfortable doing it, But I am confused about how to get into the blower housing.
View 4 RepliesI'm looking to purchase an 04 f150 but this issue has been bugging me. What are the odds of the can phaser failing and destroying the 5.4 3v motor? I'd be really unhappy if I bought a truck only to have a pile of parts a few thousand miles down the road. I'm seriously considering just looking for a low mileage 01-03.
View 1 RepliesI was driving my truck and smelled a bit of burning oil pulled over to see what it was when I stopped the truck died and said check gauges everything looked fine but I noticed that it had puked oil on top of the motor around the number 1&2 coil packs and also 5&6 coil packs.. 2005 f150 5.4 ...
View 4 RepliesI have an 04 F150 Lariat with the 5.4. I get alot of noise out of the top of the motor. I hear lots of stories of sludge issues, is that the problem or do I need to have the motor gone through? the knock is not horrible but when the motor is warm the noise is pretty apparent!
View 3 RepliesI need to replace the motor mounts on my truck. Is there any special tools or tricks I will need before I get half way into it and find myself in a bind? Oh yeah it's a 5.4L
View 1 RepliesI have 07 sscrew with 5.4. 93,000 miles. At start up truck runs perfect. After 20-30 minutes of running motor will start to start running rough at low rpm. Diesel sound. I can rev up and motor clears up and idles fine. Should I replace VCT solenoids? Or phasers? Or both at one time??
View 14 RepliesI have a question about my 2007 F150 4x4 with the 5.4L. It has a ticking noise sound coming from somewhere around the motor, but it's not there till the motor has warmed up. It almost sounds like a exhaust leak, but I'm not sure. What it might be, or what to look for?
View 11 RepliesMy truck seams to have developed a whine. It gets louder with increased RPM. Sounds like its coming from the motor, specifically the front of the motor, maybe one of the pulleys? Water pump??? Alternator??? Im not sure but Im about to head out on a 2800 mile round trip pulling a heavy load and want my truck to be ready for the trip...? It sounds like its gotten louder in the last couple weeks but I think its just because I had a new manifold installed on one side and the truck is quieter making this seam louder.... But I don't know if I should be worried about it.. I don't want to waste money (right before a big trip) chasing a noise if its not something that is an issue..
View 6 RepliesI need a new engine for my 2004 SOHC 5.4 3v F150. Without sounding like a dumb question, what engines can I use? All I've heard about this engine is that it was a horrible one. I can vouch for that personally. I will be looking for a crate engine soon.
View 2 RepliesJust picked up a high mile f-150 (146,000) 4x4 light not coming on. Jumpered out the vacuum solenoid first, nothing. Then found out I could try to tap on the actuator motor at transfer case. it worked,. Just wondering if i keep exercising the actuator motor, if it will continue to work, sounds like the previous owner did not put it in 4x4 for a long time. Also, if needed, where is a good place to purchase the replacement actuator motor? If this truck has heated seats ( it is a lariat), where is it controlled from? .... Seems to ride a little rougher than I expected. New tires, but it seems a little harsh. I have an f-350 as well. It seems to ride just about as good.
View 3 RepliesGetting these codes what they mean or need to do ..to get rid of them...p0022, p0171, p0174, p0183, p0340, p0300, p0316, p2006 did timing n plugs fuel filter n gas filter getting very bad gas mileage it runs good but here a ticking in motor at idle and more as u accelerate, running rough....
View 7 RepliesI have a new style 2004 F150 XLT supercrew with a 4.6. Well, I just hit 300,00 miles earlier this week. The truck has performed pretty much flawlessly over the years (and still does). I've replaced front hubs, IWE's, brakes, fluids, etc, but have NEVER opened up the engine. Is it time to replace the timing chain?
First thought is ,yes, like 50,000 miles ago, but... It has some dents and dings and the rust is getting to it. There is 300,000 on the transmission also... Virtually no residual value- If it strands me on the road, it's time for a new truck.
On the other hand, it only burns a little over a quart at 3000 mile change intervals, the transmission seems strong. I just shampooed the cloth interior and detailed it. The thing looks great from the vantage point of the steering wheel.
No engine issues at all- no rattling, etc.
Looking for any pictures or directions on replacing the intake manifold on the 2004 F150, 5.4. Got all the parts with the pulgs, and ignition coils.
View 6 RepliesYesterday I had to jump start my truck twice, after driving 200 miles then this morning, it still wouldn't start. Likely time for new battery being on original battery since new. Before I go over to local Sears, checking out the Diehards. Any particular brands?
View 5 RepliesI've just begun to replace my front struts (Monroe quick strut pre-assembled). The thing is, the top bearing plate bolts and the lower mounting point are out of alignment by 90 degrees. The included directions say they can be rotated but gives no procedure and they do not just "turn" easily obviously. How to rotate them to fit??
View 3 RepliesToday I decided to do some maintenance on the truck as it needed an oil change and some other unrelated misc stuff.
1. I seafoamed the engine thoroughly. I bought two cans of this stuff, half of a can went into the fuel, another half can in through the brake booster vacuum hose, and I dumped a full can of into the oil. Took it for a 30 minute drive, let the ol' gal smoke as it usually does on a seafoam, and then changed the oil. No noises, I noticed immediately improvement in acceleration.
2. Upon intial startup after the oil change, I thought the motor was coming apart. It was only for about two seconds, (i was counting to make sure) if it didn't have oil pressure and no noise by 3, I was shutting it off. It hasn't done it since.
Is it possible I just knocked some crap loose in the heads causing the oil drain a lot faster into the pan than I expected? I'll try it again in a few hours after everything has cooled off and oil has drained back into the pan, but I wanna make sure I didn't damage anything. Still drives good, no problems, no noises since.
The last oil change I did, I didn't do a Seafoam, but I figured with winter coming it's a good idea to get her running in top form. I used Pennzoil Platinum 5w20, with a Motorcraft oil filter for those wondering.
Truck has 133K on the clock, and it's had the slight cam phaser tick since I've purchased it, no other problems. I bought it almost a year ago.
Looking for a link for a novice to see how to replace the front struts on my 07? I'm thinking I'm capable of getting them out, but will take them to a shop to compress the spring and do the switch.
View 3 RepliesHow to access the plugin for the 3rd brake light, cant seem to find it from the top, do I need to remove the headliner?
View 2 RepliesWhile driving home my yellow wrench light came on and I had no power at the pedal, even though the engine was idling smoothly. This happened with no warning and went away when I turned the truck off and restarted it. About 4 miles later it did it again. I immediately went to a nearby dealership only to find out my electronic throttle body needs replaced. Needless to say at this time of year 500+ dollars is not readily available, although I need my vehicle for work.
I do not know a thing about ETB's but did a little research online and found many aftermarket ones at a much better price than Ford's(surprise). My question I guess is what are my alternatives to factory replacement? Can I remove and clean this component or replace it with something of better quality? I'm not into high performance with my truck but if I could get a little better throttle response or gas mileage I'm all ears. My truck is a 2004 Supercrew 4x4 XLT w/ 5.4 Triton. Around 74,000 miles and well taken care of. Miles are nearly all highway.
