I have a 2004 f150 4x4, When I put it in four wheel drive everything fine until I make a sharp turn. It's not a little wheel hop its a loud clunk that feels like the tire comes off the ground. I changed the cv axle from the side that seemed to be doing it but it didn't work. Could it be the actuator?

I have recently purchased a ski boat and lately when towing my boat and coming to a stop I feel as light movement coming from the rear of the truck that feels like something slides forward slightly. When I accelerate "it" slides back and if I accelerate quickly, "it" makes a loud clank noise.
I have ruled out hitch, receiver, ball, anything from the boat/trailer etc... It is coming from the transfer case/ spare tire area under the truck and it only appears to do it (or to where it is noticeable) while towing the boat.
I have an 04 F150 5.4. Anyway drove truck about 200 miles this weekend. When I got back home, unloaded truck, noticed a fluid leak on the ground in the rear of truck. Upon further inspection, appears to be leaking from where the driveshaft meets the rear axle...looks like there's a gasket or yoke in the rear of the U joint? a little fluid dripped down and ran down to the lower portion of the "pumpkin" and made a quarter size oil patch in front of my house.
I would have definitely noticed such a stain before, since I park in the same spot at home and work every day. I drove to work today (14 miles) and looked under the truck for 15 minutes after I parked, don't see any drip, but do see remnants of a leak all over the front part of the rear axle. No way has any fluid leaked on the ground before, I 100% would have noticed a stain.
Thoughts on a fix for this? I had the clutch packs redone about 3 years ago under warranty, truck has 88k miles. No shudder when I drive from the rear axle, I'm assuming there is fluid in the rear gears, as a substantial leak I for sure would have seen on the ground. leak is 100% NOT coming from the seal on the rear axle, but in front of it where the shaft meets the axle. Possible that driving on the highway at 75MPH for 2 hours straight caused this leak, as my drive to work is mostly stop and go, both ways.
So when it rains sometimes my ABS will go off till I drive it down the road a bit... Where is the location of the ground wire for this thing? I've checked up under it and no wires are cut or burnt... just wonder where this thing grounds to... if I can find that I may be able to clean it and fix the sensor.... because something makes me believe the sensor isn't bad, because some times it works for a half mile or so... before it goes back on.
View 6 RepliesMy 2007 F150 5.4L would not crank at all the other morning. After checking the battery, I discovered that the ground wire to the starter was completely frayed and broken off right at the eyelet connector to the starter. I spliced it back together and the truck fired right up.
However, the check engine light suddenly appeared and I got a P0453 code which apparently indicates a high reading at the fuel pressure sensor. The CEL never appeared until the broken wire happened. I took a quick look at the fuel pressure sensor and wiring and nothing appears to be obviously broken.
One other thing I've noticed for a few weeks is a miss under load while driving. I have not seen any codes at all for the miss. I was leaning toward replacing the coil overs but now I'm wondering if the miss is related to the fuel pressure sensor.
I found a loose blue/white ground wire in my engine compartment. Where this exactly needs to be ground ed to? Been having dash cluster light issues also.
View 2 RepliesI just installed my 2.5" leveling kit. The drivers side went really easy. The passenger side was VERY difficult getting the strut back in without a spring compressor. I got it though after some prying.
Now when I drive straight down the road, she does great. When I turn left, she does fine. When I turn right, it feels like the wheel is wobbling off.
Most of what I have read, people are having wobbles at 60+ MPH. Mine does this at any speed.
What did I do wrong? What is wrong with the truck? Does the leveling kit need to go? What can I do to fix this.
When driving my 2006 F150 it drives real smooth until I hit 50, then it feels like I'm driving on a slightly bumpy road, once I hit 55, smooths out again. Only drives strange at 50 mph. Other speeds smooth as glass.
View 3 RepliesI have an 06 Lincoln MK LT with 147K miles. Just recently when it went into overdrive it was like I shifted into neutral. Pushed the overdrive off button and it drove just fine although no 3rd gear (overdrive). what do I need to do here other than paying for new tranny.

Over the last few weeks I've noticed that when the truck has been parked for even a short time, when I start to move out I am getting a thumping noise from the rear, almost sounds and feels as though I am driving over small speed bumps, but once i get going it seems fine. View 2 RepliesIve got a 04 f350 that after u shift into 4hi or 4lo when u accelerate it it makes loud clunk noise in fwd or reverse hi or lo. With hubs unlocked it still clunks. Have checked, wheel bearings, axle U-joints, and driveshaft joints all good. So I am thinking I've got issues in t-case. Popped drain plug out and wow that dex merc 4 looks nasty. So thinking I need exploded view of transfer case.

View 8 RepliesI have a 04 4.6 f150 4x4. I have had some off road wear on the truck but put a stop to it here recently. I have replaced ball joints , struts , sway bar linkage , hubs , and now have a clunking sound going over every bump no matter the speed. Everything is tight underneath while stopped, other than the front driveshaft. It seems to have too much play to me? What it could be ???
View 8 RepliesI've got a lifted 2006 F150 crew cab lariat and I understand mileage is poor 10-11 per mile. 35" tires under a pro comp 6" lift. I have changed out my plugs twice last year and am still very under powered. What else can i do? I also have a clunk when i accelerate, sound like the rear end or drive line possibly. Had my transfer case replaced recently by ford and don't remember the noise prior.
View 11 RepliesWell this weekend I'm doing quite a bit of work to the truck. My tires and exhaust got delivered last night, now I'm just waiting on the leveling kit. Here's my issue:
For a little while now (5k-ish miles) going in and out of overdrive the tranny makes a clunk noise during the shift. Time to change the tranny fluid and filter? I am making a trip up north on Sunday and don't want to have the tranny the bed on the way.
On saturday I am doing the leveling kit (2"), brakes, exhaust (MBRP), and new tires (325/60r20 Terra Grapplers). Should I go ahead and do the tranny fluid and filter while I'm at it, or just wait till I get back. I am figuring on about 2k miles throughout the trip.
Yesterday my 5 year old daughter was "driving" my 07 S-cab 4x4 while I was installing steps on the rocker panels. (yes the engine was off and E-brake on). Anyways as she was steering rapidly from R-to L ther is a noticeable steel-to-steel banging coming from the box area. I could feel it too in the steering.
I started the engine, and steer R-to L, and no more clunk. Shut it down and there it is again. It goes down the road very nicely with no issues. Is this a "normal" situation, A "clunk,, clunk, clunk" when steering back and forth with the engine off, or is something need attention?
In my 2004 Comp G I have an extremely loud clunk when braking. The braking clunk does not happen all the time. There is a clunk while having the car in reverse and power braking it. While holding down the brake and revving hard and fast it make the loud clunk every time. It will not do it all the time in drive though. I can not pin point which side it is coming from. It sounds as if it is mostly the right. It almost sounds as if it is coming from inside the trans near the pan area?
I have replaced the lower control arms, sway bar bushings, stab links, struts & mounts, I have solid engine and trans and top mounts, new inner and outer tie rods, all wheel bearings, etc.... (not for this issue, just for performance/wear).
I am torn between thinking it is a cv axle or internal drive train noise.
As I said when I take off from a dead stop I can feel a clunk or a bump that feels like it is coming from the rear wheels. I can feel it more than I can hear it, although I can hear it a little. It is difficult to describe this. It is only for a second and kinda feels like the rear wheels have no traction then it bumps and takes off. If I ease into the accelerator I can avoid it, but I don't have to hit it real hard at all to get it to do it. I am sure it is not u-joints as I put a brand new drive shaft from driveshaft specialist on in the spring.

Sounded like the transfer case wasn't fully engaged.
This was after doing numerous 3 point turns on a dead end road to turn around. A real nightmare, cliffs on one side mountain on the other.
when we got back to relativity flat ground it ran fine with no more "clunking" noises.
It has 95K of hard miles on it. We didn't want to get stuck out of cell phone range, so we headed home.
Thinking about buying 2007 XLT Supercab 2wd with 235/70R17 stock tires and wheels. Have no plans at this time for a lift.
What would be the largest tire size replacement i could use in an all terrain tire? (thinking about BFG or Bridgestone Revo)...
