I was driving my truck and I heard a noise around the front drivers side wheel area, like a loose center cap. I got home and jacked up the wheel and grabbed it, it wiggled side to side and u and down. Would that be wheel bearing or tie rod end or something else
View 11 RepliesI just completed a detailed cleaning of my SF last weekend and I noticed that every plastic screw and plastic nut inside the wheel wells were all loose. (Not the screws on the outside but inside above the tires.) I tightened them only finger tight.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2008 F-450 Lariat 6.4 4x4. I recently started noticing the front driver side wheel (best I can tell) wheel makes a noise as though it's binding uo when turning either direction, and I can feel it as well. 4wd is not activated and the hubs are in auto. When the front end is off the ground, I rotated the wheels and they spun independently unless the hubs were locked. I noticed what appear to be seals on both the driver and passenger side hanging loose (see pics). What this might be? I recently used the 4wd when we visited White Sands National Monument while pulling a 5th wheel RV.
View 9 RepliesI purchased a 2006 Lariat crew cab 4x4 back in early feb... since then, I've been on the Interstates a little more than usual ( traveling back home.. dad had a surgery 3 hours away) . . . anyway, the truck gets kinda loose feeling when coming onto bridges and off of them, almost like the back end is swaying and the tires are leaving the ground in the front.. my steering wheel gets loose for a split sec. When I bought the truck I wrote this off as bad tires.. it had some over inflated BFG stock looking tires and where too small.
now, I have new wheels and new tires one size up on the tire. While the ride is great off any bumps.. the second I hit a bump it gets squirmy... I had a guy look at the shocks, he said the seemed ok.. could it be possible to have the wrong shocks on ?
My 2004 crew 4x4 did not do this.. so I know its not a characteristic of the truck. Tired of feeling like I am driving on ice... which is how I lost my 04. My first guess was the Shocks... I bought a level kit for my 04 and never got to put it on... so, it may work out to replace them while I am at it.
I gotta a roaring noise coming from my right front while turning. Planning on replacing just the wheel bearings tomorrow & not the whole hub assembly(2008 2wd). Is there a thread that lays out the steps and other parts I may need? I've seen alot different stories on the net on how to do it. Everthing from I can press new bearings to I have to do 4x4 hub conversion. Seems to be some confusion.

March 16, 2017 151,000 miles -- Left front hub failure -- wheel bearing grinding! Verified by jacking up truck and spinning left front wheel -- GRIND! This is coming from down in the hub. This is a 2 wheel drive truck. Yes, you counted correctly, this will be the 4th replacement on the Left side!
NO Towing! NO Overloading! Wheels are 2006 XLT style Aluminum rims with P235/70R17 Michelin XLT M/S (Defender LTX) tires all around.
It only hauls maybe 200 to 300 pounds of electronic equipment at the max, once in a while. This is driving me crazy! I always use FORD PARTS for the HUB ASSEMBLIES. Really loosing faith, the front right hub is OEM original - NEVER CHANGED!
My 2008 F-150 recently started making a funny noise from what seems like the front right wheel.
The weird thing is that it will only make the noise while accelerating. The second i take my foot off the it stops. Also, the sound stops if i put it into 4WD and does not happen at all in 4WD.
It has nothing to do with turning or breaking. It only makes the sound in 2WD while my foot is on the gas.
The sound is kind of weird. It sounds like something is loose, and it sounds similar to tin vibrating on metal.
At first i thought it may have been heat shielding rubbing on something, I checked under the truck and found nothing loose.
It's weird that it only happen in 2wd yet in the front end.
Someone had mentioned that it may have something to do with the fact that there is no torque on the front wheels in 2wd and when i put it into 4wd it put torque on it, whatever might be loose then becomes tight.
I got an 08 F150 2wd. I noticed lately a mild roaring noise coming from right front wheel, but it only does it when I'm turning left. There is nothing while driving straight or during right hand turns. Only happens during left hand turning.
View 1 RepliesMy wife just bought her first truck, a 2008 F150 about a month ago. We have been driving it around since then and love the truck. The only real problem that I have seemed to encounter on the truck is a squeak coming from the front left wheel area. I can hear it when I cut the steering wheel and when I hit a big bump/pothole in the road. My dad and I have looked into it and he thinks that it is probably the axle joint where it goes into the steering knuckle/spindle. If it is this axle joint, is there a way to service/grease it and go on, or will it just simply need a new axle shaft?

Anyway, I have pulled vacuum on both actuators and one of them won't hold. It's obviously bad, but is that why I don't have 4x4? It seems to me like it is not...
When I pull a vacuum on the actuator that does hold, it disengages the hub from the driveshaft allowing free-wheeling. Correct me if I'm wrong, but when the truck is running in 2wd, vacuum must flow to the actuators preventing the hubs from engaging? The actuator on the bad side is locked 'in' so the driveshaft always turns.
According to my train of thought, since the actuator has failed in the 'locked in' position, I should still have 4x4- What am I missing?
2008 2wd 4.6L 98K miles F150 for the past few weeks has been humming with a rhythmic vibration which feels like it is coming from driver's side front wheel. It doesn't do it constantly, nor at all speeds. Once I hit about 25mph, you can start to hear a humming. At 35, slight vibration. Between 50-60, heavier vibration. Sometimes at 65+, it subsides quite a bit. Both front rotor assemblies are newer, and I put in a brand new left because I thought it was a bad bearing.

When I drive, I move the steering wheel and nothing happens for the first few degrees of turn and then I encounter resistence and it turns. It's the same either way. The vehicle seems to track nicely, doesn't pull to either side, just a lot of slop in the steering wheel.
Is there a way to determine if this is really steering related or is it just loose/worn front end suspension parts making themselves known? My guess is suspension items, but the fact the front end behaves itself when the truck is moving has me doubting that just a bit.
I owned a 99 f250 a little while ago. Just bought a 2006 crewcab F150 xlt about 2 months ago, and for the past month there has been this unusual grinding or whirring like noise coming from the front passenger side wheel.
I took it to the mechanic and he found a bad wheel bearing on drivers side and replaced it but that wasn't the issue. He could hear the noise but wasn't able to figure out what the actual issue was.
The noise only happens when my foot is on the throttle. (not when coasting) and i also just discovered that it doesn't make any noise at all when put in 4x4.
MY '07 SuperCab just started making a strange rhythmic sound as I drive. It is coming from the drivers side front wheel area. It is like a short creaking sound. It stays the same if I am turning the tires. Seems to go away if I put the brakes on hard, but I slow down so much I am not sure. Front CV Joint?

Front DS wheel hub. The front wheel bearing nuts come loose all the time. I have to check it every weekend, usually starts to get loose after a week and I have to pull apart the hub and re-tighten the nuts. Bearings are all okay, but tires wobble when they get loose...
Reverse order of install: nut -> keyed washer -> nut -> washer -> snap ring -> 4wd auto engaging assembly -> spring seat -> cap seal -> spring -> cap
My understanding is the deepest nut gets adjusted so that the bearing is tight enough that nothing wobbles but not so tight the wheel can't freely spin. Then the keyed spacer goes in and the second nut is tightened down hard to lock the first nut in position.
I've had on-and-off issues with the front DS in general as well. That side the brake caliper always start to suck in air after a few months, on #4 now. Brake system has been replaced with rebuilt MC & calipers, all new lines and warning switch. Also the 4WD doesn't seem to lock in on that hub every time. It will engage, but doesn't hold if it gets too much torque. Then other times it engages and locks and won't have any problems until next time I want to use it. It works about 70% of the time. I've taken it apart and checked everything, no burrs or wear that I've noticed to cause it.
I have a 02 passat 1.8t FWD, I jacked up the driver side front wheel (with all other three wheels on the ground), and tried to rotate the wheel front side to side, I notice that the wheel actually rotates quite a bit. I wonder what might be causing this problem. I assume that when the car is parked and all other three wheels are on the ground, I am not supposed to be able to rotate the wheel at all.
View 4 RepliesFirst issue started a few weeks ago. When turning left at a speed > 20mph or when turning wheel quickly I get a rattling noise, which is more prominent with the driver window down, so it sounds like it comes from the driver side front wheel, but not quite sure. It is fairly loud as I have had pedestrians look at my car when turning because they can hear the rattle.
Second issue started this morning but has persisted every time since. When the car is cooling down, we get that whirring noise, which I presume is thr coolant pump. That noise also happens now when I enter the car, and it is accompanied by a knocking noise as if somebody is hitting the outside of the car repeatedly. This is quite unnerving as it sounds like something is hitting the bodywork of the car. It stops immediately when the normal whirring stops.
I had the steering and water pump recall done in november last year, could this be related to that? Forgot ti add the car has done 49000miles....
