I have an 05 f150 5.4 and when it shifts into overdrive the whole truck starts jerking, if I turn overdrive off it shifts and runs smooth through all other gears. When it does start jerking if i give it gas and speed up it stops and runs smooth?

View 2 RepliesI have recently bought a new truck this month and everything was nice and dandy till i noticed an annoying jerking at 45-50 mph. The check engine light didn't come on till recently when it got really bad and would barely start. I hooked a code reader up to it and it said cylinder 6&8 misfire. So I had the coils replaced on those two cylinders and it seemed to start and idle better.
So I took it on the interstate to see if the jerking was gone as well. and it still jerks at 45-50 just like before. I was going to take it to the dealership to have them figure out what the issue is but that's 100 bones just to figure out what the problem is. My mechanic doesn't want to mess with the spark plugs because he knows they always break.
I have an 04 f150 with the 5.4 and recently, within the past few months, I've noticed some "jerking" especially when accelerating. At first, I thought it was the transmission, but the jerking does not coincide with the shift patterns. It jerks and stutters around 45-50 mph and 1500 rpms especially under light acceleration. Not sure if one is connected to the other, but also have no real power, I'm barely moving under heavy acceleration. ...What could I be looking at? I am thinking it has several options, I just need to know which one to explore first...cheap, meaning fuel pump/filter?? MAF?? Or Engine Coils?
View 6 RepliesWell this weekend I'm doing quite a bit of work to the truck. My tires and exhaust got delivered last night, now I'm just waiting on the leveling kit. Here's my issue:
For a little while now (5k-ish miles) going in and out of overdrive the tranny makes a clunk noise during the shift. Time to change the tranny fluid and filter? I am making a trip up north on Sunday and don't want to have the tranny the bed on the way.
On saturday I am doing the leveling kit (2"), brakes, exhaust (MBRP), and new tires (325/60r20 Terra Grapplers). Should I go ahead and do the tranny fluid and filter while I'm at it, or just wait till I get back. I am figuring on about 2k miles throughout the trip.
I have an 04 f-150 supercrew 4x4 lariat with 103k miles that has a pretty bad vibration between 45-50 after it switches into overdrive, when you turn overdrive off the problem goes away. I've taken it to the dealer and they put shutter guard in it an said to let it work through for a couple hundred miles. It still hasn't gotten any better, what it is?
View 3 RepliesI have an 06 F150 4x4 crew cab w/ 108k miles and the 5.4 flex fuel v8. I'm getting a pretty bad jerk while using the cruise control and going down hill, seems almost like it is turning the cruise on and off rapidly while it is rolling. And if so, were you able to fix it and what was the fix? It works perfectly on level road or going uphill, just does this going downhill, very consistently. No lights on the dash, and no other issues.
View 3 RepliesI'll try to explain what the truck is doing best I can. I'm not sure if it's the engine or tranny. When you lug the truck on a hill or put a load behind it and lug it the truck jerks like the engine is cutting out or the tranny is jerking, I can't tell which. You can drive it all day long on a flat road or small hills and you can't make it do it. It does it worse going up a hill with a load behind it. You can lug the truck on a steep hill let off the accelerator and mash it back down and it will do it almost every time. I've tried overriding the overdrive and it still does it. If you keep the rpms above 2000 up a hill it won't do it. I've had it checked by a transmission shop and they couldn't make the truck do it. Also it doesn't throw any codes or put the check engine light on when this happens. 2007 F150 supercrew 5.4 auto, with 88,000 miles.
View 12 RepliesI have a 2004 Fx4 that I took on a cross country trip this past weekend. Everything was running fine until I stopped for the night and got a hotel. Woke up the next morning and the "O/D Off" light was illuminated on the dash and the overdrive toggle button (on mine, on the center console next to the console mounted shifter) doesn't work to turn overdrive back on. When I got on the highway it wouldn't upshift into overdrive.
Hopefully this is just the switch assembly (?) so I won't have to do any major tranny work . . . However, I found it weird that if the switch failed it didn't fail in overdrive since I was running in overdrive the day before.
Also, any link to a good thread about removing the trim on the center console in those trucks to get to the switch assembly? I assume that's a pretty easy job but I've never dug into the console before.
My 2005 4.2 L transmission slips in overdrive but I turn off overdrive and it stops slipping instantly. What could be the reason for this does this require an entire trans rebuild or is it an easy fix.
View 1 RepliesI have lost drive and overdrive. I have first and second and when I let off the gas pedal everything seems normal. When I am in drive with overdrive switched off and keep a steady speed it doesn't shift into drive. When I let off the gas in drive the tach goes to 1k and its like I'm in neutral. If I switch OD on it's like neutral and the engine revs. I have pulled the pan and valve body and do not see any metal.
OD snap ring is intact. Fluid looks good with no burnt smell...I'm thinking shifting solenoids but have not tested them yet. There is no grinding noise at all and no slipping in first and second gears. It threw cam sensors codes and I replaced both but I think that was from the neutral condition and test drove before dropping the pans and still no shifting to drive or OD. No transmission codes...
I have a 2006 F150 5.4L 3V with 105,000 miles on it. Recently, it has developed a misfire that is progressively getting worse. It happens when the truck is in overdrive, with engine RPM between about 1200 to 1800. Cruising at this RPM the truck runs great. If I increase the throttle, I develop a pronounced misfire. Once the truck down shifts out of OD and engine RPM exceeds 2000 RPM the misfire goes away. I have never had the CEL light come on during any of these events. The truck has the original plugs in it AFIK. I have not changed them.
View 6 Repliesi have an 07 ford f 150 5,4 liter. at speeds between 45 and 55 it has like a sputtering and jerking loss of power. I had a computer hooked up to it and it said fuel pump replaced it but it is still doing it, what this might be.
View 5 RepliesI have an 06 Lincoln MK LT with 147K miles. Just recently when it went into overdrive it was like I shifted into neutral. Pushed the overdrive off button and it drove just fine although no 3rd gear (overdrive). what do I need to do here other than paying for new tranny.
View 2 RepliesLost overdrive. Shifts when o/d disengaged. Dropped pan, valve body and found that the servo retaining ring is still intact but the small clip for the center shafts of the servo was broken. Found it loose on the valve body along with a flat piece of metal shaped like half of a hexagon. 3 sided shape, approximately 1 inch each side. Like one 6 inch piece that's folded together. Don't know where that came from. Afraid to put back together without knowing where that came from. Was founded right next to the broken clip. 2007 f150 4.6 4x2 ....
View 13 RepliesI just bought a 2007 f150 4x4 5.4 triton with 69 thousand miles less than a month ago. Since then the transmission has been rebuild but come to find out a misfire will cause overdrive to act up, and it just recently started misfiring badly. It was throwing a code. 2 coils were replaced and still misfiring. It's not throwing a code anymore. No check engine light flashing or nothing.

I was also told by a technician in a trans shop that the Trans-X additive for hypoid oil in a posi-trac was ok to use even though the back of the tube says "Not safe for automatic transmissions". Do this is accurate or if the guy was just blowing smoke?
View 5 Replies2004 F150 FX4 5.4L. I drove from Vancouver to Edmonton and back this week and I started to get some issues. If I'm in overdrive at highway speeds, from about 90km/h to 120km/h give or take, which would be around 1600-2100rpm, and then I try to accelerate, sometimes on flats, rarely on downhills, but always on uphills, the truck will begin to jerk fore and aft. It feels like it's something through the driveline, either the driveshaft or the differential, but I really can't say for certain as I'm stuck in the driver's seat while this is happening.
If the truck downshifts or if I take it out of overdrive, i.e. getting the revs up high, the problem is no more. Other than the issue I'm having, it operates perfectly so this is very odd. I know that overdrive isn't a hill climbing gear, but normally an engine in the wrong gear will simply lug along until it's downshifted. The entire truck jerking shouldn't happen.
On my way to Edmonton, I noticed that this would cause one single, minor jerk. This is my way of describing it, but it was like the driveshaft had spun freely and then promptly re-engaged with the differential gear, causing a clunk. I doubt that's actually what happened, but I'm just trying to explain the sensation. It kind of feels like trailer jerking.
On the way back to Vancouver, it was a lot worse. Like I said, the whole truck would be jerking about once per second but there was one time that I found the sweet spot and it began jerking rapidly, twice per second. I threw it out of overdrive to stop this but the vibration caused the check engine light to flash a few times but it went away and didn't stay on.
What I might be up against? Been doing a little research. Seems as though this is common and it's supposedly the spark plugs, but those only have 50,000km on them.
I have a 2005 F150 S Crew and have been maintaining it regularly. I started having a jerking while accelerating lightly or in between shifting then the overdrive light comes on and then flashes trans fault on dash. I took it to the local tranny shop who fixed the problem however about a year later it started doing it again. What the problem could be before I have to spend another bucks?
