Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: FX4 - Hum And Whine At Speed Above 20 Mph Or So

Nov 30, 2010

I have a 2004 F-150 FX4 4x4 with 80k with a 9.75 LS, recently I've had the truck start making a humming sound/vibration (similar to the sound/feel you get when crossing onto rumble strips, only not as intense) when at speed anywhere above 20 mph or so, its doing this all of the time. The strange thing about the sound is that is only occurs when I am driving completely straight or to the left, if have the steering wheel just slightly turned to the right of center, the sound and vibration completely goes always until the wheel returns back to center. also I've started to notice that sometimes (not all the time) at lower speeds when let off of the gas and decelerate. I'm getting a very high pitch whine that sounds like a metal-metal sound but only lasts for a few seconds then goes away.

I cant tell where if the sounds are coming from the front or back and i cant decipher which side it is coming from. Also, I don't know if it is related but over the summer, probably june or so, i had to drain the fluid from the rear end and replace and add an extra bottle of friction modifier to get rid of the shuddering problem alot of people with 04's have run into.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Back Up Sensor Whine

It only does it sometimes. When I put truck in reverse the back up sensor sound just goes BEEP none stop even if there's behind my truck. Sensors on the bumper looked clean. Why?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Whine Coming From Rear Differential

I got a new to me truck. It's a 2004 F150 Lariat 4x4 with the 5.4L. It's got a whine that I believe is coming from the rear differential. I'm going to change the fluid. My axle code is 26 which I believe is 3.73 non-limited slip. My owners manual says to use 75w-90 but I've seen a lot of posts on here that say to use 75w-140. Which is right or better? Also, is my rear differential the 9.75"?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Loud Rear End Howl / Whine

My '04 4wd has a pretty loud rear end howl, it is a LS but don't think it's an LS problem, no noises or chattering when turning. Howling is loudest at 50 to 60, but some noise at all speeds. I don't mind tearing into the rear myself, but not sure if I could tell what was wrong just by looking, i suppose bad bearing might be obvious, but not sure how to diagnose gear lash tolerances. It only has 107000 mi. and is an 8.8 rear I believe.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Rear Axle Whine Over 25 - 70 MPH?

had a leaking rear driveshaft seal at the axle and replaced it and fluid. 75W145 full synthetic as recommended. it was changed at 128000 and I've started to get an axle whine over 25 MPH up to 65-70MPH. quites down around 80 MPH. I just checked it after 2 months (whine just started) with 133000. Any TSB. does this fall under TSB 05-23-3? Noise sounds like I've got really aggressive tires on the truck. Only have Dayton HT all season. Did not add the XL3 additive. Would this work at this juncture.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Small Whine Coming From A/C Compressor?

Noticed a small whine coming from the A/C compressor? I caught ear of it the other morning when I was putting the trash on the street and the truck was running. It's definitely the A/C because when you cut it off the noise goes away.

Honda - Odyssey :: 2004 - Engine Whine That Increases In Pitch With RPM Or Speed

Recently had my 105K maintenance done which was water pump and timing belt plus whatever other misc belts go with that. Had it done at an indepentdent shop. Since the job was done we have noticed a high pitched whine that increases in pitch with RPM or speed that we drive (literally sounds like a jet engine whine). I took it back to the independent shop and he suggested it was our transmission. I have noticed no difficulty when changing gears nor any engine warning lights. I contacted Honda and our vehicle was part of a transmission recall in 05 that was done already. Other sources have suggested that the whine could be the belt being too tight or the water pump. Shop supposedly used all honda parts. Should I take it back to him again and suggest that the belt is too tight? Take it to the dealer and see what they think?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Metallic Clacking Sound At High Speed / Low Pitch Whirring At Low Speed?

I have a 2004 F-150 SCrew Lariat 4X4 with 80K miles. Over the past month or so, every once in awhile there would be a loud metallic "clacking" sound (kind of like sticking a peice of aluminum in a bike's spokes) that would start at higher speeds and would turn into a low pitched whirring gear sound as I slowed down and eventually there would be a thud followed by a sensation of running over a small bump and the noise would be gone. Kind of confusing I know, but that is the best way to describe it. My gut feeling is a wheel bearing or transmission problem....

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Engine Whine At 1800 - 2100 RPM When Under Load

My truck has 57k miles on it. At 1800-2100 RPM it whines under or over it is just fine. it has a new air filter in it as well, still makes the noise, it doesn't matter what gear i am in, it only does this under load. if i free rev it , it will not do it.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Bearing Noise - Constant Grinding / Whine

We've had a lot of rain here in pa lately and i hit a few big puddles the other day and now i have a growl slash wine in the front of my motor,now i narrowed it down to something driven by the bely because I removed the belt and no noise all pulleys feel good and smooth except the ac compressor if you spin it by hand it has a rough/dry feeling and sound to it but the noise doesn't change with the ac on or off its just constant grinding/whine. Replace the ac compressor pulley bearing that what I am thinking it is and don't really want to change out the whole compressor..

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2006 - Whine From Motor Which Gets Louder With Increased RPM

My truck seams to have developed a whine. It gets louder with increased RPM. Sounds like its coming from the motor, specifically the front of the motor, maybe one of the pulleys? Water pump??? Alternator??? Im not sure but Im about to head out on a 2800 mile round trip pulling a heavy load and want my truck to be ready for the trip...? It sounds like its gotten louder in the last couple weeks but I think its just because I had a new manifold installed on one side and the truck is quieter making this seam louder.... But I don't know if I should be worried about it.. I don't want to waste money (right before a big trip) chasing a noise if its not something that is an issue..

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Power Steering Pump Started To Whine Really Loud

i have an 04 f-150 with a 5.4 motor. about 2000 miles ago the power steering pump started to whine really loud. I sucked out the power steering fluid and started it up and the fluid that back into the tank looked like it was gritty and rusty. I replaced it out a few times and no change. I then did the job of replacing the power steering pump which was about a 5 hour job.

It was quiet for about 5 miles and the new one started whining. Every week I have been sucking out the old fluid and replacing it and it still seems to be gritty. What could I do to quiet it down? the steering works perfect btw. I am looking at selling this truck and buying an 09 or newer ford and want to quiet it down before selling it. The truck has 88,000 miles on it and i am the original owner.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Loud Screaming Whine For 5 Seconds When Slowed Down To Turn A Corner

Slowed down to turn a corner and the strangest, loudest, noise - a loud screaming whine that lastest like 5 seconds. Also perhaps a spin noise and a little bit of a thump like going back in gear. Went out to drive it again, and again it did it but only once. I then drove it hard, fast and slow, in 4 wheel drive, out of 4 wheel drive, stop and go and it has not done it again.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: STX With Vibration At Certain Speed 55 - 60 MPH

Recently got in to a 2008 F150 STX.

I started noticing a vibration in the truck when reaching 55-60mph. Anything under that is a smooth ride but like clockwork, once I reach around 55, a vibration I feel in the cabin kicks in.

I just took it to a Ford service dealer around my way and they inspected everything about the tires, including alignment and all was good. That was my first guess and what I heard is most common with this issue.

What would be the next possible culprit? A belt maybe? Kinda lost on where to move forward without spending all kinds of dough on testing.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Road Noise With Vehicle Speed?

The noise is related to vehicle speed, not engine speed. Easiest to hear when all is quite coasting at 30mph. Sounds like the front. It just started the other day.

The noise sounds like moan from airplanes high ahead (think WW2 movies). I replaced the front springs and shocks a few thousand miles ago and did not get it realigned. No noise until now. The tires are good and feel smooth (no sign of cupping, feathering,..). It is 4wd. How best to tell if it is wheel bearing? Rear end? Get it aligned?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Slight Shake At Highway Speed About 90 KPH

So, after putting new tires on my truck about 2 years, I noticed a slight shake when I drove at about 90kph. I let it go for quite some time thinking it was just a balance issue.

Well this weekend I spent 7 hours washing, waxing, and polishing my truck. It was worth. The rims reflect the moonlight now. It's amazing. During this washing, I scrubbed in behind the spokes of the rims. I found a big chunk of mud. Well surprise surprise, my shake at 90kph went away... or so I thought.

I no longer have the shake when driving at 90 or accelerating through 90kph like I used to. Now I have the shake when I let off the gas at 100 and drop to 80kph. It shakes at 95 through 90, and then goes away.

What is causing this? The parking brake is never used, and is showing no signs of engaging while driving. Is this a driveshaft issue?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2006 - Vibration At Highway Speed?

Today I caught a deal on a 06 F-150 with the 5.4l. I noticed a slight vibration that comes and goes at highway speed (65-75), when I got home I jacked the front end up and checked everything out. The right front CV axle is still engaged with the tire when it is out of 4 wheel drive, I can engage the 4wd and everything locks in and works as it should. My understanding is that the axle should spin free and independent of the wheels when in 2wd? How would I go about troubleshooting this?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Shudder When Taking Off From A Stop Or A Very Slow Speed?

Looking at a truck at a dealership. 04 F150 Lariat 5.4 3v? 2wd SuperCrew 148k miles. Bone stock besides the bedliner.

Truck is pretty nice besides these 4 things. Kind of a shudder when taking off from a stop or a very slow speed. Adjustable pedals don't work.

New brakes, but possibly the rears are dragging a bit. Was able to turn them in neutral and the rear on jacks. Extra, guessing because of the newer looking battery, some systems lack data from the OBD2

I'm mainly concerned about the shudder from a complete stop/1-2mph. At the dealer, to leave the lot, the driveway was elevated. I think it showed very well climbing that hill. As it was noticed and played with the gas a bit. Otherwise, you stomp the gas, it may shudder for a second or two, (3-5 times?) once it hits about 3000 rpm in 1st, its fine. Only ever seemed to do it in 1st and never any other gear, never on any gear changes.

We lifted the rear end up on a jack and fiddled around. Put it in neutral and spun the wheels, tried to mess with the drive shaft... According to dad, who was looking at it with me said it was fine and that it's normal to have a little bit of slop, but I didn't notice any real slop myself, tried to push on the driveshaft on the transmission side and I think it may have moved a bit but it didn't feel loose or clang or anything. Although I didn't get to push on it too hard because he was rotating the driveshaft at the time.

I assume new fluids in engine and trans. My dad said something about old oil marks on the transmission pan area or something. Both to the fill line.

One thing that I wonder about is how long this truck has been sitting. I wonder about the differential clutches. I'm not that sure what it really has for the rear end. But google had mention of clutch packs in the rear. I wonder if because it's been sitting that the oil has settled out of the clutches or something. There was a mess of silicon on the rear diff cap area. Couldn't tell if it was new or not. I think we put 10-20 miles on it at least and only looked under it for maybe a half hour... Still did the clunk/shudder at a start from a stop, when we returned it.

So, what could be causing this clunk/chatter when talking off from a stop/1-2mph roll?

Axle wrap?
Differential Clutches?
Differential?
Driveshaft?
Transmission?
