Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Engine Up Gradation?
Nov 9, 2011
I have a 04 f-150 with the 5.4L engine with 200,000km on it and I'm noticing that it is starting to lack in the power department it has a k/n intake and cat dual exhaust the truck still works really good but it is starting to feel its age. What upgrades there is for the engine........now i don't want to hear ''put a super charger on it'' or '' get a gear smashing programer'' for it I'm looking for cam, head, crank, options of if there is any rebuild/performance kits out there for these motors?? also is it as simple as getting parts off other ford motors that will work better ?? I'm just not real familiar with ford motors.

Shot in HD as are all my vids, view in YouTube and force a 720p view to see better detail.
(Tap the title bar at the top of the video box; at YouTube tap the three vertical dots at the top right; select the quality gear icon; select 720p).
Over at TDS I did pictorials, some of which are in my TMT Facebook page.

About 6 months ago I bought a 2003 F350 King Ranch to tow my toy hauler. Very happy so far. The one complaint I have is this...
The design of the heater / AC control module for this year of truck does not have a separate AC switch. There is not a separate button to turn the AC on and off and with a separate switch to choose which vent to blow the air through. For this year, I think 99-04, the vent selector switch must be turned all the way to the left and there are two AC Options... AC and Max AC. For both of these options the AC only blows through the dash vents.
Is there anyway to upgrade the in-dash unit to allow you to turn on and off the AC compressor while independently selecting, floor, foor / vent, floor / defrost, vent / defrost, etc... for the vents that the AC blows through?
I live in CA and it can get HOT... I would really like to blow the AC through the floor vents and / or the floor vents and the dash at the same time to provide more even cooling throughout the truck. Also, blowing through the floor vents would provide better cooling to the back seats.

I've been mulling over the idea of doing a muffler job on my 2002 f350 7.3 cc short bed. I do tow on and off for work and dual material for work. I am thinking of upgrading the exhaust because I noticed a couple small leaks in the muffler and I'd like to lower the egt's for the truck so it breath a bit smoother. I'm not a fan of the really high pitched sounds I've heard on some I want it deep and heavy sounding. The turbo is fine for now but eventually I'll need to know what to upgrade to once it starts to wear out. I don't plan on doing dumb chips or tunes because it's not a toy truck but a work and daily driver.

My 2010 Tiggy S had the base radio so I upgraded to RCD-510 and installed the antenna adapter. The roof antenna only has one coax from it to the radio. FM reception is great. What am I missing?

So im sure this has been talked about for a long time now but I m going to bring it up again. So I was in the local service shop for a new pinion seal. while there I also had them change my oil for me I was at 2800 miles so what the heck I thought go ahead and change it they used 5w-30 instead of the 5w-20 my question is will this hurt the engine or would this grade oil do better in my truck it seems to run smoother and not as noisy.

A 2004 and up f150. I found one in great shape for 5,000 dollars with 120,000. Drives good but it has a knock I'n the 5.4 engine. It gets quieter when the engine is warm. Should I avoid this truck or will I be okay with purchasing? Only thing holding me back from buying truck is the knock...

Not sure why this happens but if I do a tight turn like a U turn the engine will just die ? Has happened quite often and I am not sure why this would happen?

I have a Ford F150 5.4L lariat 2 wheel drive with 78,000 miles on it. I just had new platinum plugs put in and a new air filter along with the routine LOF service. I had the plugs changed because I was experiencing some missing out at 50 MPH. The check engine light was not on. The mechanic said that one plug was definitely bad.
I have had the truck back for a week now and today while driving it I had the same missing out at 50MPH. The check engine light is not on. I had the cruise control on when it happened so now I am wondering if it could be related to the cruise control? What else It could be?

I need a new engine for my 2004 SOHC 5.4 3v F150. Without sounding like a dumb question, what engines can I use? All I've heard about this engine is that it was a horrible one. I can vouch for that personally. I will be looking for a crate engine soon.

I have a 2004 F150 Lariat Supercrew 4x4 . I got a new transmission put in and a Oil change shortly after. A few weeks later I got a knocking noise. No check engine light, starts up great, No real notable problems just the noise. At Idle no noise just the usual cam phaser ticking, but once the engine is warmed up at about 1100 RPM it starts knocking like a . I took it to a few different shops one was sure it was the timing area so they replaced the timing chain, tensioner, pully. ect. Took it to a ford dealer where he didn't really look at it just said you need a new engine.
I went to another ford dealer where they said rod knock or stuck lifter but if that were the case shouldn't it knock constantly? another shop said VCT soleinods, Spark plugs. another said it could be the flex plate! I'm aware of the cam phaser diesel ticking noise they notoriously have but thats not it. I've parked it for a few years to be safe but started it weekly. I didn't intend on having it sit for so long but due to work situations and what not it has sat but now I'm on a mission to make it my daily driver again. I'm no mechanic but I'm not totally green to vehicle mechanics so ill be inspecting what i can within my limits.

I noticed the problem today when I was driving to the store. I was going around 60 and went to pass a car. As soon as I hit the gas there is a popping noise coming from the engine compartment and it had no power. It only does it between 50-65 mph.

I have a 2004 f150 lariat crew cab 4x4 with the 5.4 3 valve. It now has 113 000 miles. Since i got it at 85 000 miles its had a hiss when the engine was under load. So like light acceleration or driving into wind. The guy i bought it from said that it had a manifold leak so that's what i figured it was. I got the manifold fixed and it still hisses. There are no check engine lights. It almost feels like my engine lags when it starts hissing. It sounds like its coming from right on the other side of the fire wall. What it could be?

I bought a 2008 5.4l xlt about a year ago now. For the first time I took it on a trail that had a little mud. With my incredible wisdom, I decided to park the truck rather than wash it off. The next day the engine started making weird noises when I turned the steering wheel. After washing the truck it still made noises so I opened the hood. THE ENTIRE engine compartment is covered in a serious amount of mud. I feel that this has to be what started the noises when I turn. Mud dried in the wrong place? The noise sounds like a whine and its pitch matches the engine rpm until over 2500 where I don't really hear it anymore. Is there a way to flush the engine compartment?

I have an 05 f150 5.4 v8 super crew cab and I bought it for 3000 because of a cracked block. I bought a re-manufactured engine and installed it and now i have a knocking that wont go away. After I started it up it sounded beautiful for about 10 minutes and then i had a knocking start up. I have put about 30 miles on the new engine and still have the knocking. I let it sit over night and I started it up and there was no knocking so i drove about 3 miles to the gas station and by the time I got there the knocking was back. it runs fine no other issues but why do I have this knocking with a new engine.
