I have a 04 4.6 f150 4x4. I have had some off road wear on the truck but put a stop to it here recently. I have replaced ball joints , struts , sway bar linkage , hubs , and now have a clunking sound going over every bump no matter the speed. Everything is tight underneath while stopped, other than the front driveshaft. It seems to have too much play to me? What it could be ???

I thought it was the struts and mounting plates so they are new . no change Stabilizer links were tight but i replaced them as well. Everything else seems tight but the noise has not changed with any of the above mentioned repairs.
View 13 Replies2003 Elantra GT has a clunking on the right front when I hit bumps in the road. It is loudest when I first start to drive. After about 10 minutes it quiets somewhat and sometimes is gone completely. I looked at the CV joint and the strut but they appear ok. Also checked sway bar and tightened all bolts.
View 3 RepliesHave just picked up a 2011 Tiguan Highline, and there is a loose clunk in the front going over high frequency bumps in the road. I own a MKIV Jetta TDi and it feels similar to bad sway bar bushings on my MKIV, however it's not the bushings on the Tiguan.
I crawled underneath and tried to find looseness in the suspension with no luck. The sway bar end links seem tight (compared to the MKV Jetta I also have), and the strut mounts do not seem to be loose.
What I did find were some suspect control arm bushings. I'm new to suspension noises in this platform, our MKV has been flawless for the past 7 years. Could these worn bushings cause a loose clunk?
I also checked the subframe bolts and fuel lines that come up in common searches.
A clunk sound coming from the front end. Drivers side and Passenger side. Not really a metal on metal sound. The problem started after coilover install. The sound occurs while braking and accelerating over bumps. So what I've replaced:
-Strut Mounts and Bearings
-Lower control arm bushings (R32 bushings)
-Drivers Side CV axle
What I've checked:
-Tie rod ends have no play
-Ball joints have no play.
-I have no sway bar, so not the sway bar bushings.
-Its not the axle hitting the frame.
Could possibly be the dog bone mount but when I installed the 1' motor mounts I saw no issue but could possibly be the bushing. feel the clunk in my foot as well.

I have a 2007 Sonata Ltd (63000 miles) and had a clunk in the front suspension. I had the front upper control arms replaced (which were visually badly worn) and that fixed the problem. But now, a several months later another similar clunking noise has developed when I go over those small speed bumps in parking lots.
View 18 RepliesI recently bought a CPO 2007 GX 470 with 110k miles. At no charge dealer made repairs re the Bulletin about clunk in rear when I slowly drive over speed bumps. Had all front and rear shocks raced with OEM shocks, and four new Michellin MS2 tires installed. Rear end still feels like is is bottoming out sometimes during regular local and freeway driving when going over different times of road bumps.
My 'i89 a Dodge Ramdharger ( only car I ever bought brand new off the lot ) with 174k miles and old shocks and original springs drives better over bumps and speed bumps than the GX. One Lexus dealer said the reason is because the rear air bags ( that are not leaking )do not fill up fast enough when going move bumps and that can cause the bottoming out feeling. My mechanic is going to check it over again. What could be causing the bottoming out feeling?
I have a clunking sound coming from the back end. It is most noticeable at lower speeds going over bumps. I can also make the clunk happen by grabbing the top of the right rear tire and rocking it. I can feel something moving while I am doing this, but I can't pinpoint it. The bushings seem to be in good condition. The left rear wheel bearing was replaced recently. I also have an intermittent brake pulsation which feels like a warped rotor. I don't think it is actually the rotor, because it doesn't happen every time I apply the brakes. I believe that these two things are related. Is it possible for the rear struts to cause these issues?

Cant find any thing broken or loose. I know if the spare is loose it will make that sound but its tight. What could be loose.?? Heat shields all seem tight.
My driver door is just loose enough to rattle on bumps and it's quite annoying. I've loosened the striker and tapped it in as far as it'll go with the hammer and it is still not tight enough. I need about 1/4 inch more and that's about how worn my striker is. Obviously I need to buy new a new striker based on the wear, but am I the only one with strikers wearing too much to be adjusted and causing rattles ?
View 7 RepliesI have a 2007 Ford Expedition with approx 135k miles with a 5.4. At approx 45 miles per hours it starts shaking and shuttering. It feels almost like you ran over one of those traffic bumps. I've had quite a few issues I've been working so I recently changed all my plugs with motorcraft platinum and all new COPs.
When I am going approx 45 miles per hour it will shutter for about 1-2 seconds with overdrive on. You can almost time it that it will do it every 4 seconds. With overdrive off, you can feel something dragging down the engine and hear a light grinding noise or a mechanical sound but the shuttering is less. I feel there is something definitely cycling approx every 4 seconds.
When i am doing heavy acceleration I feel that it has adequate power and now that I've replace the plugs/cops I don't feel any significant misses etc under hard acceleration (before I changed the plugs/cops I did feel misses).
I've got a lifted 2006 F150 crew cab lariat and I understand mileage is poor 10-11 per mile. 35" tires under a pro comp 6" lift. I have changed out my plugs twice last year and am still very under powered. What else can i do? I also have a clunk when i accelerate, sound like the rear end or drive line possibly. Had my transfer case replaced recently by ford and don't remember the noise prior.
View 11 RepliesWell this weekend I'm doing quite a bit of work to the truck. My tires and exhaust got delivered last night, now I'm just waiting on the leveling kit. Here's my issue:
For a little while now (5k-ish miles) going in and out of overdrive the tranny makes a clunk noise during the shift. Time to change the tranny fluid and filter? I am making a trip up north on Sunday and don't want to have the tranny the bed on the way.
On saturday I am doing the leveling kit (2"), brakes, exhaust (MBRP), and new tires (325/60r20 Terra Grapplers). Should I go ahead and do the tranny fluid and filter while I'm at it, or just wait till I get back. I am figuring on about 2k miles throughout the trip.
Yesterday my 5 year old daughter was "driving" my 07 S-cab 4x4 while I was installing steps on the rocker panels. (yes the engine was off and E-brake on). Anyways as she was steering rapidly from R-to L ther is a noticeable steel-to-steel banging coming from the box area. I could feel it too in the steering.
I started the engine, and steer R-to L, and no more clunk. Shut it down and there it is again. It goes down the road very nicely with no issues. Is this a "normal" situation, A "clunk,, clunk, clunk" when steering back and forth with the engine off, or is something need attention?
I have a 2004 f150 4x4, When I put it in four wheel drive everything fine until I make a sharp turn. It's not a little wheel hop its a loud clunk that feels like the tire comes off the ground. I changed the cv axle from the side that seemed to be doing it but it didn't work. Could it be the actuator?
View 1 RepliesAs I said when I take off from a dead stop I can feel a clunk or a bump that feels like it is coming from the rear wheels. I can feel it more than I can hear it, although I can hear it a little. It is difficult to describe this. It is only for a second and kinda feels like the rear wheels have no traction then it bumps and takes off. If I ease into the accelerator I can avoid it, but I don't have to hit it real hard at all to get it to do it. I am sure it is not u-joints as I put a brand new drive shaft from driveshaft specialist on in the spring.

Sounded like the transfer case wasn't fully engaged.
This was after doing numerous 3 point turns on a dead end road to turn around. A real nightmare, cliffs on one side mountain on the other.
when we got back to relativity flat ground it ran fine with no more "clunking" noises.
It has 95K of hard miles on it. We didn't want to get stuck out of cell phone range, so we headed home.
I have a 2004 F150 4x4 5.4. Over the last few weeks I've noticed that when the truck has been parked for even a short time, when I start to move out I am getting a thumping noise from the rear, almost sounds and feels as though I am driving over small speed bumps, but once i get going it seems fine. Where to start?
View 5 RepliesSo from my previous post of might having a tranny problem or differential issue, it turns out that my front passenger side wheel hub is bad. Here is the odd part......the front passenger side wheel has some side to side play and it does make a clunk noise but it spins freely. On the driver side, there doesn't seem to be any play but it has resistance when spinning the wheels. Are both front wheel hubs bad or just one?

I have recently purchased a ski boat and lately when towing my boat and coming to a stop I feel as light movement coming from the rear of the truck that feels like something slides forward slightly. When I accelerate "it" slides back and if I accelerate quickly, "it" makes a loud clank noise.
I have ruled out hitch, receiver, ball, anything from the boat/trailer etc... It is coming from the transfer case/ spare tire area under the truck and it only appears to do it (or to where it is noticeable) while towing the boat.
I have 2004 Super Duty with a noise in the front end when I hit bumps or backing out or entering a driveway with a lip. I don't feel anything in the steering wheel but I feel it on the floor board with my feet? Where to begin?
