I just bought a truck, it has a whining noise while accelerating, stops while letting on the gas, does not do it in neutral even if i rev up the engine. Only whines while there is some force on it, ie.. accelerating, or going up a hill at any angle, and does it from about 10-15mph- atleast 60mph.
View 2 RepliesWhy my transmission is acting up. its recently started humming/whining when accelerating. it sort of sounds like the power steering when you turn your wheel to far on an older car. it recently started happening (3-4months ago) and I am not to happy since its pretty much a year old. Is it covered under the limited lifetime warranty? it has 28000 miles on it, v6, automatic, and its the xle version.
View 14 RepliesI went to throw my truck in 4wd the other day and now I'm experiencing a humming noise, but only when in 4 wheel. It's only noticeable when I'm in 4 wheel and I'm off the accelerator or coming to a stop, soon as I accelerate, come to a stop, or take it out of 4wd the noise disappears.
Only other symptom was I tried putting it in 4-low the other day and all it did for a good minute was rev up a bunch, but I switched it back to 2wd and 4-hi and low worked after that. 4wd does still work just fine, it's just buzzing and it's annoying the heck out of me
I did a search, not just on this forum either, all I keep getting is the old "buzzing 'til I put it in 4wd" topic. Hoping to get an answer before I start dropping money trying to find it on my own. I'm not used to these new-style 4wd systems so I'm lost for knowledge here.
Ok, been trying to track down an odd humming noise on my 08 f150 CC 4x4, 4.6l. kind of sounds like a hub bearing going. starts around 25-30mph and never quites down.
Turning left or right to load each side of the suspension doesn't change tone or intensity of the noise, different pavements doesn't change Tone or intensity. Hubs are tight, CVs are tight, 4x4 works as it should. Cant figure this sound out and it's quite loud.
My girlfriend has a 2008 with around 120k miles on it. It's been pretty flawless but yesterday the RPMs started surging while idle and made kind of a high pitch humming noise when accelerating.
Today on her way to work she said the radio was going in and out, the battery light lit up and then the rest of the dash lights came on, and the speedometer stopped working.
What could be the problem? Could it just be the battery?
I've been noticing more and more lately that while my trucks in 1st or maybe 2nd gear, say, slowly coasting around a parking lot for example, there's a whining noise coming from either the rearend or the tranny (cant tell which). It gets louder and more high pitched as I move faster then disappears as soon as the truck shifts gears..
Is this something serious like my transmission on its way out? From what I gather a lot of people seem to have a similar thing going on.. From what I can remember my truck has done this since I bought it, but lately (and maybe its just me) I seem to notice it more like maybe its getting louder..
I noticed my engine whine more than it usual since the last few days. So, I took it to the dealership and have them check. They said that it is the idler pulley going bad. Just want to see some info on diagnosis.

I took it to the dealership and they fed me crap saying when it gets worse or when it happens every time brig it back.

A very odd hum from the rear (2005 f150 4.2) that occurs at all speeds. Low speed it occurs regardless of load on the drive line. At higher speeds it only happens when i have considerable load on the drive line. All bearings in the diff were replaced less than a year ago when the main pinion bearing went and the diff gears were in pretty dam good condition. Wheel bearings are not getting warm to indicate a wheel bearing. And when i let off the throttle it hums for a few seconds and dissipates as the tension on the drive line goes away. I even looked at the carrier bearing assy and it seems to be in good working order. I live pretty dam far from any type of service so i was just curious before i start trying to trouble shoot this any further.
View 1 RepliesMy 05 F150 with 107k miles becomes increasingly noisy.... From speeds about 15mph up to 50mph there is a humming noise from the front wheels, clearly audible during coast. It sounds almost like tire noise, low frequency with a clear tone (not rumble) and gets worse in LH turns / better in RH turns. The frequency follows the speed.
I also can feel vibrations in the steering wheel. It's not the tires, I changed them without any impact. Checked wheel bearing play - seems OK. The locking hubs are stuck in locked position, with quite some play between the hub and the driveshaft at the RH front wheel (have not checked the LH front wheel yet), seems weird...
Where should I start to look, - wheel bearings or locking hubs? And more important, we plan a 1500 mls trip to Germany - do I dare to drive the truck? What is the worst thing that could happen if wheel bearing or locking hub?
I have 2005 F150 XLT 5.4 litre engine and my battery light comes on after letting the truck run on idle or sometimes driving.
Last Saturday went out drove it heater on and radio on I smelled something coming from the heater kinda like burning wire smell didn't think anything of it no smoke from heater (indicating the core was bad) no lights on the cluster nothing; went into the bank let it run came back out my battery light on. Drove it home and while driving the light goes off.
Opened the hood and the smell was coming from the alternator. So I turned the truck off. Let it sit for an hour or so then I took my voltmeter to see if the battery was good. The battery was 12.4v with engine off. Checked my battery connection for corrosion or loose connections everything was tight there was some dust on the battery terminals so I brushed them off. I checked the battery cable that goes from positive to the alternator where it connects to the alternator with that nut it was good, clean and tight.
So I started the engine up and I can hear a whining noise from one of the pulleys. Let it idle for 2 minutes no battery light so I put my voltmeter on the battery it read 13.8v, so I turned on the A/C, head lights, radio and the heater tried again the voltage dropped down to 11.9v then the battery light came back on. Also through all this my battery gauge in the cluster always stays a half way mark doesn't drop or go high. Next with the engine turned off I took the belt off checked the pulleys the idler pulleys seem fine and the belt doesn't show any glazing but the alternator was hot almost like touching a hot exhaust manifold.
So for the last 3 days I have been trying to come up with how to resolve this issue obviously it could be the alternator going bad but the battery has never lost a charge yet I let the truck sit for these past 3 days and today I started the truck and it started right up I don't see any dimming lights except it has a whining noise and the battery light didn't come on immediately I let it run for 5-10 minutes before it came on; I even drove it around the block and the whining noise gets louder every time I step on the gas. To me it's either I need new alternator, tension pulley is bad or the idler pulleys are bad but they turn fine.

Thought it was tire whine but put originals back on and got same thing. 13.5x35 verses 275 Truck has a Fabtech 6" lift. Right CV axle seems tight, rotor assembly replace 2k miles ago. Any other option before going into front diff?
View 2 RepliesI'm new here to the F-150's forum although I've owned a few since 2001. I bought this F-150 '05 5.4L Lariat. Really nice truck. But when I purchased it, it had this weird noise inside the cabin. I thought because it had a camper on it that some tranny noise was coming up thru the camper and the rear cab. After taking camper off, the noise was still there. From everything I've read online, it could be rear pinion seal, differential bearing, tranny, front hubs, etc. I have left a video. Pay close attention to the little whine. Kinda hard to hear if your not listening for it.
Note- when i drive it is most definitely coming from the middle to rear of the truck. But I'm not ruling out anything. I have looked underneath the truck and the differential is dry and the driveshaft area near diff is dry. No leaks. I have not checked fluid in diff. Is there an easy way for these trucks? I have read and heard about adding an additive? The noise starts at about 10-15 mph all the way up to 80. I've never taken it past 80 but I'm sure it's still there.

I purchased a 2006 Ford F-150 XLT, 5.4 3V Triton. Last Thursday my check engine light came on, so I came to this forum and found out how to retrieve the code with out a OBD. It came up as a 0301 Misfire cylinder 1-10?
I went to the dealer and they said it was cylinder one, sold me a new plug and coil pack and they installed it for a nice $$$. On my way home it started to sputter again when you give it heavy throttle, I called they told me that I should change all the plugs and Coil packs, kinda makes sense but to have all 8 plugs and coils go at once it only has 83km on it.
Ok, I have a 2006 Ford f-150 5.4L engine. it has 88000 miles on it. Here recently it has started acting up on me. It starts shaking violently when I slightly accelerate going up hills at any speed. On level ground it doesn't do it. Going down hill it doesn't do it. When stopped it doesn't idle rough.
It does this shaking when I barely press the gas. When it starts I either let off the gas or I push the gas to the floor and it stops. What is going on? This is the first Ford I have ever known. I don't know anything about these vehicles. I have read it might be the coils and plugs but then people have told me it might be the torque converter.
I just bought a 2006 f150 exteneded cab w/ 5.4 V-8 and it vibrates when accelerating from a stopped position but not all the time---happens more when the wheel is turned. It definitely feels like the vib is coming from the left front side. I just got it back from the shop and the mechanic told me the vibration was stemming from the rear and that he exhchanged the fluid and added anti-friction additiver but that he expects the problem to continue.
View 4 RepliesI've had my 2006 XLT F150 (5.4L) for about a month now and have recently noticed what I can only describe as a 'smacking' sound under my truck when I accelerate quickly. It sounds as if I had something stuck to my drive shaft that is slapping the underside of my truck....except I don't. I don't think that its the timing chain because it seems to be coming from under the cab (between drivers/passenger seat maybe). I hear it most often if I try to quickly accelerate from a normal speed (50mph or so) to pass another vehicle. I do not hear it otherwise. Starts with a 'tink tink' then sounds like something hitting the underside. I'm perplexed at what this could be.
View 6 RepliesI have 111,000 miles on my car and I take great care of the engine (or I try at least). I recently just had my first timing belt, water pump, and other belts changed 2 months ago with no problems at all. Recently, my engine just started making an annoying "whining" noise. It almost sounds like a bad transmission or something. However, it makes the same sound in "idle" and whenever I rev the engine the whining noise gets louder. I know the noise is coming from the left side of the engine and I think it may be my alternator dying. When I move the steering wheel around the sound does not get any worse too.
View 9 RepliesMy 2007,4.6 is making a whinning noise from the front of the engine around the idler/tensioner/alternator. What I have read it might be a problem with the alternator getting cold, I forgot to mention it's cold up here. Fixed by changing the alternator and did the noise come back as it seems to be a design problem?
View 12 RepliesI just bought a 2005 fx4 and there is a whining or whirring sound coming from the rear of the truck when I hit around 70km/h. the second i let go of the accelerator it stops.
Today when I got home after a 15 minute highway drive, i got under the truck and felt the differential area. it was warm but not hot. and there was a wet spot on it. i wiped off a drop of oil. there was also a wet spot on the bottom, seemed to be just water? I'm not sure.
