My 2005 F150 is making a thumping noise in the front end. It increases as speed increases and is more pronounced when turning wheel left and almost goes away when turning to the right. Sometimes at higher speeds I can feel it in the gas pedal. Seems to be coming more from the driver side but I could be wrong On that.
View 3 Replies I replaced both 1/2 axles last week after one CV boot pretty much disintegrated. Since it is a 2005 Acura TL with 146K miles, I changed both axles completely. BTW - I had NO forewarning, noises, etc. before the axles died last week! I only perceived an increase in road noise, but did not hear noises squeaks, thumps, clacks, etc.!) The first day I drove the car after the new axles, I noticed a thump, thump, thump from the right wheel area when I made a sharp, slow turn out of my driveway. It only happened once, but it was a quick trip.
The next day, I noticed it again as I pulled out of my driveway and later as I pulled into a parking spot. There are no other symptoms and it only occurs when the wheel is turned to an extreme (80-90 degree) at little to no speed. I tested it in an empty parking lot - slow circles in either direction will cause the thump, primarily coming from the right wheel area. I immediately drove to the repair shop and made an appointment. Why I'd develop a new thump immediately after getting new axles? I'm thinking something isn't right with their installation. Of course, they say nothing is wrong with what they did - the problem now is that I need stabilizer links?! Sounds like BS to me - why all of a sudden do I need BOTH stabilizer links immediately after repair work?
I have a 2005 ford f150 supercab 4x4, and around feb I replaced all the ball joints my self, and now recently when back with the wheels turned turned to the left and then put it in drive and turn the wheels all the way right and give it has to take off there is a popping noise that comes from the driver side front wheel and it just does it once I take off and quit . I've looked and everything and cant see anything that would cause this. And know when I put it in park and it rolls forward I can hear a popping noise that sounds likes it coming from the rear end. I had my rear rebuilt, with new pinion bearing and race, a new axle on the pass side with bearing and the shop told me that it the driver side is questionable on the axle but it has new bearing also, they also told me that it needs a carrier case cause it had groves wore in it where the axle bearings wore out so much. at the time I could afford to have them to replace the carrier case. what would cause the popping from the front end and now the popping in the rear end.

Over the last few weeks I've noticed that when the truck has been parked for even a short time, when I start to move out I am getting a thumping noise from the rear, almost sounds and feels as though I am driving over small speed bumps, but once i get going it seems fine. Where to start?
View 5 RepliesMy friend has a 2005 Subaru Impreza RS (2.5 L) that just (today) started making what amounts to a clicking or thumping sound once the car reaches about 30 mph. I'm sure it does it at slower speeds, but I was unable to hear it. It is definitely in the front end. And seems to be coming from the drivers side. I asked if she had hit any large potholes recently, and the answer was no. Around three weeks ago she had studded snow tired mounted on the car. I don't think the tires are the issue. But perhaps the installation process may have played a part since the care was placed on a lift.
View 8 RepliesI have a 03 explorer with approx 160k, I am experiencing a thumping noise while driving. It gets worse on right turns and gets better on left turns. initially i thought LF wheel bearing so i ordered a hub assy and replaced LF. noise is still there. I guess, thumping noise caused by wheel bearings, i know its usually a grinding kind of whirring noise.
The noise doesn't seem to change with accel/decel so I don't think it is driveline related (diff, drive shaft etc.) should i bite the bullet and replace the rf as well??? I should also mention that there is also a shake in the steering wheel that seems to coincide with the thumping (i.e., my hand shakes along with the thumping, and the shake gets worse when the noise does)...
this is my brothers truck 05 f-150 4x4, i put brakes front and back and flushed the system about six months ago now. the other day when he was coming home from college the front passenger tire locked up. he drove it home and i went over took it apart nothing was sticking put it back together and it was fine. now today he call it stuck again so i just pulled it apart, pads are now purple from the heat, pins are free, caliper moves i put a small piece of wood in it and had him press the brakes the caliper moved out and i pused it back in, reinstalled everything and its not stuck no more. what do you think is causing this? my uncle says it could be the abs box acting up, when he bought the truck my dad made him buy the extended warrenty but he wont pay the 100 dollar deductible because this past winter we all went out in the two foot of snow and he got stuck so i pulled him out and our dad says thats what f$ucked his brakes up so now his is pissed. so how can i fix this for him? oh it only has 42k on it
View 7 Replies2005 FX4 truck. Doesn't click when going straight, but if turning wheel like turning into or out of a parking spot, it makes a clicking noise that gets faster as you get faster. It sounds almost like a baseball card in a bicycle spoke honestly. Don't know if its related, but about 3 months before i noticed the sound I had the Rancho quick lift struts installed on the truck. Somebody told me it could be wheel bearings but in my experience a wheel bearing will make a roaring noise, and it would roar while going straight down the road. This is only when turning the wheels. Also, it doesn't matter if you turn left or right, you can hear it both directions.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2005 f150 and it will not engage the front hubs. It is a manual shift on the fly not electric. I have done some checking and this is what i have found so far. Pull the lever into 4H, dash light comes on, IWE's do not lock onto axle. Same for 4L. The transfer case does come in when lever is pulled into either 4H or 4L. Front end up on jack stands, engine off. Turn either wheel and axle turns with it as it should. Start engine, turn either wheel and it is free from axle, as it should be. so there is vacuum going to IWE when engine is on. Not sure what to check next. Is the vacuum solenoid on the firewall bad?? Is there something not getting activated when i pull the floor lever back?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2005 Supercrew 4X2 with 110,000 miles on it. Lately I've noticed at 30 mph and up if I steer to the left I get a growling noise from the left front. When I straighten up or steer right it goes away. I don't feel anything in the steering wheel or seat of the pants...just this growling noise during a left steer. Tires are about half wore out...I went ahead and rotated them to see if the growl moved. It didn't, stays in the left front.
Does that sound like the bearings in the rotor are on the way out? It won't stop raining so I haven't had a chance to jack it up and see if I have I have play in that tire/wheel. I thumbed through my Haynes manual and it seems pretty straight forward to replace the rotor. New rotors/bearings, one time use nut, might as well do pads while I'm in there, torque nut to 275 ft. lbs. Am I on the right track? Any other way to diagnose this growl? Is the R&R of the rotor as easy as it sounds? Tips or trick, things I should know that Haynes isn't telling...
I have a 2005 Camry XLE. Since past few months I have started hearing a strange grinding / thumping noise from the front passenger side wheel. It can be clearly heard at slow speed and almost sounds like the wheel is lopsided and is rubbing against something. As the car picks up speed, the frequency picks up and the sounds disappears eventually.
So, I figured it must have been because the car had hit a curb few months ago and must have bent the rim. I had the wheels looked at while getting rotation and balancing done and was told that there is no rim damage. The sound went down a little after rotating the wheels but is still there. The mechanic doesn't think that it is the bearing because the sound disappears after moderate speeds. So, trying to figure out what could be causing the noise?
I gotta a roaring noise coming from my right front while turning. Planning on replacing just the wheel bearings tomorrow & not the whole hub assembly(2008 2wd). Is there a thread that lays out the steps and other parts I may need? I've seen alot different stories on the net on how to do it. Everthing from I can press new bearings to I have to do 4x4 hub conversion. Seems to be some confusion.

View 6 RepliesI have a 2005 F150 4x4, with just over 75K, and I have owned it from new. I am having left front brake issues. The left front brake seems to drag, but of course does not do it consistentally or after a given type of braking event. It just does it very randomly. I originally replaced the caplier pins thinking one may have been hanging up. It seemed to fix the issue for a couple months then it happened again. So doing more inquiry it seems some have had issues with the front rubber lines.
I just had both front lines replaced with OEM Ford parts and the system flushed out at a dealer. The brakes again seemed to work fine driving home from the dealer anto work today. Then on the way home it did it again, started dragging. The truck starts to feel sluggish while accelerating and slows very quickly just lifting off the gas. then when you get out you feel the wheel and it is very HOT and you can hear a heat popping sound. (First time it happened it was smoking it got so hot.) Right side seemsfine.
Since it does it so randomly I am at a loss. I can not just drop it off at the dealer and say drive it until it. I am considering having the caliper replaced, which I really considered when it was at the dealer for the hoses since I had the IWE's done at the same time, so they were off.
I have a 2005 F150 4X4, has 43,000 easy miles on it. When I started the truck I notices white smoke come fron the exhaust. It was a cool morning and the truck was sat for 24 hours, I have read some post about how that could be the reason. I was also told that adding a quart of lucas in place of one of the (motorcraft synthetic) quarts.
View 3 RepliesMy 05 f150 is lift with a 6" skyjacker lift I've only had it a week from the dealership when it stopped firing on cylinder 8 which is a lil problem easy to fix,but then it started clunking around turns in the front and rear end. So I took it the dealer and 3 days later they give it back. It's running good but its still clunking in the front they said they changed the cv joints and tie rod ends but after I got home. I inspected it they changed one damn tie rod and that was it. Is it the tie rod end that's still making the noise?
View 1 RepliesDealer replaced rack,twice. Still thumping,they installed new struts and 4 sway bar links and bushings same thump still there. I unhooked swap bar links and tied them to brake line and backed it out is my shop and thump is still there and sounds like both sides. This van has 56,000 miles on it and the ball joints and control arms feel and look tight. Is there anything about how frame mounts that might cause this?
View 2 RepliesI drive a 2005 Chevy Silverado. I only drive a few miles a day, to and from work. The truck has about 32,000 miles. Recently it has started making a thumping noise, but only randomly. From inside the truck, it sounds like someone is knocking from under my hood while other times there are no unusual noises. I opened my hood while it was making the thumping noise but couldn't hear it from outside the car. Doesn't seem to make a difference what I do - put it in drive, neutral, reverse, park, go fast, slow, stop.
View 5 RepliesMy 05 Supercrew 4X4 with 172k miles started making a horrible noise these last couple days. It sounds like its coming from the front passenger side area. The best I can describe is that it sounds like an electric tool motor with bad bearings. I'll be driving along at 45mph or above and every now and then I'll hear a really bad bearing squeal. It's bad enough that I can feel the extra friction caused by the squeal start to slow my truck down. It's vehicle speed related. I know what a bad wheel bearing sounds like and this is nothing like that. It's gotten bad enough I'm nervous to drive anywhere.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2005 F150 with the 5.4 in it and its getting ready to hit 90k here soon. I just bought the truck less than a month ago and Ive developed a very loud knock at idle. It sounds like it's coming from down in the oil pan. That's where I can hear it the best. When I give it gas and it reaches about 1400rpm it goes away to where I can't hear it. What would this be? I checked the oil level and its fine. I thought at first maybe it was just a heat shield from the cats loose and rattling but its gotten worse and louder. I'm not driving it until Monday when I take it back to the dealer because I still have some warranty left but I would like to know what I'm looking at maybe. This isn't the cam phasers is it? I've read somewhere that these motors don't get good oil pressure in the heads some places?
