Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: EBrake Grabbing In Reverse When Disengaged
Dec 28, 2014
99 f150 supercab LWB 2wd 5 speed with 4wheel disc. I just replaced the rear rotors, pads, ebrake hardware and ebrake shoes. I have the shoes adjusted in as much as possible. With the e brake pedal disengaged and backing up, the e brake shoes grab the rotors and try to stop the truck from backing up.
I have lifted the rear end and pulled off the star wheel cover and turned it back as far as I can. When I rotate the tire forward by hand its fine, but when I reverse the rotation I can see the star wheel move abruptly through the hole in the backing plate as the brakes grab the rotor. What to do next?
I put the star wheel in the way the last one came out, could it be backwards, does it matter? I should tell you that currently I only have 1 side (drivers) ebrake installed because I am missing a piece for the other side that I can't buy. Will be going to a junkyard soon. This should not cause what I'm experiencing though.

My truck was working fine and I drove it to school one day and I was driving and I noticed the RPM was high and the truck wasn't moving correctly luckily I made it home and parked it now it won't move at all I can shift into gears and I put it in first and reverse and let off the clutch and it doesn't move like the clutch is still disengaged. The Slave Cylinder is pressing against the pressure plate to disengage the clutch and then releasing. I have a single cab 1999 Ford F150 4.2 V6.

I changed my rear brakes this past weekend and noticed that since then I have an odd sound when I drive off.
So I will park the car and engage the ebrake. I will then return to the car after a while (overnight etc) and disengage the ebrake, then put it in reverse / drive and when i give it gas to drive off, BAAAM - it sounds like you hit something or ran over something. I can stop the car fully and drive off - nothing. If I dont use the ebrake - nothing.
What in the world could this be??? It is quite loud and really scared that crap out of me - like you hit another car or something.

Have a noise coming from the serpentine area. Sometimes it's a bit of a chirping, other times it's almost like a solid grind.
I pulled the belt off and the idler pulley had a bit of play so I replaced that. The tensioner pulley felt fine. I'm suspecting the fan clutch, as the noise only appears after the clutch has disengaged the fan (although it could be this is just masking the other noise because I've got a heavy duty / loud fan clutch setup).
How can I be sure that the fan clutch is the culprit before replacing it?

I have 2003 F150 SuperCrew 5.4L XLT. For past month or so, have been hearing metal rubbing sound and had shakes in braking - as well as a "grabbing and pulling" sound near brake pedal - very aggravating to say the least. Weird thing is the grabbing and pulling sound only happens under 10 miles an hour or coming to a complete stop. (The grabbing sort of sounds like the sound the ABS makes when hit really hard)
Yesterday I had brakes and rotors replaced - mechanic said front rotors were beyond turning - very bad. 135,000 miles on truck. Felt more comfortable until I pulled out of shop and when I applied brakes, had the same grabbing/grinding sound, but no pulling. Went back to mechanic and had him ride with me to hear sound, and he is stumped.
Knew it was safe(r) to drive since new pads/rotors installed, but when I got up to 55mph and barely touched the brakes, the steering wheel began to shake violently - but no sound/grabbing from brake pedal area like I get when I am 10mph or under. Really at a loss right now.. What's going on?
Truck is a 2WD, also hear some thump thump thump sounds from front left tire, which are only one year old, but tire man said that was from suspension arm or something - nothing to worry about he says.
Some people have said "bearing" or "hub" but when brakes were replaced, the bearings were repacked...is this the same thing? Is the current problem safe to drive with? I do not take vehicle out of the county - just to work and back and hunting on weekends.

Proud new owner of a 2001 7.3....today. The previous owner installed Warn standard hubs. I assume they work same as OEM with the exception that I have to get out and lock them, right? Also, when I test drove it, and after locking them, I engaged to 4x4 button and the 4x4 engaged and worked. However, when I disengaged my AC went to defrost just like my old 7.3. The AC eventually came back. Is this normal? I think it also went to defrost when I engaged. The AC does come back after a couple minutes after disengaging.

About a month ago I discovered one of my reverse lights was out on my 97 f150. So first thing I did was replace the bulbs then they both went out. So with my test light I checked the fuse and all sockets. All good there. Then I suspected the switch. So I bought a new switch. Nothing. Then checked the connector with the test light. Thought I found my problem there. So I bought a new connector and when I connect the wires, they only flick on once. Not even for a full second. I hear a click and I'm told the lights flick on once and that's it.

I have a 1997 Ford F150 4x4. I only have reverse gear, when you put into drive you have to rev up truck and then it will kick into gear & as long as you keep a little pressure on throttle it will stay in gear & shift fine if you let up on throttle it seems to go back into neutral & you have to start the the process all over. What is my problem? I have changed fluid & filter.

As the title says my abs light is on. My drive way is really steep so when i pull in before i put it in park i put on my ebrake because i heard that save ware and tear on the trany. Today when i got in it to leave I released the break and put it into reverse and i had nothing it wouldn't even role backwards. so i put it back in park and then into reverse again, and again nothing. so i revede it up a little and there was a huge clunk and then i had reverse but my abs light came on.

I have a buddy that has a 1998 f150 4x4 with 4.6l and 332836 km on it. It will go in to reverse but will not go in to drive at all. Is his transmission shot? Or is there anyway to test it to find out what the problem is.

In my 1998 f150 4.6L 5 speed manual. When I go to put it in reverse I get 1st instead, but if I do a second shift to reverse I get reverse. This happens on an average of once a week.
I know this can happen in FWD cars where you put it in one gear and get a different gear instead. Something to do with the shifting cable. But the f150 is RWD, the shifting problem only happens in reverse. Is this problem someone without ASE certificates can do, or without dropping the transmission?
I'll add to this so I don't start yet another post. Ive thought of the problem and if it was really going into 1st instead of reverse the problem likely would be bad enough it would just stay in 1st. Its possible that I am getting 4th gear when I go into reverse which tells me the clutch grabs really well, and its a problem I really need to fix, I don't know that much about transmissions but I do know if it keeps getting 4th instead of reverse, the clutch wont be so good pretty fast.

So ever since I bought my f150 about three months ago it makes a whining noise from the transmission while I am reversing it. What could be the cause of this? Should I bring it in for a trans flush and filter change? What would that run me?

Problem I am having with my 2000 4.6L truck. When the outside temps fall below about 40deg F, I have to rev the engine a little (approx 2100 rpm) in order to get the transmission to shift from park into reverse. If I don't do this, it bogs the engine down and the motor dies.
Once I am in gear, everything works normally. I have no codes or lights. I have tried a new IAC valve, checked and replaced the trans fluid and filter. This is a very strange issue to be having. It SEEMS like it might have something to do with fluid flow? Like maybe the transmission cooler is plugged partially?

I have an automatic 5.4L (L code) 2000 Ford F-150 and I am having problems with the reverse lights not working when I place the transmission in reverse. Fuse #5 in the passenger compartment fuse panel is good and both reverse lamps are good as well. I have also metered the LB/PK input wire at DTR sensor and it is reading 12 volts when the ignition is in the on position. I have also the metered the BK/PK wire output wire at the DTR and this wire also reads 12 volts when I place the transmission in reverse. I have checked continuity from the BK/PK wire at DTR to the BK/PK wire at the reverse lamp socket and I do not have continuity. I then ran a fused jumper wire from the BK/PK wire directly to the BK/PK wire at the reverse lamp socket and the lamps will light up when I place the transmission in reverse and will also turn off when the transmission is placed back in park. So it seems that the DTR is not defective. I'm not sure what else to check. Obviously the BK/PK circuit is open at some point between the DTR and the reverse lamp socket, but I'm wondering if there is something else that I need to check. The vehicle is also equipped with a factory trailer tow package

I have a 1998 f150 4x4, the truck has not been driven in a few years and it’s been outside in my driveway up on jack stands. I just rebuilt the front end and did a four wheel break job, after getting the truck off the jack stands, I can't get it to move in drive or reverse. I also noticed that when you go from reverse to park the gears grind and I can't even get it to shift into 4H. I checked the tranny fluid and it is fine, also the tranny was just rebuilt a few years before I stopped driving the truck.

The truck is a 2002 f150 4x4 5.4l... I was driving down the free way last night in 2wd doing about 90kpm when there was a loud bang like a ran over something. Speedo went to zero and abs light came on. Pulled over and shut it down. Crawled underneath to check so damage and couldn't see anything. Stared it back up put it in drive and it just revs. No forward gears or reverse. Fluid level is good, bright pink. Dropped the transmission pan, pan is clean and magnet has next to nothing on it.

I have a 2002 f150 with the 5.4 motor and a auto transmission and when I go in reverse the rear end makes a loud whining noise? The fluid level is fine. Should I add the gear oil additive to the rear end or change the rear end oil and add that? I am looking to sell the truck so what could cause this noise?

Just got a 98 f150 yesterday and I noticed last night when I went to shift into reverse, with the clutch all the way to the floor as I tried pulling the shifter back, it sounded like the clutch wasn't engaged at all. Shifting from all the other gears works just fine. Ive found that If the truck is off and I start it in reverse it works just fine.

Anything else that could cause reverse to go out of an automatic tranny other than the tranny being shot? I don't know of anything but any way to keep me from replacing a tranny.
