Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Horrible Noises From Timing Chain?

OK, my truck is making all kinds of horrible noises from the timing chain area. it is a 97 f150, 4wd with a 4.6. i know i need to replace it. BUT my question is, how long can i let it go before the chain breaks and sends valves into piston? And also what is the best timing set manufacturer? or are they all pretty good?

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Metallic Screech - Timing Chain?

I have a 4.2 with 330km (206k miles). Recently I have noticed some unfamiliar sounds that I'm trying to diagnose. First off, lately when starting the truck cold, it sometimes makes a metallic screech /clank-like noise. It just lasts for a moment when the engine catches, then disappears. Doesn't happen every time but has happened at least 1/2 dozen times the last couple of weeks. Sounds like metal gears colliding. Haven't noticed any drive-ability issues.

As well, I changed the oil a couple of days ago and when I stuck my head under the truck afterwards to check for leaks, I could hear a definite rattling / clattering noise from the area near the oil filter.

Does this sound like timing chain?

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Replacing 5.4L Timing Chains Without Crank / Cam Tools?

I planned on replacing the timing chains, tensioners, guides and oil pump when I replace the timing cover tomorrow, however, I overlooked was the specialty tools to lock the cams and crankshaft in position. I came up with a couple methods but wanted to know of some other way to replace the timing chains without the cam/crank tools?

Turning the crankshaft keyway to 12 o'clock instead of TDC : Positioning the crankshaft keyway at 12 o' clock will keep all pistons close to mid cylinder and essentially eliminate the risk of interference.
or
Neutralize the cams : Loosening the bolts on the cam bearing caps while still keeping them in place allows the cams to move without engaging the valves.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Timing Cover Cracked / Welded - Now Engine Starts Then Shuts Down

I recently removed my timing cover due to a coolant leak and found the cover was cracked. I had it welded and reinstalled but i did not remove the crank sensor from the cover while it was being welded. Now the engine starts but shuts right back down. Do the welding may have damaged the sensor and giving me this condition? 1997 4.2 ....

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: All New Timing Components And Now Loud Squeal Behind Timing Cover

My daughters 2004 f150 5.4 3v. 130k miles. Had a broken timing chain guide on passenger side. Changed phasers, solenoids, timing chains, crank gear, tensioners, and oil pump. Pulled pan and cleaned it and the pickup tube of pieces of the old guide. Engine had zero sludge. Very clean inside.

Put it all back together. Left crank sensor unplugged to rotate engine until it had good oil pressure which only took a few seconds. Plugged sensor back in. Truck started right up. Runs perfect. Drove perfect. Idles with no noise. But as soon as I rev it up a little, there is a HORRENDOUS squealing from the lower left of the engine. Pulled serpentine belt and squealing is still there. Used a stethoscope to determine its in the lower left behind the timing cover.

I haven't pulled the cover back off yet but what this could be? Everything went back together fine so I can't imagine what it is.

HOWEVER, I did notice that my new tensioners only had an oil hole in one of them. The two I removed both had an oil hole. So one of the new tensioners does not have an oil hole in the center of the plunger. I see online, that many did not come with an oil hole. But I'm wondering if this could be the source of the squealing? Maybe not oiling the chain enough and the squeal that I hear is the chain on the plastic guide?

Escort :: 1997 - Coolant Dripping Under Timing Cover

Recently the timing belt went on my '97 Escort. It had been dripping coolant from somewhere under the timing cover so I bought the timing belt/water pump kit thinking that this would solve the two problems. It only solved one. I'm still dripping coolant from somewhere under the timing cover.

Are there any freeze plugs or things that would leak under the cover? When I had it all apart, there were no visible leaks at least on the upper end that I could see easily.

Honda - Accord :: 1997 - Oil Leak Behind Timing Belt Cover?

I have a 97 Honda Accord with V Tec engine, 2.2L. I have an oil leak that is coming from BEHIND the timing belt cover. I removed the cover and the belts to expose several seals. The oil leak is quite extensive and leaves a good puddle after running the engine, however, it will not leak once I clean up the mess, put the car up on jack stands and disassemble the engine. I cannot tell which seal is leaking and am wondering how to tell which seal is leaking. Is there a way to apply pressure to the engine with air, possibly through the oil dipstick hole to possibly expose the leaking seal?

Chevrolet - S-10 :: 1997 - Timing Is Off / Engine Sound As If Bearings Are Knocking

Looking for a diagram on 1997 S10, 2.2 timing settings? If timing is off, will the engine sound as if the bearings are knocking somewhat? I installed a new crankshaft and new bearings. Also do the ignition coils usually go bad? Should the #1 cylinder be on the compression stroke?

Ford - Explorer :: 2003 - Valve Cover Oil Leak / Timing Chain Rattling

My 2003' Explorer XLT (4.0L V6) has an oil leak. I tracked it down to the passenger side, rear, bolt head on the valve cover (back by firewall). I took it to a guy who replaced the valve cover gaskets, but it is still leaking. He claimed when he had the cover off he looked for any cracks on it, but did not see any at the time.

Anyways, I was searching around and found several explorers leaking in or around the same area of the valve cover. And it turned out that there issue stemmed from bad timing chain guides, causing the valve cover to crack.

I do notice that on a cold start, I hear a rattling when I first start it up. It rattles for maybe that first 1-2 seconds when starting. Is this my timing chain rattling around? If that is the case, how much this could set a guy back on repairs?

I guess I don't know whether to just replace the valve cover, or if I should dig into it to see if the real issue is the timing chain guides/tensioner. Mileage is approximately 121,000....

I have a 2003 Eddie Bauer explorer with the 4.0L SOHC . I have a coolant leak from the passenger side that is not a water pump issue.

When removing the timing chain cover with the engine in the car, do I need to remove any accessories ( power steering , alternator etc. ) or their brackets?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Pulling Engine To Redo Timing Cover

So I'm getting ready to pull my engine to redo my timing cover.. my engine has over 320000 miles on it and it runs strong, dyno'd 402 hp at the wheels recently.. I was considering dropping a reman in since im pulling the engine anyway... I heard you can test for blow by buy sitting your oil cap over the spout and seeing if the cap blows off.. well the engine tilts downward in the back so the cap just slides off but in the dark when i shine a flashlight you can see the fumes just billowing out... how do i know if this is too much... what else can i do EASILY to see if my engine has issues before i start taring it down?

Honda - Accord :: 1997 - After Changing Timing Belt CEL Flashes / Won't Shifting Properly?

I took my 1997 Honda Accord with 97,000 miles to the Honda dealer for a 90,000 mile service and changing of the timing belt. I also had them replace some gaskets, some other belts and the axles as they were not holding fluid. When I got the car back the second time I drove it the check engine light came on and the car will not shift gears properly. When I start the car cold, put it in drive and accelerate the engine revs for a few seconds before the gears will engage.

This continues whenever I stop and accelerate. It also happens whenever the car is ready to switch to a higher gear. The engine revs past 3000 rpm and then will shift a second or two later. The dealer says I need to change a rebuilt transmission. The Bluebook on the car is only about $3000. I'm having difficulty evaluating the best course of action. What is the reliability of a rebuilt transmission?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Oil Temp Drops Like Rock On Decel Timing Effect?

Well I just completed a complete refresh of the fuel system. New injectors, IDM , UVC and UVCH, and glow plugs. (All Ford Parts)

I had my AE software running on the last drive and noticed the oil temp is quite erratic. The odd thing was, when I left off the pedal, it would drop 100 degrees. Once I got back into the fuel, the temp came right back up where I thought it should be (140-160) puling a 7000# Enclosed 8.5wide car trailer, in 30 degree weather.

The truck ran OK but seemed down slightly on power. I know the oil temp affects SOI timing, but what degree and how often does it sample, to make timing changes? I found a new one at an Oreillys and put it in, but no change. Wires do not seem to change OHM reading when wiggling them.

I will post pics from recording as soon as my kid brings my laptop back.

Toyota - Rav4 :: 1997 - After Replacement Of Timing Belt And Water Pump Noise Like Metal?

I had the timing belt, water pump and thermostat replaced on my '97 RAV4. The next morning while braking at a red light I heard a rapidly repeating sound that sounded like metal on metal. The car never made that sound again but now I'm hearing a noise coming from the passenger side of the engine (timing belt side). When the engine is cold I don't hear it. After driving a while its starts, then once the engine warms up it generally goes away (except for this morning which was the coldest morning since this started, temps in the 40s).

I was only hearing the noise when the car was stopped either in drive or reverse (reverse sounded louder) if I lightly let up on the brake pedal (there's no pulsing in the brake pedal). Once under way the sound goes away. This morning it was making the sound virtually every time I came to a stop (once the car warmed up) even with my foot firmly on the brake pedal. I recorded the sound Saturday while standing still with the car in drive and my foot slightly easing up on the brake pedal. The sound starts at the 20:30 mark, what it could be?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2003 GTI 1.8t Timing Belt Broken?

I recently purchased 2003 gti with a broken timing belt i bought a reman cylinder head did the timing belt, water pump, belt tensioner, cam chain, and cam chain tensioner. I read the service manual and many forums before setting the timing. I got it all set and back together it runs great at the low end but it feels like when it starts to build boost pressure it stops making power. Would i throw a check engine light if the timing was any off? Would it run well on the low end and then lose power if the timing was off or should i be looking in a diffrent direction? I just want to make sure timing is not an issue.
