When either of my front wheels drop during articulation they seem to bind up. the shop says nothing is wrong, but i beg to differ, b cuz when i jack the truck up enough to get a front wheel of the ground i can only turn it about 3 inches before it locks up. what is going on!
View 14 RepliesI have an 02 F150 super cab Fx4 with a 5.4 engine. Earlier this week my wife pulled up to a stop light and the truck began to buck and jerk while moving. She pulled over and we had it towed back to the house. I pulled into the garage and something felt off, my first thought was rear diff clutches(the truck has 92k). I backed it straight out of the garage the next morning and it was popping and binding while backing up, it would move a little then act like it was up against a curb, then hit the gas, it would pop and move a little more. I popped the rear cover off the diff and the fluid was clean, and I did not see any metal shavings in it. Next I removed the rear brake disc to check if the parking brake shoes grenaded, they are fine.
Right now I have the rear end on jackstands, I put the tranny in neutral and turned the driveshaft by hand in front of the diff. It will turn in one direction and then not go back the other way. Not to sound ignorant, but is that normal operation of the traction lock diff? Next thing, while turning the driveshaft by hand, there is a clicking noise coming from the transfer case area. I slid underneath and could hear it coming from the case. Is this noise normal? I have no other truck around here to compare too. I have used the search function here at the forum, I am just not finding my particular issue. The truck was not in 4wd when this happened either.
My 2001 f150 4x4 with a 4r70w start slaming hard. Once at speed in overdrive it ran fine. Then driving around 25 it would be fine for a minute or so then I could feel it binding up then a hard slam. Then it would drive fine for a minute and do it again. Mechanical? Electronic? Torque converter?
View 14 RepliesI recently purchased a 2003 Eddie with V8 and AWD. On turns everything was binding making the turn almost impossible to take. The front hubs have been replaced and it now has four new tires. This is a great deal as the Anti-lock sensors in the hubs were throwing a code and the bearings were shot. This made a difference but there is still some binding taking place. This truck is a daily driver so need to know where to go from here. I pulled two fuses that were listed as "4wd v-batt" but this made no difference so I put the fuses back. My mechanics Snap-on modis computer doesn't find any codes at present, so we are confused. Nice vehicle, but this is driving me crazy.

View 14 Replies2004 xlt scew 5.4 Have a noise when rear axles goes over bumps no noise when front end goes over them. Sounds like a piece of wood bounceing in the back when going over rail way tracks. its not a metal on metal sound.
Cant find any thing broken or loose. I know if the spare is loose it will make that sound but its tight. What could be loose.?? Heat shields all seem tight.
I have a 2005 f150 and it will not engage the front hubs. It is a manual shift on the fly not electric. I have done some checking and this is what i have found so far. Pull the lever into 4H, dash light comes on, IWE's do not lock onto axle. Same for 4L. The transfer case does come in when lever is pulled into either 4H or 4L. Front end up on jack stands, engine off. Turn either wheel and axle turns with it as it should. Start engine, turn either wheel and it is free from axle, as it should be. so there is vacuum going to IWE when engine is on. Not sure what to check next. Is the vacuum solenoid on the firewall bad?? Is there something not getting activated when i pull the floor lever back?

At first I thought they were talking about the one in the truck but I would guess the truck brake controller can handle atleast three axles worth of brakes. Now I am wondering if I have another "control box" on the camper somwhere.
I see many people pulling 3 axle trailers and I would assume you have brakes on all 3 axles. Am I good to assume the stock Ford brake controller can handle 3 axles with brakes on all of them ??
Does a trailer/toyhauler/camper have another "control box" somwhere that regulates the brakes as well ??
While driving the other day and making a slow sharp turn, like a u turn, I felt my wheels binding like they were in 4WD. I got under the truck and I could not turn my front axles freely. I jacked each side up independently and I could spin each tire and the axle would turn as well.
I thought being out of 4WD that the axles would turn freely? Mine do not.
I have ESOF and my hubs are turned to AUTO.
Is this normal or do I have an issue with my hubs or transfer case?
My 02 F-250 (week end truck) has begun to start showing a lot more surface rust on frame and axles. It's about half rust and half black frame. Are there any products that I can spray or brush on that will convert and stop this. ?

View 13 RepliesI've had occasional issues the last year getting my 04 into 4WD, but at 270K on the original IWE actuators, that's probably to be expected.
I had new actuators ready to install, but took the truck out for a drive before doing the job. On a gravel road the back tires spun easily in 2WD, I switched over to 4wd and it was much harder to spin the tires- you could tell it was in 4WD- or at least seemed that way. I left it in 4WD and tried turning on a tar road and it didn't seem like it was binding at all. (I have an open diff in the rear, assume the front is the same?)
Anyway, I installed new actuators last night and took it out for another drive afterwords. I put it in 4WD and could IMMEDIATELY feel the binding when turning.
What I cant figure out is why I could NOT feel binding while in 4WD prior to the install. Could I have been in 3WD somehow? (04 Super Crew, Automatic, 4.6L, XLT- pretty basic pickup...)...
Well it seems the transmissions POOCHED. It feels like its binding especially in reverse, and makes a whining sound in park/neutral. I guess, I will take it to the trans shop tomorrow and hope for the best....
View 7 RepliesI put a used AOD in my 1981 F 100. The throttle valve seems to be binding up even with the linkage disconnected. There is no pressure on the TV port. The truck will move in all gear positions, but it will not shift.
View 3 RepliesMy truck has developed a bad habit when it is cold (as in outside air below freezing and engine cold): The accelerator pump arm rubs against the throttle arm hard enough to bind the throttle partially open (NEVER a good situation!). I've removed the carb and verified that everything "looks" right:
1) The throttle shaft is in the right location and doesn't have any side to side movement.
2) The accelerator pump arm pivot is straight
3) The accelerator pump arm is straight (It's design makes it a bit difficult to just "bend" the arm side to side and I shouldn't have to do that anyway...)
4) The throttle arm is straight
After taking the arm off and straightening it out (repairing my attempts at a "field" repair...), verifying the linkage and then reinstalling and adjusting the AP, everything was working perfectly on the bench (kitchen table...), so I went ahead and reinstalled the carb (always fun at 10:30pm when it is 7F outside and the freaking wind is blowing at 30mph!).
By the time I got everything bolted down and hooked back up, the carb had cooled off a LOT, and the linkage was once more binding. I have no doubt that if I bring it in and let it warm back up, it will work perfectly.
So, what could be the problem? Do I just need to say the heck with it and hit the side of that lever with a file to get the cold clearance it just doesn't have? I can't imagine that this is a common problem with Holley 4160 carbs...
I've noticed my front axles are rotating all the time even when the hubs are in auto and supposed to be unlocked when in 2wd. Is there a rebuild kit for these so they will unlock the axles or do I need to buy new locking hubs?
View 14 RepliesI have a 2015 F350 6.7 DRW King Ranch with approx 12800 miles on it and have recently developed driveline noise which sounds like the rear axle is binding when backing up to the right. The truck has the 3.73 limited slip differential. Not sure what could be causing this. The front hubs are in "Auto" and the truck is not in 4-wheel drive. I don't notice the noise when moving forward, only when backing up to the right or left. Never noticed the noise when backing in a straight line. For whatever reason, when backing up to the left, the binding noise is not as prominent as when backing up to the right. Binding noise is most noticeable when front wheels are turned hard to the right.
View 14 RepliesI have an 07 f150 base model truck, manual 4x4 no push button. It seems something is binding in the hub once in awhile. I am driving down the road and all of a sudden i hear a loud squealing from the front drivers side. I slow down and then something seems to engage when I am almost stopped. I did a little research and have come up with the actuator might be bad. I just don't wanna throw parts at it that it don't need. Here's a lil more info. Last winter I put it in 4 wheel drive and the passenger side was making the same noise with the 4x4 not working when I hit the gas. I am thinking actuators need replacing on both sides.

Is this the intermediate steering shaft? I just want to be 100% sure that I get the right thing before I buy it, as it's a dealer only part.
Just replaced a badly worn Hub on my 98 AWD Explorer. The grinding noise is gone but now the steering is binding/shaking during stopped or low speed turns. What is going on or what I might have done wrong?
View 3 RepliesSo I've visited the dilemma of trying to replace my axles 4 times now... going on a 5th... apparently, my car is one of a kind, its a 2000 5 speed 1.8t fwd... so my issue... the axles for the 2000 5 speed 1.8t are not right, no where near close! The v6 manual axles have the wrong hub end, but the correct tranny side..... the 1.8t automatic axles... are about 4 inches too short but everything else is right..
