03 F150 2WD-I dropped tranny pan, changed filter, reassembled, put in 4 qts fluid. Checked dipstick, seemed to be overfilled, despite instructions to add 5 qts. Started truck, put it in reverse, went about 4 feet and then tranny wouldn't engage-ran it through all gears, just acts like in park or neutral. Over or Under filled???
View 4 RepliesI am having a problem with my 1998 F150 4x4. The 4WD is not engaging. It is a manual shift. I have checked the transfer case by turning the drive shaft in 2WD it is free. When I shift into 4WD it is does not spin freely. So I believe that is OK. I have checked the vaccum diaphram. It will move the piston when I attach a hose and pull vacuum on the inboard hose barb. So I believe the diaphram it self is OK. I am not sure if the hoses and selenoids are OK. They look fine. However there is a constant vacuum on the inboard hose line (red/pink color) wether I am in 4WD or not. Is this OK? How can I check the selenoids. If all this is OK, the next thing I believ it could be is the shift fork in the differential. Is that a difficult job? Do you need to pull the whole axle out to replace it?
View 14 RepliesI have a 03 4x4 5.4lt supcab with 154k miles. I replaced the shift motor about 40,000 ago but it has always been tempormental like I had to engage it in 4lo in N and then shift to 4hi to keep it in 4hi. Now fast forward to today. Went to shift to 4lo in N and it didn't shift. I only heard the relays click once and then it wouldn't shift into any gear even though the indicator was on PRND123. Didn't matter.
Also, Park didn't engage and the speedometer acted like it was engaged in RN and D. No movement what so ever. I think it might be the shift motor that shifted part way and is stuck in between gears. Is this possible? I drove fine to the dirt road and I haven't had problems other then the shift motor being touchy. I don't want to pay for a new tranny if it might be the shift motor.
I have an 01 4x4 Ext cab with the 5.4 auto. It just started to shudder in drive doing about 20-35 mph, it quit when I turned the OD off and has not come back yet. It also jumps in and out of OD while running highway speeds, kind of like hitting a bump or something like it. The shudder was in about 10 degree temps and not fully warmed up and the jump happens whenever I am at speeds around 60-75.
View 7 RepliesFound out the hard way that the 4wd does not work on this new stupid truck. I've been troubleshooting the solenoids and confirmed that the 2wd solenoid gets grounded and will read ~12V when switched to 4wd; however, the 2wd solenoid always remains grounded and will always read 12V across the plug no matter if it's in 2wd,4hi,4lo. What would cause this? It seems that I would have vacuum going to the front differential from both the 2wd and 4wd solenoids at the same time, thus not allowing it to go into 4wd. BTW, this is on a '98, 4.6, turn dial 4wd
View 14 RepliesI was out on the lake last night and after getting stuck in 6" of hard packed snow, I discovered that my 4WD is not engaging. When engaging 4WD, I do hear 2 clicks several seconds apart. I've checked the lines from the solenoids to the actuator and did not find any cracks. I have not checked the lines for vacuum yet but...
Last winter while engaging 4WD, I heard a load POP from the front end when I was turning the wheel and engaging 4WD. Ever since then, I haven't been sure if its been engaging but it was confirmed yesterday on the lake. Based on what I've read, I assume its either the actuator or the shift fork. Is it possible to remove the actuator and test it without disassembling the entire front end?
I went under the truck and had my wife engage and disengage the 4WD. The actuator was trying to move (maybe 1/16" inch) but the shift fork wasn't moving. Does this mean the shift fork is bad (frozen) or does this mean the actuator is bad (not enough power to move the fork)?
How much tranny oil it will take for just a pan drain and filter change, 2000 f 150, 7700, 4x4, 5-4....
View 3 Repliessoo a friends 03 f-150 w/ the 4.6 has noticed the a/c compressor clutch engaging while heater is on. clutch engages for about 3 seconds or so and kicks back out consistently but only w/ the heater on. a/c dose function property when using a/c functions... Is this normal or does something need serviced???
View 3 RepliesI have an 03 f150 supercrew that had a 4.6L. I am installing a 3.9 Cummins diesel. I will have a separately mounted transmission cooler. I'm using the stock radiator as these engines run cool. It has a transmission cooler built into it. If i just leave the fitting loose, will it cause me any problems. It is a plastic can on each end and i suppose it to have contact with the radiator passages.
View 7 RepliesI just had my tranny rebuilt it doesn't shift hard all the time but it does from time to time going from 2nd -3rd and 3rd -4th I thought being new it may need to soak up some fluid so the bands can swell so I ask the shop that rebuilt it that question he said they soaked them as they rebuilt it so they should be swollen already then he proceeded to tell me it was electrical is he telling me the truth because the ck engine light isn't showing any faults and if it was electric shouldn't that have been fixed in the shop while it was being rebuilt if it was interior electronic?

It does work,but to get it to engage I had to drive in reverse for a couple feet then it locked it and everything was fine,pretty sure that isn't normal. What could be wrong with it? As soon as I turn the lights up on the dash,but the front tires don't spin.
View 1 RepliesI just got a 99 Ford f150 with the 4.6. I am having problems getting the four wheel drive to engage. I turn the on the dash and the lights come on for four high and for four low. I have a 00 four by four and it works fine, so I know how to work it. In the 99 I can hear the transfer case engaging and everything clicks just fine just like it's going into fourwheel drive, but the front end is not pulling. The front drive shaft is turning but still the front end is not engaged. What the problem may be?

This has happened before, and when I took it to the shop, they called me and said the A/C works just fine. They did not tell me why the A/C stopped engaging or what they did. I tried to locate a relay fuse, but I can't find it.
View 5 RepliesI have the dreaded slip yoke clunk, I used the FORD SPEC PTFE lube and it works for a while until the tranny fluid that makes its way onto the slip yoke dissolves it!! Replacing the slip yoke with an updated one?

View 6 RepliesMy 4 wheel drive is not engaging on a 2001 F150. The indicator lites on the dash illuminate to suggest that the truck is in 4 wheel drive but sigh...it stays in 2 wheel drive. No gross sounds and the indicator lights are not flashing. Could this be a fuse or a relay issue of some sort. What else should I try?
View 3 RepliesI Have a 1998 f150 4.6 XLT and recently it has been starting on and off. sometimes i will try and start it and wham! it starts right off. then other times I just here the starter hitting and engaging but nothing. Replaced the starter, solenoid and still nothing. It does have an alarm system but the alarm light doesn't come on, also had battery charged and its working fine. I am really fed up with this beautiful looking POS. Oh and the wiper motor needs replace.
View 5 RepliesI have a 97 f150 (built 96 as 97 model), 4.2l 4x4, auto tranny. Here's the problem, when I turn my key forward to run position my starter kicks on and starts the truck, and stays engaged. I have a constant 14v at the signal wire on the starter relay (yellow red stripe). Also tranny started to slip, od light flashing. I replaced ignition lock cylinder, ignition/ starter switch, starter relay, starter, and today transmission range sensor (neutral safety switch 8 pin), same problem. Cel code that I had 2 days ago was P0707 tr sensor low input.

Took the family down to the beach today. Had some tough sand to get across in a few areas to move away from the crowds. Got a little dicey and the truck got stuck in 2WD. Switched to 4WD but back tires kept spinning. Couldn't figure out why and the truck started to dig deeper in the sand. Got a little nervous and I didn't want to start the day off with having to get pulled out.
Got out of the truck, locked the hubs in manually and I was out, no problem. Left the hubs locked until we left the beach and back on pavement.
What might be the problem and why the "shift on the fly" switch on the dash didn't seem to engage the 4WD? I even tried to switch into 4L and back to 4H (truck in neutral, break pedal compressed) and still no workie. Only manually locking the hubs would engage the 4WD.
