My 4 wheel drive is not engaging on a 2001 F150. The indicator lites on the dash illuminate to suggest that the truck is in 4 wheel drive but sigh...it stays in 2 wheel drive. No gross sounds and the indicator lights are not flashing. Could this be a fuse or a relay issue of some sort. What else should I try?
View 3 RepliesI have a 2000 F-150 4x4 and the four wheel drive isn't working properly. It does work,but to get it to engage I had to drive in reverse for a couple feet then it locked it and everything was fine,pretty sure that isn't normal. What could be wrong with it? As soon as I turn the lights up on the dash,but the front tires don't spin.

I'll start with truck specifics. 2001 Ford Expedition, 5.4, automatic, 141,000. We just got the truck 4 months ago, second owners. Seemed reasonably maintained, other than Ball joints.
This afternoon, my wife and I were cruising along on this warm 90 degree summer day, out running some errands and having a good time ( we both had today off) about 70 miles from home. When we pulled into one of our spots, I noticed a few drips heading in the direction of under the truck. i simply thought the AC, which had been running full blast for an hour, was dripping, not a huge deal. didnt think twice, a few drops, no biggie. We ran a few other errands, then got back on the highway going 70 MPH. I heard a low moan at 70 that would come anbd go, I thought I may have had a tire howling on the road or possibly the start of the shifted belt. Noise was intermittent, but went away after a few minutes of driving. another mile or two down the road, I noticed the rear window seemed oily. Suddenly, things began to click, oil blow on the back window, funny noises, drips, something was leaking.
My eyes darted to the gauges, everything was holding up as i made it to the nearest exit another few miles away. As I hit the exit, i noticed the overdrive on off indicator flashing at me on the shifter stalk. I roll to the stoplight at the end of the ramp, suddenly, the tranny slips. There was no slipping on the highway. the truck did get a grip and get me from the light a few hundred feet ( there was a line of traffic behind me) to a parking lot where I could stop and inspect. as i shut it off and peeked under, fluid was pouring out of the bellhousing of the transmission. i called pops, he brought down the truck and trailer and we winched it on, dragged it home.
So, now the truck in in my garage, on the lift (yes, im spoiled) and I'm surveying the damage. oil leaks seem to be directed only from the bellhousing area, other places only have blow by residue on them. Fluid is a little dark, but not burnt smelling, and within tolerance. I see darker fluid at work when I do transmission flushes all the time.
So, now the questions. First off, I would be guessing that the front pump seal decided to go out, does that sound correct to you gentlemen? I'm going to start digging in on removing the transmission tomorrow, and hopefully get it out by the weekend. Also, from the fluid condition, do you think I got lucky, or do you think I did damage to the transmission?
As for knowledge and resources, I'm a mechanic, I do mostly brake, suspension, exhaust, and maintenance work (oil changes, tranny flushes, other stuff like that) so I do have a decent knowledge base, and while I have swapped transmissions before, I dont have a huge knowledge of tier inner workings. I do have access to a scan tool, and other diagnostic instruments, but as i stated before, not a full working knowledge.
I just got a 99 Ford f150 with the 4.6. I am having problems getting the four wheel drive to engage. I turn the on the dash and the lights come on for four high and for four low. I have a 00 four by four and it works fine, so I know how to work it. In the 99 I can hear the transfer case engaging and everything clicks just fine just like it's going into fourwheel drive, but the front end is not pulling. The front drive shaft is turning but still the front end is not engaged. What the problem may be?
View 4 RepliesI reprogrammed my computer, to get rid of a bad tune with the Ford Program. After reprogramming, and entering in my tire size/gear size my speedometer and odometer no longer work. Also my overdrive light is flashing. Does this truck have a PSOM and could that be bad? What else could cause the problem, it definitely happened when it was flashed. Whats the cheapest way to fix it?
View 9 RepliesI have read through the folders and many websites on 4x4 problems. My problem has to deal with my four wheel drive not wanting to engage. It has nothing to do with the front end or solenoids. When I put it into 4x4, hi or low it will not send any power to my transfer case motor. It wont even illuminate any lights on the selector switch. I have checked all fuses and replaced any relays that have to do with the 4x4. Where I should go with this?
View 7 RepliesI have a 2005 F-150 with ESOF. When I turn the switch to 4x4 or 4low the lights on the dash will turn on but the front tires will not turn. I checked all the fuses and they were good. I'm not very familiar with this 4x4 system, what the issue is or on how to fix it?

View 4 RepliesI have a 98 f150 4x4, 4.6L 150k miles, during start up the blinker indicator lights on the dash illuminated and stayed on, when trying the blinkers they did not work, but if I shut the head lights off the blinkers do work and indicators respond normally. This is the same if I turn the fan blower on, blinkers don't work and indicators stay illuminated. Also I have found that the power windows, and 4wd no longer work. Other functions work such as power mirror, radio etc. all fuses under the dash and under the hood are good, I tried switching some of the relays to see if that changed anything but with no success . took the kick panel off and inspected the grounds and all seem tight. It looks like the main battery ground is just to the body and there is one solid ground from the frame to the body under the cab. all seem tight and don't appear to be corroded. Truck starts and runs great.
View 8 RepliesMy truck is trying to start its self the lights flash and one of the relays makes a loud buzzing sound. I can take the relay out the sound stops but they truck still tries to start/lights flash.
My wife has been saying she's been hearing a clicking as she drives it coming from the drivers side somewhere she thinks under the dash. But at this point nothing happen. And it had not been raining any when this was happening not for a long time.
The first time anything mechanical happen was only the lights came on and stayed on and drained my battery about a week after wife heard the clicking noise. I recharged the battery and chalked it up to my wife maybe bumping the light switch slightly causing them to stay on and not auto on and off. truck ran fine for a couple of weeks then wife drove it again the other day and after she got home she called me at work saying it was making a bad buzzing sound lights were on and its trying to crank, while it was sitting in my driveway with no one in it (sacred her to death).
That day it was raining. Now I had a small drip coming from driverside window inside so I thought maybe went down on my fuse box. So today I tried to get it out but having a hard time getting cables to disconnect so i left it and inspected really well and it does not appear to have been wet at all. Dust on top no water trails or marks same from side bottom and in the fuse holder. So i really don't know whats going on. Maybe still is fuse box?
2000 f150 5.4l 4x4 ......
1998 F150 ....Left signal lights flash supper fast or not at all but if I pull the arm down (for left side again) but stop before it clicks in place, signal lights work normal. 4 ways work good; right side works good 95% of the time; all bulbs are good. So like Spotty suggested it's the signal arm switch? Does that sound right? Many years ago I changed it twice in my old Ford Taurus; twice because I was buying used from a wrecker.
View 6 RepliesMy truck is a 2007 F-350 DRW. I'm not sure when,because I don't use it much in Texas, but My Four Wheel Indicator lights on the dash quit working. I don't see them in the dash at startup either. I'm not sure if the four wheel drive is coming on at all. There is probably a way to check that without driving off into a mud bog, right? Anyway I have looked for blown fuses etc, no luck yet. (15amp#33 under dash and 30amp#3 under hood). These are according to my manual.

View 6 RepliesI have a 2000 ford f-150 4 wheel drive that will not disengage, I am down here in south fla where and don't put it in 4 wheel drive much, but yesterday I put in 4 wheel drive and I heard the click click and it engaged I put it in drive and drove it about 5-10 miles parked it and turned the switch to 2 wheel high and got out , got back in the truck turn her back on and the 4 by 4 lamp came one went off then came back on and stayed on and it still in 4 wheel drive and wont disengage.

My 2011 F350 is not engaging 4wheel drive from the dash switch. When I turn it to either hi or lo it says "shift in process" but no 4 WD. It will engage manually from the hub lock, no problem. I know very little about 4wheel drive but am otherwise mechanically knowledgeable.
