Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2000 - Low Oil Pressure / Little Noise Like The Top End Not Getting Oil
Dec 19, 2013
I am having an oil pressure issue on a 2000 F-150, 4.6L.
I recently put a new set of heads on the motor because of some valve damage. Anyways. The oil pressure gauge in dash would sit at around 3/4.. Drive it a couple miles and every time you would get back to idle (stop sign) it would drop to zero and the light would come on.
You could also hear it make a little noise like the top end wasn't getting oil. (Didn't run at idle long..) I figured it was obviously starved of oil so I put a new oil pump, timing chains/guides/tensioners on. (Which I probably should have done with the heads.) Same issue resulted, but no funny noises when the gauge drops off.
Suspecting that the sensor may be faulty and the dash gauge being useless anyways, I dug an old mechanical gauge out of a box and installed it. I'm getting similar oil results. (Under 25psi it seems.) I'm not sure if the gauge has just gone to crap over the years of being in a box. However, the previous low-oil pressure issue seems to confirm it's not the gauge.
I cleaned the oil pickup when I had the motor apart. It didn't seem dirty, but I sprayed it out regardless. The motor looked fairly fresh when I had it apart. Bearings looked solid, cylinder walls even looked freshly honed. From what I hear, the motor was a low-mileage replacement.
So what could cause a low-oil pressure issue? Bearings seem fine, oil pump is brand new.

I have a 2001 Ford F150 4.6 liter V8 Super Crew. I use Castrol full synthetic oil and Fram filters...changing oil about every 10,000-12,000 miles and change filter at half way point.
Here is my issue: I noticed a slight rattle on passenger side of engine a few weeks ago but engine ran well & I wasn't sure if it may be a pulley from AC compressor or something else. It wasn't bad at all...more like a ticking sound.
Yesterday I drove to work with no problem and when I got ready to leave 9 hrs later, I noticed rattling was getting worse. I ran about 2 or 3 miles down the road and my oil pressure flatlined and light came on. This is the 1st time it has ever happened. By this time the rattling sounded bad, almost like it broke something on both sides of engine around valve cover area.
I pulled over immediately and had truck towed to shop down the road from my house, When my mechanic started it up this morning it had oil pressure and rattling was not near as bad. I put a new oil filter on it & topped off oil. He could not get to it today so I drove it home today for the weekend and by the time I got home (3 miles) it did same thing...flatline, oil pressure light on and rattling with no power (very sluggish).
I did notice the oil pressure light came off & on and gauge went up and down a couple of times before I shut it down. What the problem is? Oil pump maybe? I just didn't think oil pumps usually fail.

'97 F150 4.6L 4wd automatic... My gauge jumps around, sometimes it works and other times it shows no pressure. Could that be the oil pump? Or is the gauge most likely bad? Whats the actual purpose of an oil sending unit?

2000, F-150, 35K +original miles. 4.6L V8
Some weeks ago a noise started that sounded like fan blades striking against heavy plastic fan guard. At first I thought it was coming from the transmission/Transfer case area but after a few weeks of listening to I now believe it's coming from behind the dash area, however, I can't find any reason for it be from there.
The noise usually starts around 45 MPH
I checked the heater fan and it appears to be Okay. I don't know of any other fans in that area.

2000 Ford f150 4.6 ... I am hearing two things one is a noise from the left side of the car it sounds like air being let out. The second I think I already figured out but its chirping I think its the harmonic balancer because it took so long until it started spinning and made a chirping noise because it sounds lower than the belt tensioner which I already replaced, along with the alternator, and the belt.

I have a 2000 F150, 94k miles, manual transmission, 2WD
About 6 months ago a slight squeaking sound started when only backing up. Now its progressed to a sort of grinding metal on metal sound with regular driving as well as in reverse. I can hear it the most when its in gear and I take my foot off the gas. I changed the breaks, checked the wheel bearings, did a clutch test, and the u joints look fine. Something weird happened yesterday, while raining out, it didn't make a peep. My drive shaft and u joints have a layer of rust on them...could that be a cause of the noise, and it went away when wet?

I have a 2003 4.6l f150 164000 miles. While back oil pressure dropped to 0. Then chattering. Then up then down. I changed the oil and filter, then flushed the motor, then changed the oil and filter again. 1500 miles, no problems, no chatter. Then all of a sudden it happens again. Oil level good and clean. Oil pump?Pick up tube?

I changed the sending unit and replace the oil filter with a motorcraft unit and still can't get the oil gauge to read pressure. Since it is a gear oil pump I don't believe it is the pump.

I have an 01 F150 Lariat Supercrew 4x4 with the 5.4 Triton. The truck has 222,000 miles on it. Recently, I have noticed that when I am stopped at a stop light/stop sign while in gear, the oil pressure gauge drops to zero and the light comes on. As soon as I let off the brake and give it gas, it pops back up to normal. While driving, the needle never moves and stays consistent until I stop again, and back down to zero it goes.
If I put the truck in Park, the pressure goes back to normal. Same with neutral. It seems it is hit or miss and does not do this all the time, but I just wanted to see what your thoughts are. After doing some research I am leaning towards an oil pressure sensor/sending unit.... The truck runs perfectly fine, I just want to make sure it is not something more serious.

How do you get to the oil pressure switch on a 1998 F150 4x4? I can see it over the top of the front axle but can't find any way to get my hand in to unplug the sensor wire. Do you have to unbolt and drop the axle down a couple of inches?

I have a 2000 F150 with 4.6l triton 125k miles. i have a bad miss ONLY between 1500 and 2000 rpm. This will happen in any gear and in neutral, but only between those rpm's. seems to happen more constant in warm weather. This miss is so bad it feels like the transmission is going to fall out. but since it does it in neutral i doubt tranny problems. things I've replaced: fuel filter, tranny fluid and filter, crankshaft pos. camshaft pos, TPI, MAF, spark plugs, Ignition coils ( all 8) cleaned throttle body ( found 1 EGR port clogged completely )..
I had a couple codes but nothing constant. Been working on this for about 1 year. Codes p0320 (ignition speed input error) p0262 (injector circuit high cylinder #1). my only question here is...... What would only make this dang engine miss between 1500 and 2000 rpm. motor runs perfect thru all other ranges. idle... high speed.. and even throttling through this bad range is ok.. but when stabilizing between 1500 and 2000 starts jerking and missing like no fuel and no fire. i have put in superchip program couple years ago and it ran fine for about 1 year, then this trouble started... I have put back to stock program but still trouble.

I've got a '98 F150.throwing codd 402, excessive flow EGR, also the oil pressure drops to absolute zero only when gear shifts but comes right back up. No knocking or other distress sounds in engine. I know I'm in need of an oil change. I already searched a bit and decided to swap out the DPFE sensor which I did purchase from the dealership. No code as of yet but what could that pressure drop be? Could a simple il change and filter fix that?

2002 F150, 4.6 V8, 140k miles. Oil level good, oil was changed 2 months ago.
Driving along one day, out of the blue oil pressure light comes on, oil pressure gauge went to zero.
Engine did not run hot, no bad engines noises that I can hear.
Upon restart, oil pressure will be up on the gauge for minute or so, then goes to zero and oil light comes on.
Asked around, some say oil pump, some say oil filter or pickup tube.

this winter i have found that my truck's heater core isn't flowing, meaning i have hot on the upper hose and the lower is luke warm and there is no heat while running down the road. I have changed the t-stat and the heater core and radiator are new as of four years ago. last year i could roast a chicken with the heat. i also have no pressure in the radiator hose at all, engine runs at normal temp, no over heat situation and i don't smell any loss of antifreeze.

I am still battling a p0171 code on my 2000 f150 5.4. I checked the fuel pressure at idle it sits at 31. I remove the vacuum line off the regulator it goes to 41. When i give it throttle when in gear it will maintain at 30. And when I shut the vehicle off completely it will maintain 38. Just looking to see if this is correct numbers. I was trying to determine a weak fuel pump.

I was driving home last night and when I stopped at a light in town, I notice the oil pressure dropped and the light came on. So I pulled over and put in park to check my oil. As I put in park the pressure went back up. I dropped it back into gear and it went back down. What could be causing this? I check my oil and it was full. I also notice when I put it in gear and speed up the pressure goes back up and stays there till I slow down again.

I bought a 2002 f150 4x4 with a 4.6l. It has 250k miles on it. a couple days ago. It had no problems at all during the test drive or for the 150 miles home. Yesterday after it warmed up, the oil pressure dropped to 0 while at a red light and had a rattling noise. Not a knock but more of a rattle. I can't isolate where the rattle is coming from. Oil pressure comes back with just the slightest of increase Of RPM and seems To have plenty of power while driving. I had read to check the pressure manually but with the noise I sense there truly is a problem. the oil appears clear and is full. What I should be checking on this.

Just recently got a sweet deal on an 01 Lariat with a very low mileage 5.4L. I almost didn't purchase it because the oil pressure gauge will not read when you start the engine. Sometimes it will sometimes not.
When it does read, it is just past half which is the normal reading. When it doesn't read, it shows zero and the light is on. The engine runs fine either way, and the previous owner said it has been that way for years. The engine has been well cared for, and has been running Mobile 1 full synthetic for most of the 80k miles. The oil was not overly dirty at purchase, so I figured it to be a loose connection. I suffer from the cold solder joints that these trucks are plaqued with, as evident by the intermittent odometer reading. Do you think the oil gauge issue is the same thing? A cold solder joint? Or should i just start with a new sender?

I have a 97 F-150 with just over 300,000 miles. I lost all oil pressure and know I need to replace the main bearings. Must I pull the engine to do so?

My launch scanner reported a bad oil pressure switch, but I've replaced that, and when I did the oil pressure light went away, but my gauge still didn't work. Could it be a faulty switch? Or is it common for gauges to stop working on these fords seeing how there's a resistor to trick the gauge from the factory anyway? If I smack my dash the gauge will raise and lower. But I think that's normal.
