I have a leak on the right side of the cross over pipe. I removed one long bolt from the right side and two long bolts from the left side that go through the thermostat housing, and three bolts from the back of the alternator, but the pipe doesn't seem to want to move. I don't want to break anything.
View 2 RepliesI have a 1990 F-150 w/351 that I knew had a coolant leak at the back of the engine when I bought. It's a tinker around truck, something for me to play with.
I've traced the leak back to a metal tube/pipe that sticks out of the engine compartment just below the AC housing. I cannot find anything in the Haynes manual or a diagram on the intertron that shows what this is and if it should have a hose on it or...?
I'm trying to figure where the coolant leak is. Appears to originate on the driver's side front, right near the thermostat housing. Since the engine tilts back the entire drivers side is wet. The thermostat gasket appears to be OK, but it does have a lot of miles on it.
If it's not the thermostat then can coolant leak from the cross over tube. And is the cross over removable without taking off the intake. There appears to be a bolt coming up from underneath on the passenger side.
Also, does coolant flow through this plastic intake. If it does, then the leak could be some where else, if not, then it's probably the thermostat.
I replaced water pump and thermostat...thermostat 2 times.
This is the thing : No coolant will come out the water outlet pipe.... I sit there for way too long and nothing flows out the outlet. remove the thermostat or an inlet hose and coolant flows out.
I overheated pretty bad... I drove maybe 10-15 minutes unaware. I suspected blown head gasket but no missing coolant and nothing in the oil. I removed the water outlet pipe and thermostat and just poured coolant in to see if any reached behind the thermostat. It did.
I even started the engine with it removed and coolant flowed out. now it didn't pour out...as in filling the entire diameter and squirting out... HOW MUCH pressure or flow should be normal there.
I am really stuck. I don't think air is an issue because I don't have a radiator cap. I am thinking blown head gasket restricting flow? New water pump is not up to par ?
Why the hell won't the thermostat open at all!!!!??? removed I get some flow!!! Its a get a jiggle pin. I am about to take into to be diagnosed but I cant believe this problem has turned into this. Can they test head gasket? I am preparing myself to do the head gasket and the rest.
I have a possible oil leak as the title said and it's a 5.4 triton. I believe I'm seeing oil under the frame on the passenger side. Where the leak is coming from and I know it's not a severe leak it's still concerning and what it could be. 2000 F150 Lariat 5.4 ....
View 4 RepliesMy DD just developed a head gasket leak. I've been noticing a coolant smell for a few days and today saw lots of white smoke from the tail pipe. I figured this is where my coolant was going and sure enough there is coolant coming from the driver's side head. I've ordered the gaskets and new bolts, but need the install.
I think mostly what I will need is the intake and head bolt torque and sequence. I will need to take a few days off work to get it done. Truck is a 2002 F150 with a 5.4L engine.
Small oil leak looks like coming down by drivers side up pipe. I don't think it's the turbo o rings. Better not be. But could be I guess. Anyways. It runs down somewhere by the up pipe down onto transmission. I'm not loosing tremendous oil or anything.
View 14 RepliesI have a 2003 Ford f150 5.4. Heater blows hot, then cold, then hot then cold. When it start blowing cold it pukes out the degas bottle. I have burped it, did the combustion test to make sure not a blown head gasket, the oil clean, there is moisture coming out tail pipe but it has no coolant in it. flushed heater core, pulled water pump off and checked it, its good. Changed thermostat 2 times, put front on ramps to get any air out. I am at a total loss now.
View 8 RepliesI just finished installing a new turbo (shaft play and lots of oil in the compressor side), RR up-pipes, and T500 (250k and once had a very long crank to get the ICP up to start).
Anyway, except for another exhaust leak at the pass side up-pipe to manifold, it seemed to run okay but with lots of white smoke. I only have about 50 miles after the install, when it suddenly starting surging and made a lot of loud knocking noises. This then went away and came back again rather quickly. I was close to home, so I made back under power. I also received the two codes listed. My IPR is original, but two summers ago I installed the IPR re-seal kit. Everything on the IPR looked good when it came off for the T500.
After reading around, I saw that low fuel pressure / air in fuel can cause problems. I connected a pressure gauge to the pre-filter port on the filter housing, and got 40psi at idle. I then took a diesel shower and blew out the fuel line into the tank. After re-connecting it, the fuel pressure stayed the same but the engines idles much better, but still has blue smoke. It's the original fuel pump (to me anyway) and original fuel line connections.
I have about 3/4 tank, and no place to put it, so I'd need to run it out for the Hutch mod, or least to get in there and inspect. Would eliminating the Ford connections at the pump be worthwhile for now, and is 40psi at idle adequate? Wondering if it's time for a fuel pump?
My 2003 f150 4x4 w/5.4 has 220k miles and only minor issues until a few days ago. I now have a coolant leak at the mating surface (both sides left and right) of the aluminum crossover coolant manifold (holds thermostat on one end). I have most of the bolts out to remove the crossover manifold but there is one bolt on the RH side that comes from the underside. All things equal, main question is... Can that crossover mainfold be removed independently from the intake? My thought is that in order to get to that last single bolt (there may be others I am not aware of yet) that I will need to remove the intake.
View 1 RepliesOn my 2000 Ford Windstar when I step hard on the gas I have a coolant leak from the back side of the motor and had antifreeze coming up onto the windshield when I turned on the heat. I took the van into the shop and they did a pressure test on it and could not find any leaks and after this I didn't notice any leaks or smell of antifreeze. Drove the van 400 miles with no problem but last Friday I had to step on the gas to exit a parking lot and then again I smelled coolant and my van was steaming. I added coolant and drove it and it is fine now. There is no oil in the coolant tank.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2001 F-150 5.4 engine. There is a coolant leak where the coolant leaves the head. Looks like a new gasket is in order. The part that needs to come off crosses over to the driver's side and the thermostat mounts into it. To remove this part and replace the gasket, it appears that most of the top of the engine, throtle body, fuel rails, intake, etc., will have to come off. One of the four bolts holding the part on is installed with the bolt head facing down. The only way I see to get this out is to take everything apart.
View 5 RepliesMy '02 F150 180k X-cab with the 5.4L is leaking coolant when it is shut off. Its just pouring right out.It looks like it's coming from top of the trans and around the firewall area. I had to replace a drain plug already.. the one behind starter ..its not leaking.
View 4 RepliesMy truck is leaking behind the engine. There is not any coolant on top of the engine. It's leaking above the transmission and running down the passage sides. Are there any hoses that could be leaking behind. Sometimes it leaks a lot other times it doesn't leak at all. The shop thinks it's a freeze plug but wouldn't it be leaking more if it was?
View 6 Replies1998 F150 4x4 4.2 ... Small leak spraying out of a steel pipe onto the front of the motor. This isn't my truck so I'm not very familiar with it but looks like there is a pipe that come from the water pump threw a bracket and y's and one end has a hose going to heater core n the other part is where the leak is I think it has a hose connected to it that goes to the intake. Only leaks when thermostat open. I'm going to take it apart tonight n see what I find. Iv looked for a replacement part and found nothing so I am going to try n replace the steel pipe with hose.
View 4 RepliesI have a 1998 Ford f150 4.6 2x4 i have a coolant leak on the upper intake. It comes out on the back left of the intake through a metal pipe. Well where the metal pipe is (pressed in) to the intake. Now i talk to the guy at ford dealership in the parts he said it is called the (heater pipe). He also told me that the part is 21 dollars but I have to press it in and if that does stop the leak he said I would have to buy a new intake. Now here is the problem I can not find any info regarding this heater pipe. I don't know how to remove it properly, why it is leaking. I can't find it in the handbooks that i have read so far.
View 14 RepliesOnly when running heat or defrost, coolant leak looks like it's coming out of the bell housing. I have a supercharger so very difficult to see behind motor, but with inspection camera, heater hose lines look dry. firewall looks dry. No coolant in cab. No steam on windows or smell. Pretty sure not casting/ freeze plugs because absolutely no leaking with heat off. Can run for days with no loss, then turn on heat and within minutes/ seconds coolant puddling in driveway. Is the hose that runs through valley pressurized only when heat is on? I saw a few older threads but as far as I could tell none specified heat on/ heat off conditions. Just started problem after doing some other work, hoses were off radiator and intercooler, replaced radiator. None of those connections are the culprit.

I have a 2003 Expedition with a coolant leak on the front R/H side of the truck. I do not see any coolent lines on that side of the truck and the leak seems to be running off of the A/C compressor. I notice a couple of drops about the size of a dime about once a week in my drive way since x-mass and have NOT had to add any coolant. I was getting ready to do a flush and fill but now have concerns that it may have a bad head or head gasket. The truck has 84000 miles on it and never has been overheated.
View 1 RepliesI have an 01 supercab. 5.4 Triton 135k. I have begun to smell coolant the last couple of days. Have seen nothing leaking and truck doesn't run hot.
Will investigate more this weekend. Where to start looking for this. It has to be leaking somewhere. Windows don't fog and the smell is there all the time. I live in florida so don't use much heat.
Not the heater core. Heat works fine and no smell from the vents.
Just drove home a 2000 Limited from a used car dealer in NH to MA. Half way home, I stopped to gas up and noticed I was losing a small amount of fuel while pumping. It appears to be leaking from the filler pipe just before the tank, but there was too much splatter to tell for sure. No leak when not pumping, but the tank was only half full.
The dealer "guarantees" that the truck will pass MA state inspection. I'm sure a rusted out filler hose would result in a failure. The "guarantee" really means that he will buy the truck back should it fail, which is not really doing me any good b/c I'll have to start looking for a new truck all over again.
I'm unable to find a part # or pic of a filler neck for the Excursion. Is it the same as other Super Duty necks? Is this thing welded to the tank? That sounds like an involved, difficult fix.
2003 7.3 175,000 miles...
Saw a stain in my driveway where you normally see AC drip. Opened hood and saw degas empty.
Looking around like crazy and find wet area. Where the coolant line turns down beside the passenger fender.
Looks wet near bend going toward running board. Didn't get to inspect much but I pulled back a bit of loom to inspect shape of lines and they look great.
What could be going on?
