I have taller tires on the truck. I knew the odometer would be reading incorrectly so I took it to my local ford dealer. They said the truck is to old to calibrate.
The truck has a manual shift five speed transmission. To fix the problem I thought about swapping the rear end gears.
Can you swap the output shaft speedo gear in the transmission tail shaft? How to calibrate? 1998 F150 ....
Ok so I was going to just swap the whole rear end from drum to disk but it looked to be too much difficult;t. So the rear I have has 278,000 miles in it and its starting to make noise we were thinking about swapping the gear from the disk to the drum because the disk rear has 140,000 miles on it. Both have a limited slip. And 3.55 gears but i was thinking about getting 3.73.... So my question is can I swap in 3.73 gears into a rear end with the limited slip from one with 3.55 gears? Or do I need to buy a different limited slip?

This is the first time it has happened to me, what could cause this or have a problem similar to this and know how to fix it?
I have a 1998 f150 4x4 4.6 triton V8 regular cab, I would like to ditch the rear drum brakes in favor of disk brakes. is this an easy bolt on project? I do know that 2003 f150's had rear disk brakes and was wondering if i bought those parts if the procedure would be fairly easy. I know i would have to take a check valve out of the master cylinder to gain pressure to the rear.
View 8 RepliesOk, I have a 98 F150 XLT, standard cab, 8 ft. bed, 2WD with limited slip - if any of that makes a difference.
The rear axle vent tube is literally blowing oil out the top, where it's loosely connected to the bed. It does this every few weeks. I pulled the hose and ran a rifle cleaning rod down it to make sure it wasn't plugged ... it wasn't.
It seems like it's building up pressure somewhere, then blowing all at once, but why?
I parked my truck yesterday and know the odometer display was working. Started truck up this morning and no display. My brake light (idiot light in dash) was slightly illuminated as well. The truck ran fine and when I shut it off and started it back up again, the odometer was still out but the brake light was off. Any thoughts? I saw a you tube video showing a cold solder joint on the back of the dash motherboard. I hate to pull that all apart if there could be something else that is simple.

View 7 Replies200 F150 5.4L Triton, 164K rounds. My odometer has been going on and off intermittently since I bought the truck 4 months ago, no big deal. This morning, though, I started the truck to go to work and my oil pressure gauge was at zero. There wasn't any noise coming from the motor aside from the very slight bottom end knock it had when I bought it, so I figured it's the sending unit. I shut the truck off and started it back up a few times to be sure, and the oil pressure sending unit started working. But THEN my 4X4 engaged. The dial on the dash was in the 2WD position, but the 4X4 was definitely engaged. It wouldn't engage when I first bought the truck without swapping the vacuum hoses under the hood, and now it's doing it on its' own.
View 1 RepliesI just picked up an 01 F150 2wd for my daughter. I've noticed that the light up odometer has no illumination when the headlights are off, and when I turn the headlights on (to illuminate the gauges) I get just the faintest bit of light of the numbers of the odometer. It's so dim that unless it's nearly dark outside you can barely even tell it's lit up. The dimmer dial for the gauges is turned all they way up to max before the dome light comes on.
The LCD display for the odometer wouldn't use a traditional filament style bulb for light, so I'm at a loss right now.
I just noticed that the odometer and trip meter have stopped working. What is involved in the repair?
View 6 RepliesThe odometer light turns on and off (mostly off) and seems to be getting worse. The repair shop I go to said its a dealer item and they usually send them out to a specialized shop, the dealer said replace instrument cluster. I may not be the best but I would like to try a few things before I shell out the money. I read that it may simply be the connections at the Instrument cluster plugin which might just need cleaning, read another fix which involved Pencel soldering, Cold Solders on the instrument clusters circuit board.

View 2 RepliesI reprogrammed my computer, to get rid of a bad tune with the Ford Program. After reprogramming, and entering in my tire size/gear size my speedometer and odometer no longer work. Also my overdrive light is flashing. Does this truck have a PSOM and could that be bad? What else could cause the problem, it definitely happened when it was flashed. Whats the cheapest way to fix it?

Things that might affect this problem; Transmission skids loudly when going in and out of 4-OD. It could be the Torque converter clutch?

I bought this truck literally two days ago. It seemed a little hard to shift, but no other problems. The truck had been sitting a short while, the guy said he took it on local trips, but nothing more. I noticed the oil and coolant levels were crazy low, so maybe it had been sitting longer or the guy was neglectful, I'm not sure...
I was driving it home and it seems like what can be described as: the gear ratio went completely out.
For example, 4th gear acted like 1st gear, 5th gear like somewhere between 1st and 2nd gear, so when I'm at 20mph, in 5th gear, the rpms are really high like im going 20mph in first gear (not 5th).
Today none of the gears engage at all... I dropped off a trailer at uhaul, and I got stuck there! (The truck is still there, I walked 4 miles home)
The shifter works fine, all gears sound like neutral (including reverse) when accelerator is pressed. Car won't move at all, nothing is engaging.
Underneath the car, there is a leak from the transmission assembly, maybe around the fill plug? It's only a small puddle. Maybe fluid, shift forks, bushes? or all?
The trany is less than a year old rebuilt by a local shop.
Starting two days ago when i put the shifer in anything but reverse and 2nd it acts like it is in nurtral. 2nd and reverse are strong and do not slip. do you think its in the linkage? Or is my tranny dead?

The truck is a 2002 f150 4x4 5.4l... I was driving down the free way last night in 2wd doing about 90kpm when there was a loud bang like a ran over something. Speedo went to zero and abs light came on. Pulled over and shut it down. Crawled underneath to check so damage and couldn't see anything. Stared it back up put it in drive and it just revs. No forward gears or reverse. Fluid level is good, bright pink. Dropped the transmission pan, pan is clean and magnet has next to nothing on it.
