'98 XLT 4.0 SOHC.
First of all overdrive started to play up, the engine would flare as it went into OD and often would have several goes at it until it engaged OD. Finally it wouldn't go into OD.
Still driving it around for awhile then it went into limp home mode - stuck in 3rd gear. What it might be?
A friend of mine at work has a 93 4wd explorer. A4ld transmission. Reverse quit working, and no matter what gear you put it in, reverse, neutral, or park, it will stay in drive. Park holds itself, but if you give it gas, it tries to pull. He says when it's in reverse, it's almost like it's stuck in reverse and forward, it wants to rock. He pulled the pan, no metal shavings, and pulled the valve body. He said the screws holding the valve body were finger tight. The gasket underneath had a small tear in it, he doesn't know if he did this pulling it out or not. He replaced those gaskets and retorqued the valve body. When he put it in reverse and topped off fluid, reverse worked. He put it in drive and it worked, but when he put it back in reverse, it stayed in drive and is staying in drive in all gear selections again. He bought this explorer new, and the transmission had never been into before.
View 3 RepliesI was pulling into my driveway. I put the car in park, but when i went to get out of the car, it started to roll forward. When I finally got it stopped, I tried to shift it, and it wouldn't shift to any spot. Then it became stuck in between Park and Reverse. I can't move the gear shift.
View 1 RepliesLast night while driving, my transmission made a pretty severe clunk, but then appeared to act normal. However, a check engine light came on so I pulled over immediately as I was literally at the entrance to a gas station.
I looked under the vehicle, under the hood, saw nothing leaking, nothing obviously broken etc. So got back in and started the engine, went to shift into reverse and the transmission clunks, same going from N into D.
I limped it home, but while driving noticed that it was not shifting but stuck in one gear.
This morning I scanned for codes and the only one showing is P0770 Shift Solenoid. I searched this forum though and get 0 results on that code, searching Google is also surprisingly vague. I believe (could be wrong though) that I have the 6R60 Transmission, it is a 2008 Explorer with the 4.6L V8.
Where to check first? When I get time I am going to check the fluid level, but could not last night as there is no dipstick!
I have an extracted T18 transmission and it appears to be stuck in gear, preventing the Shift Control Housing (top part of trans.) from being removed. Would pulling the shifter remove that top plate? As it is I can get that plate lifted about an inch while I notice the in/output shafts turn, which leaves me to believe it's stuck in gear.
View 2 RepliesI had been waiting to fix my explorer for a long time. The "previous owner" I will call him knowingly sold me a vehicle with a bad tranny without disclosing it... long story. To get to the important part, it had the common 2/3 shift flare. I dropped the pan, filter, and valve body, making sure to use a template and put the bolts where they go. Then i took the valve body to the work bench and replaced the gasket, which was surprisingly not blown. After more looking around, I realized the previous owner had already had the fix done. I tightened the EPC 1/4 turn and reassembled the tranny. When i started it, it was stuck in first gear. PRN21 all went forward (park just revved a bit due to the park lockout.)
I tore it back apart and found that the plunger on the side of the valve body was stuck in the 1st gear position. I pushed it back out and cleaned it up so it moved freely. Then I reassembled the tranny using new fluid again.
After that the tranny was stuck in neutral. I dropped the pan again today, and tightened the valve body bolts and made sure my solenoids are tight. Filled it back up slowly with the engine running. It shifted into gear for a second (tried to go forward while it was in reverse though). Then it was again stuck in neutral in all the gears again.
Tranny started acting funny recently...shifting hard into reverse at first, then last night it was like it was stuck in high gear or slipping on the way home. Limped it home and took the following codes:
P0743 TORQUE CONVERTER CIRCUIT ELECTRICAL
P0750 SHIFT SOLENOID A MALFUNCTION
P0755 SHIFT SOLENOID B MALFUNCTION
P0760 SHIFT SOLENOID C MALFUNCTION
P0765 SHIFT SOLENOID D MALFUNCTION
P0962 PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID A CONTROL CIRCUIT LOW
P0966 PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID B CONTROL CIRCUIT LOW
P0970 PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID C CONTROL CIRCTUT LOW
My transmission is manual, front wheel drive, 4 cylinder motor, plunger has come disconnected from shifting forks, car is stuck in 3rd or 4th gear. Would it be easier to change transmission or is replacing the plunger mechanism a viable option?
View 3 RepliesMy manual transmission got stuck in 4th because of a melted oil trough sticking between the gears. I got all the plastic out, and the dog clutches/collars are "free." But, I don't know how to put the gears back into neutral. When it's reassembled, the stick doesn't work to change the gears. How can I get the gearbox back into neutral?
View 19 RepliesI have just put in another transmission and the truck will not shift out of first gear, it will go in reverse and first and reverse. The guy who had it before me had the same problem when he put in a transmission with only about 40-60,000 miles he assumed it was a bad transmission. And that's how I ended up with the truck. We have so far installed yet another transmission and it is doing the same not shifting out of first that it did for him. There is no cel or blinking overdrive lights, checked fluid levels, checked selinoids, gonna purchase a used computer for diagnostics, I am stumped with limited knowledge. The dealership said the transmission should be the e40d I'm reading it should have the 4r100 is that correct? The truck is the 5.4L v8 with 74,000 original miles. Truck sounds amazing. I really want to fix it.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2004 Explorer 4.0 4x4 with 130,000 miles. The vehicle will not move while in 2 WD or in 4H. No engagement at all. However it will engage in 4L (reverse and drive). It also makes no sound from transfer case when I try to shift from auto 4x4 to 4H. 4L engages and is a bitch to get out of 4L once it's engaged. Changed tranny fluid and filter with no change. Really need this truck fixed, and by me if at all possible.
View 3 RepliesOur 2002 Explorer E.B., V6 4wd 153,000 miles, when cold only in winter months the transmission is slow to go into gear, forward or reverse, takes 10 or 15 seconds to catch into gear. If you warm the car up for 5 minutes or so it is ok no problem. In warm weather it does not do this. Transmission shifts normally and runs great other than this. I changed tranny fluid and filter with Mercon V about 12 months ago. Could it be the solenoid pack or something else.
View 3 RepliesI posted earlier this month about my 1996 Ford F150 4x4 manual tranny truck. It had gotten stuck in fourth gear, and I, along with others, assumed it was the shift forks. I cracked open the top of the transmission yesterday, and what do I see? Melted plastic staring back at me. What's going on here? There was melted plastic jammed between fourth gear and the inner wall.
Is this a case of the surgeon leaving his instruments inside the patient? Could a mechanic have dropped his tuna sandwich wrapper in the transmission at some time?
I have a 2011 F150 EB SCREW 4x4. Built in september 2011. The issue seems to have started recently as follows:
1st incident- driving normal, came to stop, accelerate from stop (normally) and the truck was stuck in first gear. Pulled over, shut it off, waited, restarted and seemd ok.
2nd incident (today)- driving normal at around 40mph in 6th gear and all of a sudden the transmission violently jumped to 1st gear for no reason! Then slowly geared back up to 6th again.
Also, I have sometimes noticed that soon after startup, but adequately warmed up, the truck will seem to keep pulling forward at a stop light with the brakes on hard...rpm is at normal idle but it seems like the torque converter will not "let go".
I'm going to be calling the dealer but need feedback, especially regarding any TSB's, SSM's etc for this?
Transmission was not shifting out of second gear set a code stuck solenoid cleared code seems to be working now....
View 4 RepliesI have a 99 F150 4x4 with the 4.6 Motor approx 150000miles. Transmission went out so I decided to try and replace it...
New/rebuilt tranny went in with no problem but something is not right. It will drive but seems like it is stuck in high gear and bogs the motor down. It is giving me error codes P1747, P0750, P0755, P0743, P0102. All the wiring harness is in good shape with no burns or other noticeable problems. Somehow the transmission isn't reading right?
When I bought this rebuilt transmission I was told it was set up for 2wd but he would convert it for 4wd. The only difference i noticed with the new tranny is the shaft coming out of the tranny, where the safety neutral switch is, has a diamond shape instead of the oval shape that connects the shifter cable. No big deal i think, just had to buy a new link for the shifter cable with the diamond.
Also on the passenger side of the tranny there is a nine pin plug. My wire harness from the truck has one pin hole that is opposite of the tranny. Not sure why. Do I need a new harness or wrong tranny?

No transmission issues ever. Immediately after doing an oil change myself for first time, get some transmission dropouts, slipping out of gear at stop lights, waiting way too long to go into 2nd, etc.
Then, started getting OD off light, and service engine. Error codes show something about wrong setting for 2nd, 5th, solenoid error... a bunch of 'em.
Anyway, guy at parts store says I must have knocked a wire loose causing misreads between cpu and transmission. It's a real pain getting under there since I'm using jack stands, so exactly what I should be looking for or at least the exact name of a connector or something so I can look it up.
I have a problem with my transmission I believe. Its 2004 passat 4-cyl turbo. Not sure whats wrong. When i start the car the entire display (P-R-N-D) is lit up like they are all in gear. It drives but seems to be stuck in 3rd gear I would guess.
View 2 Replies04' Ford Explorer - 4.6l Automatic 4x4 - 138,000 miles... While driving today my transmission hesitated a long time between 2-3 gear and RPM went higher than normal. After coming to a stop a taking off again, long hesitation, slams into 3rd gear, check transmission warning came on and OD light on dash was blinking. I drive it home and pull the code: P0745. I drop the pan and find a piece of metal 1/4 wide x 1/2 long. Does this mean a complete trans rebuild?
View 5 Repliesmaking a right turn and accelerating up a slight incline trans hangs in 2nd gear to 4000 rpm until I hit the + paddle. Dealer says this is normal for the DSG. I'm not buying it! Occasionally it is reluctant to upshift from 2nd on a straight way during normal acceleration. 2014 sel v6 dsg.
View 6 RepliesSo couple of days ago, I went shopping. no issues. after shopping i fired it up, no issues, put it reverse, car was shaking, put the car in neutral. No issues, put the car in drive car is shaking again. i started to drive no shaking, however the car felt like it had no power, I only felt shaking during switching from R TO N TO D. So I change to manual mode and see the gear was 3rd. i was not able to change gears manually, neither did the tranny switched them for me. I drove home about a 3 miles. shut the car off, restart it...gears and car drives normal. Took to dealership, they checked it...and of course no issues. Ihave 44k miles and 50k warranty expires next week, nice, huh? got another year of powetrain warranty left.
